A VERY BUSY MONTH! - read on!...
Dean Park Railway modelling sees significant progress this month and a visit from Everard Junction! Richard shows me how to weather oxford vehicles. I also cast my eye on the NEW HORNBY APT and loads more model railway content which include new running shots of new locomotives on the layout. Check out the links below for some great products, as used at Dean Park Model Railway. If you enjoy Rail transport modelling you'll like this!

Those photoreal backscenes are the best model railway invention ever.. they just add so much..
Magnificent Dave i am envious of your attention to detail and skill always enjoy your updates keep it up
Cheers Robin. It’s all down to taking your time and thinking about what you can add to a scene. That’s the bit I love the most. :-)
My two favourite model railway RUclipsrs in one video, great stuff!
Haha. Cheers.
It's 2/4 for me; I also follow 2 German modelers.
Excellent Video, it never ceases to amaze me how good you and Richard are at everything you guys do, if I even manage to get a third close to what you guys and others do I will be as they say here in Salford, "Well Chuffed". Thank you to both of you for all the videos and tips and "How too's"
Thanks Dave and Richard for the weathering tutorial more good tips as usual. I'll look forward to watching the new scenic sections grow with interest. Great video atb Andy
Great update Dave. Looking forward to seeing you develop the new area. When I used shaper sheet, I just covered it with a fairly thin plaster wash (via a paint brush). when it dried hard it was perfect for painting and scenery.
Great video from 2 of the best modellers in RUclips the night scene was outstanding
Another excellent video. Great tutorial on painting/weathering vehicles, something I'll need to do on my small fleet of vehicles.
I very much appreciated the vehicle weathering tutorial. Clear and effecive, but not too complicated. I will be trying those methods out very soon on some of my trucks and cars. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Really enjoyed watching this video, the work making the new section of the layout looks great looking forward to seeing the next update on the build, plus the vans look spot on with those weathering techniques, thanks for sharing 🙂👍🏻
Cheers. Yeah I am pretty happy with how these vans turned out. They do look more realistic. I’ll add some details to my cara in time Dave
Great Video again mate, look forward to the next one!!
Looking forward to seeing the APT up and running. Another very interesting mix of subjects. Keep up the great videos.
Cheers Jim. Glad you enjoyed that one :-)
Looking so good Dave, thanks for sharing
My pleasure
A great update Dave thanks for sharing, thanks also to Richard for the vehicle weathering piece, for me now a winter project to weather some of my vehicles. Great to see the location and plans for the new boards looking forward to watching you transform them in due course
Cheers. Yeah the tutorial will be handy. Lots of work for me to do this winter :-)
Hi Dave, thanks for sharing Richard weathering techniques. I have a small fleet of Royal mail Sherpa vans so brought a pack of (different) number plates to add a little variation to the vehicles. Thanks as always for sharing take care and please stay safe..
Great video as always Dave. Fabulous to see weathering in progress. Looks like you’re going to have a busy winter developing that new area. Watching with interest. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Cheers. Yeah there is always plenty to do!
Once again another great video. Can’t wait to see the full 14 coach APT on your layout.
Cheers. Yeah the full apt will look good (hopefully!). Cheers. Dave
@@DeanPark I might get an apt but i don't have money and its not cheap in asia either
@@TanVasinTrains Indeed - my original 5-coach set from 1983 only cost my dad (my Christmas present that year) around £50. Either inflation over the last 38 years was a lot higher than I thought or this new lot have been jacked up in price considerably, despite the manufacturing tech getting far better and cheaper in that period.
@@AndyG73um I live in asia
Great update/how to Dave!! Thanks for sharing. Cheers Onno.
Cheers.
7:25 'Old bangers' at Dean Park? Dave, I can - almost - hear you shuddering at the thought!
17:32 I remember my gran's maroon Rover had a replacement black wing after an incident! She did get it resprayed after a while. Still it did encourage her to get her cataracts sorted, bless her.
Great collaboration, great results. Very easy to follow this true masterclass.
Very exciting to see the new area beginning to come together. Happy modelling!
I know… it’s a culture shock to see them on my layout lol
Super work
As always another great update very useful
Cheers :-)
Another excellent video Dave. Dean Park & Everard Junction… modelling heaven. You’ve both inspired me to have another go at this hobby. Many Thanks
Cheers Kevin. I like to collaborate with others, it’s what the hobby is all about. Not about certain RUclips creators who just focus on themselves.
Another enjoyable video and nice to see two great model railway modellers coming together to help each other. It will be interesting to see what Hornby have to say about the capacitor and lights going out.
