I don't really understand. The Quest 2's higher resolution is not only harder to drive in general, but the compression will introduce a performance overhead on your pc. For people that only have a midrange PC, say something like a 1070 for example, a Rift S might just have the more clear experience. I think a Rift S is still worth it for someone who's on a budget with a midrange PC and who only cares about PCVR
@@jatoxo The performance overhead should be non-existent if done correctly, as real-time video encoders are on nearly every modern graphics card from AMD and nVidia. Once zero copy mode is enabled on those cards even H265/HEVC should be no problem with near zero performance loss. What I don't understand about the Quest 2 is why it doesn't have the ability to use DisplayPort over USB-C if you have a capable graphics card.
Rift S is actually great, but Oculus made it crap with bugs. I own a Quest 2 but I'm still currently using my Rift S since it's a whole lot more comfortable and I don't have to worry about battery life. Keep in mind I don't buy any Oculus exclusives.

I actually wouldn't take an Index over a Quest 2 personally, but I'm a bit of a resolution snob. IMO, the Index's wider FOV & better built-in audio just aren't worth giving up literally 50% of your pixels for. 🤷♂️ The Quest 2 is just on a COMPLETELY different level when it comes to sharpness/clarity, even if its image field is notably smaller. Thus I see the Index as one step forward but two steps back. ESPECIALLY when you consider that those much fewer pixels have to be stretched out over an even larger, wider area. I totally agree with Boz (head of Meta Reality Labs [aka what used to be Oculus]) in that pixel density (at least up to a point) is FAR more important in the immediate future to VR immersion than increased FOV. HTC made the right choice to prioritize resolution over FOV with the Vive Pro 2 and I'm hoping that Meta does the same w/ Quest 3 (sure, a moderately higher FOV would obviously be nice, but not if it comes at the expense of additional pixel density!)
@SomeChristianDude I'm genuinely surprised how many people still have this sentiment. You can just use a dummy FB account and then sideload a tool that removes anything FB related. It's not that difficult and worth it if you want high res PCVR for cheap. I've moved on from the Quest 2 to a HP G2 but I've never had problems using a dummy FB account and using the FB removal tool with Oculus Link.

@@NopeKickEm it's not necessarily obsolete, but isn't nearly as good as other PC VR headsets (although that isn't its goal). It's kind of nice now that there's several options actually tailored for different kinds of people. Like if you're on the fence, The Quest 2 is the gateway drug. Then I'm sure given time, you want to get into full body tracking and then next thing you know you're slapping down a thousand dollars for a valve index.
A friend of mine who uses an index actually bought a quest 2 just to try out, he now lends it out to people to convert them to VR (it worked on me as I now have an index too!)
Yeah I've had my quest 2 for about 7 months or so and I didn't use it that much in those 7 months. But man when I was having a bad day and decided to go hop in VRchat... best decision I've made in a long time lets put it that way. I've now been playing VRchat almost every day since that bad day happened. Seems the Index is still (specifically of properly commercially available headsets) the go-to headset for the most 'complete' VR setup. The price can't be ignored though and the fact that it isn't sold in some major regions (RIP Australia) is a negative. To summarise as simply as possible, it seems that the Quest 2 is the best entry level set, while the Index is the best enthusiast set.
Yeah thats what I did. I have a quest 2 right now and after experiencing the wonders that is VRchat I am DEFINITELY selling my quest 2 (or maybe not idk) and getting an Index. I got my Index in April after 4 weeks of waiting I knew it was the headset to go for in 2019 after looking around on alternatives for a year. @@nervaproject I don't, but I don't like the compromises on all the headsets out right now. The Index is too expensive, the Reverb G2 doesn't have a great range of tracking because of camera placement, and the Oculus Quest 2 has *facebook* .
@@PNolandS I don't think the Index is too expensive. The Index headset itself only costs $500, which is typical for a VR headset. The added price to the Index is for base stations and the awesome Index controllers, which are light-years ahead of what anyone else has on the market. They cost $500 because they're the best, and they're worth it. They are so worth it that other headset producers like Pimax, JVC, and HTC Vive are making their headsets compatible with the Index controllers or in some cases selling their headsets bundled with the Index controllers. This means if you get the full Index kit now and then a few years down the road a new headset comes out with a huge FOV and resolution, there is a good chance you'll be able to use your Index controllers and base stations with your headset upgrade. So about $500 worth of your $1000 Index purchase gets carried over to your next headset and gets re-used, potentially... adding value to your NEXT virtual reality headset purchase. The $1000 price tag looks a lot more reasonable when you consider half of it potentially gets re-used on your next headset purchase.
@@nervaproject I get the controllers are good, but given that im about to head off to college next year im going to be moving around a lot for the foreseeable future. No matter how good the controllers are, they're just going to be more trouble than they're worth (for me).

