  • Since I did not really know anyone who previously underwent a Hysterectomy, I wanted to share some tips for a fairly smooth road to recovery after a Hysterectomy. Some of the tips i'm sharing I had to find out the hard way of what should have happened. A select few were doctors orders.

Had hysterectomy 2 weeks ago, started feeling better after a week and started doing chores. Huge mistake! I stated up again with the pain and so much discomfort. Ladies, give your body weeks to recover ❤

Everyone is different. I had robotoic + 5" bikini incision. Showered 2 days post op. I had a BM 3 days post op. Took Miralax and stool softners. Been getting up on my own since 4 days post op. Cooked my own breakfast at 5 days post op. I feel great. Just a little sore. All this only on Advil & Tylenol. I am blessed to have such a great, easy recovery.

Hi there. I had my hysterectomy where all was removed. I am day 5 of my recovery. What I have found that works for stool softener is magnesium pills along with Metamucil tablets. Plenty of Vitamin C and water help in the recovery as well. Also for the gas pain and just the feeling of being so uncomfortable I found that Active Charcoal tablets will take the gas away. Hope these tips help.

I just had a total hysterectomy plus the removal of a 9 cm tumor two weeks ago (it wasn't cancerous!) My surgery was at 11 am, I don't remember much of the rest of the day other than the pain. In and out of sleep because of the medications. I wasn't really ready to walk but I did sit up in the chair for about 4 hours, tilted back slightly or I couldn't take the pain. Breakfast was toast and eggs, I told them I'm allergic to wheat and eggs when I checked in, I nibbled on it and threw it up. I needed a different diet. I'm also allergic to aspartame and since for some reason unknown to me having a hysterectomy can mess with your blood sugar, mine was 270 and I'm not normally a diabetic (even though I had to have my blood sugar checked and was given insulin a few times to get my blood sugar down, anyway, they kept sending me everything sugar free. I felt sure they were trying to starve me to death. It's a very good thing I had the candy they told me to bring, it helps to get the stomach awake after the surgery. lunch was salmon and mashed potatoes. not bad. dinner was baked chicken and more mashed potatoes. again, not bad. Keeping your pain under control is a MUST but get up and walk, you have to get that gas out. Don't try to tough it out you'll only make matters worse. Don't try to do anything without help, you will hurt yourself. Plan to wear loose fitting dress (and maybe no underwear) home! I had a 5 inch incision from belly button down and garments don't work out well unless you're wearing a belly band which luckily the gave me. I wore my belly band for this 2 weeks to give my body time to recover. I take it off to sleep now, but during the day if I'm up it's on. Whatever you do, don't do any lifting! There are stitches on the inside you can't see! Definitely get something for constipation, you're going to need it! Plan ahead with large gauze pads and paper style tape. There will be stitches you need to keep covered. Take care everyone. The pain does go away after a few days.

I'm 54 years old and had a radical hysterectomy 6 weeks ago. I was like you- didn't really know what to expect, but had talked to a few women who had tough recoveries. I had a fibroid and adenomyosis and had spent several weekends in bed with heavy bleeding and had to go to the emergency room once for severe pain. I postponed my surgery for after the holidays and a vacation, not knowing what my recovery would be like. I spent one night iin the hospital and took one dose of ibuprofen while I was there. I don't know if I just felt so much better afterwards than I did before, but I had a remarkably easy recovery. I had to remind myself to not over-do. I'm so thankful to have this behind me, my only regret is that I put it off and suffered 3 months longer than I needed to.

This was such good advice. I took the stool softeners and still had bowel problems. Everyone I know has said within a week they felt like new. Here it is 6 days after my surgery and I still hurt badly. A few adds... Full bladder and peeing may hurt, laughing may hurt, gas will hurt, Lamaze breathing while using the bathroom may help, heating pad will help, breathing exercises daily may help lungs (required 1st day after surgery, staying hydrated helps (drink lots of water), and LISTENING TO YOUR BODY will save your life.

