Trying McDonald's in CHINA! Beijing Menu Review!

  • There is no more ubiquitous chain in the entire world than McDonald's. Well, maybe except Starbucks! But Starbucks actually has not caught on in some countries, particularly those with a strong coffee culture. McDonald's, on the other hand, has been a hit in almost every country that it has locations in, and China is no exception!
Unlike Starbucks, where the menu is not as different than in America, McDonald's in China is localized and tailored to local tastes. There are a few Asian menu items thrown into the mix, such as a fried chicken and bamboo wrap with mushu sauce that resembles a Chinese street food, but also they have many western food items that seem to be catered to the tastes that Chinese people want in Western foods. These include dark meat roast chicken leg sandwiches, angus beef burgers, fried chicken, and more!
I think many vloggers tend to exaggerate how great McDonald's and 7 Eleven are abroad. While I do agree that their quality is probably better than in the states, at the end of the day they are still just fast food restaurants and you shouldn't expect too much. We will be offering an honest review and trying the China McDonald's menu and see if Chinese McDonald's indeed is as good as the vloggers say!

When China first opened up for tourism, it was bare bones. My friend went. Her tour group had to stay in the officers barracks. Every place they ate, was eight course meals. She loved it . Towards the end, she said all she wanted was a hamburger.

I wish BK, McD's, KFC, etc. would test their foreign market items more often here in the States. RUclips has shown a great many Americans that even though they started here, fast food mega corps are just phoning it in domestically and innovating and making quality food everywhere else.

I don't even eat McDonalds all that often here in the states but I always went at least once or twice per Beijing visit.

I am a sucker for an international McDonalds review. I appreciate your honesty, and I’m happy you shared it with us. I was at a McD’s in Hong Kong and I was wishing they had more Chinese exclusives. It was unfortunately very similar to the US menu. Overall, I enjoyed it though. Best unique item they had was a Hello Kitty themed Ube pie.

I visited Beijing a number of years ago. I actually went there twice. It is one of my favorite cities.
Near my hotel was a McDonald’s where I would walk past each day. It seemed ice cream was very popular there. Always a number of people waiting at a counter where you order the soft serve

I'd think a "suburban" part of Beijing isn't really that unusual. I mean - there are parts of NYC that feel like suburbs. But then Beijing is huge, where they just kept on annexing more and more land into a prefecture level city where it gets to the point where it seems they just want to make a really large city just to claim it's big. But Beijing itself is divided into districts and counties. But as a point of comparison, Beijing is over 6000 square miles, while NYC is about 300 square miles.

Jacques Pepin said that about a weekend out with his daughter in NYC - just the two of them. And he was used to taking her to high-end restaurants, but after a while she broke down and asked to go to Burger King. To which he said he didn't have to analyze the choice, but just enjoy what you have.

I enjoyed your review as usual. Yes, if you are going to grill the chicken, the white meat is at great risk of becoming tough on the outside and dry on the inside, whereas a thigh is a much better bet. I wanted to thank you for looking into the issue I had with the characters for King's Joy. 京都is Japanese for Kyoto, and similar to Beijing, just the character 京, pronounced Kyo passes for the complete name (Japanese love to contract everything) or the alternative pronunciation serves, Miyako, which means capital. I never knew 戸was read as Ying in Chinese. The computer gave you a lot of references for 北but in Japanese this is pretty unambiguously North, although so many characters can be pronounced the same creating a lot of puns, a basis of Japanese humor, and they are also--I think this is true in China as well--often used simply as their phonetic sound, like米which means rice but can be pronounced as mei in both Chinese and Japanese and is used to mean 'American'. But I still don't see any character that can remotely be associated with King (capital maybe) or joy, although kita which means north might possibly phonetically represent 'ki' which is one reading of 'joy' so if a similar phonetic ambiguity exists between north and joy in Chinese? I'm sorry to be so pedantic and boring, but I also saw you confronted with the packaging of the burger. In Japan you literally can't open any little package or use any everyday item if you can't read the tiny instructions printed on the package; there is no standard way of cooking instant noodles, or even opening the packaging. I have an American wife who loves Japan and doesn't care, buys things without knowing what they are or how to use them. She is fluent in spoken Japanese--that does not mean she is either correct or could ever pass for Japanese on the phone--but she can keep most conversations going. But she can't read, and that handicaps her. I had to instruct her how to open a rice ball from 7-11, but I never knew either until I read the wrapper.

No Dessert? I was curious to see what type of desserts Beijing, China McD's has to offer. I was in Thailand a couple of months ago, and the McD's there had those Chinese style fried donuts... the one's that look like X's? It came with a side of dipping sauce of your choice... strawberry sauce, chocolate sauce, but I chose the Sweetened Condensed Milk... it was sooooo good! Oh, and their apple pies are still fried! Had to get one of those too!

The best McDonalds I have been to ever was in downtown Milan across from the duomo (big cathedral). It was very busy/popular and the food was as good as McDonalds gets. People kept telling me to try McDonalds in Germany. I tried the McDonalds in Munich that is the busiest McDonalds in Europe and it was as mediocre as you would find in the US. I also tred a McDonalds on the autobahn between Berlin and Nuremberg. The people were very nice but the foods was mediocre. So in my book, Milan is the one to beat.

Probably the most unusual thing ive ever had at one of their locations but it was pretty good.

Your video is flickering due to the power supply frequency difference. It affects street lights, indoor ligting, and televisions, etc. In Europe/Asia (PAL), the frequency is 50 Hz, and videos typically run at 25 fps. In the USA (NTSC), the frequency is 60 Hz, and videos run at 29.97 fps. Adjust your settings accordingly. Hope this helps.

I got a fish sandwich in Zhuhai and the sauce was legit. I was disappointed by the small drink size.

I like the plastic lids with the opening. Damn paper straws suck. We have places here that use the new style of lid now.

I've seen a few Costco locations do that with the little sippy flap. Initially started with cities that banned plastic straws, which then got complaints about paper straws (which start to fall apart when wet). Still - I've occasionally seen it where they have the little flaps but then offer straws. Since there's no traditional straw opening, the straw goes in the flap but that leaves a big hole that can leak if it's in a car cup holder.

China gets points for giving up straws. I don't think you're right about sprite and soda. In other countries they use real sugar not dumping high fructose corn syrup in it, like in the US. Don't assume its the same. Yeah I think you do need Tina to keep you in check LOL

Hey UA - I’ve actually eaten there in Beijing. It didn’t taste the same, but it was the closest thing to eating American food.

Outside of fast food, there really aren't that many American restaurant chains in China other than maybe Pizza hut.
The only one I can think of is TGI Fridays, which has two locations in Beijing. I didn't see one on a trip to Beijing, but I do remember one at our hotel in Wuxi on New Year's Eve. It was weird too, where I saw a server wearing this big foam cowboy-style hat with a stars and stripes motif.
I heard there are a few Chili's in China, but not in Beijing yet.

Just by the look of it, the grilled chicken sandwich looks delicious. Too bad you can't read Chinese. I am able to read Thai but not write it. Forgot how to do so a long time ago.

As a chinese american, i would not be going to china. Plus the food there is questionable with lack of regulation.