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed. :-)
@@DeanPark Interestingly if you watch the video of the APT running on Pete Waterman's west coast mainline layout it looked like Hornby's new APT coaches and the lights were flickering.
Two magicians i one video that’s awesome 👍👍🚙🚙
😆
My new APT coaches arrived too. I thought the same about capacitor and surprised that when lifting the coaches off they didn't stay live for a few seconds. Then again when I ordered them I didn't know they were lit so not complaining. Will probably have to do some painted figures to go in them as interior is far more visible when lit.
Nice to see 2 masters at work
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
Another excellent update Dave. I really enjoyed the car weathering tutorial, it's gave me a few good ideas. Keep up the good work 👍
Cool, aye it’s one I’ll be referring to again when doing more vehicles.
I love seeing the APT out running
Blimey got you both in the same video. Hope Richard enjoyed his visit to Scotland and it was good to see you got him working. A nice job with the weathering of the BR vehicles. Blimey that space at the end of the layout got very big with with the new raised sections, that will keep you busy for a few years. Andy
Cheers. Aye I’ll be kept busy, but you know I’m Not one for throwing it together so it’ll be done when it’s done :-) Dave
Morning Dave, sorry I'm a bit behind with my watching this week and I wanted to be able to see this update in one sitting where I could concentrates. As we've come to expect the video is very well filmed well explained and your work area is lovely and tidy. It's a privilege to be able to follow your progress and although its not my era of interest I can well see what you enjoy about it, its a time of change in the railway's of developing the APTs and other locomotives. I enjoy the time and effort put into getting the buildings and scenery right, and the weathering of all right down to the small vehicles all helps to tell a story. You've got a work of art there, and those of us who lucky enough to be able to follow you can enjoy modeling at it best. One of the highlights is seeing the short running sessions it helps to keep me informed of the overall impression of what you want to achieve. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and stories with us take care stay safe and well, Eddy xx
Hi Eddy, thanks for getting in touch with those really kind words. I’m thrilled that you enjoy watching my layout develop. It’s a real passion of mine and I love working on it when time allows. Thanks for supporting my channel by watching the videos, it’s very much appreciated. Cheers. Dave
Another excellent update. I may be half tempted with a full APT-P if/when I get a job. Also I upgraded my 2 short HST sets with the new hunt elites for mk3sd's, and they seem too short; when I have the motor car pushing the rakes, the gangways rub and derail the coaches. A bit annoying, but I'll just have to either do some mods or just swap over power cars whenever I change direction for mainline running.
Fingers crossed you get the rest of the APT.
Lovely update and plenty of good progress! Am looking forward to seeing the mammoth retaining wall project as well in a future video! The capacity within the APT is very bizarre as it doesn’t appear to give any ‘stay alive’ for a few seconds to the lights … hmmmm! Otherwise the APT delivered so far looks good … I’ve managed to resist as I never saw one in action during my youth! I do like the Hunt Elite couplings and have converted all my fixed rakes to them (apart from 2 rakes) … closer coupling + reliable including push-pull + ease of coupling and uncoupling/removing stock! 👍
I’ll get the rest of the apt just to have one to enjoy.
I’m kind of undecided about the azuma ‘celebrating Scotland’ as I don’t see myself using it much. It’s just to collect I suppose!
Hunt couplers are good, better to use than tension lock.
Great update 😀👍
Cheers Michael. :-)
That was a very good film
Accidental passing emergency vehicle outside your house added some good atmospherics to that closing night shot…
👍👍👍👍 loverly stuff
I like the APT coaches and I am glad that Hornby have combatted the QC issues on this occasion. However I second that the large capacitor should have been hidden in the restroom perhaps as it would have been out of sight. But I am optimistic about the APT model that is coming out. Also from what I have seen is that the GBRF Class 60's are now released along with the Cappagh Class 60 as well. Hope those two models are of similar quality considering the price is higher than the DB Cargo ones are selling for. A like from me and thanks for the showcase Dave.
Ash.
That general view of your layout Dave, doesn't look that far off finished, all really coming together now, really liking this also plenty of ops for a cuppa with each video ;)
Oh with the scratch building involved with buildings etc here it will take a good couple of years at least. Glad to be working on this 4th end of the layout. Lots of plans for it. Cheers. Dave
I disagree, SteveS3667, on the grounds that I don’t believe there is such a thing as a “finished model railway layout”
@@afpwebworks Yes Mike, I'll go along with that I'm sure mine will be extended changed etc etc ;)
Awesome stuff Dave :)
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it :-)
Hi Dave, have you looked closely at the TRBS coaches ? The door sliders on the side of the coaches have not been painted silver to simulate the chrome running strip ( well, not on mine anyway). The moulding is there, just not painted, so the same colour as the coach side.