I just had mine 3 weeks ago and my advice is even though u may feel awsome dont let it fool you I have been in the emergency room 2 times for hemorrhaging and 2 infections because I thought I was ok the bordum of not being able to do anything is real so just relax and do what you are instructed to do no exceptions

latrisha ferrell i agree 100% on that!! I would overdo it on the great days and suffer later on or in even more pain the next day. Thankfully my brother who has 3k movies (no joke) brought me 50 movies of choice to watch along with coloring books and word puzzles to keep me occupied. Hope your doing better!

Latrisha I'm experiencing the muscle nerves in my stomach moving around, I'm 2wks post op with my hysterectomy. Is that suppose to be happening? Haven't lifted heavy items but I laid on my side too long overnight while sleeping because I got tired of laying on my back. Feels like I strained or pulled a muscle. When I lay on my back it feels like everything is moving all around or like a ball or something. Don't know its weird. wondering is it from the insides still trying to heal. But only right in the center of my belly is where I feel most of that swelling or hardness and the muscle nerves jumping. I don't know is this part of the recovery?

I know it's been years since you uploaded this but thank you for it. In two days I undergo mine. It'll be a full hysterectomy, everything will be removed and it'll be invasive through my belly. I'm not sure what to expect in recovery but this is a good start and blessedly my hubs got a week off work for me. I'll definitely remember the stool softeners from the start. Thank you.

I had my hysterectomy two weeks ago and I didn't need help from anyone to get up and move around or take a shower except for day 1 after the surgery. I was up and moving around as if I never even had surgery after the 1st couple of days. The only issue I really had was gas and constipation but I preplanned and had gas-x and stool softener already to go before coming home from the hospital. Not everyone will have the same experience but this video will help a lot of people. Thanks for sharing.

Most definitely everyone is different. I had a total hysterectomy on 11/22. I was up walking the same evening. Very little pain. Four little incisions and not a lot of soreness at all. My uterus was 10x the normal size according to my surgeon! And fibroids were large also. I stayed overnight in the hospital and came home with Extra strength Tylenol and Ibuprofen to be taken as needed for pain. Stool softeners were given at the hospital but I have not needed any so far at home. I haven't needed any help with showers, standing or sitting or anything. I am however taking it very slow and no lifting of anything heavy. I have washed my few dishes but that's about it. I was prepared before surgery so my apartment was clean and tidy. My appetite isn't back fully but seems like I can pretty much eat normally. I'm a tv/movie fanatic so boredom isn't in my vocabulary 😃😉. So far everything has been good.
Thank God for my positive experience and his amazing Grace.

I had a total robotic hysterectomy 6 days ago and I'm feeling pretty good. I stayed overnight in the hospital and early in the morning got the urge to get up and walk. I got out of bed and the nurse was surprised at how well I got up. I prepared my personal items before my surgery which included milk of magnesia. That helped so much! I've slowed down taking some of my meds and I'm up walking around, fixing myself snacks, coffee, etc. My most painful areas are my incision sites, back muscles, and when my bladder is full or time for a BM. It hurts to sneeze, cough, laugh, sit up. Everything else feels pretty good right now!

I'm two weeks into recovery. Came home the same day after surgery not alot of pain that day. the first two days home were rough. But I'm up and moving around kinda slow but moving. Bored bored so I went on a couple shopping trips which was a bad idea, caused some bleeding but nothing to go back to the dr for. But so far so good I think, have a Dr appt in a couple days. Fingers crossed all is well and I'm on the road to recovery.

I had a robotic as well. I had everything removed, both ovaries and tubes. and cervix. I was up walked a few hours after surgery. Went home the next morning, and didn't even need pain med's No lifting for 2 weeks was the hard part and I had two 1 year old boys. My only main issue was that I needed a couple of extra weeks, actually a total of 9 weeks before anything could go into my vagina. Took me forever as it seemed for the stitches to dissolve. My the issue is dryness :(

Thank you so much for making this video! It was a big help! Because nothing was coming out of me for about 4 days, I tried to not eat much other than apple sauce, grapes, juice, etc.... watery things, things that wouldn't add a lot of bulk to my colon. I took my stool softeners and had a small enema that someone gave me that she got from her mom and it was great--it got my bowels moving again! (You can order these from Walmart: Fleet Liquid Glycerin Suppositories, 4 pack for adults, 7.5 ml each. There are others by Fleet, but this is the only one I'd recommend.)

