Fun reaction to a movie I've always enjoyed. Thanks for sharing it :) This may be of interest to y'all: Back in the late 80s, the comic book version of Mystique was in a committed, decades-long relationship with another woman, a mutant named Irene. Because in those days mainstream comics still weren't supposed to say that, it was all subtle hints and subtext, but even a clueless straight boy like myself could see it if one was paying attention. And then Irene got killed (sacrificed herself, save the world, the usual). Probably because Blade isn't really considered a traditional superhero with superpowers, he's just a vampire with marital arts skills. Plus the Xmen are much more well known in the superhero genre compared to Blade. Also, he's a loner and not part of a team like the Xmen or the Avengers.
Blade didn’t really start anything off superhero wise. He was part of the current (at the time) vampire hero movie franchise, but no one relates him to a super hero. Most people don’t even realise he is marvel. The movies were fun though, but X-men gave us the marvel superhero franchise.
@@PaladinesAngel I feel like people who don't realize he's Marvel didn't pay attention to the huge, red, full-screen MARVEL logo at the start of the movie.
In retrospect, one of the areas where this franchise struggled in was the juggling of many characters. This proved to be unfortunate especially for Cyclops, who was very underutilized. Fans were also disappointed in the omission of favorites such as Gambit, who is Rogue's most notable love interest. Also, it became clear that Fox didn't give a crap about maintaining some continuity in these films. Still, it captures the unique concept quite well, which distinguishes it from all other superhero franchises.
The line from Storm to Toad was originally written with the exact same words, but in a much better delivery. Originally, she gives the first line: "You know what happens to a toad that gets hit by lightning?" Then she hits him with the bolt, sending him flying away. The second line: "Same thing that happens to everything else" she quipped to herself as she was walking away. It made it a much more "action-hero-y" one-liner and just.....worked better. I don't know who changed the delivery, if that was her choice or the director, but.....it was a dumb change.
Yes, I read that Joss Whedon (who doctored the script) said she was directed incorrectly for that moment, because it should have been a sarcastic toss-off line said after the fact, not as a serious line.
so we've got psychics, laser-eyes, controlling the FUCKING weather & all these other extraordinary abilities but somehow the most marketable character in the franchise is the dude with knives that come out of his hands.
Love the reaction mixed in with the intelligent commentaries as always, ladies! I loved the Marvel movie approach of introducing characters and building the universe slowly, but this movie did wonderfully with combining several backstories and plot, as you said. Funny how the "D" istinguished "C" ompetition could not seem to reach the same level.
My favorite mutant is Wolverine. I find him so fascinating, and I love that moment near the beginning that reveals so much, when she asks him if it hurts when his claws come out, and he says, "Every time." If I were a mutant.... hmmm.... I don't know. I think Mystique's shape-shifting is really cool. But at the same time she may never really get to be herself if she's always changing her form. Does she even know who she is or wants to be? It's interesting. I'd also love to fly, or be able to learn anything in an instant (absorb knowledge, whether it's languages, or self defense moves, or how to instantly know how to fly a plane, etc.). That would be amazing.
Love that you're doing these! In terms of my favourite mutant, aside from Wolverine I really enjoy Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler who you'll meet soon, great character. As for powers I'd want, Kurt's would be pretty great actually, or Storm's because she's got the best strength-without-side-effects. Side note, her accent is a mess throughout the franchise; the character is African but they never seem to decide to fully commit to an accent.
Long time comic nerd here: This movie does not at all follow the comic book cannon, yet it NAILED the spirit of the comics better than the comics in many ways. My favorite change is they made Xavier's actually feel like a school instead of just a super hero secret headquarters.
Historically, in the comics and movies, messing with children Wolverine has bonded with is a bad idea on the level of hurting John Wick's dog or talking badly about Eminem's daughter.

My favorite mutant is easily Nightcrawler. Both in the comics and the movies. He's such a great character with such a cool design and such a cool ability.
they botched it in the movies, in the comics he is the smoothest character of all, the devil with a silver tongue. And in the movies he is an awkward religious fanatic.