Crazy how much has changed over only a year. Seamless wireless pcvr with the quest with 120hz refresh rate kind of makes it the only option at this point. And in my opinion, with the higher resolution, high refresh rate and wireless play, the quest 2 basically blows the index out of the water.
In my experience the quest can be extremely hit or miss. My mom’s headset had a damaged fan out of the box that still functions, but only enough to prevent a fire hazard. It gets really hot and makes a loud noise. My brother’s headset lags to death on the home menu so hard he’s actually been put off turning it on and having to deal with the lag. It goes away completely when he gets into a game. And my headset works generally okay, but has some weird performance issues especially when recording, and also is pretty much useless for connecting to a PC. I’ve tried several cables, have an extremely capable computer, and still the resolution is so potatoed that I can literally count pixels of an object that’s two feet away from my face. The distance resolution scaling in a lot of pcvr games also brakes dramatically when I try to use the quest, meaning that if I’m trying to play something like Microsoft flight simulator, I can only go to airports I’ve been to several times before outside of vr, because I literally won’t be able to see the damn runway as anything more than a black shitstain until I get too close to pull out of any kind of landing attempt. All around, just a really poor experience with these headsets. All of these are relatively new (my mom’s has the most glaring issue and is also the newest), and they’re all relatively low-use. They just kinda arbitrarily suck. Obviously all just my experience, but I’m excited for a future when I may be able to try a new headset, especially a valve index. The native res might be lower, but because of the weird problems my headset has with pc, I guaranteed it will be a night and day difference in the actual resolution.
Sound quality, controller tracking, no compression, headset comfort, steam integration... The Quest doesn't blow shit. It's a 3D printed piece of plastic. It's great value but definitely not better.
In FOV with the G2 and Index, it doesn't matter too much because in video games you focus more on a certain object or objective. Peripherals help a lot, don't get me wrong. Being able to see a combine in Half-life Alyx 10 degrees farther to the right or left will help, however most people aren't trained enough to notice and react to that sort of stimuli to the eye. Another thing about the G2, it doesn't need a 2080 Super in order for it to be super clear. The headsets do have their own processors to help with their own individual resolutions. You may be able to run the G2 resolution on a 2060 super and allow it to be super clear. The only thing that would hinder it is the graphical fidelity. It can still be super clear but have worse graphics.
Same here, I've only ever had a psvr and I hate it so I'm pretty excited too!