I had my hysterectomy 3 1/2 weeks ago. I had open wound surgery so my surgeon cut approx 20 cms across my tummy and removed my uterus which was full of fibroids and 1 ovary which was covered with cysts. I have to say my recovery has gone very well. I was expecting the worst after watching all the videos. The first week was the worst in terms of pain and discomfort but I was still able to get up and around ok. I was home on my own when my husband went to work and I managed just fine. Now 3 1/2 weeks post surgery I still have swelling and a little discomfort but for the most part I feel pretty good. I only took stong pain meds for the 1st week. 2nd week I only took paracetamol and anti-inflammatories. I'm not taking any medication atm. I plan to go back to work in a couple of weeks. Definitely take something to help going to the toilet as that was probably the hardest thing to do after the surgery.

Great tips! In addition to stool softeners, doctors need to also advise prune juice or other juices that actually STIMULATE a bowel movement. Stool softeners don’t stimulate; they just soften the stool. I’m 2 weeks post op and I won’t even get an urge to go without drinking prune juice. And I’ve heard a few others say the same

I am two weeks post op, full abdominal hysterectomy. I had uterine cancer. I have radiation yet to go in vaginal canal near cuff.
I was in Wed and was blessed to leave Friday eve.
Getting staples removed was torture this Tues. My abdoninal was cut from belly button down.
Dont get too fear beaten from this. You can do dishes, etc, but no lifting thats true.
I have to give shots of blood thinner to self for 4 weeks to prevent deep vein thrombosis, basically prevent internal clotting.

I can't really take any of the good Pain meds...so I'm on (by my own choice) ibuprofen 800mg. Nothing major....it makes me really sick & I'm in enough pain...the thought of throwing up 😯 it hurts to sit to long it feels better to walk around....for about 5 mins then i have to lay back down. I've been on miralax....it has really helped. I've been in the medical filed 20 yrs but never knew ones pain...im more cautious now with my own surgery but boy...! I had constipation too and it was horrible. I tried to go to the toilet many times but the intestine simply decided to take a holiday week. After 3 weeks of suffering, I went to my gp who prescribed me injection. Wow they worked like crazy and I had to stop the same day as I started having the opposite problem. No one in hospital warned me about constipation. They actually didn't tell me anything, not even if was OK to lift stuff, or about showering. I had a horrible hospital experience and I had a panic attack which they didn't took seriously. But they discharged me without not a single paper of advice of post care. Thankfully, my sister has some nurse training I was also blessed to find in the hospital ward a woman who shared her advices and it wss her who advised me not to lift heavy stuff. I also discovered in hard way I couldn't just walk around like before. After one month I'm still in pain if I walk too much or stay too longer in a car. But I'm absolutely mad with the hospital staff who simply gave me the discharge papers containing details of what they did during surgery and to come back to remove surgical staples. They removed the surgical staples without a single word about the wound or advice I had to constantly ask and I got quick answers back so I gave up. In my case I didn't have an hysterectomy but removal of cyst and they did a laparotomy (open surgery). Finally yesterday a gynecologist explained me that Ive got stitches for each layer of muscle and other tissues and I should only walk or move as long I'm comfortable and avoid anything that cause me pain. First good advice after one month because my gp told me off for not walking enough and that's why I was constipated. I wish they could understand what is to walk with a surgical wound. Is incredibile how they leave patients without instructions or warnings about what may happen.
By the way, I had an appointment with a dietician ad was the first appointment available post covid crisis. As I know her very well, she will have told me to walk the 40 minutes like before. I spared myself another doctor advising me to walk. I used to be a great walker doing it for hours every day. Now since I can feel the pain if I go too far I just decided to ignore those people. I will try to work on my diet again, but if I get another doctor advising me to walk, run, exercise etc I will start not seeing doctors

I had a robotic hysterectomy Dec 2022. Was still given 6 weeks off work. Started to do light walking on a treadmill at 3 weeks post op. My surgeon was adamant that no heavy lifting was to be done or driving for that whole time. I walked every 2 hours around the house for clot prevention and the only pain meds I had was paracetemol (Acetemenophen for the US). Don't be coerced into doing anything too early. The rest period is just that.

