New Layout Build - Water effects for the canal and detailing the office building

  • Taken a while to put this one together. In this video I use lots of small details to add some interest to the bottom of the canal. Then add some woodland scenics realistic water using modge podge for the water effects on top.
    Finish off with a look at the office building I've been working on. Still more work to be done on that but I'm pleased with the results so far. I've been wanting to progress with that building for some time.

    Model making is a deceptive hobby. You start making a model of one thing (in your case railway, in my case a model ship) and you end up having to know a lot about all sorts of other things - what kind of cars they had in that time, what buildings typically looked like, what offices were like, how much graffiti looks realistic, phone boxes, road markings, what stuff is in a junk yard. There's a never-ending range of detail you need to know about to make a convincing model. And sir, you have the knowhow and talent to make a VERY convincing model. Congratulations. It looks almost finished. Only a couple more decades to go!

    This is amazing.
    Most period railway layouts are nostalgia pieces of idealised childhoods being better than now. Yours is of proper late 80's grot of detritus in the street and offices with busted blinds.
    It's glorious.

      @@philnkerry I remember in the late 80's the council decided to resurface a quarter of my town and road planed it down to concrete, dug out the kerbs etc.
      Then the thatcher gov decided to break up the council district into several to gain as many seat because the area was part tory part post coal mining wasteland. That meant my new council didn't have the money so that's the way it stayed for two and a bit years.

    Dave, I CRY every time you do scenic work on your layout !!! I might suggest to you and other doing water work that before one starts pouring that a very light wood sealer is coated on the bottom of the wood so leaks don't happen.
    This river scene is great, but I would think have a low light in the tunnel since it seems to be a public passageway and thus the city would have a light in it,( yes I know you said why you didn't ).
    In any case YOUR WORKMANSHIP is WONDERFUL, well done SIR !!!!!

    For your night scenes, you might benefit from some soft orange glowing backlights - my overriding memories of London nights in the 80's and 90's was that ever present purple night sky from the orange glow of the sodium lamps.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj 3 года назад +4

      Those sodium lamps were a burglar's friend. Just enough light for them to see by, not enough for CCTV or even quite close up naked eye to give legally useful images. We had that advice from local very experienced police in east end of London

There always seems to be a disaster of some magnitude when a resin pour is done. Lol. The canal and all its details, as dismal as they are, is wonderful. The Insurance building with it’s ground floor green grocery and electronics store is wonderful with all it’s amazing details. The light banks you created are well worth the effort. Such a great detail. One thing……. Whomever is paying for that billboard advertising autos, ( located between the canal and the street,) is getting ripped off. Lol. This section of your layout is magnificent. Thanks for your efforts. Take care. See ya next time.

It's the kind of thing you'd see if looking out of your office at , say, 5:30pm in mid-winter before just when you're winding down and getting ready to go home. Watching this layout grow and evolve over these past years has been an awesome journey, the canal sediment detail makes even more sense with the time period the layout is set in. During the 80s the canals had reached the peak of neglect, commercial use had been gone for decades and the recreational/habitation renaissance that saw many improvements and renovations wasn't a widespread thing yet.

I know it is such hard and tedious work at times, but the best part (for me) was the scratch built ceiling light fixture design to make it look like old fluorescent screen lights one still sees everywhere (except my basement, where I removed them and upgraded to LED banks about 4 years ago. lol). Hey Richard. I've been following you for a few years now and your old layout was fantastic. But the level of effort and detail you are putting into this one is beyond belief. This really is completely amazing. It is even more impressive when your hand is in shot and you can see how small these details really are. The camera makes them appear much larger. Truly amazing work.
