Joseph Duncan I think Metallica now owns the copyright to all their own music. I think James said this on joe rogan. So I wonder if Metallica would care about striking this down for copyright? Interesting to think about
That transition from rage to melodic back to rage. This song plays to the timeline of the progression of the drug addiction. The rage before the fix in the beginning, then the euphoric high and calmness in the bridge, just before the storm when the drug takes hole, and then the rage comes back to run your life again at the end of the song.... that was the genius behind this song. They didn't just write lyrics to meet the feelings behind the music. They wrote the music to express the entire cycle in it's entirety
This song is 33 years old (1986) and it's still one of the heaviest, yet most melodic pieces of music ever written. The rest of the album is very good too.
@@echoradius2299 No, seriously, it is one the best albums made. I favor the understatement. Also, James should get extra credit for his guitar work because he down-plucks every single note.

I chose this song to analyse in a year 10 english class, purely on the basis that is was 9 minutes long and my teacher hated metal and I knew it was going to piss him off. I heard an audible sigh when I announced it. No regrets.
I actually got iron maidens ryme of the ancient Mariner to be a short lived official part of the English curriculum in school because I introduced it to a teacher who had no idea about what metal actually was and she wound up loving it because of how well it helped translate the poem for people in class.
I really enjoyed watching this guy's reaction. It isn't every day that ya get to watch a grown man discover real music for the first time. Thank you for sharing this moment with us all. And keep rockin!
And I think that's what this guy and what most of today's kids don't grasp. I was onto Kill 'Em All when it came out (I was in high school so it was right in the teen boy sweet spot for that kind of music) but it was Ride the Lightning that was the real bomb. I couldn't play that album enough back in the day and everyone I knew was just blown away by the sound. Metallica, with that album, took over heavy metal music...and, like you said, they did it with no assistance whatsoever from traditional music mass media. Back in those days it was word of mouth and some late night, heavy metal show on the radio. No internet, no Limewire yet, very little airplay and only some spotty coverage on MTV. The groups that rose to the top, like Metallica, did so without a pushed media blitz/agenda like they do today. They played instruments. They sang without autotune. True musical talent on display done, oftentimes, without any expectation of vast fame and fortune that top 40 acts enjoyed. Actual musical talent. And if this guy liked what he heard on its own merits, imagine how much more impressed he'd be if he was aware of the environment that that album arose from.
@@craig328 but the sad thing is , metal bands barely even get platinum albums. Metallica , iron maiden , black sabbath , judas priest , ozzy osbourne , dio , megadeth , pantera are the only real metal bands that have platinum albums. And it's shocking that the number of the bands is only 8.
James Hetfield was 22 when they wrote this song... I always thought it was funny to look at Beiber when he was 22 compared to how rough Hetfield was. Different times man...different times.
Ahha! so this is the first 'Tallica song that started it all for you (found the channel yesterday with the reaction video to The Unforgiven) you have since gained a Metallica shirt and a couple of things for your wall. It's always awesome watching someone join the Metallica Family.
The Black Album is why. That album helped make them the biggest metal band in the world. It's not their best album but it is their most commercially successful.
I remember hearing MoP at some sports camp - a friend was like "dude, you gotta listen to it". I was barely into Linkin Park back then. It felt like opening the door to Narnia. I've never felt so "opened" since. Masterpiece this song.
Im kinda jealous of you bro. You're like that person discovering an amazing TV show everyone has already watched, but you get to binge watch all of it because there are 10 seasons of content lol.
"I just got a sudden urge to shake and convulse" - It's the call of the headbanger, my young friend. Much will you have to learn. Now go get a guitar, some beers and grow your hair out.
Fun Fact: Lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, reflecting on this album said he regrets that, when they recorded this album, he didn't know more about playing guitar solos. What??
@The LaggingGamer I disagree. He's one of the easiest guys on the planet to dislike and, while there are better drummers, his drumming is, imo, over-hated on.
Well...if You Compare Kirk's Solos on Songs written Later-to Early Metallica(Dave/James)there is Agreement with Him. Part of Being a Musician is Composition and Writing and at THAT TIME-Metallica WAS Cliff and James!! Also include the Style that Mustaine Imprinted on the Bands Early Guitar Sound.
Nopez20 I grew up on Metallica and am a big fan. But explain what happened after the black album? They weren't the same their older albums are master pieces. Now they should just not make music anymore.
