    Quick fact check: the larger pixels don't have less noise just because they're larger. Smaller pixels technically have more noise but it's less visible because the pixels are smaller. HOWEVER if you are shooting 4k video and only using a small number of the pixels on your high resolution sensor, that is no longer true. So an 8 mp camera has the best low light for 4k video, if we're not considering downsampling. Also, the larger pixels make it easier to put electronics in the sensor, and this is a huge thing for the A7SIII and ZV-E1 because that sensor has a dual native ISO, which makes very high ISOs less noisy by a large amount. So yes, the A7SIII has the best low light performance in video, but not just because it is low resolution. It's because of the dual native ISO and because it actually uses most of the sensor area.

    • @ArthurR

  • @josephdu1952
    @josephdu1952 Год назад +15

    One minor thing... the difference for a 12 megapixel and a 33 megapixel sensor of the same size in low light is going to be negligible (given they are using the same technology)
    It is true that the larger pixels will individually pick up more light than the smaller pixels, but, the smaller pixels will also contribute less noise compared to a single larger pixel (give the noise to signal ratio is the same for the sensors, which should be very close if they are from the same generation).
    If we pixel-peep and zoom in where the smaller pixels are shown at the same size on the screen as the larger pixels, the image with the higher resolution sensor is going to look noisier just like how a smaller sensor tend to have more noise than larger ones. But when looking at the image as a whole, the smaller pixels will also take up less space, contributing less actual noise to the overall image.
    But yea... there is certainly truth behind a single larger pixels absorbing more light than a single smaller pixel, though it may not actually lead to better low light performance in the end image.
    As always though, thanks for the thoughtful video, looking forward to your review 👍... and hope that $1,000 dream camera will exist one day... hopefully

      Actually your wrong. ruclips.net/video/VSFqCnzIe9M/видео.html
      Higher megapixel cameras do better in low light.

    • @josephdu1952
      @josephdu1952 Год назад

      @@cjenkins79 I think you missed the point in the video you sent.
      Higher megapixel have better image quality in those examples because they have higher resolution. The point of the video is to show low megapixel doesn't "gather more light" as the overall sensor size is the same
      Of course the higher resolution sensor looks better in those comparisons when cropped in, just like how it would in any situations, normal or low light.
      No one is ever going to argue that higher resolution is gonna have more detail cropped in. But that is not the topic here.
      Rather than saying "Higher megapixel cameras do better in low light", it's more accurate to say "Higher megapixel cameras are better", but again, that have nothing to do with light gathering, but with pixel density.
      But since we are specifically referring to light gathering in low light, just as the rain bucket analogy from that video you sent, there is no difference.

    Sony should release a true small, lightweight and affordable wide prime lens! With that kind of 30% crop of dynamic mode it should be 14 or 15mm 2.0 or 2.8. I know there is a G Master 14mm 1.8 but it is too bigz heavy and expensive. Take a look at the Sony APSC 11mm and made it similar for fullframe. And maybe in the future that dunamic mode crop could be less intrusive.

    Thank you for a view from interesting perspective.
    I own A7III and a6600 with a bunch of lenses and accessories, and always look carefully when a new body is announced. But still never felt the urge to invest in upgrading the body yet.
    Even though I feel like shifting more from a photography towards videography, and all of the restrictions of my camera bodies bug me: poor image stabilization that's not enough for handheld video, 8-bit with worse color science, terrible rolling shutter especially in 4k, 4k30 (and 25) instead of 4k120 (and 100), lack of autofocus features in video - like animal autofocus, and so on.
    But still, I feel like investing in new accessories and glass is more rewarding than hunting for a new body.
    Today GoPro still feels like a better option for doing handheld video stuff like vlogs for me, it's body is lighter and more durable, it even can shoot underwater without special box.
    I think maybe Sony are trying to get GoPro or even smartphone market share with its EV series, but it still feels like they are still haven't figured it out, they're working on it but haven't made their best option yet. Like A7III was when it was new.

    I like that this guy is trying to be balanced. I feel Sony gets all the content creators/ RUclipsrs on board with the hype. I’m more interested in reports that at the top bitrate at 4k60p it can be overheating in 15 mins and won’t cool down quickly. Also the word ‘AI’ is being overused, it’s just tracking people and faces and cropping in camera or adjusting settings to get in a second face. It’s not doing much ‘Ai’ but it’s the new buzzword.
    I’m not saying the camera is bad, it looks very good and I’m considering it myself but I think we need proper user reviews to see it’s issues before jumping in on the hype. I personally only shoot pretty short clips but a lot of it is in hot environments- in places like Florida at Disney, if it’s overheating in 10/15 mins and then I can’t get it cool, it’s no good to anyone. I suspect we may get some very bad reports on overheating on this camera and this may be behind this strange decision not to have 4k 120fps as that would really have highlighted overheating in initial review. Anyway I hope not because I want one but I am holding off as I don’t trust most reviews from people who get Sony pre release products.