Hello Releric, the Quest 2 is the best economic experience you can get out of all of these. And if you want the PCVR experience by getting a gaming PC and using Oculus Link or Virtual Desktop to do so it's very good. Of course technically speaking if you're a hardcore VR enthusiast you would get the Valve Index or HP Reverb for the best graphics fidelity in PCVR. But the Quality control on the headset and controllers for Valve Index is an issue. Thrill Seeker has done a video explaining this saying he's had to replace them twice in periods of 6 months. Also the HP Reverb doesn't have capacitive controllers. Meaning they can't sense individual finger movements when you touch them like other manufacturers provide. And both Valve Index & HP Reverb require stationary camera sensors and aren't portable like Quest 2. It just adds to the experience being able to share VR so easily with friends and family members. In my opinion Quest 2 is the best all around bang for your buck considering these factors. Let me know if you have any questions as I am a Quest 2, HTC Vive, and previously Quest 1 + Rift S owner. I also am heavily involved in the industry as demo VR for a major tech through a Brand Ambassador company.
i just got my hp reverb g2 today and was so exited. now i feel like i have to get the base stations and the valve controllers to make it feel right tho.
I don't know what I would buy in 2021, because it is now Oct 2022. LOL I have bought just recently the HP Reverb G2 V2 headset and still evaluating this product. Even with that headset insert removed to get eyes closer, I still see a small area sweet spot which is clear and outside of the sweet spot the rest of the lenses are fuzzy or blurry. My IPD is 60, so I am at the bottom of the manual adjust of the headset. My Rift S has better clarity on the lenses than this HP headset. How close to the lenses do we have to get to not see this effect? Anyway, that is my take on the newer HP Reverb. Unless I am doing something wrong. I don't think so. Take care.
Yeah agree the sweet spot on the G2 is awful... Then you add to that everything outside the sweet spot is kinda blurry for some reason.. All this adds up to "well technically it has a decent field of view but actually it doesn't" ... I went back to a samsung plus headset and even though the res kinda sucks.. the it looks better in my opinion because wider fov, Oled panels , and clarity is even though out the lens...
The quest 2 is the best right now for me because I can play pcvr wirelessly with that price with everything else on top. The index is amazing but for the price it needs to be undisputed. I wish a new index would come out next year with a higher res and wireless capabilities.
@@clownavenger0 you can do 120hz on the quest but the resolution makes it really difficult. On top of that Link at 120hz has even more compression artifacts
I already have a kinect along with an xbox i dont use, so maybe i can sell the xbox for like 100 dollars(since its an old xbox) and keep the kinect of it then save up for a quest two AND BOOM I GOT A FULL VR SET UP FOR 200 DOLLARS

any update on the G2 tracking? index is not available in my country, and I'm ready to upgrade my quest one and only play PC VR games. I mainly pay pavlov and Skyrim VR these days
Just got my G2 a week ago...people really made it sound like the tracking was terrible but after a week I've honestly had no complaints from a variety of games. Is it the best? No, but certainly it is worth the high resolution you get with the G2. It's an awesome headset.
it depends, for me its much more worth it the rift S since now its at the same price and you dont need the cable, unless you want to show the vr in other places its better an easy to use the rift S than the quest 2 since you need a much better pc to run it
I think ThrillSeeker's recommendation against buying the Rift S is right given the options, but it's not a terrible headset, and is currently my preferred headset. The quest 2 may have a higher resolution panel, but this is a compressed image coming through a USB cable vs a raw DisplayPort feed. Carmack said in a keynote that you will always notice the compression artifacts. While it is easier to put on the Quest 2, it's front heavy nature makes it uncomfortable fairly quickly. The Rift S is a bit tricky to get on just right, but once I do I could wear it literally all day. I could take a nap in this thing with the right pillow haha. If your eyes fit within the IPD, and your goal is truly only PCVR gaming, the Rift S is the most affordable and most comfortable PCVR headset bar none.
To be honest I'm watching this after buying a VR Headset and I've chosen the quest 2 mostly for the wireless pc vr capabilities, the standalone capabilities and well the price and tbh this guide kind of confirms what I thought before hand, the index is superior but kinda expensive and not as easy to carry around and use in different places + wired while the quest 2 is hands down the best bang for the buck and especially for VR noobs like me a great point to start.
Thing is between rift s and quest 2 good luck running the quest 2 on a budget gaming pc, meanwhile rift s will be fine. Also better strap, its directly displaying the image so it might as well look very similar while being much less demanding. Sure less features but simpler and easier to run.
I totally agree, and with the addition of air link why would you get anything else. Sure there are things that are slightly better then it on other headsets, but not $600 worth.
You mentioned something that is completely false. I use the HP Reverb G2 in VRchat with the default recommended binding profile and I have complete access to all 8 facial expressions, even combinations of those expressions using combinations of left and right grip and trigger + backwards and forward on right joystick. RUclipsrs and reviewers like you mentioning these false statements about the Reverb G2 and VRchat almost made me steer clear of it, and thank goodness I didn't. The G2 is an awesome device, I've had zero issues, even the tracking is great and I have not experienced any of the issues you've mentioned.
The fact Valve made the Index is what is going to change my mind, I'd much prefer comfort and ease of use over anything else (plus the index is apparently the most comfortable one to wear)
I currently have a rift cv1 and never use it because it is just so horrible. The Index looks great, but my problem with it is all the reports of serious reliability issues it has
Thanks for the video, I'm planning on upgrading my CV1 to an Index. Only thing that worries me is that although steam's tool to check if your pc can run the index says my pc can, I think my graphics card barely meets that requirement( RX580) and don't know if that will be an issue.
I have an RX570 and most VR games I’ve played ran absolutely fine on my Reverb G2, which has a higher resolution than the Index. Just don’t expect to get 90fps super consistently, especially in higher quality games. (also I don’t play that many graphically impressive VR games so take my advice with a grain of salt 😅)
Dude an RX 580 is perfectly fine for VR. Think I'm crazy? I, for shits and giggles, plugged my quest 2 into my laptop (i5 7300hq, GTX 1050 4GB) and got a not great but usable experience with lighter VR games. And that 1050 is more like a 1030 GDDR5 on the desktop. So yeah you're good man!
I got a rift s instead of the quest 2 because of its battery, i dont want to be limited to 2 hours. I mostly play rec room all day, and some other games too.
5:15 This was written seemingly assuming that Oculus Link would never be updated to take full advantage of the Quest 2's XR2, which is EXACTLY what happened. Running Oculus Link w/ a quality USB 3.0 cable these days gives an almost imperceptibly different experience than if you were running it natively over a display output ala HDMI/DP. Aka, the Quest 2 is now SIGNIFICANTLY sharper/clearer in terms of visuals than the Index.

