Model Railway | Summer 2021 Layout Update | Dean Park 280
Dean Park Railway modelling sees more progress this month. A NEW Cavalex product is announced, as well as a new Hornby Loco added to the model railway fleet. Hi Dave the scratch build factory is looking really good, no such thing as over engineering, its called attention to detail, as in your intro. The round window sets it off brilliantly even if it is so small, again great detailing. More great ideas for our layouts cheers Andy

Hi Dave. First of all. I am liking the work that you are doing with Dean Park and the realism is going from strength to strength and keep up the great work. As for the Hornby Class 60. This is one of the best unrivalled RTR models of the Class 60 in any scale and there is just no substitute. I have a model of 60062 but mine is the DB version. I have a total of 8 of them and they are lovely models and I think that if any company in the OO gauge field would find it very difficult to top the Hornby Class 60 model. I think all that Hornby needs to do to their Class 60 is perhaps add metal horns and metal handrails instead of plastic ones and 21 or Plux22 DCC input. Otherwise its a cracking model.
I am looking forward to getting the Cavelex Models Class 56 as they do look good and a Colas and a DCR ones are the last examples I remember seeing before coming home to Northern Ireland in 2017 and Colas did run theirs along with their 60's at the time through Barnetby. So I will be taking an EWS, Colas and a Loadhaul one for starters and its nice to see alternatives being offered for the modeller as keeps the market competitive at least in my opinion.
Finally as for the Mk3 DVT models that came this year. As much as I like Hornby and most of their models are grand in my opinion. The 2020/2021 Mk3 DVT is a complete let down and I don't get how considering on their past models how they dropped the ball big time on their occasion and allowed these two to have light leak to the point of both models lighting up like a lava lamp is just evident of the lack of quality control on their occasion and although I am happy to fit the light bleed issues with a wee coast of paint on the inside of the model. These issues should have been picked up by QC in the factory in China and the models should have NEVER been signed off at the factory. At £75 a pop, these models are NOT cheap and I will wait until I can get one cheaper and fix it myself.

Another good review. Yup, class 60 is an excellent Loco, got 4 of them, Colas, GBRF, Triple grey with the LoadHaul Emblems and DB. Got the DB last week, slight issues with coupling at one end, will look into that this week, but doesn't detract from being an excellent runner.
Great vid Dave. Very excited for the new 56 and I’ll definitely be getting one most likely in colas livery. As for the Hornby class 60 it’s definitely a very nice model. I have two class 60s currently in EWS and DB tata steel livery, Both sound fitted. Hornby did do 21pin class 60s which were the factory DCC sound models. My EWS class 60 is one of these therefore if you want a 21pin class 60 you have to get the sound version and I believe there are a few livery variations out there.
Have just watched your latest video with the my 3 dot. Just so as you know my son Chris has both models at home and doing his best to fix the roof seam marks and paint inside of the cab to stop the light bleed problem. You highlighted several other areas which I’ll let Chris know about and keep you informed of his progress
I have one of the new release DVTs in swallow and the quickest fix for the lights is fill the area with blue tack but I'll be doing some upgrades to mine in the future, the buffers, rubbing plate and valence under the buffer beam

Hi Dave, excellent and interesting update as always ... some more good progress with different projects ... also look forward to seeing the retaining wall in a future video! I’ve also pre-ordered a Cavalex 56 and seriously tempted by another (tempted to divert a Hornby large logo pre-order towards a Cavalex flavour!).
Now for the DVT .... oh my!! I took the plunge to correct/refurbish .... so did the roof and carefully painted the window frames black. Taking the model apart was a faff as one of the screws was simply turning but not releasing (the bush was spinning!) so required a bit of force to release ... after a few choice words! Taking the cab interior apart was also a faff (no instructions included). I gave the cab interior two coats of matt black, also painted the dashboard and seat (as the plastic was blue!). I also snipped and removed the interior cab light and. Reassembling was also a faff ... but actually the end result is quite pleasing and very close to the original 82123 that I also purchased when released a few years ago. Am happy with the end result .... but totally agree .... we really shouldn’t be refurbishing a brand new ‘super-detailed’ model! (We’re not in Romania in the 1980s!!) I do have some replacement buffers of the correct shape leftover from a Bratchell models DVT kit, so may fit them, also a coupling hoop of wire to allow ‘DVT drags’ ... but that’s a project for another day! Hi Dave, I have that exact class 60 the same as yours. I’ve had mine about 8 years now and the only slight issue I’ve ever had was with the couplings as they sometimes jam when they pivot which I easily fixed. I fitted legoman sound into mine and I weathered it myself. She’s one of the most powerful locos I’ve ever owned the pulling performance is incredible and I use her to haul my TEAs. Cracking model Dave as you’ve said in your video.
Hi. I’m tempted to fit one of my 60’s with sound. Yeah the coupling issue is well known, but hornby have never done anything to address it. Which is frustrating! Glad you enjoyed watching. Cheers. Dave
West Hill wagons works are producing some superbly detailed kits.
I believe that the class 60 is Hornby's best diesel loco produced so far, I have 2 a DB Schenker and Transrail and will be purchasing another at some point.

