    Alright, time to fess up... For all of you who've been editing for years in Final Cut Pro and thought you knew it all... which tip in this video is new to you & you plan on using it daily? I don't think I knew about Shift + Z for, ohhhhh, maybe 5 or 6 years into editing in Final Cut Pro 😬🤦

    I am not an expert but definitely not a beginner. Knew and use all of these short cuts except for the semicolon key and quote key. I always use my mouse to jump to edit points. Never knew about this option and its way cool. Thanx So Much !!

    Been editing on FCP since it first came out. I learned that you can hit Z and draw an outline box to get that area to fill the screen. Thanks.

    Zoom: If you are using a keyboard a mouse, Option key with the scroll wheel allows you to zoom in & out with out changing tools. Great tips on navigation.

    Very useful tips. Is it possible to do a crosss-dissolve between piggy back clips on the timeline? I struggle whit that a lot.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  9 месяцев назад

      Not directly. You can add a cross dissolve to the end of one clip and the beginning of the other but it may not look the way you want it to. Why do they need to be piggy backed? Why not just put them together in a Storyline and cross-dissolve directly between them?

    Great video! I personally love to use the Magic Trackpad, pinch for zoom in and out, double tap to fit entire timeline…My personal favorite shortcut is “Z” for trim to start, “X” for blade and “C” for trim to end. And I also have the space key nearby to play or pause. So, the left hand on the keyboard with this shortcuts and the right hand with the Magic Trackpad. With this combination I have managed to reduce the vlog editing time for my main client (20 vlogs/month) from approximately 6 hours to approximately 4-5 hours for a vlog. In general, the material sent to me for each vlog is approximately 30GB-40GB, 40-60 minutes in timeline, for a final vlog of 18-22 minutes.

      Nicely done! You should look at a Stream Deck or Stream Deck Mobile - it speeds up my editing a lot. Thanks for checking out the vid and dropping a comment!

    Matthew, thanks for this great video. On my Mac, the cmd+arrow shortcut only works with text elements, not with video clips. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  9 месяцев назад

      Interesting. I just double-checked how it works in FCP for me - as soon as I hit cmd+left/right arrow it selects a clip in the Primary Storyline and then moves from clip to clip as I use the shortcut. Are you using a US Keyboard?

    • @englishwithmaria
      @englishwithmaria 9 месяцев назад

      @@matthewTobrien I've checked again and I can now see my mistake. I wasn't using the up and down arrows. If I use the four arrows, I can move from one clip to another without trouble.

    I have zoom functions set to keyboard shortcuts, E, R, and T to show the full timeline. My left hand never has to move.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  9 месяцев назад

      That’s awesome. I’ve always wanted to do more customization, but now that I’m teaching FCP I feel like I need to stick with the default shortcuts so I can more easily teach them. Luckily my Stream Deck and Monogram Console help me to streamline the more complex shortcuts that I use constantly.

    Command + 2 > Focus to (activate) the TIMELINE is IndispensibLe ||| Your thumbnail for this video > i would encourage you to use something more CINEMATIC to draw attention to an object in a scene - In his film Suspicion, would Hitchcock have used ARROWS pointing towards the glass of milk that was possibly poisoned, rather than sticking a light in the glass . . . ? Ok, its conceded this ain't no Motion Picture FiLm, but i tend not to click on videos where its perceived their viewers can't discern the topic in the thumbnail photo-Vid without pointing to it thx for your fcpx content

      I’ll have to try that one! Appreciate the feedback on thumbnails. Thinking of them like movie posters is an interesting idea… 🤔

    TIP: Double Click into the timeline to fully zoom out, which is a better alternative to SHIFT+Z
    Also: Every Shortcut shown in the video is done using the U.S. Keyboard layout. Check your own keyboard for the proper keys
