Have been battling pulls for months. They come out of nowhere. So thankful that you explained it in great detail with instruction on how to correct it. This is the exact reason why I am a paying Top Speed Golf member. Your teaching ability is the best anywhere.
There's something about your explanations that make more sense than any other golf tutorials I've seen. The right shoulder staying high rather than staying in your posture seems like exactly what I'm doing when I hit a bad shot and pull it. Thanks!
Just so happy to have you back making golf videos. Subscribed here on RUclips as well as a paying Top Speed Golf member. Just can't say enough good things about your golf instruction abilities that translate into actually improving my swing. Thanks a bunch!!!
Thanks man this was probably the best instruction I have seen on this. My scores have gone down 5-10 strokes since watching this a few times. usually shoot 48-52 on 9 holes and last week I shot 46 on front and a 40 on the back and the back should have been a 39 but I choked and 3-putted : ) I am excited about golf again. Thank you!
Ive been battling hooks and pulls for sometime now. Ive checked my grip, stance, and posture but didnt think about my right shoulder turn into the swing until now. Will give it a go! Thank you!
This is such a great video. No one explains root cause of faults in the golf swing better than you. I started pulling my shots left a couple of months ago, came out of nowhere, nightmare on the course as you can imagine. I just watched this, then went back and watched a video I took of myself, and this is exactly what I'm doing. Weekend coming up, looks like I'll be hitting the range!
Clay A lot of practice swings and following your instructions resulted in great shots and great form. A great check point is to note that if your right shoulder moves as you suggest then when you come through impact your arms and shaft will retain the angle. As well your suggestion to lead with the hands will definitely generate pro style trajectory. There's a lot of info in this instructional video. Tremendous value
Clay This is a power packed video as it covers several topics. I will try this shoulder move at the range starting with spine tilt to the right to get the right shoulder under. Will get back.
That is an absolutely fantastic description of curing a pull. Can,t wait to get to the range as I have suffered from pulling particularly my shorter irons for years.
Thanks for this I defiantly noticed I stay way too level with my iron swings which has caused me to to be super inconsistent! Will defiantly be working this into my drills
I finally have found the right video on how to rotate upper body I've been looking for for a long time!!! I have long wanted to watch a video like this in American version. I wanted to know what American instructors teach on how to rotate or move upper body. In Japan, some Japanese instructors teach the same way. I just want to be sure that they are right. Thanks Clay.
Hi Anthony, you got me there. Pulled/hooked shots are from having the face too closed usually and that is not related to choking down on the club. I would just feel like you're leaving the face open at impact. Try hitting the inside part of the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, hitting great tee shots pulling my second iron shots not scoring well because of the pull. Struggling trying to determine if I’m coming over the top or just closing my club. Will try keeping my rt elbow in. Great vid be safe
Been pulling the ball like this for forty years. Learn to aim far right on all my iron shots. Not sure I can make the change. Brother told me to take up another sport. He’s a scratch golfer.....me, I do good if I break 100. We’ve been playing since high school.
Mine come when I swing too hard, usually in between clubs. Club up swing normal helps me quite a bit. I know at least for me I got this concept with my distances misconstrued. If I go out and get it I can carry pw 140, and about 10 yards up the bag, but I’m left or right, instead of playing a 9 or even an 8. I’m a firm believer in that’s 90 percent of everyone’s problem. But I tend not to swing softer because for some reason I tend to duff shots more swinging slower. My guess is from deceleration.
I must add a 3rd comment. You have to move right shoulder and right knee together when starting the downswing as Clay is doing. IF the right shoulder doesnt move the clubhead will get away from you and you will hit behind the ball
Try just finishing a high follow through/???? Most of the time a pull is due to a weak follow through...aim your follow through at your target works for me and fixed my pulls
Hi Cecil, a pull is caused by an out to in club path and the club face being in line with that path. Your high follow through may help you to swing more from the inside. It's not usually a direct correlation in my experience. Glad you found something that works great for you. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Love your guidance and watch all your videos. I have a favor to ask. Instead of left and right. Could you say front and back? It’s hard enough to visualize the opposite approach as a left hander without the reinforced audio, lol.
Hi Clay, you have solved with this video one huge problem!! Thanks a lot. I would love to take some private lessons, is that a possibility?, where are you based?. Again, thank you!!!!