I bought one of those Trainload 60s over 10 years now. A stunning model, looks excellent hauling my rake of Accurscale ARC tipplers. It’s such a good model that I bought a second one!. 👍

Another typically brilliant video Dave, shame about the DVT, i imagine Hornby will surely want to rectify these? especially with the recent number of highly detailed locos which need the DVT in tandem, i.e. Bachmann's Class 90, Hornby's Class 87 and in time Heljan's newly tooled Class 86. I had two Class 60s, but have chopped them in for more 90s :-) ... but i do miss my Switch on to Safety 60007, I can see me getting a hold of Tug007 in the not so distant future :-)
Hi, thanks. They aren’t replacing the bodies which to my mind would be the only acceptable response. They offer a repair service which I think is too little! A replacement body or a cash back on the models sold, as it’s certainly not worth £74.99!
@@DeanPark as you said, it's really bad for them to release a below par item and still charge 75 quid for it. I know Bachmann's 90 has been far from perfect, but i seem to have got pretty lucky with my Team Red Skodas ... they should recall them and rectify it ...

It'll be interesting to see if one of the r-t-r manufacturers releases one. I'm sure there will be a kit/conversion available pretty quickly but, if GBRf and their partners can convert the real locos, surely a model manufacturer can convert an OO version.😁
Bachmsnn have secured the rights to the class 69. It was announced last month.
I know we’ve been following on Facebook ,I like you have the first release along with the one anglia ,virgin and EWS managers pack they are perfect so so sad ,if hornby listens to us great ,I have a class 43 DVT HST power car on order hope that’s going to be ok ,great video Dave ,Mark

Got two Tugs (ex Brish FC and weathered FP), after a third to renumer/name (To become a clean Saddleback- FA). Just have to check the colour grey they have used. Good strong pullers. Needs a few mins work to backdate to the 90s. Also need to file a bit of the metal by the coupling under the cab as it gets stuck on corners with a heavy load- not able to centre.
Hornby 82, I also got the original. I forget the brand but I got some valences some time back and do look the part. Still not changed the buffers- on my to-do desk (along with the Westhill fire reels). Horn grill being black is not too much of an issue unless very close up. I do find the lights don't always work- need to consider hard wiring.
Sadly Hornby have been churning out many errors recently. Their 2000s grid never appealed to me so kept my 8 others (Mainline type). Maybe they'll be replaced with Cavelex?

You're right about the ever improving 3D printed stuff - though I'm still more than happy to buy it rather than try to do it myself!
I know you're not going to change the finish now, but Paul at Galgorm Hall had success at harling using that brick red glass paper painted white on one of his scratch builds.
Yeah I have tried the glass paper.. but it’s not as durable if you paint it. Paint can rub off the glass particles if handled etc. I’ll keep experimenting. :-)
I had a class 60 from the early days of the release, it was great for the lighting options and a good runner but really didnt like 2nd radius curves as with many models and the coupler had the fowling wagons issue as i recall, i was always disapointed by the NEM couplers considering it was meant to be a much better standard, i found they would sag and catch on the track or pull wagons off