Have checked with the rest of the other extra coaches & they're fine. Strangely it's both coaches on both sides so it's a complete miss during detailing.
Hopefully going to fix mine with a fine tipped silver marker as apart from that ( & the capacitor problem) like yourself, i'm really pleased & can't wait to get the 7 car unit to go with them.
Great video ( as always) the layouts looking great.
Great video Dave the APT coaches look decent, wish they did extra coaches for the original APT hornby made over 20 years ago though because I own one of those sets so unfortunately I’m stuck with a 5 car set, great update on the layout it’s coming on very well, and the vehicles look quite good.
Cheers. Yeah it’s a decent looking model. Looking forward to see the main train pack being released.
If you are after extra coaches for the original Hornby APT, check out Leadley kits. They do buffet car and trailer second. They do come unpainted though.
@@Degsie1975 I have seen his products online and I do intend to get some items off of him at some point the PoP skeletal train in OO is a very good looking piece and I would like to make that up, I may try the coaches one day and from the looks of the photos on the website he has done a great job on them.
Enjoyable update dave, we can all learn of each other , i cancelled my atp pre order after careful thinking dont think it justified the price, rather spend the money on layout stock that i can use on a regular basis, atb phil pace 👍👍
I can understand that. I have trimmed down my order too. It’s good, but it’s not great. And for the money I see why some people are disappointed.
Another great varied update, covering all elements of the hobby. Always so many more jobs to do!
Soooo many jobs done, loads more on the list. It’ll never end….thankfully. Love this hobby.
I think some of the engine sounds have quite a way to be developed yet to be convincing. They’ve come a very long way since I first heard sound from model trains in the 1980s However I think some of the Diesel engines sound too tinny to be convincing yet. That said, your layout is simply extraordinary. The attention to detail is beyond belief. The overall effect is what we in the model ship fraternity call “museum quality” ( I.e. flawless - the only thing more realistic is an actual ship ) Thank you for continuing to bring us along on your hobbying - your filmmaking is as precise and inspiring as your model building
Wow, cheers Mike. Your comment really made me smile. I’m so glad you enjoy what I do. This hobby is fantastic and I enjoy bringing it to others with my videos, so thanks for watching. I agree about the sounds, but Ive a video coming up in next few days on the Class 24 that might change your mind! :-) cheers. Dave
Nice update Dave. The Everard Junction feature on weathering road vehicles was nice to see I will be doing the same thing in the future. That Hornby APT looks really nice. Ashame about the capacitor in the way prehaps they could of hid it a little better.- Nicholas.
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Excellent and informative video as ever.
I find using a fine fountain pen nib gives a more precise application of the panel line wash, and in some cases negates the requirement to remove any excess.
PS. Don't bite your nails!!!!!
Ha, that’s Richards hand. I don’t bite mine.
I was tempted by the new APT, but I've got the old 5 car set from the early 80s and I'm going to stick with that - it even tilts. As the APT has such a smooth profile and simple livery, I didn't think modern manufacturing made a big enough improvement to warrant £400 for a new version of something I've already got. Be keen to see your big rake running at Dean Park - should be spectacular.
I was considering more than one apt. But might limit it to one now. Will see when the 7 car packs arrive.
Fit some lights and itll be great
@@fatwalletboy2 Exactly what I was thinking - and a bit of subtle weathering.
Superb, just keeps getting better and better I said to Richard at new junction it’s great younger modellers are like you and Richard and Richard at everard junction are carrying on the hobby and raising the bar even teaching us should I say more nature ones (oldies 😂😂) respect mate and all the best to you all,be nice to bump into one of you at a show one day and have a chat ,all the best ,Mark 👍🏻😊
Cheers glad you enjoyed it. Everard popped on for a day when he was up in Scotland taking a break, I was grateful he wanted to pop in to show me these techniques.
@@DeanPark nice one Dave who made the coffees hehehe and did he bring the cake ,cheers mate
Those night time shots are just stunning, Dave. Such a shame about those capacitors in the APT! What a massive oversight from Hornby. I can see a lot of people ripping them out and refitting their own exactly where you suggest at the coach ends. Can't wait to see a full length APT tearing and tilting around Dean Park (and Everard Junction, no doubt!)
Take care. Mike.
Cheers Mike. The apt is a very decent model. Maybe not a great one, which a lot of us had hoped for. But at least it’s here.
@@DeanPark Here it is indeed! After, what, thirty odd years?