Last week as I was watching golf on tv, the commentator was discussing John Rahm's swing and he said, look how close to the ball he's standing (for an iron shot). Is Rahm setting himself up not to pull the ball? This week, Dustin Johnson was driving the ball poorly in round 2 of the Fedex championship and he worked on his driving after the round. They also said that his correction was to stand closer to the ball. Obviously, you can stand too close but is it a common thing for people to stand too far from the ball?
Rahm stands much closer to it then most players on Tour. I would say it would be a bad idea for most amateurs to stand closer to the ball. Most average players move their hips closer to the ball during the swing so standing closer would just take away more space for the club to swing through and cause more issues. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Do you have a video on how to fix and/or drills for fixing forward spine tilt (as in tilting towards the target) . I got analyzed on "MY SWING" showed a vertical address position then at impact a forward tilt only 5 degrees at impact. They wanted me to work on a -17 to -24 at impact.(all he could tell me. from the instructions) my forward tilt I think is my main problem . it causes a pull and a over the top move. does your membership allow us to send you my "MY SWING" data for a true pro to look at? this is rather new to them here in CHINA now. He has a hard time explaining it to me in English, Unfortunately I work here and ranges here charge by the hour. 50-60 practice swings and working on my swing just isn't affordable here. so basically I'm just hitting as fast as I can.
Funny for me I feel in my LOVER BODY first with a slight smidgen to much lateral slide into the left step pivot throwing off a proper transition location, instead of staying in sequence balance out in front of me with what you call posture...... That over the top feel equals a symptom of what happen in a unbalanced pivot/transition properly first IMO.
Hi Rod, the ball is going to start mostly in the direction of the club face and curve away from the path assuming center contact. If the ball starts straight and curves left then your face is square and your path is out to the right assuming center contact. Ball struck on the toe will tend to want to draw and balls struck on the heel will tend to want to fade due to gear effect. If you'd like to learn more about this stuff then I would recommend doing Trackman's free education series, Trackman University. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
this may help me, my problem right now is somehow, i think i go to far over the top , not bringing the club around my body and that causes me to hit it short and left.. i think but im not really sure, its become a problem for me in the last few days
Hi Jordan, I would recommend you use an app like V1 or Hudl to video your swing. This will tell you a lot about what is going on. We have a great video on the website that will help you diagnose about anything that is going on. Yeah, this is pretty common for most people. I would recommend that you use an app like V1 or Hudl and video your swing. That will tell you a lot of what is going on. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi, if you swing in to out and still pull the ball then you're likely hitting it off the heel too. If the face is closed and you're swinging in to out with a center strike, that ball is going to hook. I would check your strike locations with impact tape or something like that. To get the face to open, I would exaggerate it as much as you can. Try to get the ball to start as far right as possible. Then just ease off of it to get to where you want to be. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
At .45 he says whichever direction the ball starts is going to be the direction the face is pointed at contact. I disagree. The ball ends up where the face is pointed at contact and it starts out in the direction of the swing path. This point has been made repeatedly over the decades by many PGA professional teachers. This was also explained by Jack Nicklaus in one of his instructional videos. Just a minor point, but I think it's important to understand the physics of what's happening in order to correct unwanted ball flight.
***** You missed my point. He says "whichever direction the ball starts is going to be the direction the face is pointed at contact." That is an incorrect statement. It's the swingpath that determines the line of the ball until other influences effect ball direction.
Aussie Mike New ball flight laws on what planet? The laws of physics don't change. Also, your statement is an incomplete sentence. You don't quantify what a main determining factor is. Distance? Ball flight direction? End location? FYI- Swing path induced energy "overrides" backspin energy and backspin energy overrides sidespin energy. As swing path induced energy wanes, then backspin induced energy takes over. When backspin induced energy wanes then sidespin induced energy takes over. All of this under the influence of gravity and air resistance variables. Look it up.

Hi Scott, are you pulling or hooking? If you have an inside out swing path and the ball is going left then you face is closed which means the ball should hook. It's possible that it could be your alignment. You may feel as though you are lined up on target but in reality you are lined up left of your target. Best of luck. ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard I've checked my alignment on the range and my aim is solid. The ball is drawing and starting left. It ends up 30 to 40 yards left. My best guess was for some reason I'm turning my hands over excessively. Right shoulder turned too far? Not finishing down the line? Possibly falling back a bit?
Bourne Accident...I have read all of your posts and nowhere in them have you referred to Trackman, Foresight or Flight Scope. This is CURRENT science and ball flight. ALL of these systems have PROVEN that the clubface dictates the start line of the ball and that the swing path dictates the curvature in the shot. I respect Nicklaus, Hogan and Moe Norman for their accomplishments and advancing the game of golf, but when it comes to the new ball flight laws and again, the PROVEN characteristics using systems like Trackman, Foresight and Flight Scope that take the guesswork out of the golf swing and lets great instructors like Clay Ballard, Sean Foley, Butch Harmon, Cameron McCormick, etc teach the true mechanics and dispels false beliefs based on guesswork and human error.

I feel like the only way not to pull the ball is to hit it a little fat
