      I just went to corsetry instead, not the modern steel or plastic bones uncomfortable-ness, but historical recreations that are SUPER comfortable as they are a personal fit item. My 'pretty housemaid' corset is a victorian recreation of an undergarment so flexible a 'working woman' could wear it, and it works just fine for me both at my office chair and chasing down my little one.
      I'm all for redesigns of brassieres, but also for the de-stigmatisation of corsets as breath stealing torture device instead of an well made well fit undergarment.
      Ok, I'll step off my soap box now.

Demand makes the supply: if more and more women stop wearing bra, it becomes normal again. So just do it! Don't wear that bra if you don't want, I am sure many others will follow soon.

    I remember when I was 16 I went into one of the "expensive" bra shops, told the woman I had a size 80C (Sweden), she looked at me and said "uhm.. no.. you're not". I was completely shocked and almost offended, like of course I am an 80C, she said "you're at least an E, and I think 70 or 75.." she measured and landed on 70F . So she took out some bras for me, which I tried on, NEVER had a bra fitted me better (I bought 3 that day). She explained the whole system for me, how it works with cups and that the 70, 80, 85 ect is the length around the chest (and back) and cups change depending on it.

    • @katiekat4457
      @katiekat4457 3 года назад +8

      I thought she was saying or pointing out that 1930's bra is basically the same as a 2018 bra. So why would the 1930's bra be more comfortable?? Both bra should be about the same discomfort.

    • @AmoCultumAlo
      @AmoCultumAlo 3 года назад +35

      @@katiekat4457 I also assumed she was comparing them more on a surface, design-based level rather than specifically implying that the bra of the 1930s would be more comfortable or longer lasting. However, the fabrics used at the time and the construction of the garment would likely have led to them being more supportive overall and possibly more comfortable as a result. They would have generally been made of woven, natural fibres, and so -- for the reasons she did mention here about such bras -- they would have likely been at least more supportive. I'm not sure they would have been necessarily considerably longer lasting, however, as the original poster indicated, since the fabric would still stretch over time, but woven fabrics -- especially when cut and stitched together appropriately -- certainly do stretch less than the already stretchier, often non-woven fabrics used in modern bras. So they likely would have lasted somewhat longer at least.
      Plus, since corset making techniques were still in living memory (i.e., with it having been a more mass-produced rather than more niche garment only a decade or so before), they likely would have used more of those clever techniques in the actual construction of the garment, which would have resulted in being able to shape and structure the garment via the way the fabric pieces were cut and how they were then stitched together. Not having studied this extensively, however, I can't be sure of that supposition, but it's fun to consider! Anyway, apologies for the long comment, but it was an interesting topic to discuss. So I hope you don't mind too much!

In fact, a lot of manufactures don't even make a size that comes close, so I just have to accept whatever is available, pay whatever it costs, and deal with it not fitting right (and it never does). Bras should be a more standard size, and they should be more accessible to anyone regardless of economic status. You shouldn't need a professional and large sums of money to get the right bra size. I think that's one of the main points of the entire Ted Talk. This is far too complicated and has been for far too long.

      @@fairywingsonroses but that’s my point. If you are properly fitted, get a really good solid foundation bra of superior quality, and take good care of it, they can last more than a year. It takes effort. You have to hand wash, use the right soaps, lay to dry, etc. I have never Not been able to fit a woman, no matter what size she wears. Never. There was always a manufacturer that had a bra in her size. Perhaps not the frill or bells or whistles that she was hoping for. But most women just wanted to be comfortable, out of pain, look good, feel good, improve posture, improve clothing size, and just for the first time see what is was like to have a bra that made them have confidence in themselves. Mainline retail companies will not make these. There is no profit. They will just do the standard sizes and that’s it. When I worked in big retail, I had to fit woman that I had no bras for. So I tried to send them to specialty store for their own good. Needless to say that didn’t go over wth management well. But I cared about the women I saw, and I hated selling them things I knew were wrong for them. What kept me there, was when I could make a difference. Seeing someone properly fitted, and it making a difference in their self esteem was always a joy to me. I’m long retired, but I miss it everyday. Good luck to you😌

Of course I do understand and can sympathize with the ladies with larger boobs who may well feel more comfortable wearing one. What I'm trying to say here is do what is comfortable for you,rather than follow what is expected of you. I was kind of waiting for her to propose a new type of bra design since she goes into how old the current bra structure is. But something being old doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing, women wore corsets (not tight-lacing) regularly for hundreds of years because they were so supportive and conformed to your body after long-term use. The guides on how a bra should fit were helpful but not really anything new, you can really get the same advice from any store that has a bra-fitting service. I get that this was for a general audience, but I wish she went a lot more into depth about how we can make bras better.