13:48 - Magneto can only manypulate electro-magnetic fields, which means he can only affect Iron, Cobalt and Nickle and their alloys (As those are the only 3 metals that are magnetic). Titanium, for example, which is a very strong metal to use to build stuff out of, could not be manipulated by Magneto; allong with a vast list of other non-magnetic metals. (Of course, since Iron is a very common metal, one of the most versatile, it is found in almost anything that humans make which has metal parts, so it is difficult go around it and it is part of what makes Magneto such a dangerous mutant) 20:19 - The moment I saw in theatres, I said: "IT CROAKS!"...! It was such an easy line to find and, strangely enough, if you watch the Commentary track on the DVD of this movie, one of the producers talking to the director comes up with that very same line to the director's distress at wondering why he had not thought of it.
"Full strength" Magneto (i.e. in the comics) _can_ manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum but the movies have wisely nerfed him so he "only" has control over ferromagnetic metals like iron, cobalt, nickel, dysprosium, gadolinium etc. (and their alloys though fun fact, in the real world by no means all alloys of ferromagnetic metals are themselves ferromagnetic. Also in the real world, there's paramagnetism and diamagnetism too, which together mean that in a strong enough magnetic field _many_ materials are magnetic). I say "wisely" because if he really could manipulate electromagnetic fields as you suggest (and that ability was consistently applied) then he'd be pretty much unstoppable since electromagnetism underpins so much of the world around us. With control of electromagnetic fields he could remotely disassemble _any_ molecule for instance or just "switch off" any being with a nervous system (those being electromagnetic). Not to mention he could create/control lightning, massive civilisation destroying electromagnetic pulses, all forms of light (so laser blasts like Cyclops, jam radio communications etc.), nuclear fusion and _maybe_ even create black holes. Making sure his chess set is plastic would be the very least of our worries in other words :).
There is a trilogy in these films here. There are things I love about all of them yet they aren’t perfect and maybe that’s what I love about them. When I was young, I loved Storm so much. She had such a backstory, it’s amazing. Though if I had to choose a power, I would have to go with Magneto. Most anything has metal of some sort in it. He he. Also, I much prefer Rebecca Romjin ( then Stamos) played Mystique in such an amazing way that she makes me not even consider Lawrence in the role. Sorry for going on so much lol. Rest In Peace Mr. Donner, you brought comics to life in a way no others could. Thank you, Superman.
Back when this came out it was a movie that made me an X-Men fan. Nowadays when I look at the film it's okay or just subpar X-Men film. I hope the movies in the future MCU lineup can be more accurate.
i just got the joke, when Storm says do you know what happens to a frog gets struck by lightning, the answer is He gains the Powers of Thor, in the comics there is Throg, a Frog with a little cape and helmet and Mjolnir and he is WORTHY, so that was Kevin Feige who worked on this movie slipping in a Frog Thor joke/reference
To think that an Australian BROADWAY performer (dancer and singer) would play one of the most iconic Marvel heroes of all time. They could not have made a more perfect choice to cast Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
I don't have a single favorite mutant, but I have a top 5: Gambit, Beast, Nightcrawler, Storm, and Kitty Pryde. As for what power I would want? The ability to manipulate sound waves. It sounds weird, but it's really versatile. You can do a lot with it.
Blade (98) , is the one that started the “cool” comic book movies. Check it out if you haven’t. Question, is any movie that Jessa have not seen and Alex has?
I always assumed she was doing a weird half-impersonation of Storm's accent from the old X-men cartoon. There are a couple of weird voices in this first film, Ian Mckellan goes weirdly half-american on some lines which is something they clearly give up on in the other films and let him do his thing.
I feel like Magneto would’ve just made the bullet follow the guy if he moved I can’t find the info but I’m certain the toad struck by lightning line was meant as a reverse pay off. Toad was supposed to use it as a catchphrase (maybe struck by lightning wasn’t for every time), and then Storm repeats it with an answer
Looking forward to your reaction to X2.If you're a fan of Mystique, you'll _love_ X2. She gives the antagonist the most epic, badass troll I've ever seen. It goes by fast, but you'll know it when you see it.
@@bottlecaps2741 Well in one series of comics, Adam Warlock on a counter earth dies trying to protect it and is crucified, but then resurrects from the dead (as one of Warlock's aspects is when he dies, he's always resurrected again at some point). He was originally called 'him', but then took the name Adam Warlock later. He's an obvious analogy for Jesus, but it's not like that hasn't been done plenty of times (Clearly characters such as Aslan, Gandalf, and Superman are all analogies too). If you go to some really, really old comics Marvel did, they stick pretty literally to the biblical context for the most part, he's the son of Yahweh. So he's a god entity, not a mutant. They have some cool lore they tied to him in Marvel comics (like Dr. Doom having splinters from the True Cross; the one Jesus was crucified on; in case he faces Dracula. And almost everyone knows about the Spear of Destiny which stabbed Jesus, and has the ability to affect Fate itself.

