I think I may be some sort of classic…for that reason. Thought I was a natural, but honestly the classic used to be the least appealing to me 😂 so maybe that got in the way of objectivity. If I look at any of the things I look & feel best in, I can make the case that the lines, fabrics, etc fit either natural or classic. 🤷🏼‍♀️ perhaps DC who gained weight so I feel distorted? That or I am a natural with classic essence.

Something I think that's interesting to note about Grace Kelly's white dress is that it's not flimsy, weightless lace. Actually, It looks to be eyelet, as well the outline of the dress is pretty clean. Another fun thing to think about is how many different types of lace there are and how some could be argued more "yang" and some more "yin". At least, I think so.

My mom had a fashion and etiquette book from the 50s that said any pant or skirt with belt loops had to be worn with a belt, or it was considered sloppy! I guess it was like being not fully dressed and something you shouldn’t do, especially if you were already going more casual with slacks or jeans!

I just now realized that my grandmother is a classic type and I've seen her wordrobe as child, the same pieces like Grace Kelly's - well tailored shirts, midi skirts, some pencil skirts, and of course very classic dresses. When I was a teenager I tried all of them and it was a fabulous experience for me! Textiles are very different than today's, some of them can stand straight on you, no flexibility. But in this way the cloth actually can shape your body, not the opposite like today. I'm a pure romantic type so these classic pieces looked a little bit strange on me but they teached me what style means.

Grace Kelly was so amazing. Her waist was so tiny. I notice the styles of the fifties were so much sharper that they are today. Pointy bust, tiny waiste and curvy hips. For some reason we do not use this sharpness today although we have some of the same classic styles and pieces. Women have gotten larger so the styles and sizes have changed. I have noticed this in some of the pieces I have bought from the same brand. Ten years ago the sizes were smaller than those of 2021. I am so sad that Grace Kelly left us before her time. She died in a car accident.

  • @jlester8584
    @jlester8584 3 года назад +26

Thank you for this. You are right, classics look better in fabrics that have some body. Not too clingy or draped. They look better in tailored fits than in oversized clothes.
In the 1960s, Grace Kelly continued to wear subtle make-up. The lips got paler, more nude than red, but she kept her eye makeup fairly natural. She never worn the bold eye makeup with false lashes and dramatic liner that was in fashion in the 1960s. I've seen her with the same teased, bouffant style Jackie Kennedy wore. Hair was neat and set on curlers, but a bigger outline and softer, larger curls than the 1950s. It doesn't suit her as well, because her features are smaller, and got overpowered by such large hairdos.
At 15:45 Bell coat or swing coat were very useful to hide pregnancy. Women didn't flaunt pregnancy, but this was the post war baby-boom years. There was a whole parallel style for pregnant women, because there were so many.
At 17:25 the striped coat was a Hudson Bay Blanket Coat Jacket. The pattern is loud for her, but this style is classic since the 1930s.
At 18:10 Princess Grace is shown wearing a pink turban and an Emilio Pucci wild print. The print is large, but she can still carry it off because this one is in gentle colors, with very low value contrast.

I always struggle to feel youthful as a classic. As a 19 year old, everything always seems way to elegant that I fear the clothes will age me. Don't mistake me, I love the classic look but is such a dissonance from a more casual look that is commonly seen in people my age that I can sometimes feel off.

Wear similar styles to your contemporaries, but keep a few things in mind.
The fit is the one thing that will matter most. Not too tight, but not oversized either. If you can keep to your natural shoulder line, it helps a lot. Buy fabrics with some body to them, not too thin and limp. Not too bulky either though.
There are some things that won't suit you, ruffles, asymmetry, too many ornaments. Other that that, enjoy fashion like others wear. Natural shoulder, natural waist, a body skimming fit. Choose from fashion, but only what suits you.

Besides the good advice already given here, I recommend having great staple pieces. For example, if you want to wear a "trendy" top that's a bit shapeless, make sure that your jeans fit well to keep you from looking unkempt. On usClassics, an overall slouchy and I'll fitting outfit reads as "disheveled" rather than "relaxed".

How I've always loved the style of Grace Kelly -- so completely classic and classy! You asked for comments about fabrics from the 1950s and, since I was born in 1946, I thought I might comment. YES! Fabrics were wonderful then, and clothing construction was done with care, more like tailor-made. As a young woman in the 1960s and '70s, I loved to sew (for myself, my children, sisters and occasionally for my mom), and we had several really great fabric stores to choose from with luscious bolts of amazing woolens, silks, linens, etc. There were less blends, more natural fibers. Now fabric stores are few and far between, and their inventory doesn't come close to what used to inspire me. Times have changed.

I thought Grace Kelly was soft classic, but it makes sense that she is actually pure classic. She always stayed right in the middle, not too yang and not too yin.
I still don't know what type of classic I am. I thought I was dramatic classic because I look tall and have long limbs, and give a bit of a flamboyant natural vibe, but dramatic classic recommendations look too stiff and dull on me.
Soft classic seems more fitting but I don't look as curvy or short as other soft classics do so I feel a bit lost. And I am definitely not pure classic because my facial features also stand out a bit.
Any other classics out there have this problem?

So was Grace Kelly's fashion statement about the bold colors, the brand or the quality of the fabric? Who knowns, maybe all of the above.

The studio chose Ginger's clothes because she didn't have very good taste. She liked very frou frou styles, very low-class and tacky. She was the sort of woman who would take a beautiful, elegant gown and tack huge fake flowers all over it (actual example; yes, big, bulky fake flowers). The studio had to be very strict with her. Left to her own devices, she was kind of a disaster.

Aly I think when you are saying "costumes" you are meaning what we call "suits"! I know in many languages the word for suit is something similar to costume (also why we used to call bathing suits/swim suits "bathing costumes"!) In English today we use the word costume just for character outfits like for movies, performances, Halloween, etc.

Actually, a costume is also a noun for a woman's matching jacket and skirt, so it wasn't a mistake to call it that way.

The picture in the winter with the white coat with stripes is called The Hudson Bay coat. It is a popular traditional coat in Canada. We still wear it. That pattern is also made into scarves and mitts.

Hi, Aly! I love your channel, and I’ve learned so incredibly much about fashion in the last year I’ve followed you. But now I’m at a loss because I have no idea where to buy cute clothes! Everywhere sells ugly clothes, crop tops (never, ever wearing one), and see through materials. Where should we go to look for nice clothes that are fashionable and not crop tops?
