Love your videos, I was waiting for you to do this comparison. I'm still up in the air on which one to buy for the wife, but I think you helped me lean more to the Telluride thanks.
I’ve owned two Explorers and an Expedition and liked all of them. Just purchased the Telluride with the xPro package and it’s outstanding. Right now, we prefer the look, style and features of the Telluride.
Big change! What made you decide to go for a Telluride this time around outside the look? What are some of the big differences you like and dislike between them?
@@CarsWithSteve the reliability with the Explorer is not great. It has had many online negative reviews where it ranks poorly. That influenced us. The warranty on the Telluride, however, is excellent.
@@CarsWithSteve Thanks. And thanks for the video. I also purchased a new 2023 Nissan Frontier. Did a little video of what I have added to it. ruclips.net/video/oKxyxEJNk5w/видео.html
Recently purchased a 2023 SX Prestige X-Pro Telluride. Very happy! It would have been nice to have a panoramic sun roof but not a big deal. In honesty it would be hard to go wrong with either vehicle.
Nice trim level choice on the Telluride! The SX is packed with features. It’s an odd choice by Kia to not have a full panoramic roof in this but what do you do 🤷♂️
I had an explorer and an edge…the motors on the pano sunroofs all seem to go out or slow down over time, I was happy the telluride had the split and hope it improves reliability of opening and closing. I stopped opening my Edge’s after 7-8 years (owned it for 10) for fear I wouldn’t be able to close it haha.
Great videos and I have a new 2023 explorer but that Kia warranty length and mileage is not similar, much stronger and very impressive and shows their confidence in the build quality.
Thank you! Bit of a difference in warranty for sure - the extended Ford ones are too costly but it would be a bit better if the base warranty was extended. How are you liking your Explorer so far?
My 2021 explorer was more nimble and faster than the telluride but had a lot of hard shifts. my 2024 telluride so far has been nothing but smooth and responsive in motor and transmission
We have a few of the explorers and definitely great vehicles for a family of 4 BUT! Never being a KIA fan at all, the Telluride has us thinking when the explorer lease expires in 2024. I can’t wait to test drive a Telluride.
If you're in the 3.5L V6 Explorer it'll be more powerful than the Telluride for sure but it's a balance of tech, towing needs and style! Do a back to back drive of the Telluride and a new Explorer - the Explorer should be getting an upgrade either 2024 or 2025 model
I’ve owned 3 explorers. My first one being the 2 door model back in 1990. Then a 2016 and a 2020. Now I own a 2024 telluride. I think my main reason for switching brands was a much better price on the telluride and a way more modern style. Few extra and unexpected whistles and bells on the telluride too.
Great to hear from someone who has owned both! Telluride definitely has some great tech options compared to the Explorer but it looks like Ford is addressing that with the upcoming 2025 redesign. How have you found it day to day in comparison?
@@CarsWithSteve I like the aesthetics so much better on the telluride and the technology. Not too much tech differences though. The telluride has the feature where you can take your foot off of the brake at a red light and more safety alarms. One small thing I like is that it alerts you when you’re stopped and don’t notice the cars in front of you have left when the light turns green it’ll ring and say the lead car has taken off. (Guilty of checking messages at long lights). Some other things I don’t like on the telluride: if you don’t upgrade to the premium stereo, the standard one is the worst I’ve ever heard in any car (wish I had) another negative is the absolutely almost unbearable “new car smell”. Like it’s bad. Really bad, I’m still dealing with it. Telluride has been getting horrible gas mileage. I’ve been averaging 13mpg which is about the same as my old GMC Yukon. Now the Yukon always fishtailed on wet roads, the telluride handles the elements the best of any suv I’ve owned. The explorer had a very peppy engine and you zip through traffic like a sports car. The telluride’s ride would be closer to the Yukon. Plenty of power but it builds rather than launches. Oh one more thing I hate on the telluride… the gas pedal is attached to the floor which is so weird usually ur heel rests on the floor and it’s just harder to depress which can be a safety issue and this setup makes it harder to get your foot from the gas pedal to the brake. Your foot, when you switch from gas to brake, hits the side of the brake and you have to bend you knee and get it over the brake. All of this takes precious seconds that may matter in certain situations…. I live in California. So traffic is a nightmare to begin with. Ok sorry this is so long. And to be fair, I’ve only owned the Kia about 3 weeks. Still adjusting. My final recommendation is buy the Kia over the ford but get the top trim and that gas pedal is something to carefully consider
The lead car takeoff feature and blind spot monitor in the cluster are pretty neat. Lol first I've heard of a weird lingering new car smell, is it at least tapering off? Really appreciate the detail though, especially since you've owned them both. I've always thought entry level trims are ok for people who just want an A to B ride but agree with you 100% you get the most value out of the higher trims. What mode are you driving in? Have you tried switching out to Eco to see if it improves your fuel economy?