they increase prices of hard-to-get stuff.. like the g2 at release, or even worse: the nvidia gtx 30 series. the 3070 is listed at about almost double the price recommended by nvidia. as a matter of fact, amazon is nothing more than a parasite. online shopping is anti social, clogging massively our roads which means stress and pollution, destroys more jobs than creating, quietly invading our privacy and intimacy, hardly paying any taxes, refusing workers rights, initiating big political campaigns and putting armies of protesters on the streets to turn political decisions in their favor etc etc.. snafu, i guess
I have the quest 2 as my first headset. And i am really enjoying it . The price is really great for what you get. All I did was get the Audio strap Frankenquest and a 16 foot link cable (don’t waste money on the oculus one, its over priced) . To make the oculus more comfortable because the strap it comes with is so uncomfortable and painful So i have a pretty good PC , but my GPU is old and because of all the scalping i can’t upgrade yet. I have a 1060 6Gb and with the quest 2 I actually can play Half life Alyx at high setting . And it runs pretty smooth. The fact that you can play wireless too is legit awesome, and frankly the facebook argument really don’t bother me. Who doesn’t have a facebook account these days anyways..probably a small percentage of people living in modern society. But regardless What I did is , I setup a new facebook account for solely entertainment purpose and that works fine by me. I do wanna try the valve index tho, to see how different it actually is because if i was to upgrade i was thinking of the valve index or maybe the valve index 2 when it comes out and also because Half life Alyx is my favorite game
I've have just purchased an Rift s (On sale) a few days ago because I wanted to try the VR experience. On the first day i got everything set up with playspace steam vr etc. Then came weekend and I started playing at 12pm, and what felt like minutes was actually hours of gameplay. I've literally got stopped because the sun had gone down and the headset lost tracking of the playspace. When I'm done building my new pc I will definitely upgrade to something better with fullbody tracking. VR is just awesome.
If it's working properly for you, I think you'll have a good time for quite some time to come. (And I actually kinda prefer the slightly smaller touch controllers of the Q1 and Rift S, getting used to it, but still)
everytime i watch videos like this i feel really sad the rift S is pratically the only headset avaliable where i live, and if i adjust the prices it would be about 1000$ (no joke) and then lists like this really breaks me, like i really want a quest 2, or the index that i wanted since it was announced not only are prices just absurdly high, they are sometimes just flat out unavaliable for purchase
"worst issue other than needing a facebook account" uh no i think that's the worst issue and is a complete deal breaker for the Quest 2 for anybody that has managed to abstain from having a facebook account.
Ahah! It was my first thought too! Nevertheless if Facebook is forced to sell Oculus, then forget the low price of Q2. The latter just covers the production costs. Facebook makes profit through data mining, that's the reason why you're forced to subscribe facebook. And even through add-ons like elite strap, face gasket, link cable and so on, they are sold at very high price. The new Oculus company would have to sell Q2 at the real price, at least 400$, 450$ with decent strap and 500$ with decent audio. For 100$ more you have the G2, actually the best headset so far for quality of display and audio.

