I love that you have a normal car that anyone my age would have who actually worked for their car and insurance feel proud to drive my 1.2 polo i got for £800 now
Haha I'm glad you like it! I will get something else in the future but will probably still keep the Polo as it's been such a key factor in the RUclips channel - you should definitely feel proud of your polo!
Good list, one other low cost handling upgrade on VAG cars from this era is an uprated rear anti roll bar. Not necessary to change the front if on a budget and shouldn’t set you back more than £100. It will get rid of the ease to understeer and keep the car nicely balanced and flat through corners 👍
Yeah agreed - I'm hopefully gunna get one on the Polo at the same time as replacing the bushes with poly ones, should hopefully drastically upgrade the handling!
I actually love this channel, it's not big fancy cars it's your own that you take great pride in, once I turn 17 I hope i'll have as much pride in my car as you do.
Appreciate it! Glad you like the channel - my only advice is to get something that you can actually enjoy as a first car - power/speed/looks should all come secondary to out and out enjoyment; I absolutely adored my first car (Skoda Fabia estate) and was devastated when it had to be scrapped, I could have gone for something faster or better but that car did the first car role perfectly!
Cars With JB speaking of Fabias, I actually got a really good quote on a mk1 vRS which I have been thinking about for months. And I think at the end of the year I will have saved up enough to buy and insure it.
Definitely tyres and then coilovers. I prefer going with coilovers rather than lowering springs because the shock that comes with the coilover is more suited for the adjustment and sometimes you get the option of changing the damping as well so you can have a car that is low, looks good, handles extremely well and still feels like the og shock/spring setup. Great video bud, looking forward to more of these 👌
Yeah that's fair enough - I was gunna go for coilovers all the way until I spotted these springs and dampers going cheap! I'm a stickler for quality with this kinda stuff so was a little bit scared of the cheap coilover horror stories, probably unfair but whatever 🤙🏽
My E46 had Falcon tyres when I bought it and it was all over the place, especially in the rain. Upgraded all corners and the car was so much better. Still corners like yaucht compared to my other cars though. Haha Really enjoy your "pointless polo vids". Remember modifying my first car; a ford fiesta finesse MK3. Pretty pointless for sure, but had lots of fun and valuable lessons learnt. 👍
Haha that's crazy - it honestly makes such a difference having a good set of rubbers on the car! Ah I imagine that was a bunch of fun to work on, glad you like the PPP videos, it's been a lot of fun to work on for me too!
Don't knock your car for not noticing how low it is. It looks a lot nicer for that slight difference! Also as you said, good tyres are a must!! They're all that connect you to the ground, and allow you to accelerate/brake/turn. Best modification you could do to a car Topic: Main modification, me: just always aiming to improve your driving, no matter the car you drive will bring massive improvements I'd love the Recaro buckets instead of my normal Clio seats, but the Clio has a airbag in the seat which makes it annoying to change, and the Recaros that were provided are getting harder to find :(
Haha cheers my dude - I do agree! It's much nicer with the 30mm drop 🤙🏽 honestly cannot be stressed enough, tyres mean so much to the performance it's insane. Definitely, and improving your driving is probably the most fun too! Ah yes the recaros that came with the RS are super nice too, I saw an RS on sale with them a little while ago, and it brought such an additional premium to the car
Great list man, looking at all of these upgrades myself currently! Just went from the stock 14" alloys to some 16" with wider and lower profile tyres and it has COMPLETELY changed the car from a washy boat into something that feels confident and direct. Next is probably 35mm lowering springs and hopefully Polo GTI seats if they ever pop up for sale. Maybe eventually I'll be as fast as Penny 😉
Ah yes the 14-16 jump with new tyres is really good, definitely made the most difference for me! Good luck with the drop - maybe the additional 5mm will be enough to destroy Penny in the corners 🤷🏽♂️
Yes jb feels a long time since a video. Yea deffinatley tyres for me not only for better handling if that's what your going for but the safety aspect is phenomenal I comparison to cheap tyres.
Apologies for the lack of video last week - I literally just didn't like the vid once I'd made it! Agreed - they've made the biggest impact on my car for sure, and the braking too has been improved which is always a safety benefit
Loving this series, just got new tyres for my 2006 corsa and that made a big difference, really considering getting a polo for my next car just from this series alone ahha. Keep up the good work man
Very very good video. Definitely keep this up. Quite liking the Project Polo now especially if you can keep the costs to a minimum. This is the sort of video the youth just passing their tests can really relate too and they really do make up the majority of the RUclips audience (though must admit it does seem that all of those younger people love to have more power in their cars and done very cheaply). Curious to see what you are going to do next on the Polo. Maybe some weight reduction techniques, upgraded ICE, power gains guide? Keep up the fantastic content.
Glad you like it! Just trying to give numerous types of video a go to see what works and what doesn't 🤙🏽 yeah that's kinda the benefit of continuing the PPP; my top 5 videos tend to grab an audience of 25-45yos with all the info etc, while the PPP grabs the younger demographic a bit better! I reckon once I'm ready it'll be the engine, hopefully a swap but the job is massive - I have plans to buy a new car but it's so dependent on different factors so I'm not holding my breath, but if I get one then it'll free up the Polo to be pushed through 🤙🏽
Haha cheers as always my dude - I would expect no other suggestion! I'm working out my savings etc with my new job then gunna reallocate cash to the polo and see which mods get purchased 🤷🏽♂️
How do you do this ?? I’ve got a 9n Mk4 2004 the car only came with a single key it’s got central locking but you have to manually put the key in to lock and unlock both doors what can I do ??
