I've been wanting a review channel that focuses on headphones for gaming for a long time. Most reviewers mention gaming in passing and they're usually referring to fps games. Absolutely loving the channel and how it's presented.
I bought it an I love it .Dont expect strong bass without a headphone amplifier and dont expect it on bad recordings as well . Great headphone, great transparency , I really love them .
Maybe I've just never used quality headphones but I LOVE my DT990 Pros. They are far and away the best headphones ive ever used for gaming, media playback, all of it. Great review

The 990s have been used for a long time in and out the studio, ever since like the 80s, pretty sure some of your favourite songs have been mixed on these headphones, Calling them studio legends is a pretty decent term.
It's been a long time since I heard the 7XX. I honestly was not a huge fan. It had a super cheap build and no bass to speak of at all. It probably has a larger head stage but I would trust the 990 more for imaging and positional acuity. Keep in mind though that some will be bothered by the treble spike and may need EQ.
@@gamingaudioguide9292 so far the dt 990 sounds really good compared to k7xx. The 990 has more clarity while the k7xx sounds a bit muddy. The treble is definitely harsher but it doesn't bother me. I am loving it. The clamping force is a bit too much and is making my ears hurt. I would probably have to loosen it up by putting it on a book as many suggested on reddit.
I just purchased a DT-990 but am thinking about exchanging/upgrading for the DT-1990. Do you feel like the DT-1990 (plus passive filter) is worth upgrading to?
@@sofakng163 I have read the same thing. I have tried the Dekoni Elite Velour designed for another headphone and the material just wasn't for me. Combine my prior experience to just not caring for how the look with those pads, I prefer a passive filter. However if you like the material, it appears to be a very easy fix for the treble!
Have you tried the akg Q701? I'm curious of its soundstage is compared to that. I used to game with it and feel spoiled after having such a huge soundstage. Only other headphone I've read that had a larger soundstage is the 800S. Oh yeah, I guess letting you know that I prefer a flatter frequency helps. Im not a fan of huge bass unless Im listening to just music.
not the Q701, but I have tried the K7XX. I don't have them on hand any longer. from memory I would say the 7XX had slightly larger stage but I trust the imaging and positional acuity of the 990 more.

I wouldn't mind getting another q701 but they're twice the price I've paid for mine. Maybe I'll give these a shot. Do you think the 600 version would still have that peak?
@@hawaiian-cerveza be wary of the treble spike. I'm afraid it will bother a lot of folks. honestly, I think the 600 ohm version has as high a peak but pushed down a bit. I haven't tried it since something like 2012 - but it hurt my ears something fierce. of course, my ears were younger and more sensitive as well.

@@hawaiian-cerveza if you are sensitive to that 9k region - you bet. you can see on the charts - it's a fierce spike. I'm more sensitive around 6k. HD700 caused me to not be able to wear headphones for two weeks.
I have been waiting for this review for some time, and I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the graphics of this phone. After seeing several of your reviews, I am tempted to pick up the DT880 600ohms, because from what I understand, this is where I will find the best detail for the price of 200. Do you believe that with the APO equalizer it would be possible to have the DT880 600ohms with a low volume similar to Tygr? Very grateful for another great review friend!
first, thank you for the kind words and taking the time to share your thoughts. the 990 will disappoint anyone looking for great sub bass extension or who is treble sensitive around 9k. The 880 600 ohm is a great headphone, I enjoy it. You could use Equalizer APO to boost the bass a bit and pull down the first part of the mid range a bit as well to replicate the bass bump of the Tygr 300R. You can save different EQ profiles as well. One for gaming and one for critical listening. It's a great tool once you learn your way around it.
Hey sir! I've been enjoying your videos a lot recently, and was hoping for some advice from someone who's tried a bunch of audio hardware: I picked up a Soundblaster AE-9 (comes with it's own external AMP that connects via RCA + a mini HDMI control module for certain settings), and paired it with some nice HD 800 S headphones after the DT 1990 Pros clamped way too hard. The HD800S however gives me a weird sensation in my left ear, almost as if there's a deafening, or as if a ghost is touching my eardrum. Hard to explain. I only experience it with these headphones, and get relief when I take them off. Have you experienced anything like this? Could it be the AMP? In my setup, would you recommend a different amp with this headphone?
First, thank you for the kind words and support. The AE-9 is not something I have tested, so I am limited to measurements I can find online and manufacturer specs. At first blush, it appears to be a good amplifier with low output impedance and no glaring flaws. Have you tried the HD800S with any other amplifiers at all? Even motherboard audio? This sounds like either you have a sensitivity to something in the FR of the HD800S that you can likely EQ out (I can try to help) or it is clamping behind and below your ear too tightly.
@@gamingaudioguide9292 I haven't tried a different amp, but I have an Asgard 3 on the way to rule it out. Don't have a way to convert the 800s connection down to fit mb or card directly at the moment or I'd give that a go. They're really comfortable so I can't imagine a clamping issue causing internal discomfort like that. Any idea what frequency could be causing this?
@@digitalzomb Do you have someting like Equalizer APO? the HD800S has two peaks - the most likely culprit is around 7.5k. Knock that down 6db with a Q factor of 2 and see if it changes the sensation. If not, try the same around 4.5k. Peak filters obviously.

