  • This is my last day here around Chiawa at the border with the famous Lower Zambezi National Park. But it's also my last day with Franco and Camilla, the Italian overlanders. This morning, Franco has an idea after observing Rafiki's gear and equipment for hours. He wants to install a plug outside the cab so I won't have to squeeze the extension cable through the passenger's door anymore. This means that I should be able to easily plug my fridge and devices safely - and without leaving the door slightly open. But while France and I were busy working on Rafiki, someone wanted to come over and say hi... Someone I would have never ever expected at this time of the day! A hippo! A young hippo (probably a teenager) is busy grazing around us just a few meters away from Rafiki and me! It's insane. Hippos is the second dealiest species for humans -after the mosquito here, in Africa. Hippos don't eat meat and so don't eat humans, but they are extremely territorial. This means that if you come into their water territory, you're dead my friend. They will kill you instantly. But hippos are not territorial on land and I can confirm this 100% today. I could stand, sit, and lay down a few meters away only from our wild animal visitor. I was feeling very safe, I didn't even think about safety issues at all to be honest. A magical moment and one of the most unforgettable of the solo expedition in Africa! The next day, I had to say goodbye to my Italians and to hit the road towards Lusaka, the capital of Zambia...

Excellent filming of the hippo - you would never take unnecessary risks, but the Adrenalin must have been flowing in your blood while the hippo visited you!!!😮😬👏👏👏
Your Italian friends are just the best people👍👏
Thank you for letting the camera continue to run as you drove along the road🙏 It is so fascinating to get your driver's eye view 👏👏👍👍👏👍

Charlene, 👩🌹Wow amazing pics of the hippo,🦛 glad you did not do a selfie with the hippo. Tourist in Yellowstone take selfies with Big Bull Buffalos,🐂 Bull Elk🦌 and Bears🐻 and some die. At times tourist are not to smart, wild animal should not be mess with. Love your drone shots, 🚁Glad Franco made some good improvements to Rafiki. Enjoy your freedom. Love the channel. 💓 Stay safe and happy exploring Africa. Cheers 🍕🍕🤠

Now you know why herd animals roll in the dirt-to get rid of a few things including smell or body odor. Even birds take a sand bath! Humans have many parts that help produce body waste, thus, without constant attention, hyenas would look more neat than humans. All to say that while some of that is expected on travel like the one here, that maybe why there are also giant rivers: to indulge the tattered body and free it from the toxic-like smell😁

A lot of people have said just what you said - that you felt safe with metres away. I have known people who have naively said that about hippos and other wild animals and been killed by a hippo and other wild animals. They can change in a second. Don’t be a fool and die as a result. You are a lovely person and I don’t want that. Remember, I have a lot of knowledge and immense experience in the wild of Southern Africa.

Hi, I hope you don’t mind me saying this: I was raised South Africa - Born and bred. I served in the army in the Angolan bush and have spent a lot of my life in the bush. . Trust me, be very careful around Hippo. They are wonderful animals but besides malaria, they are the biggest killer in Africa. They are very aggressive and change in a moment, even thou they look so cute. You need to be in your car or tent when
they are around. No such thing as a tame Hippo. Someone in SA had one as a “pet” (I hate people keeping wild animals as pets. They need to stay in the wild) and the Hippo “pet” eventually killed him! Have a good trip.

Hippos (or Hippopotamuses) can be dangerous animals, especially when they feel threatened or are defending their territories. They are responsible for a significant number of human deaths and injuries in Africa each year. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, it is believed that hippos account for around 500 deaths annually in Africa.
Although hippos may appear slow and sluggish on land, they are surprisingly fast in water. They can sprint up to 30 km/h (19 mph) in short bursts and are excellent swimmers. Their size and powerful jaws make them formidable.
While hippos are responsible for a considerable number of fatalities, they are not the biggest overall killers in Africa. Other factors like diseases, insects, snakes, and other large predatory animals (such as crocodiles and big cats) contribute to higher mortality rates.
Hippos are predominantly herbivorous and typically graze during the night. They spend most of their time in water to keep cool and protect their sensitive skin from the sun. However, they can come onto land to forage or defend their territory. It is vital to be cautious around hippos, especially near bodies of water, as they can be unpredictable and aggressive.
In summary, hippos can be dangerous, especially when provoked or near their aquatic territories. They are responsible for a significant number of deaths in Africa each year, but they are not the biggest overall killers. It's important to exercise caution and respect their space when encountering them in the wild.