Can't beat a bit of cardboard (or paper) aided design. My whole layout is currently lining paper which I roll back out of the way where required! Love the vehicle weathering tutorial. One of the things I like about Oxford diecast is the ability to dismantle them and introduce drivers/passengers. No Teslas on my layout! ;-)
Cheers. Yeah I actually enjoyed weathering the vehicles although the commer van couldn’t be dismantled, typical!
@@DeanPark Ah! I don't have one of those. I thought the Mini was the only one! ;-0
If i finally built up courage and was to put a layout together (and learn how to connect wires) I would wish it to be as good as yours. Amazing work. New subscriber!
Hi, welcome to Dean Park :-) Thanks for getting in touch and good luck with your layout. I hope you enjoy watching more from my channel. Cheers. Dave
Always envious of your carpentry skills Dave! That new raised area is going to look really good with the factory in the background. Thanks for letting me ruin some of your prized Oxford Diecast collection! They certainly look at home in the depot car park, Cheers
Thanks for popping in to show me your technique. I’m a visual Learner so watching you go to town on those vehicles has given me the ‘drive’ to do more of my vehicles. Even my Mr bean mini! Cheers.
I am not a modern Era modeller, but I have always admired your layout which I believe to be the best one on RUclips. I have a few Oxford Diecast Vehicle and I am debating whether to weather them or not. I would of liked to have seen the rear of the commer van with the re-painted door. Good luck with the rest of the build. Martin. (Thailand)
Cheers Martin. :-) I’ll be showing more of them in future videos.
your layout is very clean and neat......cleaner and neater than the real thing at any rate.....:-)......but i like it...
the "opposite" to everard junction....which i like too.....
Hi, cheers. While all the landscape and buildings are weathered, it’s neatly and accurately designed and put together . I prefer that as if you have untidy, wonky buildings, exposed ends, untidy structures it really shows up on camera and makes it look rubbish. It’s just the way I like to build I suppose. Each to their own. :-) cheers. Dave
Good 👍 😊 😌 video
The Sir Nigel Gresley train set from Hornby last year was a cardboard insert, didn't harm the model locomotive or carriages and my set came all the way to Belfast in the post. The APT is interesting and looks like Hornby have done it justice
Hi Dave anther great video mate I really injoy it every interesting I love the new hornby APT/P coaches I have two old 8
car hornby APT/P TRAIN on my layout the new coaches look a lot better than the old ones stay safe and well mate goodbye for how clive in N Ireland
Cheers Clive.
I’ve got the Have we got one the very first one that came out When Hornby First made it back in the 1980s
Brilliant video as always! Hoping a running session between you and Richard comes next! Love what you are doing and the new editions are great! Thanks for another great video Dave!
I would like to ask is there a plan to dim the lights in those coaches seen at the end using some resistors as they look really good but very bright in comparison to other locos?
Cheers. I’m glad you like it. Not sure how I can tackle the lighting issue as yet.
@@DeanPark Resistors would be my go to solution, you can get multiple different strengths and they just dim the lights down that wee bit so they don’t spill onto the track as much
Very cool progress.
But either a setting change or RUclips’s new approach jammed commercials in seemingly every 2-4 minutes there’s for a while rendering the last third almost unwatchable.
Mind you I’m not against commercials and income generated from them not something about the current state is just a disaster at least for me.
I’ll have a look. RUclips do automatically pack videos now. While the income is a bonus with hobby costs going up and up and up I don’t want it over powering the video and ruining viewing.
Great Video Dave , I think birch ply is the way to go myself but the price of timber as gone stupid its 3x the price it was 2 years ago , I would not like to start building a large layout today .
Exactly… materials (at the moment at least) are just silly prices. £60 a sheet of birch ply.
I saw the APT coaches today and thought they looked OK. The capacitor looks bad when they are lit on your video but I also saw a train on Pete Watermans layout and normal viewing I did not notice it was there so may not be too bad. What puzzles me is why it is thee if it does not keep the lights on. I have a set on order and will have to wait for that to see if I can find out what it does. Really like the van weathering tutorial, I have seen Richard working on stock before but this was better with both of you.
Hi, yeah I’ll wait and see what the apt looks like. I do like the coaches but the capacitor is silly. And it doesn’t seem to do anything to keep the lights on. I think it’s more of a ‘smoothing’ capacitor. But lights should stay on a little longer in my opinion. Glad you liked the vehicle feature. It’s good that channels collaborate in a positive way and not just try to discredit each other like I’ve had some fool try to do.
