Hey beginners or people who don't know how a car engine works but want to know how said engine works: this is essential watching. Very well explained!!
When you add the larger intercooler, look into increasing the size of your stock radiator. Bringing down the temp of coolant in your vehicle is as important as the temp of your air charge.
I have a 2008 Dodge Ram Hemi. The first things I did for it was, a full Magnaflow exhaust and a K&N Intake, not only did it improve my power but it improved my gas mileage.

This will make you faster than anything you can bolt onto a car. 2) Better tires. I highly recommend Michelin 4S....especially if there is a "star spec" model for your car. If you dont think this more important than more power, youre probably a drag racer. 4) A tuneup: all fluids, filters, plugs and any suspension bushings. 5) A suspension that actually works for your street car vs a track car. They are different and believe me, you dont want a super stiff race suspension on a street car (I've done this. Learn from my mistake!). And lower doesnt always equate to better handling. Know this. 6) Cold air intake 7) Exhaust 8) Forged rims 9) Stickers that make you think that others think you made a race car out of whatever you're driving.
All wrong !!!eccept cold air intake !!! You need a wing , body kit (keep unpainted), halo head lamps, fart can , plasti dip your stock rims lime green or light blue , these MODS will add at least 300 hp $$$$
Some people (like me) take off a lot of intake ducting for their cold air intake. However, most of the time you'll find that a lot of intake tuning has been done by engineers to improve resonances and flow velocity to your throttle body. This will result in a smoother power band which might be more benificial than simply getting a little bit colder air.
Exactly right. I wouldn't mess with intake piping until extra boost or replacement cams take your flow requirements outside the capability of the OEM intake. Very few cold air systems actually work because they are often based on guesswork and assumptions not science and testing.
I always laugh my guts out when I see the local ricer kids with huge "cold air intake" on their pride and joy. Then they end up in my workshop to correct "some" issues. Might not be so useless to say that temps here can go down to -25°C (-13F) quite easily. Are you REALLY sure you need a "COLD air intake" LOL :-) On the other hand they contribute for a steady flow of income. So let then mess as much as they can. ;-)

But for people who only buy cool rimz for their cars, a cheap muffler and stickers they should leave the intake alone
You forgot to mention flushing the blinker fluid every year, especially on used vehicles. Over time the pressure release valves will gunk up, causing engine damage and possibly engine failure. After changing your blinker and 710 fluid, you will immediately increase the longevity of your vehicle, and gain a possible 20-50 horsepower. Horsepower varies depending on engine size and toaster. If its a quad intake, usually they run around 30-50 horsepower.

C J Great truck CJ. Congrats. Wish I had one. If you happen to have the 300/6 it WILL actually/literally live forever, with proper maintenance. (or so I've heard. 😊)
That's because it depends on the car and the setup. Example, a Borla exhaust give say 10HP on Toyota but the same style exhaust designed for a Nissan may be higher or lower. Ssme token, a different brand will give different numbers than the Borla.
DigitalYojimbo that depends on the car you have if you have a mini that shit could make good power with exhaust and chip tune. Subarus are known for getting 50whp by just using e85 the 335i could make 420 with a chip tune and exhaust
Ik this is a video about mods but your demonstration of the engine in motion with a real engine really helped me understand 4 stroke theory even more Thanks alot