Music and Musicians evolve/grow. Metallica made alot of good songs on both sides of The Black Album, they lost a dear friend and a brother in Cliff Burton, and it changed them to have Jason in their band, if you actually go and watch the movie somekind of monster, you'll see what Metallica is all about. Metallica made masterpieces like Unforgiven 2, Fuel , The Memory Remains, Hero of the day, The Unnamed feeling, all nightmare long and more. I didn't like Garage inc for a long time and refered to it as Garbage inc, but man i gotta say i really started appreciating some of the songs from that aswell, although they're cover songs, Whisky in the jar and Merciful fate are simply fantastic. my absolute favorite songs as in my top 10 would also feature songs like Master of puppets, Ride the lightning, Nothing else matters, Fade to black and seek and destroy, but it would sure as hell also feature The memory remains and fuel at the very least. And let's not forget the S&M Album, probably the most artistic and phenomenonal album ever made, if you don't like it you're a comunist bastard who hates America and the western world. =D
I'm also a hiphop head listening to Metallica first time through this video and I was doing the same thing until I read this comment and got conscious 😂 🤦♂️
One of the first songs I learned on electric guitar. SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY. Down picking is such a challenge! James is the king of rhythm guitar. Him speaking from the perspective of the drug of choice is incredible as a writer. Mocking and all powerful. Just an amazing song and album. Cliff! RIP!
Best comment indeed, for me it was 'Be all, end all' - but my life was not the same after hearing it in '88 (Germany), I entered one of the greatest subcultures, with lifelong friends, recruited my girlfriends and finally wife from there (and from goths, nice girls, just smelled weird), now 46 year long haired father of two, still drumming along. Not wanting to draw a parallel tho this 'thug life' stuff, if you found metal or if it finds you, but the thing is that every metalhead I know has his/her story to tell, you don't end up with us accidentally, it all makes sense, it is a huge therapy after all. I owe metal so much that I could never possibly pay back, so I kinda feel sorry for the guy in the video, Alex, you've been missing out... big time.
Given your comments about loving the instruments and not needing lyrics, you MUST listen to the greatest metal instrumental of all time... Metallica's "Orion."
Metallica - One Probably the greatest song of all time, but if you react to it, PLEASE do NOT watch the music video. There are a lot of movie clips in it and at times it drowns out the song to where you're only focusing on the movie.
I would listen to the song alone first, then watch the music video to get the full effect. Maybe check out the book Johnny Got His Gun, the song's inspiration, too.
Note: Master of Puppets is about a man having a discussion with his addictions and his addictions straight up telling him they're going to fucking kill him.
I´m a Metallica Fan since almost 30 years and it´s really cool to see the reactions of someone who has never heard Metallica before. Master of Puppets is also one of my favourites. Because of your reactions you now have a fan in Germany ;-) (But never ever stop a solo played by Kirk again)
Holyyyyyy crap I actually teared on how he reacted to Kirks solo...damn dude I was 9 years old when my dad introduced me to Metallica. Thank for this video bro. Brought back a crap ton of memories.
Bro I was jammin kill em all when I was 1. Lol. My dad had a huge old school tape player with like 10 speakers in the living room. Every night we had metal lessons. Great times.
Cheers guys, my pops introduced me to Metallica at 4 in 1991. I remember getting into the black album but then hearing ride and master when I was a little older and falling in love. Im 30 now and my pops' been gone for almost 9 years. But every time I put on some Metallica, its like he's right next to me.
It was March of '94, and I was hanging out at the local comic & games shop, playing this hot new TCG called "Magic The Gathering" with some other kids from school when the owner dropped a CD he'd just picked up into the player. It was The Black Album. By the end of Enter Sandman, I was hooked. I've been a metal-head ever since.
The feeling one has first hearing Metallica; especially this song. I envy anyone that moment. I remember mine like yesterday: 12 or 13, stoned for the first time and drinking Colt 45 that we stole from the gas station. On my buddy's porch, with a boom box tape deck. Changed my life.
Funny thing is that none of the members of Metallica were heroin addicts. James Hetfield ha said in the past that the lyrics were subconsciously referencing his alcohol addiction and he never understood it until he went into rehab.
"chop your breakast on a mirror" thats not alcohol. No, none of them ever did that, but they still made this song to open others eyes, who were doing it. Also, he says "fix me" and in concerts when he says that, and makes a gesture as if he's injecting himself.
i also want to suggest like orion or fade to black, but one is good middle ground for metallica's instrumentals and ballads. please react to one of those!
Ditto!!! If you are serious about checking out Metallica, you will LOVE 'One'. Metallica's layering throughout the song as it builds op to the end is AMAZING!!!
No shit!!!! HipHop must be left to right....Headbanging is UP & DOWN!! How to not look like an idiot headbanging = HEAD ALL THE WAY DOWN as if you are looking at your shoes....BACK AND FORTH FROM THERE!! Slightly slouched forward...Bring your chin to your chest!!! COMMIT!! NO HALFASS BANGIN!! LONG HAIR IS A PLUSSS!!!!! If you see a dope headbanging and he is upright and looking straight ahead with his head kind of bouncing up and down = SCARED POSERASS, NOT BANGING!! If you copy METALLICA'S James and Cliff (Late Original Bassist) you'll be just fine. Proper Headbanging Technique can be observed by watching SLAYER Live!!!! But then you are goin in DEEP son....SLAYER and METALLICA are the beasts from the 80s that will make your CD/MP3 collection grow/change forfuckinever!!

