Shout out to the truck driver! For those that don't know, the guy playing the truck driver is actually George Buza, the voice actor for "Beast" of the original X-Men 1992 animated series! Even though his role here is very minor, George Buza had said in an interview that his experience on the set was highly positive and encouraging. Bryan Singer (the film director) phoned him out for his audition and told George that they wouldn't even be making the movie were it not for the massive and unexpected success of the X-Men animated series, so having him for this cameo role was a small token of his gratitude for his work as Beast.
*BONUS THING YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN: George Buza was also one of the very few actors at the time that actually KNEW alot about the comics around when the X-men animated series was first being put into production. It's rumored that during his audition he initially wanted to be Wolverine, but he instead was offered the role of Beast which he took immediately because he knew he couldn't pass up an opportunity to play an X-men character.

FOX also excelled in the cast as they chose major league actors who fit their vision that is mentioned above. Some fun facts about this movie: Hugh Jackman's terrified reactions when he meets Ian McKellen are real; he was told Magneto was going to tear open the train car, and assumed that meant ripping off the door, not tearing the entire car in half. They did this using hydraulics, and had to rush in with fire extinguishers after the shot because sparks were falling everywhere and catching on fire, with some of the actors almost getting burned. Jackman had to look back at the footage and study his movements and reactions for matching in subsequent shots, because he was basically panic-dancing from being scared out of his mind. The scene is covered in detail in the "making of" documentary. Also, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos accidentally kicked the senator for real in the helicopter scene. Also, Ian McKellen actually declined the role of Gandalf because he was busy filming this; director Bryan Singer changed the filming schedule so McKellen could finish his scenes first at the end of 1999, and then travel to New Zealand in January 2000.

When this came out it was largely held as the best superhero movie to date. And it mostly holds up. The acting from Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellum, Hugh Jackman and Anna Paquin is stellar. The dialogue may be a little cheesy but we are also comparing it to the Avengers, that is a very high benchmark to meet, and many people still expected dialogue that you might see in a comic, like one liners.

Man, I fought SO HARD to get into this film. I'd given up on acting, then saw they were making this. I've collected X-Men comics since I could read, and always had a strong connection to Cyclops, so when I heard about this, I started trying to contact someone, ANYONE involved in the production. I sent email and snailmail to Marvel, Fox, Brian Singer, Stan Lee, Patrick Stewart... everyone I could think of... and Cyclops was the last part cast, so I kept hoping. But then they cast Marsden.
He was adequate, but I like to think I would have done better. With my history of stage work, my ability to perform using my body rather than my eyes is better than a film or tv actor would have, and I know that character as well as I know myself.
What a joy it would have been, it would have given me so much exposure, it could have launched my career. Cyclops was a smaller role, so I wouldn't have had to carry the film. I would have been in a position to learn from some of the finest actors in the world, Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan, to say nothing of Hugh Jackman.

The dynamic between Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) and Sir Patrick Stewart (Professor X) is amazing. Since doing the 'X-men' films, the two have been the Epitome of Friendship Goals. They have done plays on Broadway together, and McKellen (who has long been a figure of gay equality in Great Britain before his fame as Gandalf or Magneto) even officiated at Stewart's wedding to Sunny Ozell in 2013. They had known each other about 40 years before 'X-Men' and just have become BFFs since then. How much? Look up their names together...you'll find pictures that are heart-warming to the nth degree (including a couple of full-blown kisses on the mouth!).
Just prior to being cast as Logan/Wolverine, Hugh Jackman was making his mark in the theater. He was playing Curly in the National Theater revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma' in London. The show was captured on video for TV and is available. He has since done other musicals on stage ('The Boy From Oz' playing the late Australian pop star and songwriter Peter Allen, winning a Tony for Best Actor, and currently in the B'way revival of 'The Music Man' as Professor Harold Hill) and on-screen (as Jean Valjean in 'Les Miserables' earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and 'The Greatest Showman' playing P.T. Barnum).
The actress who played Mystique was Rebecca Romijn, who was married to John Stamos (Uncle Jesse of 'Full House') at the time. Currently, she is on the Paramount Plus series 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' playing Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley aka Number One, the First Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise. I'll save who replaced her as Mystique in 'X-Men: First Class' until later...hint: the new actress won an Oscar, and tripped on her way to the stage to accept it!

There has been the Scott/Logan conflict for years. It was even there in the 90's animated show. Throw the love triangle stories in there with Jean and they got intense. However, they were not always at odds. Much like the Tony/Steve dynamic of the MCU, they were at their best when working together, balancing each other out. Logan respected him as a leader because he was an awesome leader and a tactical genius. Scott was annoyed often by Logan, but knew his experience, perspective and skill were unsurpassed. They could have done something neat in these Fox X-Men films. Unfortunately they made it the Wolverine show. Cyclops was made into an annoyed, stiff, chad that everyone hated. Such a waste, especially considering James Marsden played him.