She had fitting rooms, and doctors would send her customers that needed quality, personalized fittings. I started wearing a bra ( fit to me by her) when I was 11. Playing jump rope, running, hurt. There wasn't much there but it needed support. I don't like the feeling of skin on skin, so I wouldn't not be comfortable without a bra. BUT, new ones every year, at $40 or more!! As a woman with overly large Tatas , 36GG, I can attest to the ridiculousness of trying to find the perfect fit. I have a drawer full of over 25 bras that I've worn once because after wearing them for 3 hours of so I finally know how they REALLY feel, because my body tells me. Headache, backache, can't breathe, shoulder pain you name it. There should be a library of bras, where we can "borrow" them for a few days to try, before buy. I was also the smallest bust size in my family until my mum and sis got reductions. My 25 year old daughter just got hers done. She went from a 28HH to an A - and loves it. Next year I'm getting mine done. At 57, I've had enough of constant back ache.

      Marek Dluzniak All kidding aside, Jara van Berkel commented that “this is what happens when men design a women’s product”. And I agree. However, By starting online companies with Bras designed by women for women, Bras are now being designed that are changing everything. Companies like Adore me etc. However, many of the great women owned bra companies are being put out of business by Chinese imitators who are paying people to make bad comments about the US women’s made products, and phony good comments about the poor quality imitations for sale on Amazon. The same is happening to every innovative product sold on Amazon, Chinese or Korean imitators with unbelievably high 5 Star ratings on Amazon: Tip. Be sure to read and give more credence to few bad (1 out of 5 stars) comments on the products that have real high ratings. And research the owners and designers behind the bras, are they indeed women, is the company in an non Asian area? I recently watched a video on Amazon Prime how Chinese imitators are killing the original companies started by hard working women, using computer generated, as well as paid good reviews for their products, and paid bad reviews for competitors products.

      Gravity will get you whether you wear a bra or not because gravity doesn't disappear when you put on a bra. Your bra supports from the bottom up, but does nothing for the mass of flesh sitting on top pressing down onto the bottom. If you have a big bowl of refrigerator dough, the bowl supports the dough from the bottom. But the weight of the dough pressing down on itself will collapse the dough from the top down.

      In Western nations, women have as much, if not more, freedom than men. In a professional setting, men are usually expected to wear suits and ties. Women can wear suits and ties if they want, but they generally can wear dresses, blouses, high heels, earrings, makeup, and the like. In addition, women usually have more options when it comes to hairstyles; women can have short, medium, or long hair. In a professional environment, men generally have to keep their hair short.

      What kind and brand do you use?

    • @therealpoppinfresh
      @therealpoppinfresh 3 года назад +24

      Okay! So to start, I thoroughly recommend doing more research than just this post.
      I bought mine on Corset Story. They are cheaply made and I don't really recommend them because it's hard to get the fit right from a mass-manufactured corset. If you have the money, try to buy one custom-fit from an independent seller on Etsy or a personal website. Corset Story will try to get you in with a 4 for 1 deal, but that's not really helpful if only one (sort of) fits you. One is enough when it comes to corsets.
      Other Info:
      1. ALWAYS wear something underneath it to prevent chafing. A camisole works fine. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are best because they breathe. This also protects the corset from you because you should NEVER wash the corset. If you send it through the machine it will be ruined. Spray it with vodka if you must.
      2. This was more of a wardrobe change than I expected. Your typical skinny jeans are not going to fit over them comfortably. I switched to more high-waisted pants and skirts with more room in the hips to accommodate the bulk of the corset.
      3. Corsets (or "stays" for anything pre-1850s or so) come in a lot of different shapes. To get a good idea of what options you have, look into 18th century stays, Regency stays, 1860s corsets, and Edwardian S-Bend corsets. In general, the more you learn about the historical side of corsets, the more they'll make sense.
      4. Do research on how to "season" a corset. Like leather shoes, they will form to your body over time, but it has to be done gradually. Don't lace up your corset all the way the first time you wear it or you might damage the boning.

      @@jeanneclark99 The only things I would say against Redthreaded is that they are not particularly accessible to the average person, price-wise. I'm sure the quality is worth what they're asking, but $400+ is out of most people's price range for a supportive garment.
      Also they are frequently low in stock/out of stock/not accepting orders. So your chances of getting one are pretty slim.