thank you very cool furry man.
Yeah after doing some googling I found it surprising that the index is still so dang good
I actually wouldn't take an Index over a Quest 2 personally, but I'm a bit of a resolution snob. IMO, the Index's wider FOV & better built-in audio just aren't worth giving up literally 50% of your pixels for. 🤷♂️
The Quest 2 is just on a COMPLETELY different level when it comes to sharpness/clarity, even if its image field is notably smaller.

@@nervaproject I don't, but I don't like the compromises on all the headsets out right now. The Index is too expensive, the Reverb G2 doesn't have a great range of tracking because of camera placement, and the Oculus Quest 2 has *facebook* .
@@PNolandS
I don't think the Index is too expensive.
@@PNolandS More trouble than they're worth because of the price, or more trouble than they're worth because of the need to set up base stations and stuff?
Also, if you're going to college next year, that sounds like a good reason to play VR right now... because you won't have time when you start college. And you don't want to be distracted with thinking about or playing on a VR headset while you're in college. (Trust me I know from personal experience... the desire to try out VR can screw up a semester). It's better to play whatever games you want to play before you go so that it won't distract you and you can "get it out of your system" as people say.

It can still be super clear but have worse graphics.
im getting the quest 2 for christmas and im so excited!
You should beeee

Even with that headset insert removed to get eyes closer, I still see a small area sweet spot which is clear and outside of the sweet spot the rest of the lenses are fuzzy or blurry. My IPD is 60, so I am at the bottom of the manual adjust of the headset.

The HP reverb has a signifigantly higher resolution over the rift s, surprised you didn't see that.
Yeah agree the sweet spot on the G2 is awful... Then you add to that everything outside the sweet spot is kinda blurry for some reason.. All this adds up to "well technically it has a decent field of view but actually it doesn't" ...

The Index looks great, but my problem with it is all the reports of serious reliability issues it has
I am gonna get the q2 for Christmas!!!
got one launch day, totally worth it. Try to make sure you get the 256gb version you will thank yourself later!
Nice!! It's so much fun, and if you run out of stuff to do, check out sidequest on a computer, it has loads of content!
I’m getting one too
Gratz
got mine 2 weeks ago - def great hmd have fun ^^
I had a heart attack when you uploaded because I thought it was tuesday already
haha me tooo
Hahaha same

