@@ReelAnglerReviews You talking the inline 5? In canyons, or colorado? I'd guess so. But compression is probably about 10:1 so not more than 20psi. Plus tuning. Ebay turbos are cheap $200 amount, and are good for 15psi all day.
Just watch out if you mean the inline 5 they have timing chain at front and rear of engine. Expensive job to replace.
Carbon build up is free compression, never clean it 😁

Depending if u have a DOHC engine cause If u do ir going to spend hella money I have a SOHC bugeye rs and I want to but making a good build on stock engine is going to be a lot more expensive than making a STI swap

Speaking personally, I have a 2008 Subaru Forester which is supposed to be the best model years and it is biggest Piece of junk I have ever owned. Calling it a turd is a insult to turds everywhere
@@yamilmelendez2667 If it's an already turbo'ed engine from the factory, say the 1st gen Legacy Turbo (EJ22T), or any of the WRX's (bug eye and blob eye in this case with the EJ205), then yes. The EJ255 and EJ257 are great engines off the show room floor and if maintained properly, but the 2.5 liter Subaru engines have the worst of the problems of Subaru engines. Ringland failures, melted pistons, spun rod bearings, melted valves, and the worst of the head gasket issues. If the 2.5 liter turbo engines are built with beefier forged internals, MLS head gaskets and head studs, then absolutely go for a bigger turbo and moe powah babey. Now, the naturally aspirated EJ25s (EJ25D, EJ251, namely) are the worst ones to NA-T build. The 2.2 (naturally aspirated and the turbo ones) and 2.0 liter engines are the best ones from the factory with much stronger internals and have the least issues, and you may even be able to successfully turbo an EJ22 motor (depending on which one it is, and if it is a frankenmotor) for less than the price of an STI swap. The EJ22 motors have the same forged crankshaft and rods as an EJ20 WRX motor, but have larger pistons due to the bigger bore. Same engine casting, just a bigger bore in the EJ22. EJ25 is the biggest bore and have a longer stroke, but that's what makes them blow head gaskets much more due to thin cylinder walls and not very much support with an open deck block.

yep ! good stuff to do ! a couple years ago i was enjoying the boosted life and one day backing down the drive way noticed some blue puffs of smoke. Shut the car down got out the compression testor noticed cyl one was barely in the 100 psi range while the other 5 were normal in the 140 range.
Got it top dead center and then started pressurizing the cyl, open the throttle, no sound, check the exhaust no sound, pop the oil cap WHOOSH. Immediately told me all the pressure is going past the rings. So now since then i've been saving up for my parts for the rebuild.
thank you for explaining the cylinder leak down test, ive always shied away from it because of all the extra steps in the instructions but your way is much easier

If anyone is doing a clt themselves: don't use metal to find tdc because it can scratch the top of the piston. We usually used straws but anything wooden or plastic is fine 👍

Been wanting to turbo my car for a long while now but given recent events with my car I’m thinking otherwise 😂
I’ve been rallying my 2018 RAV4 for 3 years now and it’s been a total blast being the only FWD at the top of the board but damn has it brought out every issue with the vehicle. First to go was the fuel pump and two months ago the alternator went. When I called Toyota about the issue the guy laughed and said I was lying about both of those going bad on a 2018.
The alternator was probably the greatest example of Toyota engineering. The pulley had completely blown off and the belt was riding on the clutch system, which kept it spinning. If it wasn’t for that and the auto tensioner my car would’ve died on a 70mph highway. If you aren’t aware Toyota decided it was a great idea to make everything electronic including the steering and brakes. No battery, no brakes. :/
I might just get myself an old Corolla hatchback and race that one so I can stop worrying about my daily going to shit.

120-130ish psi compression is definitely low. I'm surprised he was actually fine with that. I have a 1.6 1990 miata I've been getting ready for boost and it was around the same compression. I just replaced the cylinder head with one with way less miles and it bumped it to 160psi across all 4. Now I would consider it ready for low boost. Never for one second did I think 120 would be fine.

When doing a compression test you should only have to crank the engine over 5 power strokes to get full compression of any given cylinder.

Differential Compression test / Leakdown should be done at about 80psi and the other gauge should be replaced with a standard gauge. Anything below 70 on the second gauge is too low.

Zach, what happens if you turbocharge and one of your cylinder compressions is low? I'm facing this now and would like to add a turbo without an engine rebuild. Pretty sure most of the compression leak is in the cylinder, not the head.

I purposely boosted a bad engine that had Bad rings As long as you kept the boost pressure down low everything was fine if you turned it up past that it would blow engine oil everywhere Turn the boost back down and everything‘s fine I drove it for two years like that

@@Xylo_TV maybe run diagnostics on it, see if you can safely tune the turbo on your rotary that can make enough power to keep you satisfied, and not have everything break lol. From what I know, Rotaries are great engines, but very unreliable at times