Storm was supposed to be from Africa. Unfortunately Halle Berry couldn’t pull off the accent. Fun fact in the comics Storm was married to T’Challa. While I do love this movie I didn’t care for the Rogue’s storyline. Rogue is much cooler in the X-Men animated series.
Comics, too. Her pwers in the comics and cartoon were pretty damn cool. Flight, super strength power absorption by touch, Rogue was a powerful beauty of a Southern belle!
Poor Halle Berry just had bad luck with comic book movies. If she’s not too scarred by it she should come back though! I think she’d fare much better in the current superhero market.
Magneto is what we call an anti-villain. His intentions are noble: to stop the persecution of mutants, especially since he's already experienced the WORST persecution during the Holocaust. His methods to reach those goals, however, are questionable at best, morally bankrupt at worst. These are the best villains imo, because being evil for evil's sake is, well, pedestrian. Villains you can empathize with are much more compelling. Also, the response to Storm's question about Toad should have been "IT CROAKS" LUL
I fucking LOVE the X-Men movies (X2 & DOFP, being in my favorite comic movies period) and this one is right up there. Apparently, the thought for the movies (at least the first couple) was to go for the Sci-Fi approach first over the traditional superhero approach. Example, focusing of the political/social strife and struggles of mutants along with the warring views of Charles and Erik.

I will say I think the delivery for the frog lightning line was more the issue. Maybe its because I've watched enough Whedon to imagine it delivered well by like Buffy for example. Whedon did script doctor work on this movie to make it funnier and the Frog line was one of them.
Love your reactions to the Xmen movies especially post-Disney. And knowing that the xmens are to represent marginalized groups, which some people don’t always get it right away.
I love the X-Men movies, too! Not all of them are good, but I don't hold that against the whole film franchise. I grew up on the 70's/80's Superman movies and the 80's/90's Batman movies, so I got used to the pattern set by these movies -- the first two are increasing good, the next two are increasing bad. In my opinion, the good X-Men team movies are not only really good but get increasingly better; the Wolverine solo movies after a rocky start get exponentially better from movie to movie; and the Deadpool movies were great from the start. If you do watch more of the X-Men movies, you can watch them all if you want, but you're not missing anything if you skip the last two team movies and the first Wolverine movie.
Yes, she played the character for the first three X-movies. She's the only member of the cast to go from X-Men movies to Star Trek as well (as she's in Star Trek Discovery and Strange New Worlds) rather than the other way around as was the case with Sir Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen (who had been in one episode of TNG).
Blade was the real kickoff comic book movie to make it mainstream, but X-Men picked up from its success. If you ladies haven't seen it, you must! I do really enjoy the first two X-men films, but the third fumbles so hard they had to reboot the whole thing. 🤣🤣🤣

Technically Stan Lee made the X-men so that everyone could feel like they could become a super hero. And that for everyone who didn’t fit in had someone to identify with. It wasn’t until like the late 80’s when writers made it more like a civil rights thing.
The X-men are a secret team, nobody used to know about them, like people know who the Fantastic Four and the Avengers are, they changed that in the Deadpool 2 movie, and the Dark Phoenix movie, in those movies the news and the general public knew about the X-men
Thing is, Magneto's not wrong. Given human nature his scenario is a lot more probable than Charles. He just doesn't know when to stop. Also the original inspirations for Professor X and Magneto were Martin Luther King and Malcolm X respectively which I consider unfair to Malcolm
To me the problem with Magneto's position is, it's self-fulfilling. Even if he IS wrong, his approach will make him right (because he becomes the hostile mutant that turns people as a whole against mutants). At least Xavier's way _could_ work and doesn't _inevitably_ lead to wholesale violence. (but then i'm pretty sceptical of "human nature" arguments to begin with - hate is almost always learned IMO)
Magneto's plan in this one wasnt even all that evil. He didnt know that his turning people into mutants would kill them, and he didnt originally plan for there to be any loss of life (he didnt know using the machine would drain and potentially kill him until his first trial run). The problem with Magneto is that as all these negative factors stack up turning a good plan into a bad one, he just plows forward with it anyway. It's like they say in the movie, if he was so righteous it would be him strapped into the machine and not Rogue.
