This was an excellent instructional demonstration as it showed exactly the downward and forward movement of the club throughout the entire swing, as well as showed and explained the potential effects of the club’s face. Stopping and explaining each transition really helped me understand at which point my swing is less than ideal. This was helpful to me-thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I've been trying to figure this out for 20 years , not one of the 25 pros that I've had lessons from has explained it this well. I just got done hitting balls, not one Pull Thank you
Wow, you are the first person to be able to demonstrate why I’m pulling my shots in such a way that it makes sense. I am definitely your number 2 example because that’s the feeling I’ve trained to purposefully. For weeks, I’ve tried to have my trunk pull my arms through. Thanks so much for this. I’ll incorporate this drill today because I’m tired of missing so far left.
Swing too hard for one at least for me. But other than that I’m interested in trying this. First tee 327 par 4 Tight fairway so I hit just a little puncher out to get on the fairway be dead center at about 60 to 110 out depending on what I’ve used, then boom to the left like Beyoncé. Bogey what should be a par. Then second hole the pull is already in play. Tee shot I have to get at least 260-270 but pull left into a tree. Shot 78 my lowest 18 score, other day I had great chance of beating it I had a 37 on front 9 then 45. Because 2 holes
I only get the pills when I’m trying to hit a draw. I play a beautiful fade but instead of playing what I can I get in my head and always try play the ball both direction. I just feel like I got to low 80s high 70s playing this shot but if I could get both directions working for me I could become scratch or at least break from a mid handicap to low. I just want to be able to have the confidence to know the ball will at least be close to where I intend it to be and stop having to save myself so much
I am a relative newcomer to the game and taking lessons from a local pro. I have this exact issue of pulling to the left. My coach did many adjustments to my swing that left me more confused and frustrated. This is exactly what I needed! Thank you for this excellent video.
I have this exact issue. I struggled with a slice all my life. I've recently started lessons with a PGA pro. He strengthened my grip and taught me to rotate to square the club face. 30 or so years ago, I was taught to shift weight to my rear leg, and then shift to the lead leg while turning around that lead leg, releasing the club by turning my wrists and forearms to square the club face. Ever since learning the modern swing, my miss has been a pull left that draws/hooks after starting dead left. I think this video in particular will help me cure that mistake and hit the ball straighter.
Great vid! I’ve seen this drill before but a big question is when you are pulling down from the top, what matchup is needed/shallowing technique so that the force pulling down on the grip doesn’t steepen the shaft to much and send the clubhead out over the top. Thank you so much in advance! Keep up the great content !
Very helpful and exactly an issue that is one of the last ones I really have to work through. It's very subtle, I only need to get my hand down about 2-3 inches and delay my hips a tiny bit to get into that position, but it's one of the more persistent challenges to try and fix. My swing has made a ton of progress lately, but this one is plaguing me just a bit :). I'll use this drill to see if I can get that last little hitch out of my swing.
This is by far the best tip I need now. My understanding is by avoiding pulling left, this also improves ball contact with the clubface by making the swing arc more oval other than circular round, helps better covering the ball (as indicated in one of your other video clips) by moving the hands as low as can be in the downswing (as indicated in your other clip). Results are great: more distance and more accuracy. MUCH APPRECIATION from Saudi Arabia to you, Kerrod Gray.
I hit good drives then the trouble begins. The second shot has been my score killer for the last six years. The dead left pull!!! That’s me. I am going to try this tip and hope and pray I can get it, I will let you know. Thanks for this tip BTW I felt you where looking at my swing and talking to me.
Best way ? STOP listening to the BS about the ‘Over the Top’ from the so-called Miracle golf Swing/alleged Ben Hogan ‘expert’. You want to his straight?. Get the clubhead path ‘straight’ …and that is impossible with an OTT movement
Terrific instruction on this swing concept. This describes exactly how my game was today. The drill seems spot on and I will take it to the range this week. It’s so frustrating to hit a great drive, have a short iron in and yank it to the left. Happened at least 3 times today. Thanks Kerry.
Wow, this tip helped me SO MUCH! I watched it before I played today, then worked on the range before the round to get the feel of dropping my hands straight down. Played my best round of the year - 71 - and my ball striking was so solid. THANKS!
