Thank you! So many nice tips here. That's the difference between experience and reading instructions. I tried this for the first time today, using the same tools, and I noticed the pins were pushing out a bit on the inside of the chain, for the very reasons you explain here. Fortunately I stopped and came to search. Reversing the plate is exactly what I need to do. "You don't pry anything unless you have to." How many problems could be avoided if that adage was adhered to.
Being a bit of an old schooler, I thought I might have a pro go thru the process before installing my new oring chain. I struggled a bit on the last oring chain a few years back. Watched the video and got a chain press and did it precisely as Slavens described. I did not give a "like" after watching since I felt mr. Slavens was treating the viewers like we were stupid when he stated "...make sure you remove the tool when your done..." So, like a complete idiot I give my wheel a good spin to admire my handy work upon completion and...Crunch!! The tool hammers into my freshly fabricated custom fabricated chain defense mechanism. I narrowly avoided a disaster. So I'm back to give a "like". The world is full of stupid people...
I've never done this before. Spent about 30 minutes trying to coax that clip on with a flat head screwdriver. The pliers on the pin worked the first time. I feel like an idiot.
Very helpful, thank you! I stumbled upon this trying to figure out if there was a trick to getting the master link back on or if I'm just WAY weaker than the general public...tool ordered :)
Do your self a favor and get the motion pro master link press. Best thing ever for master links. Pres off, press on. No juggling a bunch of plates and screws.

Yep. As per Jeff's video. if you have it going the other way, there is the chance that it could come off during riding if it catches. Less of a chance with this the closed end leading towards the chain direction.
You can just use some pliers to sit the plate in place or you can get a mate with a piece of wood to hold it on the other side and hit it with a small socket that fits over the pins

After I chased the clip around the garage 10 times, pinched my fingers, lost an o-ring and bent the plate, this worked well for me .
Pro tip wrap a rag over the clip for removal so it only flys into the rag 🤣🤣🤣🤣
i was just about ready to get the welder and tack the bastard together. cheers
Nice job explaining a very simple task. I too, have seen so many people do this wrong.

it works just as good with a flat head screwdriver
Thank you for explaining it properly. Saved me a headache with my fz6 😆
great video, really helpful. Ive always had belts or shaft drive so chains are new to me.
Great video as usual. Clear and simple!! Thx

Glad it helped!
thank you for the video. i had no idea of the press fit type clip. thought they were all loose.
I have one like this also, more work getting it on and off, I’ll probably change to the loose kind.
thanks a bunch for this, really helpful video!

Helped me out, thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you so much, great video
use adjustable pliers instead of that special press tool.
I prefer the correct tool although hacks often work.
thanks for the video
good tips
nice
Amen!
I crunch mine with channel locks
Idk what to do. There is no space to put the master link back on this chain I just bought.
Sorry, not much I can do to help via You Tube. You need local help.
No space? Wrong master link or too short of a chain?
what tool did you use to secure the plate?
Not sure what you are referring to that is not in the video.
It didn't help me at all because I couldn't see everything you were doing
is it just me, or is there no sound?
+Roger Michaud (CrankShade) Sound works on this end.
+Jeff Slavens strange, all other videos are playing normally.
What’s the website to buy these tools ?
There is a link directly above your question.
does it matter in wat direction you put the clip
Yep. As per Jeff's video. if you have it going the other way, there is the chance that it could come off during riding if it catches. Less of a chance with this the closed end leading towards the chain direction.
Open end to the rear, always. Have had half dozen guys stranded by doing it the other way.
Is this a 530 O ring chain?
520 o ring. 530 is physically taller
The guy at the dirtbike place didn't say anything about a special tool. Ffs
brent s one pair adjustable jaw pliers, one set needle nose, 1 flat head screwdriver. No special tools needed.