G2 with index controllers is the only way for me.
Just a heads up.
Quest 2 Elite Straps are now back in stock and being sold again.
This video makes me feel bad for being a Rift S user :*(
I don't think it matters to the majority of people what headset you choose, VR is VR
@@CreeperXteo Well, I'll be buying an Index as soon as they make them wireless
ahh don't feel bad if it works for you and you enjoy vr when you play that's what matters. I know tons of rift s users that love their headset.
@@Diiffer Well that's awesome. I think the Index is a great investment for anyone as long as your budget is ok with it
@Lucky Ducky toxic
Facebook must be making good money from logging in with facebook on oculus. With all the problems the facebook login is causing.
At least they’re getting sued for it
@T data sold/information for future ads
@@izakovadia6991 PIHole FTW ^^
Im very amazed that for basically all requirements, a £300 headset like the quest 2 is a solid reccomendation.
and i'm amazed how few people care about their privacy.
@@mahe4 you are on youtube... be it on a phone, laptop, tablet or whatever. I dont care how careful you think you are, you are already being spied on. The quest is just the next device to do it.
@@i3enj462 it's not so much about being spied on, but what social media algorithms do to people.
Watch the netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma".
Its a big contributor to spread misinformation and creates depression in people.
@@mahe4 Yeah I've seen the doc. Its fucked up. I dispise facebook and most other social media platforms. But the quest steals your data, doesnt force you to go on facebook. Thats why I said its not much different from owning a phone, just steals different data mostly.
My issue with the quest 2 is less the privacy concerns, and more the fact that facebook can just go "nah your headset is unusable now" at any time, which i'm not okay with.
Ima just wait until the deca gear comes out to see if it’s good
I just saw this and in getting the rift s BUT at least I can play onward, beat saber and job sim AND half life alex
I do love my half life alyx
You can get all of those games, besides half life alyx on the quest store
You can get all of those games but HLA on the Quest Store, and even for HLA you can use Link to play it, as well as all other Rift/SteamVR games.
@Sargent Winter Lmfao that video was ages ago. Link has improved significantly, especially in the last six months or so.
@Sargent Winter alright lol. could potentially be a port issue. running an rtx 2070 and ryzen 7 3700x paired with 16 gigs. no crashes, and i'm even using the quest 1 cable (albiet Quest 2 headset) which is usb 2.0
This is my favorite video on the channel ! It’s perfect on telling you what vr headset is for you! I’m getting the oculus quest 2 but I think there all awesome!!
i had a plan of buying the valve index but i can't find any on sale. i can only find some on amazon but that cost more for some reasons i don't know about.
so should i just buy a htc vive cosmos elite beacuse i was looking for some base station tracking please help me
they increase prices of hard-to-get stuff.. like the g2 at release, or even worse: the nvidia gtx 30 series. the 3070 is listed at about almost double the price recommended by nvidia. as a matter of fact, amazon is nothing more than a parasite. online shopping is anti social, clogging massively our roads which means stress and pollution, destroys more jobs than creating, quietly invading our privacy and intimacy, hardly paying any taxes, refusing workers rights, initiating big political campaigns and putting armies of protesters on the streets to turn political decisions in their favor etc etc..
snafu, i guess
okay i'll resolve with the quest 2. sounds like it performs, looks, feels, and overall plays well
lmao that pfp
I have the quest 2 as my first headset. And i am really enjoying it . The price is really great for what you get. All I did was get the Audio strap Frankenquest and a 16 foot link cable (don’t waste money on the oculus one, its over priced) . To make the oculus more comfortable because the strap it comes with is so uncomfortable and painful
So i have a pretty good PC , but my GPU is old and because of all the scalping i can’t upgrade yet.
Thrillseeker: you need a decent pc with 2080 super
Me: *Laughs in 3080*
Ah, I see.
A fellow Man of "30 Seriuosity", we shall commit.
VR is just awesome.
good mixture of presentational skills and technical knowledge.
15 minute video but feels like it's constantly getting straight to the point
"Wow I Want One Of theese" *watches in 240p*
thrill to rift s : u suck
rift s : what about my feelings
Damn, I’m really regretting getting the rift s now. Thanks for the information
If it's working properly for you, I think you'll have a good time for quite some time to come. (And I actually kinda prefer the slightly smaller touch controllers of the Q1 and Rift S, getting used to it, but still)
everytime i watch videos like this i feel really sad
the rift S is pratically the only headset avaliable where i live, and if i adjust the prices it would be about 1000$ (no joke)
and then lists like this really breaks me, like i really want a quest 2, or the index that i wanted since it was announced
not only are prices just absurdly high, they are sometimes just flat out unavaliable for purchase
i have the rift s and ive throw the controllers at my wall haven't broken and also rift s is great still
i’m getting the quest 2 for christmas so i’ve been binge watching these types of videos for fun lmao
What do you think of it so far?
"worst issue other than needing a facebook account"
uh no i think that's the worst issue and is a complete deal breaker for the Quest 2 for anybody that has managed to abstain from having a facebook account.
Exactly why i won’t get one unfortunately
I might get a quest 2 if the lawsuits include oculus. Fingers crossed
It doesn’t nothing gonna happen go buy something else simp
Rift S is a great option, the occulous platform is way better than windows mixed reality and it has better tracking and great edge to edge clarity
What about glasses friendly???? I need to know about that the most
If you are looking for glasses friendly then I would recommend you HTC Vive. Recommended by www.thevrgen.com/best-vr-headset-for-glasses-buying-guide-and-reviews/