@@CarsWithSteve hey Steve , yes the “new car” smell is lessening … thank goodness! I’ve always enjoyed that new car smell , first time in my life it’s unbearably horrible. I just got to thinking when I test drove the car I didn’t notice any bad smell…. When I picked up the car after detail they had placed all the all weather floor mats-- all 3 rows and a trunk liner--which were previously sealed up in a huge plastic bag. Maybe the smell is from the rubber mats. Driving mode: started off in just the default (can’t remember if it’s called comfort on the Kia) then switched to eco. The eco mode took my mpg from 10 to 13. Just the other day I switched to smart mode (not for the mpg’s but to see how it handles ) But again to be fair it’s only been 3 1/2 weeks of ownership and driving in California, you spend a longer amount of time completely at a dead stop in traffic than you do actually moving (no joke). Most intersections have 8 sets of lights to rotate through… hence the reason I either zone out or start reading emails or texts. I’m expecting my mpgs to keep rising as it breaks in. All told I’m satisfied with the telluride. Worst 2 features are the gas pedal connected to the floor and not hanging from above like the brake pedal. Best 2 features: handling, especially in stormy ⛈️ conditions and you get all the tech and comfort and whistles and bells you’d find on a Mercedes Benz all wrapped up at a MUCH lower price. Oh another bonus that just occurred to me. When I owned my Benz (I’ve owned at least 5 …all sedans) every scheduled maintenance or oil change is over $500. Not so on a Kia!!! Another win.
Oh the car smell plus the mats would do it for sure! I just picked up some rubber resistance bands and man... it's been a rough week trying to get the smell out of my house haha. I'm really surprised that your fuel economy is so low though. Most Telluride owners I know are closer to 20 mpg but being in stop and go traffic would make sense. That traffic must drive you nuts! Haha, the low cost of maintenance is a huge plus for sure
Great information/comparison Steve.. one question pertaining to each vehicle.. I love the tech but I did not see an HUD ... is HUD an available option ? and if it is what is your opinion on the heads up display.
Thanks Jim, appreciate that! I did mention the HUD very briefly for the Telluride which is available in the SX trim levels in North America. The Explorer doesn't have the option for it at all. Being able to see your speed, blind spot monitor and nav without having to look around is a luxury but a pretty neat feature. I like the way it's done in the Telluride.. just wish Ford had brought it to the Explorer lineup.. which might happen in the next generation model
Exactly! Ford has the high output in the Expedition Stealth so it's not like it can't be done on this platform too. Don't think a RUclipsr has done a 3.0L engine swap either.. that would be kind of neat to see
Having owned a 2021 Explorer Hybrid, I would suggest buying the Telluride over the Explorer. I got rid of the Explorer one year after buying new. I took a loss, but I was happy to move on to something else.
You made a good choice. The telluride is hands down a better vehicle than a Explorer. Telluride rides better and is more reliable. Explorer is overpriced and is filled with cheap material(rattles everywhere).
How is the Ford Explorer with the very base model 2.3 engine and 10 speed automatic transmission/ Does the transmission shift smoothly overall? I like the Ford style and is it going to be restyled in 2024?

The Explorer is going through an upgrade for 2024 - specs haven't officially been announced just yet though. Slight exterior facelift and redesigned interior is there though
I had a 2021 XLT sport package explorer and it did have hard shifts as what I would say was a common occurrence in the lower gears. For the most part it was smooth and drive fine but it was not flawless execution
I wanted to also let you know that I really appreciate your reviews, but I was comparing the high-end Explorer to an Hyundia Palisade Calligraphy just because I want Massaging or Ergo motion driver's seat!
