    Man it feels good to finally start doing these types of on-location videos again! These past several months have been very difficult for me and my creativity definitely took a toll. I figured the best way to get out of a rut is just to simply get out there and do something! ANYTHING! Luckily, the timing couldn’t have been perfect because my friend Stan so happened to have planned a night for astro! This is a video that a few of you have been asking for and I’m happy to finally bring it to you guys! So please, ENJOY! More of these types of videos are coming soon! PEACE V!

    I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years now. I never had a camera but I finally saved up for one and bought one earlier this year. Settled on a A7C. And thanks to this video I decided to go with the 24mm 1.4 GM. I love going back to watch your videos to relearn everything now that I have a camera. Keep up the amazing work and I’ll keep supporting. Thank you.

    I finally got my full frame, Sony 7r3. I was going to pair it with the 16-35 but to save money I bought the 24G. This video just confirms I don’t regret it. I got some nice end of season Milky Way shots and I’m loving the lens.

    Most valuable thing I learned was to back off a smidge from infinity. I've been doing astrophotography casually for a little bit, but always find that my images are as crisp as I'd like. I think this may he the key. Thanks so much!
    It would be helpful if you had more text highlighting the main comparison points and included prices, size and weight. :)

    Get the 12-24GM out!!! But would definitely would like to see that Laowa 12mm. Like Stan said, the 20G is by far the easiest to focus, it just works. Thank you for an entertaining review/comparison. Two of my favorites out doing what they do best!

    The 25 Batis is the lens I traveled through Iceland with and it's just stunning for stars, aurora, landscapes and even portraits when done right. Subjects pop and it really gets the stars at night.

  • @mrcrotalusatrox1513
    @mrcrotalusatrox1513 3 года назад +4

    This was an interesting review and i've found your other reviews really useful :-), but in this case, most of these lenses actually aren't wide enough for a lot of astro (unless you shoot a multi-row panorama). That's the reason Stan says, "I would only use it at 12mm." Jason, if you want this sort of review to be useful, include the ultra-wides like the Laowa 15mm F2, sigma 14mm f1.8, etc and then show how much foreground you lose when using the sony 20mm f1.8 and Sony 24 f1.4. That was the review I wish i'd found before I started Astro.
    The Sony 24mm was my first astro lens because I watched the reviews saying it was great, but now I never use it because while it's optically perfect, it's just not wide enough for most landscape astrophotography or milky way shots. Now I do a one row pano in portrait orientation with my 15mm Laowa for milky way arcs. The 24 is mostly an expensive paper weight.

      Sold the 24gm to get 14-24 sigma, much happier on overall flexibility. The GM was a not wide enough for astro. Started to get more coma at 1.4 as it got older.
      The sigma is good but if you live in a really dark sky the noise iso is getting too high. This is because I do not like star trails, so the 500 rule is out, more like 250. The sigma has coma at 2.8 but on the GM I was stopping down anyway to get rid of coma, which was a waste. Don't be a pixel peeper folks!
      Sigma can do zoom bursts, rear filters are fiddly but easy to be always carrying and better in landscape, architecture and interiors- so it wins!

  • @echoauxgen
    @echoauxgen Год назад

    The A7siii is awesome and the lenses are also. BUT look at the NPF rule for lens mm and camera model otherwise you will get elongated stars. And no matter the faster the glass 1.4/1.8/2.8 the faster the SS, for years f/4 was the norm and a 20s to 30s could be done with perfect pinpoint stars and very bright even at 6400. I used the old Sony APS-C E 10-18mm f/4 OSS (15-27mm) but in FF 12-18mm (18 if you remove the light shield) after Trey Ratcliff's 12mm review for landscapes, at 30s for 3 years before the Sony FE-12-24mm f/4 for the panorama wide look with the A7S. Even the FE 16-35mm f/4 is great. Also if you go to A7iii you get ISO Invariance so a lower ISO dark image with less noise can be brightened with just exposure. The one thing good about faster SS is a faster shot when doing panos and using camera NR you can go to the next shot during NR using a stepper (that you can feel in the dark) so a 200 degree pano can be done in about 1 1/2 min. They mention Bright Monitoring it is on Mod 2 models like A7ii/A7Rii/A7Sii as an add those models have IBIS AND on camera apps like the filters app where you do not need to carry filters, You can capture the MW above a bright town with a fast SS for the foreground and a slow SS for sky and ISO, f/, etc. Makes those models life long keepers!!!!

      Please do Stan as in day light the 20mm performs well and is not as expensive as Sony primes. 😀 Thanks for taking the time to do this. Would also like to know if you get the same results on other Sony bodies

      If you look into the timing of moon, cloudy days and milky way location, there is bugger all shooting days in a year. Then you need to live within 2 hours of dark sky. It's a big investment, hope you get something out of it.

    Have you disabled automatic lens corrections in-camera?
    It's not an apples to apples lens comparison if the auto lenses have vignetting, CA and distortion all corrected/reduced against naked manual lenses.