Some of the detailing on those industrial pieces is unbelievable. I would not be surprised if Hornby retool their own Class 56 or make recolours like the Class 91 situation...
They won’t retool. They’ll just flood 2022 catalogue with loads of versions. That’s what they did with the HAA hoppers upon seeing a rival had announced them.
With the price increases of 10% coming into effect their HAA will be same price as accurascale highly detailed ones! I know which I’d rather have.
I have the network rail DVT which I decided to paint the inside myself to fix the awful light bleed, however the front screws were spinning around and would not come out. This resulted in me snapping the chassis in two. Although I managed to get it looking and running well in the end it took a lot of time and patience and wish I had returned it. Not what I'd expect for such a high asking price.
That’s a nightmare! Did you email hornby to let them know of your dissatisfaction? I hope every who got on let hornby know that this product was not acceptable and that they’re slipping back into the dark old days of the 80/90’s…where they started to produce poorly finished models that were nothing better than toys! :-(

A friend was a loco driver at Knottingley TMD in that period. Apparently the Romanian versions of the class 56 actually suffered from fumes entering the cab.

Hi Dave, as you rightly point out Hornby have reputation for producing excellent models, so it is very disappointing to find a locomotive that you were keen to buy that is not up to their normal excellent standard. I've got Colas 60087 CLIC Sargent. I love it, the detail is fantastic, especially with that see through grille so you can see daylight through the actual locomotive, while it still hides the driveshaft. I've had it hauling 120 small wheelbase wagons with ease, which puts it at quite a bit more powerful than bachmann 37s which slipped with around 100. I'm tempted by a 2nd to do as GBRf's 60047 Dunbar by renumbering one, adding etched nameplates, and removing the Colas branding. Really hoping Hornby's 60095 is the right GBRf colours, unlike their 50s. I'm also after a Loadhaul one, because my uncle's desktop background has been one for many many years. Plus my local model shop has DB Cargo 60100 Midland Railway Butterley, since I also love DB red on them.
A shame about the mk3 DVT. I'm half tempted by a rake of oxford mk3as and hornby dvt in VT livery, but I'm not convinced the DVT is worth the money. Also means I'll need a VT 86/87/90 for them too. As for light bleed, I've just got myself one of the 6-wheelers in LNWR livery with lights, and there's quite a bit through the door areas. I'm hoping this gets hidden by adding some masking tape over the LEDs, since they're way too bright for oil lamps. Plus the bearings are terrible, just like the SR Van C they did a while ago.

I love the class 60 of Hornby but annoyed they still have not got the triple grey colours correct. I have re-sprayed mine to get them correct and it does make a big difference. Just completed 60033 Moel Fammau in Metals livery.

Hornby appears to be using cheaper materials of late to make their models. I bought 60100 in DB Red last September when it came out. Had to return it when I got it as it had a cracked cab. And all the horns etc were broken off. Hornby sent the retailer a replacement. Replacement one had a crack in the cab aswell ( in a different place) sent it back to Hornby directly in October and still awaiting it back! Keep chasing them to be told they are awaiting replacement bodyshells and its a massive batch that are affected. Ridiculous a company that size can’t treat their customers with some respect. A £170 loco thats mine they have had for 9 months! Been asking for the £11 postage they promised back for 9 months aswell which has been ignored!
The Hornby 67 also has a major issue. Hornby have completely ignored the fact theres a bend in the die cast chassis at one end for years. I rejected the DB Schenker one on those grounds as the grey band really showed up the gap between the chassis and the body.
I didn’t know that about the 67. That’s shocking.
Hornby can be great and then rubbish in the same day! Their service department were fantastic with me last week. Those horns came to me within 48 hours. Your story sounds like a nightmare! Be patient though…with China in the mess it’s in getting up and running post covid and the shipping issues every consent are having it’s likely everything is just backed up! Frustrating. But we live in unusual times. :-(
Hi Dave. Great video. Really disappointed in the Mk3 DVT. I was hoping to get one of the new releases as I had two of the original intercity swallow ones and I'm building up a rake of mk2fs. The only change I was hoping for was a toned down executive light grey to match the colour of their coaching stock as the original was a bit to biscuit coloured. Can't believe it is such a disaster this time.

I noticed your track in the DVT review. How do you get that “used track” look, particularly the track in front of the DVT with the brownish stain (Railmatch Sleeper Grime ?). It looks good.