    RE: womens clothing sizes..years ago a company decided to try an experiment they relabeled their clothes ..size 8 became size 6 ...size 4 became size 2 etc...it was only the label that was changed..this info was not told to the women..the company's business skyrocketed ...women could say they were a size 6 now instead of a size 8..did not matter that the new size 6 was a size 8 dress..
    This cannot happen if they actually used a measurement system like mens pants, shirts etc..
    This experiment convinced women's clothing company to stick to the "size" system instead of using measurements..

    • @l.c.8475
      @l.c.8475 4 года назад +1

      They actually use solid measurements though, her explanation of brasize is wrong.
      The way it actually works is underbust measurement=bandsize and bust-underbust is the amount of letters you need to count up to get your cupsize, 30 underbust and 36 bust makes you a 30F, 34 underbust and 36 bust makes you a 34B, adding inches creates negative sizes, which is not how bras work
      what doesn't make sense is retailers insisting on an outdated method to measure people and refusing to expand their sizerange,
      there are a bunch of women who need 24-30 bandsizes, yet most retailers start at 32,
      a G cup is a meduim size in most bandsizes, yet it's almost impossible to find,
      the avarage is skewed by the amount of people cramming themselves into matrix sizing

    As a very well endowed woman, I gotta say that NOT wearing a bra can be more painful than wearing a bad one. That said, I found a brand of bra that does all the good things (lift, separate, not a minimiser), and almost makes me feel that I don't have 4kgs sitting on my chest.
    It's a store brand from 'Big W' (Australia) - Avella Balconette.
    Normally I would buy a size 20 E - but the Avella 24DD fits me best. I have them in several colours. They last about 6-12 months - then the underwire breaks.

      John Gayton Marek Dluzniak All kidding aside, Jara van Berkel commented that “this is what happens when men design a women’s product”.

    Bras would last for many years if they were made with: 1) non-elastic “wings” (sides), the way they used to and 2) replaceable or renewable back-straps. These would have hooks at both ends, like bra extenders. It’s the ellastic that wears out. PS: If washed in or with an ultrasonic cleaner, less damage will occur from heat and tumbling.

    as some one who works in the intimate apparel industry and have done so for over 30 years as a fitter, buyer and private label product developer I have seen the industry go from offering approximately 15 sizes to over 250!! - and i can list 500 intimates stores in the USA which carry well over 100 in stock every day. Shoes also come in 2 dimensions ,length and width and bras come in band and cup so not so strange . Her slide of showing Underwire vs soft cup was VERY flawed- she showed a lace low plunge vs a full coverage non wire . Also NO ONE has ever told you that all A cups are the same and all B cups are the same- we get it wrong because we don't want to know...........we have so many WSJ and NYT reporters complaining about it and never doing the work to meet the brands ( the latest was about Polish brands coming to save us). They quote a blogger and speak to 3 girlfriends and move on . As for the band size - it is in inches in the USA and I have seen this in bra production fittings so am not sure where she got the Victorian shirt size comment and bras from better brands start in bands 28. the 4-5 inches added to the tape measure for under the bust is such an old assumption that went out the window when the USA started importing brands from the UK ( a leader in fuller cups) France, Germany and Belgium ( RIgby and Peller ladies) And cup sizes now come from A to P!! and third love's idea of half cup sizes was tried 30 years ago by the Olga brand and sister sizing is used by cheaper brands- upscale brands create molds and measure for 2-3 sister sizes and not more and as for the too large a band and too small a cup.... that is something so basic that EVERY fitter will tell you is THE issue- name your city ladies and i will find you a store. she is ignoring the invention of fabrics, Lycra and I didn't see one slide with a solution.. shame because was excited to hear it

      Thank you, the bit about Victorian shirt sizes bothered me, because brasizing changed in the 70s, so why would they derive their sizes from Victorian sizes?
      And underwires do redistribute weight and therefore offer support, if they're sitting in the right place that is, in a well fitting bra you can easily test this by pressing the wire towards you with one finger, if you to that somewhere else you'll feel a pointy force which is quite uncomfortable, but the wire distributes that force along it's length taking off the pressure from that single point.
      Of course illfitting bras are awful, but don't blame that on bras, blame that on the brands refusing to fit correctly, because it would hurt their bottom line, since they would have to expand their sizerange (cough... Victorias secret)