Found when I say seventeen during swing my tempo makes it good feeling of club dropping.used to say Ernie Els or Cindy Crawford but found VJ Singh's 'Seven teen'.fits my tempo best. Dennis
I think this would explain a miss I had the other day. I had about 115 yds in and my divot point straight at the flag, but my ball missed 15 yards left on the green. It wasn’t a hook or draw either. So I’m thinking I pulled the handle down too much and pulled it left.
pull shot also occurs with beginner golfers.....when they don't complete their body turn. Even if they come inside with their swing, the club still gets pulled around .....due to the body not properly turning through impact. If the body stops turning, it forces the club to swing around, resulting in a pull.
the club face determines the starting direction of the golf ball. Path determines the curvature left to right or right to left. What you are teaching here is ancient ball flight rules. A quick session on a Trackman will tell you all you need to know.
I have the opposite problem, suddenly my balls are slicing to the right; on the irons only. Driver has gotten very straight as it’s the main club I’ve been practicing over the past 5 months or so.
Really interesting. I'm a lefty and I think I have a similar swing fault. With the longer clubs I get a lot of shots going out to my left. I feel like my lead arm pulls and I hack the face toward the ball instead of dropping down like demo'd in the video. Eager to try out and get a feel for this.
Great video. I always struggke with pull lefts, be interesting to see how that works. Would that be the same with the driver? As i have low snap hooks with that.
What's really frustrating is when you start pulling shots on the course and nothing you do can fix it during the round. Then you get on the range to work it out and not pull a single shot. For me, if a swing fault shows up during a round, that round is over.
Justin Rose missed cut at Open..one of my favorite players...I now will thing of his preswing dropping club..wonder if picking left lower quadrant of ball to hit might would help keep club inside...think will stick to your preswing dropping the club get the feel the motion rather thand add to my 35 swing thoughts on the backswing. Thanks your concise instruction Dennis in Vancouuver BC
This is exactly my problem. I gave up golf for 20 years, and taking it back up, I'm hittting the ball well most of the time, but I seem to pull all my short irons left, and sometimes pull longer irons and fairway woods as well. This would explain it, as my arms are locked to the body, and pulled downward by my leg drive and weight shift. You have explained the solution perfectly, and I see exactly what you are doing. Now, can I replicate it without hitting the ball fat? We shall soon see. ;)
Excellent way to explain this. I have this issue and it kills me. I really like your videos and you have a great presentation style. Just subscribed and keep up the good work.
ffs..I used to play off 16, quit for a few years due to kids.......got back in and developed a beautiful draw, which is completely unwanted most of the time. I've been turning my shoulders more to the right at address to try and offset, but that just moves the low point further back and makes it worse. Trie to hit with a 'flatter' swing, but that just ruins the arc and takes everything way offline, making it all worse. I just could not figure out how to start right and let my natural draw bring me back on centre....... You just nailed it....... Drop my arms on the squat, which opens everything up to let the head have plenty 'square' time and space to flow through the impact. Now I'm back to hitting them right of target to bring them back in.....now I just need to moderate the draw control. Thank you.
Great instructional vid. Thanks so much. This is exactly me. The thing that has helped me a lot recently is putting an alignment stick in the ground, on my right side, at an angle and making sure I swing under it on the way through. I always knew about this drill but never used it. I was amazed how much it changed my swing path instantly knowing I had to get under the stick on the DS. The first part of my DS feels so slow when I drop my hands. Swing path is now in to out. Ball fight is lower with a slight draw (except when I get too quick with my hands and smash into the alignment stick 🤦♂️). Thanks again for the great content.
Great stuff. I was swinging well...last year...but starting the year with a consistent pull...even on half-swings! Thanks for the demo of the bad swings as I sense that my hands were too far from my body and, yes, I'm terrified of hitting well behind the ball. Rehearsing in three parts is giving me confidence. Now to the range!
I've been doing a great ball strike...wide left approx 10-15 yards. So i shoot my shot and aim for the right edge of the green! Works pretty good if you seriously aim for the right edge...