Professor X and Magneto were not based on Malcom X and Martin Luther King. That is what they eventually became by Chris Claremont after Stan Lee left the series.

Love these films I really hope you watch the other ones too! You are both just joy to watch 😂❤️.
Rouge gets her full power from Mrs marvel and that is how Mrs marvel later becomes captain marvel
i think you got it backwards? doesn't Rogue suck Carol's powers out of her permanently?
Wasn't Toad originally meant to constantly quip with things a toad could do and that was the primary reason for Storm's quip to him?
Yes, I read that Joss Whedon (who doctored the script) said she was directed incorrectly for that moment, because it should have been a sarcastic toss-off line said after the fact, not as a serious line.
my favorite comic character of all time is Magneto and both actors have done a magnificent job as him
Cops: "Put your hands over your head. . . now!"
Magneto: "Bitch, please. . ."
I love the cast! 😎
Storm is my fave mutant ever. And her powers are what I would love. :) X2 is also awesome.
magneto's sass is unmatched
so we've got psychics, laser-eyes, controlling the FUCKING weather & all these other extraordinary abilities but somehow the most marketable character in the franchise is the dude with knives that come out of his hands.
The actor who played the trucker who dropped Rouge off was the voice of the Beast in the X-men cartoon.
My favorite mutant is Wolverine. I find him so fascinating, and I love that moment near the beginning that reveals so much, when she asks him if it hurts when his claws come out, and he says, "Every time."
If I were a mutant....
In the comics Storm can do some crazy things, with the big side effect that the weather changes with her mood.
Long time comic nerd here: This movie does not at all follow the comic book cannon, yet it NAILED the spirit of the comics better than the comics in many ways. My favorite change is they made Xavier's actually feel like a school instead of just a super hero secret headquarters.
Can not wait for you to watch X-2
Hands down my favourite X-man movie.
Historically, in the comics and movies, messing with children Wolverine has bonded with is a bad idea on the level of hurting John Wick's dog or talking badly about Eminem's daughter.
I found your channel a few days ago and I have just binged watched nearly all your videos. (That didn't sound creepy at all in my head, but seeing it in words... ugh! heavy sigh.) What I mean to say is, you girls are pretty cool. I enjoy your wit and your banter and your reactions are epic. I'm a fan. Hope you don't mind if I stick around and see what other movies you watch. Thanks for your channel.
Omg. It's about people who's mutant abilities were activated by something. X men are people with an activated X Gene hence the name.
So ready for X2!
I love the Rogue and Logan bond so much. (And his bitchy banter with Scott is hilarious.)
Oh, I love this movie. I saw it 3 times when it came out in theatres in 2000, once entirely by myself, just to see Hugh Jackman again.
(Of course, since Iron is a very common metal, one of the most versatile, it is found in almost anything that humans make which has metal parts, so it is difficult go around it and it is part of what makes Magneto such a dangerous mutant)
20:19 - The moment I saw in theatres, I said: "IT CROAKS!"...!
Toad is played by Ray Park who played Darth Maul in the Episode I movie, the Phantom Menace
I'm glad you all are watching this! Now you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning!
i just got the joke, when Storm says do you know what happens to a frog gets struck by lightning, the answer is
He gains the Powers of Thor, in the comics there is Throg, a Frog with a little cape and helmet and Mjolnir and he is WORTHY, so that was Kevin Feige who worked on this movie slipping in a Frog Thor joke/reference
To think that an Australian BROADWAY performer (dancer and singer) would play one of the most iconic Marvel heroes of all time. They could not have made a more perfect choice to cast Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
If you forget the cartoon theme, try humming the chorus of Whitney Houston's" "I'm Your Baby Tonight"
Daaaahadahdahrah dadadarhadah… I got Waaaaaaay way into that song intro….
I love how Halle Berry took not even a light pass at an Kenyan accent for Storm and just went vaguely British
I always assumed she was doing a weird half-impersonation of Storm's accent from the old X-men cartoon. There are a couple of weird voices in this first film, Ian Mckellan goes weirdly half-american on some lines which is something they clearly give up on in the other films and let him do his thing.
