Here I sit 23 years old in Durant Oklahoma as a centreal Texas native whos in love with Austin tx and the area smoking a joint appreciating this masterpiece. God bless
Man, the late Townes songs just hits you differently. Where he's barely singing anymore, just talking over his guitar, cutting deep with the lyrics
What a wordsmith. Story telling legend.
Why am I listening to this in the morning?... Pure blues music...
Nobody can plumb the depths quite like Townes Van Zandt.
Damn…. 2:50-3:00
Track has me crying for real
Amazing
And everything else can literally just Fuck Off! This man was on a different level!
Wonderful
329k views and 12 years tells me all i need 2 know about how much people know about music now days its sad
\m/
Um, does anyone else get sexual assault vibes from this?
What a wonderful song. There's no-one quite like Townes.
‘Marie’ is a perfect flipside for this.
That is an aged voice for a man who died in his early 50s.
Fuck the bottle
My theme song
🇺🇦☮️✌🏽
beautiful. real.
If I would have known townes I would have told him about Jesus. 🥲
His true legacy is in his words! "Poetry in Harmony" "Passion is From the Pain, & the Pain is From the Passion" "Peace Takes Practice" Rick
Anybody know where and when this was recorded? Sounds like an older Townes on a good night. I'd say early 90s
@@SantanaDS thanks! 🙂
Lyrics: The old woman finally caught me Sneakin' 'round her cave Her hair looked just like barbwire, boys And her smile just like the grave She asked me could I stay awhile I said I'd better go She slid her arm around my neck And sweetly whispered no It's cold and dark and lonely here As soon enough you'll see I'm oh so glad you stumbled in I've been cravin' company I cannot stay too long you know I left some friends at home Don't you fret about your friends Down here we're all alone What about my mother I can't just leave her there to mourn You don't have to think about her Just forget you were ever born I'll disappoint my father You know he worked so hard for me If you have to pay your father back Just send him some misery I'll miss, I said, a girl I know I can't just leave there to pine She's still got plenty of men to go I'm sure she'll do just fine What about my little boy She said, he's just like you Let a few short years roll by He'll end up down here too Then her pale green eyes began to glow She placed her hand on mine She smiled and said don't worry You'll get used to me in time As her cold tongue flickered toward I spun myself around Made a dive for the passageway But the walls come crashing down Now her eyes were the only light My fevered brain could see But I tore myself away from them And fell down to my knees I've come too far, I can't get back I beseeched the Gods of men Fame and fortune just laughed at me Then silence once again A whisper deep within Embrace the God of Love I lifted my face and through the tears I saw light fall from above I hurled myself into the wall I ripped and clawed my way Through the stinkin', clingin' loam Back to the light of day I crawled out into the wind again The sky upon my face I heard the earth sigh patiently As it slid back into place Now I'm back among the ones I love I'm loved by them in turn And it's only on the darkest night That green eyed memory burns So walk my friends, in the light of day Don't go sneakin' 'round no holes There just might be something down there Wants to gobble up your soul Townes Van Zandt
It is a lightnin’ hopkins song
As an ex-heroin addict discovering this just now, my mind is blown. Everything about this song is amazing.
Stay on top of your Recovery! Whatever it takes, do it. Be advised, be careful who you associate with and what songs you sing...you need the Lord Jesus's help (Romans 16:16).
Give Sam Stone by John Prine a listen if you haven't already, that chorus, as simple as it is just hits hard. Hope you're staying on top of things still my man!
The older you get, the harder this hits. Townes knew...
I'm a 33 year old man from New zealand, Im a metal head, slam, death, black, my father died as I turned 21, Steve earle will always be in my heart thanks to my father, I wish I could show/listen to townes with him, I feel like I am with him with this music, RIP STEPHEN KINSELLA WALKER.. RIP Townes Van Zandt
Just thanks,a lifetime
one of the most goosebumpy songs ever created
Second only to Marty Robbins' "The Chair."
“Through the stinkin', clingin' loam Back to the light of day I crawled out into the wind again The sky upon my face I heard the earth sigh patiently As it slid back into place” F***ing unreal writing in this song, no words for how good this is
TVZ makes many other songwriters look cheap and shallow
So true!
Best description about addiction, I think.
He came in hard with the fingerpicking talent on this one.
This one is played with flat pick.
💔

I just had a hole punched through my guts, and I'm not even halfway through this song yet... Wow. Just... Wow
<< what about my little boy? she said: he's just like you... let a few short years roll by, he'll end up down here too>> As the son of a suicided dad... that hits hard. I love Van Zandt.
@@SantanaDS pretty good, actually. Thanks for asking. How about you?
This song is so eerie. Townes has so many incredible songs, its crazy.
A tortured soul. Injustice done to him as a child. Brilliance shone through. I wish I knew this troubadour.
Honestly I would usually agree about the crowd being heard I'm tht recording being annoying, but I like the organic and pumped reaction Townes gave people. I'm sure he was a powerhouse to be seen during his prime.
Wow. Just... Wow
this is like a religious experience
From the article "End of the Road" by Brad Tyer, Jan. 13, 1997: "[In 1997] Jeanene Van Zandt produced Around Townes, a CD of Van Zandt songs sung by Jonnell Moser that was aimed at re-introducing her ex-husband's songs to a wider audience. In the finer notes to that album, writing to Van Zandt, Jeanene remembered "waking one morning to find your writing pad on the coffee table. You were still asleep so I felt safe sneaking a peek. As I read the words to what later became 'A Song For,' I was brought to tears. Hell, I was bawling. It was so tragically beautiful. You came running from the bedroom and asked, "What's wrong babe?" I said Townes, this new song is so beautiful. It's bound to be my favorite. You replied. 'Song my ass, that's a suicide note.'"
Knew it.
"আমার হৃদয় ভেঙে টুকরো করে ছড়িয়ে দেব তারায় তারায়"
He was a humble man with such great talent, as friendly as can be, and very generous with his time. I met him once here in San Antonio when he was playing a local bar. My wife and I talked to him during a break, it's something I'll always remember.

Masterpiece of American Folk Writing. Townes could tear your heart out and crush it. He only ever gives back half back but, despite being a bit harder it comes home fuller and stronger than the whole heart he took.
Every song of his a poem whispered across hopeless rural landscapes. His voice as authoritative like a doomsday preacher.
I have only just discovered his music , I just can't explain what I am feeling right now .........
The emotions Townes’ music and poetry evolve can’t be put into words
Doesn't get any better than this. Period.