Everything she said is correct and more. I went in for a hysterectomy and had to go back in because of a bowel obstruction. I spent a week in hospital. I had to have a tube put down my nose, while I was awake. I stayed positive even though there were rough times. So my hearing process took over two months. As of mid December I am currently able to get back into the swing of things. What I will say is your healing process will take longer depending on your profession. I am currently caretaker for my brother and he is no small chicken. My doctor instructed that I have someone available to assist.

Make sure if possible to buy two crutches to help u get up and in/out of bed, don't walk up/downstairs, don't stand longer than 3 minutes, try not to laugh, cough, vomit or sneeze. Drink plenty water, Keep your stitches clean, dry and sanitized, sleep sideways w/ pillow in front of your stomach, don't push when u have to use bathroom, wear loose fitting clothes. Don't wear any underwear, ask hospital for an ab belt stomach guard, don't lift anything heavy, eat light foods, turn off your phone, keep away from negative people, pray and don't have any kind of sex !!!!

I had transvaginal hysterectomy (just the uterus was removed) in 1993 because I was pre-cancerous. From what I remember, it was still about two months before I could go back to work. Stool softeners were a must because of the pain meds. I was 32 at the time. I felt like it took me a long time to get my energy back and I was told to nap twice a day. No lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk for six weeks post-op. I wish we had had the internet back then and I could have communicated with other women who have had hysterectomy. I did crewel embroidery at the time so I spent a lot of time on that. That kept me occupied. No pushing a mop, vacuum or broom. And no carrying of laundry or anything heavy. Your advice is still really good. The transvaginal approach was brand new when I had mine done.

It helps. I take a shower everyday. I had a daily bowel movement. I feel better i walk daily. Im having a good recovery. Only the smell of the cut, i visited my doctor and he gave me fucidin leo cream. He found out there are still open skin parts. Im applying 2 times a day.

I'm 5 days post op robotic hysterectomy with fallopian tube removal. I was diagnosed 4 months ago with a 10 cm fibroid. The doctor thought my quality of life would improve with having it removed. My periods were normal. They came every month like clockwork and lasted 4 days. I decided to have the hysterectomy. I wasn't going to have children so I figured... why not.
No more periods? No more urinary frequency ... cool. :)
Surgery was Monday September 14th. Apparently a robotic surgery should have taken approximately 2 hours, mine took 4 hours. The surgeon said I had endometriosis and I had adhesions to my colon and my fallopian tubes were completely blocked. The surgery was still laproscopic. I left the next day. YOU NEED SOMEONE WITH YOU AT LEAST 1 WEEK! I came off pain medications 2 days after. WEAR THE COMRESSION BELT WHEN WALKING- it helps. I'm pooping normal. Urinating well. Just feels like some regular period cramps. Nothing terrible. I don't feel much like eating, probably from discomfort taking away appetite, but NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL. WATER TOO.
I walked post OP day # 4 about 500' that was too much for me. Noticing that if I do a little bit around the house, I'm completely wiped out for hours after.
Staying inside because of COVID. I want to prevent picking up any germs or getting in any accident while recovering.
So far, so good. I wasn't sure this was the right decision, but if you trust your doctor, don't plan on having more children, have too much pain or bleeding throughout the month; this is a pretty good way to go.

Just had a total hysterectomy plus a 10 inch dermoid cyst removed at the same time so I didn’t have laparoscopic I had a full incision in my abdomen and after five days in hospital I couldn’t stand it anymore although I was in excruciating pain I made my sister take me home now I live outside of our major city and I live alone and didn’t plan on having anyone here… It was absolutely brutal this is three weeks and I’m still in so much pain and cannot do virtually anything. The doctors tell you a lot of stuff but they don’t really tell you how recovery is going to turn out I’ve had to go in twice with help from my sister and brother-in-law practically caring me into see the surgeon to get different pain meds to check the site and he said I am healing slower than most but at the same time never experienced pain like this interesting to take your view on this

I am going for surgery in a few months. I have a 30 cm simple cyst on my overy. So I will have the full incision. I live alone too. Part of me thinks it will be good to be as independent as possible so I move and dont get a deadly blood clot and the other half wonders if being alone is going to slow my recovery down. A relative can take care of me for a few weeks but it would be a 2 hour drive to get to her place. I dont even know if I can sit that long. I wish my Dr. would talk to me more.

