    Your video and C-Clamp and nut idea saved me a bunch of time and sanity. I was going crazy trying to install the master link on a new chain using vice grips in the center of the plate. Only thing I did different than what you did was to slide the clip on with needle nose vice grips instead of trying to bend the clip up and over. Great video.

    Man, you're a life saver!
    I lost my chain tool and was outside in 4°c, in the dark, trying for about 2 hours to get the top plate pressed on, with various pliers, vice grips and even a clamp, but for the life of me, I couldn't get the thing all the way on..
    Using a nut like you suggested really did the trick though!!
    All it needed was a few squishes with a clamp and a nut on either side for that plate to completely press on and to allow me to get the clip to seat into the grooves.
    Nice job, my friend!
    I wish I could buy you a coffee or a beer haha

    Two things: 1) vice grips work just as well and are faster than the c-clamp for pressing the nut (plus, most riders carry a small pair in their toolbag for trailside fixes)). 2) the master-link clip should not be "bent" or pried over the pin as you show at 2:38 - the clip is designed to be pushed on from left-to right (given how you are showing it in the video). You'll notice the clip's end has chamfered ends (cut at about 45 degrees) - when pushed left-to-right toward the master link pin, the clip will "open" up and slide right over the pin.

      This 1 is stiff as f cant bend it or slide it on

    • @scotttaggart
      @scotttaggart 2 года назад +3

      @@jaayjr2516 Then the outer plate is not pressed in far enough. The clips will ALWAYS slide on relatively easy (with a pair of pliers pressing on the directional edge).

      Vise grips did not work on brand new chain and master link. C-clamp and nut worked like a charm. My new go to method.

    • @RyanFaeScotland
      @RyanFaeScotland Год назад

      @@scotttaggart Just fitted mine last night using the technique in the video and I gotta admit, "bending" the clip over the rivet felt wrong as hell, like I might actually be compromising its structural integrity by doing so. However, I think most of us here can tell simply by looking at the clip that it is meant to be slid on, the problem we have (and hence we're online looking for answers) is that we can't see how to slide it on whilst also keeping the plates pressed far enough to allow it to do so.
      Won't your vice grips just get in the way of the sliding as well?

    • @scotttaggart
      @scotttaggart Год назад

      @@RyanFaeScotland No, the vice grips push the clip in a controlled fashion while it's already in the grove. The way to get the plate properly "compressed" enough for the clip to slide on easily is to take a 1/4" nut or equivalent and compress the plate onto the link (do it on each pin separately and evenly and perhaps 2 times per pin to work in on evenly)). The hole in the nut will let the master link's pins "poke" through. Once you've "pressed" the plate onto the link with the not/vice-grip press, the plate will stay in place due to a friction fit and the clip and easily be slid into the grooves. I'm putting a new chain on my bike tomorrow. I'll post a video if I remember. It's really not that hard and is the right way to do it.

    Good tip bro. Saved me some bucks and took some worry away. I just bought a used bike that needs a chain and half the internet is freaking out like if you use a chain with a clip it will rip your leg off, bust open your engine block, and club a baby seal lol. There are some suggestions online about gluing the clip on with adhesives or safety wiring but that seems overkill. I would think if a clip type was so dangerous they wouldn't be making them for my bike.

    • @JimKirchner
      @JimKirchner  3 года назад

      Baby seal ha! Peeps are afraid of too many things. I like to stick with what works and keep it simple. Like I said, I've used clips for over 40 years on many bikes and never had a clip come off. Why the name "which god of thousands means nothing?"

    Jim Kirchner, thanks for doing the video. Anyhow very glad that you mentioned how long you have used these type master links and that you used on your R1 sportbike! I had some concerns using this type of master link over the press type, for my project sportbike. ALWAYS my biggest fear on a sportbike has been the chain coming apart or jamming up while flying down the freeway. With your testimonial, it eased my mind over my concerns. Thanks again

    I think just sliding the clip over from lead to trail instead of lifting it up over is safer. So it clips in both sides at once. Use needle nose pliers. The nut is the winner here tho! Thank u sir!

      Would have to test if that works. The nut and C clamp are squeezing the link so the clip can slip on. If you remove the C clamp and nut it might not allow the clip to go back on. The grooves in the pins might get buried back in the link. That's my theory at least. Going to try it soon I need a chain.

  • @eggbertfarnsworth5787

    I've always installed the link clip by sliding it on, but it isn't working for my new 520 chain. The clip, even though started with the open end tips in the slot, keep expanding and not coming back when I force it to slide with pliers. Frustrating as every video I've seen uses the slide method and looks as easy as it should be. But it's not working for me. So... I'm going to try your method at 5:20 and hope it works. One way or another, T-Y for posting.