keep in mind that is per milliwatt. my pixel 2XL can push them over 100db. I consider that pretty easy to drive for about any headphone amp or interface. some phones or tablets might not get as loud as someone wants, but tried to keep context to amps and interfaces.
hi, I'm a bit confused between the dt 770 80 ohms and dt 990 250 ohm. My purpose is Mainly for listening to electronic music/ pop, RnB, hip-hop etc and I'm also an fps gamer but my main reason for wanting to buy this headphone is for a better listening experience with some gaming on the side. Do you think for my specific purpose, the dt770 80 ohm is better ( I've heard that this one offers one of the best bass in the series and I do kinda like a good amount of bass) or is the 990 better because of that sound stage experience?
Just got the 880pro Black on ebay for $108. Waiting for them to arrive. Worried about what I will think of them. I currently have the 770 80 ohm and was thinking of getting the 6xx, but no one was bidding on the blacks for some reason.
clamping force goes down in time and you can also bend them to loosen them. they are even better with half leather earpads or full leather earpads. pads do change them alot
I currently have a AKG K612 pro with a fiiO E10k dac/amp (I believe it's a dac amp), I'm leaning towards an AKG k712 pro for my evolution because it supposidly keeps the k612 feel but only makes it better, as well as a schiit stack (magnus, modi?). What do you think? Do you have any other recommendations?
I've only used the K7XX in that family, so my experience is a little limited there. I think if you like the physical design, then it makes sense to see what their next tier has to offer. The e10 seems to be a nice little starter unit. A stack from JDS Labs or Schiit would be a nice upgrade with a lot more power at your fingertips.
beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250 ohm - LIMITED EDITION (Black, Straight Cable) is the one I would get because I don't like coil cables and I think they all matte black looks nicer
DIY-audio-heaven now changed the dt990 passive filter to lower the 11khz by 7db. I’m Wondering why they did that. I thought the peak was more in the 8-9khz region.
I actually own a Srh1540 with Motu M4, What headphone can you recommend that's better for gaming without sacrifice (or improving) the comfort, I don't care if I need to buy aftermarket pads or something similar
of course you can. I really like Equalizer APO. It is free and very powerful with tons of utility. not super user friendly though, takes some tweaking to get used to it.
Im torn between the DT 880 Premium and the DT 990 Premium 600 ohms. Im scared of the treble sound and Im very competetive in games. But I also enjoy bassy edm songs and rap, so I dont know which of those two I should go for. Currently using my ATH-AD500X for 4 years now.
990 premium has a higher treble spike than the pro. only buy if you have a way to EQ it out if it bothers you. 880 is safer, analytical. It is boring to a lot of people though.
600 ohm is tough on a lot of motherboards. the 1220 chip actually does better with high impedance than really low impedance. I think it could get you by until you upgrade. I recommend moving to something like JDS Labs or similar though.
Given the choice between the DT 990 pro 250 ohm, and the DT 880 Premium 250 ohm for casual gaming and listening to music/watching movies, which would you choose? Also, for me the 880 premiums are £30 ($41) more than the 990 pros, would you say (if they're better) that they're worth the extra money?
The peak that bothers most people in the 990 is around 8/9k. Its an enormous peak. Pad break in brings the driver closer to your ear and typically calms some treble reflection. Many people need to tame that peak with a 6-9db reduction. Pad break in won't calm it that much. The peak will only change by 2-3db. That may indeed be enough for your ears, just keep in mind, that is not a blanket solution for all.

Been looking around on reddit and such, and people have been saying the Fulla 3 wouldn't make the DT990's as clear sounding as, let's say, a Schiit Stack or JDS Atom amp/dac. Worries me and makes me think I need to get one of those.
@@UrAJok3r I think those comments are unsubstantiated. The Fulla is listed at putting out more than 40mw into 250 ohms. The 990 Pro 250 ohm gets to 96db at 1mw. If their listed specs are accurate, there should be more than enough power on tap.

The 880 600 ohm is a great headphone, I enjoy it. You could use Equalizer APO to boost the bass a bit and pull down the first part of the mid range a bit as well to replicate the bass bump of the Tygr 300R. i am about to but the dt 990 pro black and i was wondering, i am gonna use it for mixing and mastering and it causes fatigue if you use it a lot?

I have always wanted to try the 1540, I rather enjoy the 1840, which is fantastic for gaming. Do you want to stick with closed? The M4 is also great.

Been looking around on reddit and such, and people have been saying the Fulla 3 wouldn't make the DT990's as clear sounding as, let's say, a Schiit Stack or JDS Atom amp/dac. Worries me and makes me think I need to get one of those.
@@UrAJok3r I think those comments are unsubstantiated. The Fulla is listed at putting out more than 40mw into 250 ohms. The 990 Pro 250 ohm gets to 96db at 1mw. If their listed specs are accurate, there should be more than enough power on tap.

yes, you want an amplifier for the 250ohm version. Some motherboards come with decent headphone amps in them now.