@@DeanPark Yes its good to work together I watch another person who has done some live streams with his daughter which worked well. As you did a live stream yourself it could be another thing you could do along with Richard one day
@@DeanPark I hope you have ordered the 5 car set David. I have been to my local shop and found the 7 car set has been put back to the end of next year. The 5 car set I ordered may be in by Christmas. I got the power car and have had 3 coach packs put away for me. Hornby sent out one short so no TU came. They sent out the extra coaches for next years release as well which seems bizarre to me. You need 4 chips as well.
interesting tutorial on vehicles, where was the tamiya wash obtained from, a search online auction site, just showed dealers abroad ,thanks
Great video
I've got an APT set on order from Hornby.
I have to say that I'm a little bit disappointed with what I've seen of it so far.
The seating and the big capacitor spoil the model
Like you say there doesn't seem to be a power reserve for dirty track and things like points Like on other coaches.
I have some Hornby mk1s from a few years ago that was fitted with lights and they stay on for a good few seconds with no power
That's what the capacitor should do .
Yeah the lights are a bit Of a let down for many. Struggling to work out my they’ve used that capacitor!
Thanks for the update, Dave. That capacitor in the APT coach looks dreadful: is it in all the wagons? As it doesn't seem to do anything, I wonder if it's even connected, or even if you've been sent a second hand coach that somebody's tried to fit a capacitor to.
Good on Hornby for moving to the cardboard packaging.
Lol, I can assure you they are new. All coaches are like this. Hornby have since explained the use of the capacitor. Which is too long winded to bore you with.
On this era of super detail the capacitor is a bit of a let down to some. I know I can’t see it whe. It’s viewed from normal angles, but to have it on show I’ll have to limit track level views!
I've seen plenty of damaged vehicles back in the day at maintenance where by workers sometimes rolled the van to a stop using walls etc they were pretty beat up!!..defo would be a step further if you could dent a few of the models to make it look though it's been hit by tools or the brakes weren't working the best or someone forgot to throw the handbrake seen it happen many a time and your left with dents in bonnet and back doors side doors got a good beating from time to time aswell??
Im thinking the capacitors might need longer time on the track to be able to hold some charge in em. If they are new will they not have juice ?
Don’t think it matters if they are new. They should charge within seconds.
I can't see any beer or wiskey ... or did you edit these scenes out ? 😀
those vans at ruclips.net/video/Ltp4_Mm4vhA/видео.html could they be coupled with chains rather than HUNT magnets or tension locks??? you can get model ship anchor chain around the size that you need to go from the modelled hooks...
or would they not support the weight of the trains?
You may be interested to know Dave, my chosen drink is Milk!
Is the capacitor working, it doesn’t seem like it is
New taxation on plastic packaging for products coming into the UK is possibly why they’ve gone for formed card.
Good for the environment, so I ain’t complaining. Perhaps not suitable for a heavy loco, but good for coaches.
That visible capacitor is a real let down, other than that the Hornby APT could be the beginning of the “Super Detail” era renaissance.
Hornby have done a decent job here. But I still think Bachmann and accurascale are leaving them behind.
But Ben, it isn’t super detailed? The detail on the outside below floor level is 1980s standard. It looks like a toy.
Can i ask as I have no experience of it, how do you remove the liquid mask?
I rubbed a cotton bud over it, or you can use a cocktail stick to try peel it off.
Thought id come and see your thoughts on the APT.
I had a close look at the coaches and extra powercar today and have since decided that i probably wont be buying one now.
Was massively dissapointed.
Feels cheap and nasty to me, i took it apart and plenty of room for that capacitor under the floor ect.
Just so many iffy bits that make it a bit meh. Seems like a 2000’s era model rather than 2021 tbh.
Hornby needs to bring manufacturing back to the UK. I'm more than happy with my c1980s APT, i take any UK Hornby over made in China trash.
Will you be happy with the price increase?
I wanted to see you guys fight on camera
I'm not sure about the Hornby APT, looks like a toy rather than a model and that underframe detail let's it down in my opinion as well as that badly positioned capacitor.
The APT is a very simple looking train. Hornby have captured the shape very well. But a lot of people are focusing on the capacitor and are disappointed.
The capacitor really is a schoolboy design error very disappointing. The interior detail sadly also looks very basic and crude with the tables red etc.
Yes there are a few areas that have been simplified to reduce costs…which is a shame as it could have been the ultimate Apt!
Whilst i like your reviews, you should have waited till you had an APT to use this pack with.
It’s not a full review as such. I’ve just given you a peak at it. I’ll be doing a full review of the 7 car pack when it does arrive. If I’d waited I’d have to have covered all 14 cars in one video, which would be a very long video.cheers.
