- I think I figured out something about Etsy tags...People think that titles and tags will get you to the top of search results on Etsy. Not so fast... while tags play an important role in Etsy SEO, it's probably not for the reason that you think it is.

My first comment here! I have done paid courses by two other leading Etsy “coaches” and listened or watched multiple others. That said, Kara Buntin is the most articulate, logical, and no nonsense of the bunch. Most importantly, her advise yields results and works. Her intelligence, logic, research and communication skills are excellent. We should all be very grateful for her, she is really great. Thank you Kara Buntin.
Well thank you! I appreciate that.
That is why I am Grateful for her!
I completely agree. Kara is the best by far. I love her no nonsense style and telling it just like it is. I have listened to others and find it difficult to get through knowing that it is said and done so much better by Kara. Thank you again, Kara 👏👏
i read on an etsy forum the other day, when writing the listing tags you can just write random words (that still have relevance to the listing) even if its not making grammatical sense, you should only be using a word one time in all your tags, so when people search, etsy picks through the tags and still shows your listing even if it was not an exact word match. Hopefully this made sense!
I've been saying that for years!
I’m amazed that you give this info for free lol thanks 🙏
It’s just the tip of the iceberg!
Thanks for the confirmation! 😃
Any time!
Super helpful, Kara! Thanks so much. Lol I was one of the people in the group who answered "yes" to your question

Its taken me so long to understand how to write a title that is clear and easy to understand for a customer, but that is also written in a way that search can read it as a long tail keyword/s. Think I now know how to write it properly thanks to your videos, still not easy but think that is more down to what I sell (art) more than anything. Have been rewriting my tags and trying to follow the advice and its slow going but even though I am not getting that many views and visits they do seem to be slowly increasing and aligning so that is good and as I add more products think that will help improve my conversion rate.
The fact that you said you've been writing titles so that the search engine will read them as long tail keywords makes me want to do a follow up to this video. Don't worry about the long tail ones so much, Etsy will find you for those if the words are in your titles and tags somewhere. Etsy is not a search engine that works only on exact word order match.
Thank you for the information - I have been on Etsy since end of summer 2021 and just hit 20 sales last week. I have redone my tags and titles several times after researching videos that said they all must match - going to give this a try now and see if it helps!
One thing you should do is stop messing with them all the time if you’re doing that! Redo them again if you want to but then leave them alone so that the search engine has something to work with and doesn’t have to keep adjusting.
I wish Etsy would lengthen beyond 20 characters for tags to allow for more creativity with long tail...alas! Anyway, I certainly enjoy your channel, Kara.
I totally agree, they should just give us one box that has 260 characters total, since they don't look at tags individually.
@@KaraBuntin That would be so dope! The SEO keywords tools would have a stroke though lol!
Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching!
I am new here and you are awesome Kara!!
thanks for watching!
Awesome video, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Amazon is my "tag" haven!
Absolutely!
What about seasonal or trending tags? Especially if it can be applied to the product.
Also, I’m curious what video editor do you use? I’m looking for a simple one to make quick videos.
I use the adobe video editor, i think it’s called premiere? It’s not simple… you can add seasonal tags but do it a little ahead of time.
Hello Kara,
If not appropriate to post this comment here, please let me know.
Is it true that if you change an active listing's photos, it may halt the sales for a few days? My friend claims this has happened to him twice. And he says it stops the sales for all listings in the account, not just for that particular listing! And now I am hesitant to make photos of active listings better. Images got some kind of "invincibility" against me now.
If you share your answer, I will appreciate that.
Thank you in advance.
That's 100% not true. Changing a photo to one that's not as appealing to customers could slow sales down because people wouldn't click on the listing as much if the picture isn't good, but it won't stop sales in your shop. Making improvements will always be okay, but if something is selling well I'd leave it alone and not change anything.
@@KaraBuntin Thank you for your time.
I reworked the tags of a lot of my listings and my stats tanked. This month I've had zero sales and a max of 15 visits/day. I'm frustrated >
Unless you did something like add a ton of irrelevant keywords, I doubt that it was the tags changes that did that. But if you changed things that were already working, never do that. Etsy will decide that it likes a listing for some reason, and if you change anything that could be the one thing it likes it for, so who knows. The economy also sucks right now so people are paying for gas and food, not things on etsy so much.
Kara, do our main keywords have to auto populate in the search bar?
No, that's another myth.
@@KaraBuntin so say if I’m listing a women’s camping shirt. Would I include that along with camping T-shirt, camping tee, camping gift, etc. or just write it in a simple to understand sentence?
Figure out which one of those phrases has the best search and engagement, then use that one in the exact word order. Add the other terms in like a sentence as much as possible so that it's easy to read. So if "camping tee" is the best keyword of that group, for example, you'd write it "Women's camping tee shirt, gift for outdoor enthusiast. T-Shirt with camper and tent" or whatever it is. Then put "Camping tee" in the tags to match it in the title.
@@KaraBuntin sentances are the part that took me so long to understand, but finally got there. However even before reading this comment of yours I didnt realise that keywords didnt have to auto populate, had a suspition that was a load of.... but good to know.
I get confused with tags ok so I have a bag but it has front pockets and zipper so then in tags do I add front pocket and another tag zipper , or front pocket bag , bagwith zipper ? Like are just words ok for tags ?
Individual words are fine if you can’t make phrases out of them. As long as the word is in a tag somewhere, Etsy will find it and combine it with other words from the title and tags to match the search query.
Did the bot mess with our algorithm yesterday (Sunday) again? I got scared and I put my shop on vacation mode just for the night.
It looks like I had a spike on the 17th but not yesterday. It might have hit different shops, though,
@@KaraBuntin Thank you for always answering. I really really appreciate it. Should I just go on vacation mode whenever I notice it? bc my shop is so new, I can't take these hits. I was doing pretty good until 3/7th. Thank you.
@@lisac.2438 no, it's nothing to worry about, you don't need to be scared of anything happening to your shop. It's just something that messes up your stats because it's not real traffic, it's just computers
can we talk about shipping adjustsment by usps ? i feel like they are stealing money from me
They have a system that scans packages randomly to see if the correct postage was purchased, and it sometimes doesn't pick up the right package. If you get an adjustment that isn't right, you have to contest it with the post office. Whether it's going to work or not is up in the air, but i've had adjustments that actually gave me money when they shouldn't have, so it goes both ways.