Take this surgery seriously despite of what some videos saying you're fine after 2 days. SOME Hospital and doctors are not taking this surgery seriously like before.
I was never told to take stool softener I was constipated for 4 days straight.
I just had this done! It's insanely painful my meds norco, morphine and oxycodone wasn't helping. It's more painful than delivering my kids. Worse surgery I ever had and I had prolapsed so it had to be done. I have 4 stomach holes. Every movement I make it hurts so stay home and rest. I have family helping me. It's like being a newborn you are helpless. Yes my family see me suffering that's also hard. The surgeon cut my stomach and dissect and cut the organs and repair and sew. We are humans not frogs so If they say it doesn't hurt they must be working for the hospitals. I wish I saw this video to prepare myself for the after hysterectomy.

One thing I did was drink Budweiser budlite, then I started to keep on my own, told doctors to tell females that. I worked after I had hysterectomy, with a catheter. I wasn't given any estrogens. Was told after 3/4 months my body would get to normal. I did rely on others. You act like you were disabled. .No doctors are going to tell you that you CANT do nothing.

I had mine 5 days ago I’m up and moving around. I don’t think I would be if I wasn’t told about the gasX pills and the smooth move tea. Don’t get me wrong I had 3 c-section and this was a monster. I’m glad I was told as soon as I get to my room take the gasX. I forgot but soon as the gas in my stomach kicked in I was on those gasX like candy. It’s helped (Mercy). Now the smooth move tea got me regular quick so I’m moving more. I did sit outside on the 3 day to get some sun which made me feel better as well. I think the trick to get back to moving around is to figure out how to move around on your own. I didn’t let the nurses and family help me. I looked crazy but I took my time and slide around. Lol when I got home my husband tried to get me up stairs of course I refused his help I told him just don’t leave me. I got on all fours and elephants walked up the stairs. I asked him for his arm when I got to the top. He said I was crazy 😜. Lol. But I made it.

BOBBY D Hi Bobby D. I am diabetic too and had my hysterectomy 7 days ago (10/05/18). Usually they discharge women within 1-3 days but my blood glucose was SO high they kept me 5 days total. My best advice is to use a CGM to monitor your glucose if you can; if not, bring your glucometer to the hospital with you. It often took my nursing staff 30-45 min to come check my glucose after I asked and that is just too long to wait, especially if you’re low. Also- you know your own body! Do not let your nurse give you too much insulin. On day 2 my glucose was 307 and they gave me 12 units (bolus) which almost put me into cardiac arrest! I dropped to 37 with no symptoms except a headache... which, again is why it’s best to keep your own meter near you at all times! Good luck, I am sending positive energy your way! 🌷🌷

This information is pretty spot on! I'm 7 days post op. I think the worst as far as physical healing is the discharge. I'm bored out of my mind. Thank God for you tube and social media

Had no problems with constipation due to kale smoothies. Being vegan helped out too.

Zanne I’m vegan, but got mega constipation! The medication they gave me and anti constipation tablets did nothing😀

Thank you so much for sharing. I am scheduled for a robotic hysterectomy in August and being a Nurse I listen to patients that have experienced any procedures or surgeries' that I have to have. Bottom line is my being a Nurse goes right out of the window when I am on the other side of those side rails so I appreciate your helpful post-op tips.

I wish I had seen this before Dec 2022. I am thankful that my recovery was very easy compared to some of the comments of other people. I came back to add one tip that I just happened to luck into. I ended up buying some heavy duty period panties a year before my surgery. I got dream shorts and some high rise ones. They are both high waisted. I might’ve got a size too big but they do what I needed them to do. But they were a dream after surgery. Comfortably high enough over my belly button that nothing got irritated or ruined my steri strips or band aids. They were just the best thing during the recovery. 200/10 can recommend.
