From the article "End of the Road" by Brad Tyer, Jan. 13, 1997: "[In 1997] Jeanene Van Zandt produced Around Townes, a CD of Van Zandt songs sung by Jonnell Moser that was aimed at re-introducing her ex-husband's songs to a wider audience. In the finer notes to that album, writing to Van Zandt, Jeanene remembered "waking one morning to find your writing pad on the coffee table. You were still asleep so I felt safe sneaking a peek. As I read the words to what later became 'A Song For,' I was brought to tears. Hell, I was bawling. It was so tragically beautiful. You came running from the bedroom and asked, "What's wrong babe?" I said Townes, this new song is so beautiful. It's bound to be my favorite. You replied. 'Song my ass, that's a suicide note.'"
I value singer/songwriters above all other forms of music. It seems like one of the most pure forms of expression. What makes Townes so unique to me is his ability to bare his heart and soul and vulnerability to his audience/listeners with no regard for himself. He was an incredibly brave person.
Masterpiece of American Folk Writing. Townes could tear your heart out and crush it. He only ever gives back half back but, despite being a bit harder it comes home fuller and stronger than the whole heart he took.
I love Townes, but, where do you get off? You can call yourself a "professional musician". I don't care about you calling yourself a professional. I can pick up a guitar and pluck strings just like you and I guarantee you I'm a better all around musician than you. Just fuck off. I can tell I'd never like your blue haired ass I real life.
obviously, there are exceptions. the state of mainstream country music today is nauseating. but there are underground artists that have the soul it takes to play. townes can't be beat, though. and nobody worth the energy to listen to would want to in the first place.
@@paulsavage5057 You must be joking. A lot of people still haven't heard of him. If his songs and poetry didn't touch people, no one would give a damn if he was dead or alive.
@@robertphillips2769 his personal lament was "why am I not as popular as Dylan?" My listening ratio of TVZ to Dylan is 100:1, honestly. Just because I keep coming back.
the timing has to be just right if the person doesn't know. With Townes, you kinda gotta kick them while they're down. Then they'll get it so hard they can go much lower without feeling despair. That was his gift.
@Ryan A. Porter I can picture him having said that. But I don't believe he'd meant it an absolute, literal way. Much the same as when he was asked why all his songs were said and he gave his famous witty reply. I can imagine there was a wry smile and a sense of ironic indignation about it.

Can't describe how much this man's music has meant to me as a human and a musician. Pure poetic perfection
Those words cut deep , long live the greatest song writer
He’s dead.

There's blue and there's true blue.
Speaking as a professional musician, this is the real deal...the so-called "modern country" is pantie waist compared to this greatness...

This is unreal. Amazing.
My song, Im a true rambler and I dont have a steady home. Maybe some day I find peace.
Doesn't get any better than this. Period.
GODDAMN
Townes most saddest song He couldnt believe it when he 'out wrote' 'Nothing',
How do you know? If he lived no body would recognize his name. This culture just worships the dead.
He mentions it on the live album 'Down Home and Abroad'

Did anyone else hear a glass smash at 00:17 ?
I heard it too, sometimes it's just too good a take to let go of despite a small thing like that
Probably a live recording.
It was guy Clark dropping a glass of orange juice and vodka

Yep
Apparently Townes told his last wife that this song was a suicide note
No, Townes had written the lyrics down on a napkin and his wife thought it was a suicide note.