Hi, yes I was going to use a 1p but felt that too mean! 😆
I use sleeper grime then vary it with some railmatch roof dirt, precision paints oil leakings and some weathered black, again from railmatch. Always use enamels. They’re far harder wearing than acrylic for ballast etc.
I do have patience when modelling, but my wife says I’m very impatient everywhere else!
I have 4 x 60's. 2 Transrail 60005, one redone as 015, 60007 as 60059 and 60006. Whilst not a fan of the real life version, I do need a variety of these for authentic block trains. I find the models a stunning representation and despite 8 pin models, I have zimo, legoman, factory sound and tts sound on the 4 and all work and sound well.
As for the DVT . . . Really wanted one. Looked at it, without illuminating it looked poor. Bpught my mates spare Virgin one instead. Less hassle!

hi dave,i have 3 class 60's,the only issue that i have had is with the couplings not returning to the centre position,i rectified this on mine by opening it up and sanding the triangle section point to a more rounded profile,since then they seem to run a lot better.apart from that i love the model,two of my models are scottish named examplesJjohn Logie Baird and Alexander Fleming,both models are now hard to find.

Aye you’re not wrong there! Lately their quality has taking a dive!…. And they’ve just announced another 10% price increase effective from 31st July
Is that in part because they are made in China - what about their quality control. Very disappointing

@@timbevan7457 I have many HO gauge Bachmann liliput models that were made in China and yes they are on the whole more expensive than Hornby but amazing quality and detail in comparison. I think it's a case of Hornby don't really care about quality more so profit as who else can you buy British outline OO gauge from apart from Bachmann ( whose OO gauge stuff unlike their HO gauge stuff seems to be bad quality and more expensive than Hornby) you are stuck with buy Hornby or don;t and end up with very little choice ☹☹☹

enjoyed the update! quick question - do model railway layouts get dusty? if so, how does one clean them? vacuum? compressed air? feather duster?
Hi. It depends where you have them I suppose. In a room in the house, most definitely they will get dusty.
My loft has no windows (a downside for letting cool air in during summer!), but less dusts/particles get in. Also no light to fade everything!
Everything will get dust, if you’re working on the layout, plaster dust, saw dust, etc.
I use a dyson attachment to vacuum the track and hard surfaces. For delicates, like locos and such I use a very soft brush that is used to clean camera lenses… so it doesn’t damage anything.
I’m not a massive fan of the class 56 or the Colas livery but I have to say from those images it looks particularly sharpe in those colours 🔥
That image is just a computer rendered image, not of the actual model. In fact all of the images are digital renders at this stage. But it certainly looks impressive.
Not a criticism at all, but shouldn't the welding tanks be maroon and black/grey? Or did the colours change in your modelling period?
Just asking as when I was a kid in the UK those are the colours I remember..

as for the Class 60, its a shame that BR did not use the Large Logo livery, that works well on the other locos such as the 37, 47, 56 and I think though not sure that the 40 may have had it for a while and possibly the 87. I remember having an old Lima class 86 N-gauge locomotive in electric blue original livery - I repainted it to large logo!

Great vid as always Dave. Althiough I model in N gauge I would be horrified to receive a product in any scale which had light bleed like the DVT. It shows to me a lack of quality control throughout the whole manufacture from design to final inspection. You are right not to accept quality like that.

Thank you for another wonderful update from Dean Park. I'm shocked by the poor quality of the Hornby DVT, mistakes can happen so will be interesting to see what Hornby do to resolve the issue. I think they should offer a replace batch of models with all problems solved. Look forward to your next update.

Yes I have the DVT, I won't be sending it back (as never had the original), but when I get the time I will sort out the window frames and the light bleed. Hornby, totally unacceptable. Hornby are not the only ones, but the manufactures must understand that their customers cannot be expected to splash out on what are substantial amounts for sub standard products.
Great presentation Dave Sad to see the poor quality of an iconic name in railway modelling However the likes of the 60 and 56 appear spot on I cannot wait for the new kids on the block to release their equivalents 👍

At £480ish with another 10% hike on hornbys prices on top of that, I wouldn’t be brave enough!