The issue with wider tyres is more fuel consumption. I took my VW Up for its first servicing the other day and asked about new wheels. I wanted to go the route that you went with wider tyres and new wheels (black alloys similar to your 9N), but my mechanic recommended against it. I can't say how accurate his words were so take them with a grain of salt, but he claimed that even with their calibration system confirming the new wheels and tyres are properly calibrated, the car will feel and drive differently and may not be what I was hoping for, and certainly not what the car was designed for. As a novice I thought that was a fair comment. So if I am to replace the wheels, I'd try and find genuine VW UP alloys on the used market since the calibration will be exact. One of the UP generations did have a nice set of OEM wheels with rounded triangular spokes. They were very tidy.
Toyo proxies t1rs feel bad on my Ep3 type r on the B roads as the side walls are too soft for any car heavier than yours I wouldn’t recommend them. Great video 👍
5 mods I'd most like, 2 of which I'm making very soon: front left tyre, front right tyre, rear left tyre, rear right tyre and a new air freshener. Not sure these count as cheap mods when the tyres are £190 each, but whatever. They're not even that big. Shame though, that there's no way to make the car smaller- I've been driving through 2 metre width restrictions a lot and the car is 2.1m wide so I have to take the lorry lane...
That's annoying - £190 per tyre?! They'd better be some unreal bits of rubber! Haha that's a real shame, I do like a big car but it shouldn't be forced to take the wide lane on restrictions!
They're just Premium Contact 6s in a 235/18/45. Nothing crazy, altho looks like they're down to £150 now. Can't complain though, I save the money on not repairing it (£103 repairs since 2013!). Of course it will break now though.
Need new seats in the fox as i have the same problem you had... I'm literally holding onto the steering wheel for dear life when cornering 😂. Getting new tyres on payday and coilovers sometime in the summer, the wheel arch gap is horrid.. i can fit my whole fist beetween it even with the monteals alloys on and it rolls around everywhere.
Haha it's honestly one of the best mods I've ever done - helped so much with the feel of the car and the confidence in corners etc 🤙🏽 sounds like a good list, make sure you get those seats in soon though!
@@CarsWithJB last mod I did to the car was a back box delete it sounds ace, it pops and crackles when you let off the peddle.. Should do the same to Penny
Hey JB, thank you for making these videos! Really love how you've transformed the car. I'm actually interested in a Polo 1.4 or 1.2, and would like to know if the car is good for highways, uphills, and average costs per month. And, how to make it look more stylish/manly :)
Yeah tbh I barely spend anything per month on my Polo in terms of maintenance, it's one of the lucky ones in terms of not burning through oil, and it gets good mpg generally! Overall it's a very solid car to live with that's for certain. Glad you like the videos!
My 2009 peugeot 207 1.4 hdi corners like a house fly since i put some wider alloys and lower pofile tyres has stiff suspension from factory and im not lowering my car because of speed humps and pot holes near my house thats why im getting a 2007 freelander 2 next year
The newer auto transmission are becoming more responsive and shifting faster. My Toyota avalon and every other car ive owned transmission do that annoying hesitation and down shift way to low so when you're just trying to pick up a little speed wind up over reving and letting off and the transmission gets confused for a second and make you feel awkward.
Appreciate it man! Cool to hear you've got one too - the alloys were an incredible Christmas present from my parents actually so I'm not certain as my dad gets trade prices on things (car mechanic) but I think I saw them online for around £350 🤙🏽
Heyy! I have a question regarding your beautiful Polo. Is it any fun to drive this 1.2 55hp 3 -cyl and how does it perform? My dad said he had an experience of driving it and said that it is bad when it comes to the engine's "culture" i.e the way it shakes etc at low rpms and of course performance (but this car wasn't created for high speeds so I don't really care about the speed). Is it easy to work with? I am thinking of getting polo 9n like yours but in either 1.4 TDI or 1.4 petrol but 1.2 gets me a much cheaper insurance. Also do you think there would be a big enough difference between 55hp 1.2 and 64hp 1.2? I would love to hear from you and as always, great video!
Very good question - immediately I'll tell you that the 1.2 64hp does actually have a significant amount more power than the 54hp one - I had the 64hp 1.2 in my Skoda and it definitely had a bit more to it at lower revs etc. Important to note though that a bunch more coils went with my Skoda's engine than my polo's, but it's a common issue on both. Regarding the 'culture', your dad isn't wrong, the car likes to kangaroo in first gear, and the engine does shake a little when idling, it almost seems like the engine has a little bit of room to move around in the bay. Modding potential for the 1.2 is very low as the engine and transmission can't cope with too much power - but I think that's probably fair to say with most engines up to the 1.6 petrol (that you'll never find in the UK) and the 1.8T/1.9TDI - but obviously they'll likely have worse insurance! A shop called Brent Tyres sorted me out for the set out of goodwill as they know my dad - I was very lucky to get them for a cheap price, normally you'd pay a little more for them!
Bro, all I want is for my car to be able to turn into a parking space!!! The shit turns sooo baad! HOW DO I FIX IT!!! I’ll turn the wheel all the way but the tires only move like 20 degrees.
Sounds like there's actually something wrong with your steering wheel. You might want to have a mechanic look into that before you do any mods. Do you have to use a lot of strength to turn the wheel as well?
@@AnimeFan9833 yeah, i had a talk with my mechanic and he told me that installing spacers behind the tires can give me some more angle, but he hasn’t taken a look at the car yet, so i guess we’ll see.

Yoo bro, I’ve got a polo 9n too so I’m in the same boat. Did you declare any of these mods?? 🤥
Yeah doesn't really affect the insurance - at least if you shop around!
Could add poly bush kit they can make a big difference
Did you say lower the car by 3cm or 30cm mate
he said 300cm
3 meters actually - no it was 3cm/30mm 🤙🏽
