I had fond, distant memories of loving this show. After binge watching this series, I realized how dumb I was as a teenager to not see the very clear character flaws of Zack Morris.

That was the whole point of the show. He's a teenager getting in and out of trouble learning lessons along the way. Does anybody remember Dennis the menace? Same thing, he makes mistakes and everything gets fixed by the end of the episode. This whole series seems pointless, does he expect every show to be like Barney the purple dinosaur where everybody always gets along and sings about how much they love each other at the end of each episode?

Ring! Ring! Ring! Hence the purpose of this series. SBTB was a show for 'tweens that aired on Saturday mornings. Usually, the protagonist is a paragon of virtue in these type of kiddie shows, while everyone else around him, particularly the antagonist, have the flaws. But Zack was beyond virtuous and was often the antagonist yet he was marketed as a role model. I was the target audience at the time and remember it quite well. The creators weren't outright telling us "Zack is good!" or "Be more like Zack!" But SBTB was packaged and sold as a wholesome show with wholesome-looking Zack Morris smiling broadly on posters and on the covers of novelizations and other related merchandise.
You could have just shown a picture of his face and I at least would have been convinced without any further arguments.

I always thought Zack Morris was human garbage; A lot of episodes, he outright said he was entitled to this behaviour because of his looks, or his status if they were going with things like him being a star in x sport. And he never grew up, he was still acting like this in that college spin-off.
I was a huge SBTB fan, but strangely I never watched THE COLLEGE YEARS. I suppose because by then I was in 8th grade and had outgrown it. Anyway, I gather that Zack was probably worse in TCY, because that one actually aired on prime time, whereas SBTB was a Saturday morning kiddie show.

Saved By The Bell is actually dark, it’s described as a “lighthearted show” but really it’s like a drama.
This was the first episode of SBTB I saw as a kid, I was hooked afterwards.
I just thought to myself a month ago that I should do a blog ripping apart the...regrettable elements but y'all beat me to it. Since I'm back in school for the first time in years I'm kind of okay with this, cause I needed this.

If you think Zack Morris is trash, you should watch Ferris Bueller's day off.
The difference is FERRIS BUELLER was a PG-13 comedy aimed at teens/adults. SBTB was a kiddie show for tweens that aired on Saturday mornings. SBTB was very similar to those Disney/Nickelodeon sitcoms, except the main characters of those shows are paragons of virtue; Zack clearly was not.
It would have been cool if they created a sitcom where Ferris bueller and Zack morris are actually found to be distant cousins and they get into crazy schemes together. Lol

Let's review: He knows how to completely con his parents (Zack can't do that 100%), he got his very sick friend out of bed so he could go out for the day, he used his girlfriend and got her to cut school to go with them, he STOLE a Ferrari outright, he let that Ferrari into the hands of shady parking attendants who jacked up the miles on it, then causes his friend anguish so much so that he destroys the car, he committed identity fraud by pretending to be abe froman to get into a restaurant and then conned the maitre'd by pretending to be the police and threatened the maitre'd to give them a table or he would get that pretend cop he made up after him..makes his sister look bad at every chance and put her under so much stress that she was picked up by the cops, not to mention all the lies and crank calls and stunts he pulls with the students and mostly the principal, causing him to get his car towed, his clothes destroyed, have their dog attack him, etc etc and he gets the WHOLE town to believe that he has a terminal illness even getting the policeman to believe he is sick etc..hmmm. I love the ferris bueller movie so much but ferris could be zack's accomplice I could see it. He is just as bad as Zack.

I guess poor Zach never learned lol in the very beginning of season 1 Miss. Bliss (played by Hayley Mills) tells Zach "You can't take advantage of people." Then Screech asks Zach in the hallway what Miss. Bliss meant when she said he was taking advange of people and Zach replied that he used him and that he was sorry.
