Along with “Itchycoo Park,” “Hole in my Shoe “and “ I Can See For Miles”’ this Kenny Rogers and the First Edition song was on my psychedelic go-to-list,growing up! A perfect psychedelic song!
A classic from my youth. My parents liked his voice, but weren't into the song. Then, Kenny went solo, and they couldn't get enough of him. Ironically, my father resembled Kenny for a period of his life, white beard and all.

Glad you did the studio version as opposed to the live version that everyone else does. This is much better.

This was one of my favorite songs when I was in high school ☺️
It was actually Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. Pre 1970 it was just The First Edition. This was before he went solo in the country genre.
1968.... Me and my friend Joe Sosa (full blooded Indian artist) Drop two tabs of "Orange Sunshine" Acid.... Hitchhike down Pacific Coast Hwy to the "TOPLESS OPTIONAL" beach in Laguna Beach. The next several hours were/are unforgettable. This song was playing on the beach and they were dancing together while we just smiled....and Joe drew their pictures with colored pencils... they loved him/us after they saw what he was doing. Thanks for the memories.

When it was released in 1968 they were The First Edition, and that’s the name on my 45 rpm single. Later Kenny Roger’s and The First Edition before he went solo.

"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" is my next recommendation for you. When he says the last line of the song, it gets me every time. When you hear the song, you will know what I mean.

I was just not familiar with this recording, I have heard the song many times in my younger years, but I didn't know that Kenny Rogers and First Edition was the group singing it.
If it wasn’t for The Big Lebowski, I would have never heard this great song

Interesting song. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've listened to it. Are there references to other songs in the lyrics? Sundown? Eight miles high? I don't know, maybe it's just coincidence.

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition were mostly made up of former members of the "New Christy Minstrels". They covered country rock, pop & psychedelic rock. They had a lot of hits in the 60's-70's such as "Something's Burning", "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town", "But You Know I Love You", "Reuben James" etc. Kenny left in the mid 70's to pursue his solo career.

I saw Kenny Rogers and almost skipped this. I not a fan of Kenny's music. This is The First Edition. They had some great hits. Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town, Rueben James, Somethings Burning, Tell It All Brother, Heed the Call....
Kenny left the band and went solo. His music, to me, is just songs you listen to once, then you don't need to hear them again.

But this is probably psychedelic rock.
Country music was not doing well in the early/mid 70s. So Mr Rogers was doing something else.
The first edition was a fantastic group. You have to understand this was during the psychedelic age. Eight miles high refers to a Byrds song. Said to reflect the LSD experience, the song was intended to be a warning about the dangers of using the drug. I can't believe it was first recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis! Wow!