I went from slicing the ball to pulling it so far left. I will have the occasional straight shot that starts left and fades back on line. Beautiful shots but cant do them consistently enough. And my baseball brain hasnt learned to slow down my swing yet
Good info...I was an 6 hcp. Then I got sick with cancer and had Hip, both knees, and right ankle replaced over the last 10 yrs. With all the joint replacements and changing my swing. i now am working hard to get back my swing. I hit big draws. Sometimes i hit a mid flight hook or pull. Someone said that I was flipping my hands. Maybe I am to steep? Back when I was a 6 hcp. I whore a ankle brace on my right ankle. Plastic. I could not push off very well. My swing was more of a timing swing. Now I can push off good. I put a ball 6 to 8 inches behind my ball to make sure the path is correct. That doesn't work. It;s frustrating. The driver is straight and maybe a draw. FW. Big draw. I think that my right elbow is out like chicken wing coming down. Thats the fw only. I dont do that with my irons. My irons are 1* flat. I tried to get fitted for my irons last year. The fitter said that i needed to be 4* upright. If i am drawing the ball. Wouldn't that make it worst? I dont slice ....ever.I will try to pull the hands down.( drop the arms). My wedges are straight as well. Maybe swinging to hard?
TY,TY,TY for 3 yrs I have been trying to figure this out, especially pulling short irons and short pitches. Went out in my yard,I have 6 acres, after 2 attempts with A wedge badda bing. Now I ghave to practice up the iron scale.
Love this channel, always great info in a clear manner, thank you. I do have this issue and find when I am more on plane or coming from inside, strike tends be more of an issue. More thins and some fats. As i believe low point moves back when coming from inside.... Therefore, good idea for video... how to maintain ball first strike when fixing OTT and trying to be more on plane or from inside. Effect on low point
If pulls (not hooks or slices) are what I naturally do and go farther, why wouldn't I partice it? I'm 1-2 irons longer and 20-30 yards longer with a driver.
Good morning. Thanks Kerrod I played my last game of the season and I did well Thanks to this video, and others o your site. They ask me who ? So I give them your site. Thanks again for helping me play better. God bless you my friend. Bye bye Oscar . Canada
I get the arms thing...the video still did not address how NOT to start the downswing with the shoulders. I can drop arms, shallow the path, etc, etc...what I struggle with is how to keep from throwing my shoulders first. What say ye?
Omg this shot is destroying my game. Started about a month ago, and I cannot get rid of it. It’s basically made my game unplayable. About ready to quit the game because of it. I don’t even want to play.
Brilliant, I used to shank everything now I’m pulling I think it’s the bottom half that’s causing mine, I’ll defo be out tomorrow trying this new to me drill
Just to add to my previous comment. Today I worked on this move dropping the arms. I found for my irons it worked great but when I went to the driver it took some work to get the release timed properly So I think with driver it requires morpractice in timing the release. I found that releasing earlier in that downward move worked best. Thanks again…
I understand your solution to all of this, but dropping the arms etc usually creates hitting the ball fat or grounding the club before the ball. Which means it's not the only thing that needs to be worked on to rectify this. Personally I just haven't had enough success doing it the proper way to be confident enough that I'm going to hit the ball pure all the time without possibly hitting it fat.
I have been pulling my shots for some time now and have been offered several solutions which never worked. After watching this video, I went out on the golf course and, not only did it fix this problem, I was hitting longer and more accurately. Thanks, great video
It's all caused by swinging across the lap. In both descriptions the hands are faster than the hips, they get out in front of the hips, and as the hip turn speeds up-late-causing a swing path to cut across the lap. Knowing this is the easy part. Stopping it is the hard part.
Dear Kerrod: I have a question. You teached us the hand path should be more vertical during down swing. How should I do to make my shaft shallow when hand move down more vertical?
You make the cause very clear. The "pro" cure for this looks difficult to achieve. I'll have to give the drop and rotate technique a try on the range. I seem to get pulls when I try to swing too fast.
Dear Kerrod: I have a question. You teached us the hand path should be more vertical during down swing. How should I do to make my shaft shallow when hand move down more vertical?
In my experience, usually it is the right hip moving towards the ball that causes the out-to-in club path, resulting in pulls and slices. It is very evident in this video as you demonstrate good and bad swing paths. Please include that in your instruction........
This is me in a nutshell, both in pull tendency and my attempted approach to correct it (spearing the ball, and/or leaving the club at the top). This makes perfect sense and I can’t wait to try it. TY!