I feel like Magneto would’ve just made the bullet follow the guy if he moved
I can’t find the info but I’m certain the toad struck by lightning line was meant as a reverse pay off. Toad was supposed to use it as a catchphrase (maybe struck by lightning wasn’t for every time), and then Storm repeats it with an answer
Thanks for the reaction video guys; if you enjoyed this one, wait until you guys watch X-Men 2: X-Men United.
Mystique is played by Rebecca Romaine. When this movie was filmed Jennifer Lawrence was still learning her ABC's.
Looking forward to your reaction to X2.If you're a fan of Mystique, you'll _love_ X2. She gives the antagonist the most epic, badass troll I've ever seen. It goes by fast, but you'll know it when you see it.
You know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing as everything else. It croaks.
"Jesus is at your school?"
Who's to say that Jesus wasn't a mutant?
I think he was in marvel comic history.
I just started this series on my channel too, Loving it so far! keep it up y'all!
I know X-Men came out first, but when I see Magneto, I hear Gandalf..... LOL
Clicked so fast omg 💨
I enjoy all the X-men movies Hugh Jackman does wolverine so well like I’ve seen the x-men cartoons and wolverine is my favorite x-men then it’s Gambit, Storm, Beast, night crawler and rogue
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
I love the original mystique she was awesome
So not even upset that you have never seen this ALEX…. But so happy that I get to join so now I don’t care yaaaaaay
Hi ladies, I loved the reactions, I have the first two x men movies from the original and newer cast movies, I didn't bother buying the rest, I prefer this Mystique and agree with what you said about her character, proud to be a mutant so why not look who you are! thanks ladies, be safe and take care, please watch the 2nd movie! :p
18:50 The blonde bombshell thing is actually more "Jennifer Lawrence became one of Hollywood's biggest stars in between movies and has a LOT more leverage now to skip hours of Make-Up if she wants to..."
That... doesn't really make any sense. You're gonna need some evidence for that.
If you want to see more old school super hero films, I recommend the Sam Raime Spider-Man films and the Tim Burton Batman films.

I think she’d fare much better in the current superhero market.
the truck driver was voices of x-men 90s cartoon
Magneto is what we call an anti-villain. His intentions are noble: to stop the persecution of mutants, especially since he's already experienced the WORST persecution during the Holocaust. His methods to reach those goals, however, are questionable at best, morally bankrupt at worst. These are the best villains imo, because being evil for evil's sake is, well, pedestrian. Villains you can empathize with are much more compelling.
Also, the response to Storm's question about Toad should have been "IT CROAKS" LUL
Love mystique
Will you be reacting to the rest of the X-men movies ?
We really want to but there are a lot of movies, so tbh it depends on how well this one does!
@@jessaandalexwatch ok thank you .
Would love to see more :)

Yeah, Buffy could have pulled it off
The cop with the bullet on his head could not move because he was wearing metal objects.
It's also the name of the main team under Xavier.
Didn't Rebecca Romijn play Mystique in this film? Or did I just miss that acknowledgement?
Yes, she played the character for the first three X-movies.
She's the only member of the cast to go from X-Men movies to Star Trek as well (as she's in Star Trek Discovery and Strange New Worlds) rather than the other way around as was the case with Sir Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen (who had been in one episode of TNG).
I so wish ororo would've had an accent throughout the movies
Blade was the real kickoff comic book movie to make it mainstream, but X-Men picked up from its success. If you ladies haven't seen it, you must!
I do really enjoy the first two X-men films, but the third fumbles so hard they had to reboot the whole thing. 🤣🤣🤣
Shhhhh, we’re not telling Alex yet how bad that one is. 😂😭😭

Omg jessa don’t be dumb 🤣🤣🤣
Technically Stan Lee made the X-men so that everyone could feel like they could become a super hero. And that for everyone who didn’t fit in had someone to identify with.
It wasn’t until like the late 80’s when writers made it more like a civil rights thing.
The X-men are a secret team, nobody used to know about them, like people know who the Fantastic Four and the Avengers are, they changed that in the Deadpool 2 movie, and the Dark Phoenix movie, in those movies the news and the general public knew about the X-men
The Xmen cartoon theme is Dah dah dah dah dah dha dah dahdahdahdahdah dahdahdahdahdah;......dah dah.....dahadahdahdahdah
nailed it
Magneto's plan to mutate everyone should have worked. Cus as we all know conversion therapy is such a good idea.
The X-MEN are the one thing marvel doesn't have a plan for once the X-MEN and the fantastic 4 show up the real marvel universe starts