      AI is a buzzword, sure, but I think a lot of people don't understand what AI is. AI doesn't need to be something complex at all, it doesn't need to be learning, doesn't need to be using Neural networks either. A simple piece of code that calculates the optimal f-stop to have 2 sets of eye in focus, is AI, it's an intelligence, and it's artificial.

    Great video once again. A camera that seems to bring a lot of interesting features for folks, perhaps at the expense of image quality. 4K that is cropped a lot for these features, so no longer 4k…a number of reviewers have noted this but on social media I don’t think anyone will notice or care. It still looks good enough. Overheating…yes, but it’s for short clips not longer videos. My gripe is largely the price for the target market….vloggers. It seems a lot for a few extra tools and of course lenses are expensive (and must be very wide to deal with the crop), but if you can afford it you get a great video tool for a solo creator. Very tempting, but imagine what the next follow up versions will add!

      Once you change to fullframe you will want to sell most of your apsc lenses. One of the big things on a FF body is the bokeh especially on wide and bright lenses. And also the possibility to zoom a little using prime lenses on fullframe. With apsc lenses you will loose a good part of the show.

    Thanks for this review 👍🏻 i personally think this is a great cam, when you using it as a b-cam 😉 I have the fx6 and for me I think the ZVE1 is the better option as an fx30. The overheating problem is not good, but it is not so important for me, because I don’t film so long projects. Für holidays I think this small cam would be really perfect 😀

      @DDHDTV the a6400 is an amazing camera for photography and reasonably good for video, but I want an apsc body with ibis, no record time limit, and hopefully 4k 60 with no crop. (And I don't want to pay 2k for it) Until then the a6400 is the best sony option.

  • @careylymanjones
    @careylymanjones Год назад

    I think the ZV-E1 would be a great travel camera. Great low light performance for indoor venues, such as museums (which usually aren't brightly lit, to preserve the artwork). One of the things that frustrates me with my A7iii, is the way noise levels go up as light levels go down. The ZV-E1, true to its A7Siii roots, is a low light beast. Travelers usually aren't shooting long clips, anyway, and with a little power discipline (shut it off when not actually shooting) I suspect the heat sensitivity would be manageable. Better rolling shutter plus burst mode give it an edge over the FX-30 as a stills camera, especially in low light. And the stabilization is second to none. If you're reasonably steady, you can leave the gimbal behind.
    And it's the cheapest Sony body with the AI focusing system. Focus uber alles. You can fix color, within reason. And you can fix exposure, within reason. But it's pretty hard to fix missed focus. You either hit focus or you didn't. And if you didn't, it's not a keeper.

      @@n3w549 Not sure I'd choose it for product photography. Where it excels is low light, which is not a factor for product photography. I'd pay a little more for the A7iv. It's a much better stills camera.

Probably some of the best 1080p in existence and it's for content creators. Not pro videographers or filmmakers perspective is everything. That is why they haven’t put breathing compensation on them. While if you can barely afford a body then you might not be able to afford cine glass.

    Arthur, I love your channel, but this one myth allows camera companies to produce worse cameras for us, let's stop! Fewer megapixels give you better low light performance if you look at both photos at 100% (a completely different field of view), but they give you WORSE low light performance if you look at those same photos with the same field of view, which is how you would normally compare them.
    This being said, sure, the zv-e1 has better low light performance at 12800 ISO when the "dual iso" kicks in and gives you a cleaner image. But bigger pixels don't acquire light faster and don't give you better low light performance if the sensor size is the same

As a casual but dedicated user I have not seen a reason to upgrade from my 6400. To have cameras with sd cards instead of built in ssd, no easy wi fi connections, not easy UI ect ect in. 2023 is a joke. I took my iPhone 14 to Florida and the photos were in a different league compared to fussing around with the raw photos from my Sony. The fact you can’t upload to sites like instagram from a camera is beyond me!
    Until camera manufacturers start making their cameras (talking the interface) more like phones and less like cameras from the early 2000’s I can’t and won’t see the point in upgrading