Insightful video. I do this sometimes. Another thing that helps is keeping that right shoulder tucked in and swing like this. Removes the problem almost always
Dear Kerrod:I have one question. You teached us the hand path should be more vertical during down swing. How should I do to make my shaft shallow when hand move down more vertical?
I’ve found that if I concentrate on keeping my right elbow in close to my body on the down swing it positions the club face right on target. Whenever I forget to pull my right elbow in I get inconsistent iron shots. Is this what you’re trying to show in this video? I have no formal coaching, just spend a lot of time at the range trying to see what works best for my height and swing and would love to hear if I’m on track with what your showing.
The technique you are describing was made famous by Ben Hogan. I actually made a video on it if you are interested: ruclips.net/video/ZWuvrVs364M/видео.html
@@kerrodgraygolf that explains it exactly for me. I started doing this in my swing because I found it easier to think just about my right elbow position and this minor tweak gave me big results. I think for a long time I over complicated my swing with all the different information out there and decided I needed to work on what works for me rather then what may works for someone else. Thanks for the great content.
I've been golfing for 15 years and have had this issue for a while. Definitely example #2 here. Like everyone else has said in the comments, this is outstanding explanation. Thank you for your help. Looking forward to hitting the range and working on correcting the issue.
Thank you. Thank you! I pull the ball exactly as you have stated. I go through periods when I play pulling the freakin ball. I am going to the range and practice dropping my arms. Excellent explanation and remedy.
I don't believe I have an out-to-in downswing as I tend to have a natural draw (lucky me). The longer the club though, the more likely I am to pull. I have always believed it's because I'm shorter (5'5", 165 cm) and that the lie angle needs to be flatter from a standard length/lie angle you buy clubs from the shelf. I will certainly watch how my hands travel and see how that goes for starters. I will also take in your drill as well. Thanks!
You have a rare talent and aptitude for the game. More importantly you know how to impart this wisdom and make it stick. I e seen several of your videos. They're all great but this one beats them all. Your how to not pull the ball to unique is a guide for exactly his to swing a club. Just AWESOME stuff.
This was a great video. I am 70 year old with 5 handicap but have started hitting left with all clubs and low smothering left with driver. Getting no height to speak of. This video feels right will go and practice tomorrow.

Glad it was helpful!
Many Thanks 👍
It really did that’s what I been practicing, dropping the club under the shoulders
I love these videos that were especially prepared for me. I have been fighting this issue lately and didn’t know how to fix it. Thank you so much.
Great to hear....Thanks a Lot
Keep trying... Best of luck👍
I've been trying to figure this out for 20 years , not one of the 25 pros that I've had lessons from has explained it this well. I just got done hitting balls, not one Pull
Thank you
Great video. Will try this at the range tomorrow. I think this will fix my pull problem. Is this the same for driver?
Exactly what I was wondering. The timing of the release with driver may take some extra work.
In all my years of watching instructional video's I have never seen anyone else explain the down swing in such an easy to understand way.
Thanks Mate 👍
Ditto 👍

Why is it when I tee the ball up (par 3's) I hit it straight, but when I'm on the fairway I tend to pull my ball more???
What's really frustrating is when you start pulling shots on the course and nothing you do can fix it during the round. Then you get on the range to work it out and not pull a single shot. For me, if a swing fault shows up during a round, that round is over.
One of the best videos explaining this fix. I was having this problem for more than a year and this explanation finally fixed it for me.
I like the way he indexes his video, and his advice, too. Been looking for a video about this down and around idea.
Outstanding 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I will re-watch this every day until it's etched on my prefrontal lobes 😅
Fingers crossed you get there soon 😂

I went from slicing the ball to pulling it so far left. I will have the occasional straight shot that starts left and fades back on line. Beautiful shots but cant do them consistently enough. And my baseball brain hasnt learned to slow down my swing yet
Damn you baseball brain! Sounds like you are making good progress, it will come in time.

Justin Rose does ... LOL! I was just going to say this looks like Rosie's pre-shot routine!
Brilliant, Kerrod
So 90 percent of your video is you repeatedly showing the a bad swings
Thanks for the feedback but change needs context for why it should be done.
