Got tired of waiting for Honda/Yamaha and company to make something decent and not too expensive, just sold my crf 300 l a few weeks ago, great bike, nice luggable engine but bad suspension and brakes for someone who wants to go a bit faster (also Honda OEM parts and service too expensive for what it is) and also a bit on the heavier side (yes, weight is relative but 142 kgs on tight technical terrain is still heavy imo), just ordered an AJP SPR 250, same power, 20/30 kg less, superb aluminium/steel frame, Sachs fully adjustable suspension and Brembo brakes, with bash plate and handguards included, rear tank lowering even more the centre of gravity and a nice spreaded gearbox for dual sport riding with dirt bias and an acceptable 3000 Kms between oil changes, for just a bit over 6000€, that's the same as the Honda offering but imo much better bang for your buck, and the engine is the more than proven Husky/SWM unit, just my 2 cents for people who, as me, are tired of the big 4/euro manufacturers making the same cheap stuff year after year without innovating much and not offering the best bang for your buck (btw sorry for any grammar mistakes, I'm from Spain hahah)

I love the CRF Rally's utilitarian design, suspension and balance of off-road and on-road capabilities... however, the Rally has one HUGE defect that makes no sense to me, why does it come exclusive with a 300cc? I can understand why someone might prefer such a tiny displacement, but it's TOTALLY underpowered to go anywhere further than your local Wallmart. That's what makes me so exited about the KTM 390 Adventure! It'll be (likely) a capable off-road machine with comparable suspension (though hopefully regulated), that will have a real thumper, contained within it!

This new 390 absolutely looks more off-road focused.... 👍 Even though I just bought a 2020 DRz400 to use as a light ADV \ trail bike, I'm happy to see more small ADVs coming out as capable off-road bikes... Because, in the real world, with us real riders these small machines make the best dual-sports and are actually usable all conditions.

So good you mentioned the front mud guard... as I mentioned in previous "Adventure bike" videos... need some space between the tire and mudguard, especially in real "adventure situations" in Australia, compared to Europe.
That was the first thing I noticed. At my age, almost 54, (and knee reconstruction next year) I might have to move on from 15 years on a WR450 with big Acerbis tank.. soon, soon-ish ... maybe... and an "Adventure bike" like this, with decent travel and the Dunlops I have used for 20+ years would/could be the go.
With the good tires, and weight, I can see that this bike could be a good bike to get you from Cairns to Cape York at the end of the dry season, if riding with a group of friends. At the least, you could go Cairns to Weipa, both places the a great location to go on an ADVENTURE ride in Australia.
    Nice update, thanks Solid!

i hope the weight will be less than 690enduro. 170kg seems little bit high.. the design is stunning. If we can see this model in the fields, it would be a nice upgrade that can be purchased instead of the Honda CRF300 or CFmoto 450MT

  • @Dschinghiss

They didnt want to give the people the 390 they wanted for many years, so now that RE and CFMoto are releasing actually capable small adventure bikes, KTM feels the pressure. Classic.
Lets see how heavy the new 390 will be, at least KTM can build their bikes quite lightweight so maybe that will save them.

Hopefully the ergonomics make it suitable for hours of stand up riding. The old 390 ADV was a non-starter due to sit-down ergos. I would like to see a 390 Enduro as well... though would rather it be a "490". I'm hoping we will rediscover that 1/2 liter engines were the sweet spot all along, before the demise of the ICE.

Dad an i both had 390s an both went back for refunds at 147 and 269 miles riddled with issues, they dont cover the TFT in the UK under warranty ite a major issue at altitude and in winter expensive part to replace.
Dads had tons of issues with the fly by wire as well.
Luckily we managed to get our money back. Its a shame as they were fun to ride (standing up position was rubbish) the exhaust position looks a nightmare on the new one for water ingress lets hope they move it.
Great video Solid, i hope they get it right this time round.