@@DeanPark 😁 You're missing an opportunity there Dave. The old 23.05 Bristol/Taunton sleeper would be an interesting one in model form. Varied coaching stock and a huge variety of weird traction on the Edinburgh portion - anything from a 20 to a Deltic.
Don't think I've ever seen a sleeper on Dean Park.😁

Such a shame about the Hornby 91, especially considering it just seemed to be a vindictive move after Cavalex announced they would release a version only for them to cancel it because of Hornby. More and more I find myself looking forward to the new releases from the smaller companies (Accursacle, Cavalex, Realtrack) rather than Hornby or Bachmann, the smaller guys are definitely putting the work into getting their models as accurate as possible and it really shows.
That said, the Hornby Class 60 is a beautiful model. So is the Class 56 as well. I'm glad Cavalex are bringing out a new version of it, but the Hornby model should be able to stand up against it
The dvt is not the class 91. It’s an earlier mk3 dvt. These ran on the west coast with mk3 stock and class 86/87/90’s

No, but they were done in batches with differences between them.

The 60 looked really good in that livery I managed to get a cheap hornby 60 from a show early last year for £70 in mainline blue 60078
In my opinion i don’t think hornby is the best manufacturer at the moment, they are making a lot of stupid decisions and the way they have treated some retailers is just unacceptable when it comes to pre ordering items, they are obviously trying to maximise their own profits and not caring about the customer, their customer service is still non existent and hornbys management are not fit for purpose, Simon Kohler being a perfect example.
Which is why I ceased buying Hornby modern image loco's (never bought any wagons off them) more than 2 years ago, they just don't cut it anymore and I've moved on from them.
Accurascale, Revolution, Cavalex and Dapol serve my needs perfectly for what I want to run today.
At least they are producing…Bachmann announce and nothing happens. 😆
I’ve got 3 of the 56’s on my radar. Two of which are railfreight grey and br blue. Love a 56 grid! :-)
@@DeanPark hornby produce items that someone else has announced, the class 91 being a very good example, bachmann take a while to produce their items but when they turn up the wait is worth it and haven’t been rushed to the market like some hornby products.
@@DeanPark yes indeed but for me Hornby are stuck in the past for tooling and features and agree in regards to Bachmann where you get 5 year waiting times (Class 90, 20) and then they only release 3 liveries and then go to sleep and leave you hanging for a few more years i.e. Class 90 and I'm sure this will be the case for the Class 20.
I've pre-ordered the Cavalex Colas 56 and will be a marriage made in heaven with my pre-ordered Revolution IWA log carriers.

@@davidstrains4910 I think Bachmann need to take a lesson from the others (Hattons, Accurascale, Revolution, Cavalex) in regards to prototypical lighting and sound setups and overall attention to detail....also lower their outrageous RRP's on their products.

Excellent video and content Dave. It's pretty sad the quality of these DVTs considering the price. The prices just seem to be going up and up. I think these companies are just trying to push their luck now.
And another 10% price increase in all hornby products (except humbrol!) from 31st July.
Who’s betting they’ve got boxes of stuff ready to go to shops now, but are holding off until 1st august to send it! 😆

Hi Dave another great video mate I do have a hornby class60 locomotive in railfreight coal livery it really is a great model I love it I use it on my mgr trains with my class20/37/56/58s locomotives I also have the first run of the hornby DYTs in intercity swallow livery I have 5 of them the lights in one of the DVTs are not working at the moment I need to fix it soon it is not good to see the new hornby models like this I have a lot of hornby locomotives I do like hornby models but they need to fix this soon I have two class87/0 electric locomotives in intercity executive livery on preorder with hornby I am hoping they will be all right when come stay safe and well mate goodbye for now clive in N.lreland
I just hope hornby have got a shock at how bad this model has been perceived and criticized. I fear for the apt and 91 etc.
@@DeanPark hi Dave I hope not Dave I have got the old HORNBY APT/P TRAIN it will be interesting to see what the new APT/P and class91 electric look like I am hoping they get the class87/0 electric locomotives in intercity executive livery right or I will not be please with hornby here hope Dave for the new models

DVT is the worst model for 2021. I fear for the APT & Class 91 sets now :( Hornby need to stop casting in the body colour or at least give it a full paint job. They make paint for christ's sake ! Shouldn't cost them that much.
Hi. It’s a disaster of a release! Utterly frustrating that they screwed it up. I too fear for the 91… if it has light bleed I’ll cry!! I’ve waited decades for a new one!