"why? Why did you make this movie?" Hugh Jackman, Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellan were all so brilliant in their roles, which was kind of a blessing and a curse. - this was the first modern comic book movie adaptation that showed the superhero genre can be taken seriously and with gravitas. There would be no Spider-Man by Sony or the MCU without this movie.
    - the original comics were made during the civil rights movement so a lot of themes about tolerance, differences, etc reflected the times
    - Hugh joined 3 weeks into shooting and this launched his Hollywood career
    - some comic nerds hated the fact that Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto were the leads and the other mutants were supporting roles, but if you are gonna make a feature film (and not a TV series), you can only follow a few characters before it gets overstuffed. The writers took a page from The Matrix and let Wolverine be the audience's eyes (like Neo found the real world) as they entered the world of X-men and the conflicts
    - Bryan Singer, being gay himself, was and still is the perfect writer-director for this project, having directed masterpieces like The Usual Suspects and crafting themes of societal difference to keep this comic book story grounded (until he got canceled by Hollywood recently for being creepy).
    - James Marsden was suggested from his previous movie Gossip costume designer to audition and he went in 4 times for Cyclops. His friends from home mailed truckloads of comic books to him in LA because he asked them "who is this Cyclops?" before auditioning. Then he had to wear platform shoes for some scenes because he is 5'10" compared to the 6' Famke who is Jean Grey and the 6'2" Hugh.
    - Ian McKellen filmed Lord Of the Rings right after this film. Legend for being in two back-to-back successful film franchises.

Since you're open minded to animation, I highly recommend the X-Men Evolution series that has real good character development. Also, the motion comic for Astonishing X-Men is a fantastic way to experience one of my fav X-Men storylines.

Fun Fact: In the Statue of Liberty scene when they find Mystique on the ground, the security guard is the legendary David Hayter, he wrote the screen play for the film and voices the most iconic video game character in history "Solid Snake."

@@claytoncourtney1309Yeah, I don't understand that either. This movie was a lot different in tone than what was common among blockbusters up until that point. That's the movie version of how Rogue got her hair streak. She actually got it from Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel. That's why she could fly and had super strength in the cartoon, she drained Danvers completely, put her in a coma for 20 years or so and kept her powers minus the energy blasts.

Creating protagonist and more importantly antagonists with genuinely appreciable points of view make for the best conflict. I can say without spoiling anything that as you go on with these you will appreciate the depth of this and the choices made. Great stuff underneath the flash. You'll enjoy Hugh Jackman/s work with Wolverine. He's a great character and a better actor to portray the part you will probably never find. The interplay and relationship between the characters of Xavier and Magneto are similarly complex and deep.

It's sad that this franchise is remembered with such animosity cos it all started right here. 1978's Superman and 1989's Batman were kind of isolated auteur projects that no one really capitalised on. This was the where _the formula_ began. X-Men 2, I still consider a highlight among this two decades long comicbook phenomenon.

      @@DeltaAssaultGaming
That’s a separate point. They are better films (well actually - my preference is for _Batman Returns_ ) but they’re more indicative of those particular directors’ works than what became the current comicbook film. _X-Men_ is the one that gets the ball rolling with lore and world building and ensemble casting and genuine interest in the source material and little carrots that set up subsequent chapters - all the tricks that can be expanded into the larger money printing machine.
It’s funny you mentioned it actually because one of the things I find so stifling about the Marvelfication of cinema is that it does squeeze the director’s personality out of the project, so you end up with this assembly line of flatpack IKEA movies that, yes, are functional pieces of furniture but they sort of become indistinguishable from one another.

No Rogue absorbs Captain Marvel’s abilities in the comics and puts her in a coma when she was with the Brotherhood of mutants under Mystique’s tutelage. Mystique adopted Rogue but then Rogue left the Brotherhood after she saw what Mystique used her to get Carol’s powers. Rogue joins the X-men afterwards. All this is in the animated series.

A distinction worth knowing is that natural mutation can be influenced by mutation, but natural selection and mutation are two entirely different concepts.
_Mutations_ are random and constantly occur all the time. Anything that changes someone's DNA could cause mutations, so eating different things, being in different environments, etc. People get mutations all throughout their lives, but most are quite insignificant.
_Natural selection_ itself doesn't create mutations. It is merely the process of deciding which mutations live on (heredity, survival of the fittest, etc.)
In the X-Men universe, there are some people born with the x-gene, which is what cause people to manifest different powers. Some could be different at birth, but most mutants 'activate' around puberty.

Fun Fact: the original Wolverine was created with the idea that the metal claws were part of his gloves. It was John Byrne that changed it to coming from his knuckles.
Byrne's "head canon" was that Logan actually found popping his claws very pleasurable; symbolic of something ... else...

The Age of Apocalypse, someone goes back in time and kills Xavier and Magneto takes on the mantle that would have been Charles' role. Its an interesting dichotomy between the two and they honestly got two perfect actors to portray it.