Very well done. Keeping it informative and on topic is something other channels struggle with. This was super helpful and felt like a 5 min video. Thanks
Hollis Page perhaps your fan clutch is engaged all the time, hence the horsepower loss. If it was working properly, there wouldnt be any difference from electric.
Normally my first mods are gasket-march proting the head and manifolds, polishing where possible, porting and polishing the throttle body, making a bigger flap for it, a thinner head gasket... and then checking the air - fuel ratio making sure that there's no knock and the mixture is good with the extra air... if I'm really invested in the project I'd put in bigger valves a nice air intake and a straight pipe exhaust... ususally that gives me good gains for not much money, since I do everything by myself.
The first mod of a modern car should be a way to flash the ECU with your own tuning data. After that, you can flash the ECU to support the air fuel requirements of the engine mods you make.
I drive a V6 mustang but it has a Ferrari logo on the inside of the lid for the gas cap I actually don’t know how it got there, it must be from a previous owner lol
i love how you go through everything, its something i wouldnt do i just see a car i like go check it out and if it works and has minimal body damage ill buy it, its fun that way
Ali Ben Ashour a true cold air intake that has simple path without many bends will be better than some stock air boxes with rubber corregated bellow elbows. intake baffles or cones in the tube and a pleated paper filter because the factory intake is an after thought . They use what room is left after they put the engine in and make it work not for performance but for cleaning the air and muffling the sound . But of course if you buy a newer car that is sporty /performance car it will have a pretty restriction less intake capable of the power it is putting down or even up to 100hp more. So buying a cheap cone filter and short ram intake kit will not gain power (hot air intake). True cold air intake that rake the air from in the fender or from another source is what we are talking about, they have their place and the stock box I had in my fox body obviously held my car back because when I got the aem it woke it up nicely. But of course it wasn't a modern car , still was a performance car of the 90s though.
Really good video. Really good explanation. My only slight nitpick would be at the end.... You MIGHT have pointed out, that, if you do a cold air intake and a catback exhaust, (just for example), and THEN take it to a Tuner, they can load in a more aggressive tune, now that you have opened things up, and the car can breathe.... The tune they could do on a stock car would help the car, yes, but the tune on a car with CAI and Catback, would be a stronger higher performing tune.... So, some of the things on the list, work TOGETHER to get your car running the way you want.... Also, if you take the stock car in, get a tune... And then later, you throw a catback on it, you really should go back and retune it.... the tuner is going to optimize the car they have sitting there. So if you're thinking about a catback, you should really do the catback, and THEN take it to the tuner...
Lolz, I'd rather go straight to the desired outcome. Some Stage 1 and Stage 2 lists involve replacing the same parts a bit more upgraded. Get the balance between power and economy that you want and go straight for it.
Patrick, I was thinking he could talk more about how different parts of the list harmonize as well, but honestly, it sounds like you and me are two peas from at least a similar pod. We have TONS to say on the subject. I even have a series on RUclips for "Port and Airflow Theory" for one of the subjects he covered. I only disagree with him on one point. Check it out. I have videos on my, "My Cold Air Intake and when I Heat Things Up", and a series on getting the most out of your spark. Come check it out.
A cold air intake is a high horse power support mod. Not a stock engine stock tune mod. Engineers put a shit ton of effort into making the best power curve and noise reduction in regards to resonance. The difference in air temp and oxygen quantity will be self tuned out by the ECU when it notices the increase air flow from intake sensors and increased oxygen with the O2 sensors. You will see a better increase in power by substituting the intake with an aftermarket set of headers or possibly an ignition upgrade (depending on the car).
THANK YOU! I'm already working on the suspension. From your list in the video, seems I just need the headers and a ECU tune then. This information was very helpful and easy to understand and it's gonna make my decision making moving forward a bit more confident. Thanks again!