I recall how eagerly people looked forward to the launch of the current 390ADV, only to be disappointed by low ground clearance, reliability issues, lack of torque unless you thrash the revs, cramped ergos for many. It flopped in sales even with the marketing hype. Reliability is the biggest problem with all KTMs. I wouldn't wait for this if the new Himalayan takes off.

What a lot of people don't realize about the weight and power figures is that the A2 license restriction caps peak power to 47 and it caps power to weight ratio as well
So the 40 to 45 HP bike weighing 160 odd to 180 odd kilograms is what the manufacturer aims for.
You need 40 HP minimum for cruising at 80 mph and reaching the tonne
Its not like they intentionally make things heavier - rather they design it so that they can reduce costs involved in weight shedding (mostly using steel instead of aluminum).
If you look at any of the real dirt bikes they easily shed 30 KG or more for similar power

Looks more like a smaller version of the 690 Enduro R to me, with an 890 windshield and a 390 tank at the front. The 690 is 145 kg dry weight or about 158 kg wet weight, so this new 390 could be around 150 kg wet (not 170 to 180 kg). It'll be quite popular if it is lower weight than 690 Enduro R, lower seat height, lower price but still enough hp to satisfy most riders. Cheers

Solid: The 2024 390 duke is lighter than the outgoing model. Lighter wheels and engine, but HEAVIER frame, results in a 2kg, from memory, lighter bike. The engine is not simply stroked, according to KTM it’s a completely new engine design. Yep, every review of the new duke is extremely positive, nice improvement everywhere, especially the engine tractability. And of course there are multiple videos of this fangled new engine shitting its pants. Especially fascinating to see through the oil level view glass is the engine oil boiling away 😂. I’m unhealthily obsessed over the potential of this new model as the adventure. I’m also NOT going to buy buying one from the first years production run. And perhaps unlike the majority here I personally don’t want spokes and longer travel. It’s still fundamentally a road bike and other than rough as hell rocky bush-country roads I am not going to be asking it to be what it isn’t, a dirt bike. So if the new adventure isn’t pleasant enough for longer trips or daily commutes the duke will scrambler mods would suit my needs better.

Don't forget a 1978 Honda XL500S was about the same at 135kg dry.

Partly because of mandatory regs- front and rear ABS, fuel injection and pump, larger heavier muffler, cat converter, evap emissions gear etc. Other things like larger fuel tank capacity, bigger brakes. The DRZ is just a basic old tech dirt bike, which is fine if that's what you want. But hardly comparable to this.

no emissions standarts, no cat, no ABS, etc.. that was a wonderful time@@kalaharimine

I agree! My CRF300L weighs 140kg and it has all the emissions and ABS! I REALLY want a low weight, high quality bike with good comfort, suspension and power, which this KTM has the opportunity to offer. It would fit nicely between my 1200GS & Husqvarna 501.

Thank you for the A2 explanation, here in the US, I never heard of such a regulation. That being the case wouldn't it be nice if KTM produced a US version with a lighter weight??? @@delusion2987

Interesting setup and a actual alternative to it's cousin the CF Moto 450MT which seems a bit more touring orientated than this one. Good choice to keep them different enough as to appeal to different riders! (apart from the obvious differences in engine configuration of course)

By the time KTM releases the new KTM 390 rally, I guess RE would launch a lighter Himalayan with lower price and beat them, RE CEO famously says we are ten steps ahead of competition, lets see how this battle goes

NOtice the low slung muffler, under the frame. When its released there will be a big bazooka in the normal place so extra weight. Even 175kg is a fail in my book, especially with only 45PS. Lets hope this doesn't end up as the T7 Mark ii, taking years to be released.

390 must be comfortably under 180kg to be interesting in my view.
Why would you go for it if it isn't 20kg under the 700+cc bikes?

This question gets asked every time. Learner license approved, way cheaper, bigger bike generally carry their weight higher so actually feel heaver. And some just like riding small engine bikes.