When you do the drill, what's driving the drop in the club? The left hip centering? Am I centering, falling into the left side?
Excellent description of the cause of the pull. Breaking the swing down as described has minimized my pulls. Thank you.
You make the cause very clear. The "pro" cure for this looks difficult to achieve. I'll have to give the drop and rotate technique a try on the range. I seem to get pulls when I try to swing too fast.

I don't think I'm coming over top, my swing feels on plane but my chest is aligned to the left at impact. So maybe a timing issue
Love the video's but wow are they wordy.
I’ve played Joondaloop when I was in the Navy… awesome course!
That's awesome! Joondalup is a fantastic course. Glad you had the chance to play it.
Could club butt to ball also cause me to hook.I feel my right hand wanting to turn, go under the grip with right palm facing skyward on the downswing
Gained weight raising waist from 36" to 40" - would thaty also influence a changed swing to come through around the body more to the left?
Too much time wasted on what you shouldn’t do. Otherwise pretty good.
Thanks for the feedback! Happy to help! 🙌
In my experience, usually it is the right hip moving towards the ball that causes the out-to-in club path, resulting in pulls and slices. It is very evident in this video as you demonstrate good and bad swing paths. Please include that in your instruction........
This concept helped me break my pulling funk… for now 😅
Let's hope the funks get further apart!
Great explanation. Thank you. I am pretty sure that this is my issue
Glad it helped
This is exactly what I have to do. Everything you say that’s wrong is what I’m doing
By far one of the best videos … short and simple ! Thank You
Glad you like it!
Thanks 👍
This is me in a nutshell, both in pull tendency and my attempted approach to correct it (spearing the ball, and/or leaving the club at the top). This makes perfect sense and I can’t wait to try it. TY!
Insightful video. I do this sometimes. Another thing that helps is keeping that right shoulder tucked in and swing like this. Removes the problem almost always
Dear Kerrod:I have one question. You teached us the hand path should be more vertical during down swing. How should I do to make my shaft shallow when hand move down more vertical?
This is right up my street. Then you thank you. 👍🥃🇨🇦
You're welcome!
That's my exact problem! Can't wait to get to the driving range! Thank you!
The 3rd pull is “ oh my gosh I’m out of sequence” . Great explanation
That's great to hear that focusing on your right elbow position has made such a big difference in your swing! Keep up the great work 👍
I.e., be careful if you try to implement Ganka’s teaching.
Your instruction is spot on and easy to understand, thanks KG this helps me a lot
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the comment 👍
Very good explanation. Gonna try this and see if it helps me. Thanks.
Thanks very good tip. Practice, Practice... that is what I need to do.
Best golf channel on youtube IMO
Thanks a Lot 👍
Nailed me m8.. on it well done thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks 👍
Good vid. Your “bad” shots are better than my best shots 😢
I've been golfing for 15 years and have had this issue for a while. Definitely example #2 here. Like everyone else has said in the comments, this is outstanding explanation. Thank you for your help. Looking forward to hitting the range and working on correcting the issue.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you found it so helpful. Let me know how you get on with it.
This is exactly what i do.
Thank you. Thank you! I pull the ball exactly as you have stated. I go through periods when I play pulling the freakin ball. I am going to the range and practice dropping my arms. Excellent explanation and remedy.
Great job!
Same thing with driver?
I don't believe I have an out-to-in downswing as I tend to have a natural draw (lucky me). The longer the club though, the more likely I am to pull. I have always believed it's because I'm shorter (5'5", 165 cm) and that the lie angle needs to be flatter from a standard length/lie angle you buy clubs from the shelf.
I will certainly watch how my hands travel and see how that goes for starters. I will also take in your drill as well.
Thanks!
Your club face is aiming left of target at impact. Check your grip
You have a rare talent and aptitude for the game. More importantly you know how to impart this wisdom and make it stick. I e seen several of your videos. They're all great but this one beats them all. Your how to not pull the ball to unique is a guide for exactly his to swing a club. Just AWESOME stuff.
Appreciate it! Thank you!
This was a great video. I am 70 year old with 5 handicap but have started hitting left with all clubs and low smothering left with driver. Getting no height to speak of. This video feels right will go and practice tomorrow.
Keep it up, Ross! Thank you! Keep me updated and Good luck!