That's because it depends on the car and the setup. Example, a Borla exhaust give say 10HP on Toyota but the same style exhaust designed for a Nissan may be higher or lower. Ssme token, a different brand will give different numbers than the Borla.
Naw just put them on and watch the magic unfolds
Got it,
Cold air intake
High performance intake manifold
Performance headers
Cat delete
Straight pipes
Performance camshaft
And ecu tune
Best bang for buck probably chip tune and cat delete.
DigitalYojimbo that depends on the car you have if you have a mini that shit could make good power with exhaust and chip tune. Subarus are known for getting 50whp by just using e85 the 335i could make 420 with a chip tune and exhaust
Alex Villalobos
335i don't make 420hp with stock turbos get your facts right
Rey Perez yeah they don't make 420 lol they make 480rwhp and about 540tq but for sure not safe
Depends on the car. Best starting place for a NA engine would be exhaust, but with a turbo engine would be ECU tuning of boost and fuel.
Ik this is a video about mods but your demonstration of the engine in motion with a real engine really helped me understand 4 stroke theory even more Thanks alot
The amount you blink makes me uncomfortable.
ThomasFrick Yes just read this comment and can't stop laughing while watching now... Ahhah
Chyme same hahahaha
There were some double blinks in there too even Lol
ThomasFrick Yes super drunk 😂
it's called dry eyes combined with the bright light. Happens to me too, especially since I have contacts
Ok seriously you're so smooth and efficient at explaining mechanics that I feel like you taught me everything I need to know about engines just from 3:42 - 4:15
Thank you
Vtec is the only mod i need
Your wife preferred a cadillac with 26" rims
Vtec is from them Chinese. We don't need that in America. "I can't drive you!! Go back to your country! Amen!"
Roderick Treadaway you was dropped as child right
Roderick Treadaway Japan* 😂, get out of here, you haven't a clue what you're talking about.
Ummmmm. I guess you guys don't know who Clayton Bigby is then? I think y'all were dropped on your heads lmao
Very well done. Keeping it informative and on topic is something other channels struggle with. This was super helpful and felt like a 5 min video. Thanks
Be surprised the gain you get replacing the mechanical fan with an electric.
Hollis Page perhaps your fan clutch is engaged all the time, hence the horsepower loss. If it was working properly, there wouldnt be any difference from electric.
1. Tornado air intake
2. DTM style wing
3. Mugen sticker
4. Carbon fiber veneer shift knob
5. Tow hook
6. 3M secures ventiports
7. Bazooka style muffler only. (Don’t do catback or headers because you’ll lose back pressure)
Injen CAI
Throttle body coolant bypass
RRE catless shorty headers
Injen 3" catback
94 octane tune
280whp/254ft.lbs 😎
Man from Nantucket what car u running
Normally my first mods are gasket-march proting the head and manifolds, polishing where possible, porting and polishing the throttle body, making a bigger flap for it, a thinner head gasket... and then checking the air - fuel ratio making sure that there's no knock and the mixture is good with the extra air... if I'm really invested in the project I'd put in bigger valves a nice air intake and a straight pipe exhaust... ususally that gives me good gains for not much money, since I do everything by myself.
Do stickers add horsepower?
yes
you need atleast 5
Especially when they refer to actual products, which work, which are in your vehicle...sorry, I can't keep a straight face! LOL.
Yes totally
Yes. 1hp per small sticker. 5hp for a big one. 100hp if you can't tell what colour the car is
The first mod of a modern car should be a way to flash the ECU with your own tuning data.
After that, you can flash the ECU to support the air fuel requirements of the engine mods you make.
Everyone knows if you paint Flames on the side of the vehicle it makes it go faster
Dude thanks so much for explaining these concepts in layman’s terms.
If I had a dollar for every single time you blinked, I'd probably make about a couple grand on this video.
Your super thorough with explaining in simple terms and very informative!!
I always appreciate your videos! Thank you
Yes... Deeper!
ok, bend over
By far my favorite car guru. I'll watch his videos even if they have nothing to do with what I am looking for
I drive a V6 mustang but it has a Ferrari logo on the inside of the lid for the gas cap
I actually don’t know how it got there, it must be from a previous owner lol
guess the previous owner got confused and thought it was a ferrari maranello
That's because it's a Ferrari in a V6 Mustang body kit.
bet that give you a 10hp boost 😂
Does your mustang have vtec tho 😂
Great video man..some video are too long and didnt even tell what we came for..unlike ur vid..its not too long and straight to the point..subbed :)
Top mod, TYRES!.
i love how you go through everything, its something i wouldnt do i just see a car i like go check it out and if it works and has minimal body damage ill buy it, its fun that way
thats right not whiny just deeper
Yes, the ecu tune is the most important to keep the car/truck running right after such modifications.
Cold stickers are better than cold air intake
But of course it wasn't a modern car , still was a performance car of the 90s though.
a real engineer mechanic ....love his knowledge awesome !!!
3:42 could teach a non car person how an engine works in a matter of seconds
Yh he did.....I'm that non car person
Great video man! Easy to watch and very informative.
Where exactly does one go to get a tune? I imagine you can't just go to any old auto shop
You might as well just go full on stage 1, then if you want more power later, go stage 2. And so on. An ecu tune would be part of each of them.
Patrick Morrissey How much are ecu tunes?
None of these mods don't make any horsepower without a tune.
Cringe good English
actually, all of these mods don't make horsepower without a tune
Super imformative mane, A+
When you go to the comment section for actual advice but you end up becoming a meme
One does not simply, go to the comment section.
+Ratchets And Wrenches - always good videos!!! Thanks!
Take a shot every time he blinks
I just died
Best starting mods.
ECU, exhaust, and a cold air. They all work together to take more air and get rid of the exhaust faster.
underdrive pulleys and electric fans 🖒
A cold air intake is a high horse power support mod. Not a stock engine stock tune mod. Engineers put a shit ton of effort into making the best power curve and noise reduction in regards to resonance. The difference in air temp and oxygen quantity will be self tuned out by the ECU when it notices the increase air flow from intake sensors and increased oxygen with the O2 sensors.
You will see a better increase in power by substituting the intake with an aftermarket set of headers or possibly an ignition upgrade (depending on the car).
is nobody gonna talk abt how bro is stoned xddd
I want the information, I don't care how much green he lights up
Did you drug test em personally?
Thought not ya fuckin clown just shhh your mortar mouth and 🧏♂️
THANK YOU!
I'm already working on the suspension. From your list in the video, seems I just need the headers and a ECU tune then. This information was very helpful and easy to understand and it's gonna make my decision making moving forward a bit more confident. Thanks again!
Oh yeah, camshafts too
"On a supercharged engine the turbo compresses air" uhhhh
The first thing we do in Puerto Rico, is cold air intake with pvc pipe, disconnected the muffler, by pass the throttle water hose, lower the car if is fwd for better grip in the hole shot.
What good is HP and Torque if you can't pass emissions, that's the real question.
That's a great question, but they actually have aftermarket performance catalytic converters.
Imagine living in a state that tests emissions lmao
So basically, everything you listed except the cams are called full bolt on (FBO)
This video’s bullshit
Just add a V-TEC logo somewhere and a hoonigan sticker and you’re set.
Do you call yourself a mechanic??
I was trying to find video like this with somoene explains what to do and why...god bless you