And surely, slowing down a solo would definetely make the elitists happier.......

My sister had it on cassette in 1989, so I heard it muffled then from the neighbouring room. The I bought the Black Album in late 91
O by the way, you should live vicariously through watching Vicarious by Tool, if you can handle the intense CG video, that is.

HELL YEAH!
Lmao that's awesome
Ha same! I picked it for a 10th grade Health class. Teacher turned it off about 6 minutes in saying that we got the idea...

I really enjoyed watching this guy's reaction.
It isn't every day that ya get to watch a grown man discover real music for the first time.
Thank you for sharing this moment with us all. And keep rockin!
This album went 6x platinum with virtually no radio play in its day...Metal of this magnitude was not a commercial friendly genre til years later...
10x ? I thought it got 6x
10x ? I thought it got 6x
Metallica’s music is like a runaway train!! So much talent and they really gave 110% in everything they did!!

The Black Album is why. That album helped make them the biggest metal band in the world. It's not their best album but it is their most commercially successful.

Your first ever Metallica song is Master of Puppets?!?!?! Bro, you picked the perfect song to introduce yourself to such an amazing band! \m/

@@Heyoo414 I agree
I owe metal so much that I could never possibly pay back, so I kinda feel sorry for the guy in the video, Alex, you've been missing out... big time.

Funny thing is that none of the members of Metallica were heroin addicts. James Hetfield ha said in the past that the lyrics were subconsciously referencing his alcohol addiction and he never understood it until he went into rehab.
Mustaine was. That's why he got booted.
chop your breakfast on a mirror does not refer to alcohol
"chop your breakast on a mirror" thats not alcohol. No, none of them ever did that, but they still made this song to open others eyes, who were doing it. Also, he says "fix me" and in concerts when he says that, and makes a gesture as if he's injecting himself.
I can't speak to the whole band. The mirror reference has merit. BUT Ive heard Hetfield talk about alcoholism referring to himself.
