    Vasquez and Ripley are like the posterchildren for why it's funny when studios blame Films flopping on "Audiences not being ready for badass female characters."

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 3 года назад +4

      I mean, that would be true if there were only 4 movies produced in the last 40 years. Name some successful "badass female" leads other than Ripley, Vasquez, and Sarah Connor. While studio buck-passing is a big problem, audience misogyny is not imaginary; look at the horrific abuse over Ghostbusters and Captain Marvel, etc., etc.

      @@michaelccozens
      Ripley, Vasquez, and Sarah were ORIGINAL characters. Not remakes of a previously existing people.
      You asked for other examples.
      Loooong before the new marvel movies, Wonder Woman had a TV series in the 1970’s which was based on the comic book. It starred Lynda Carter. Talk to anyone who was raised in that generation, they were most likely fans of the show, or at least well aware of it.
      Then there was the TV series “The Bionic Woman”, also from the 1970’s. It was a spin off from the show “The Six Million Dollar Man”. So it wasn’t a remake since Jamie Sommers (played by Lindsay Wagner) was a completely separate character from Steve Austin.
      If I’m not mistaken, they had cross over episodes where they appeared in each other’s shows. They were the first human cyborgs. Though unlike the terminators, they were mostly human, with some bionic implants which enhances certain abilities such as strength, speed, hearing, etc.
      Xena Warrior Princess was from the mid 90’s. The name alone is badass. That girl could take on an army of men all by herself. 😁
      Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), I believe came out in 2000. Kind of an “Indiana Jones” type of film, but again, she was her own unique character.
      Kill Bill (starring the legendary Uma) came out in like 2003. Pretty much a female killing machine out for revenge.
      I must say, as a woman who looooved the original Ghostbusters, I was extremely upset when they cast the new ones as women. Here’s why: when you are doing a remake of an iconic classic, try to keep it as true to the original as possible. Don’t use it as an opportunity to push an agenda and make it political (race, gender, etc). That’s why the new Ghostbusters flopped. Us fans were CLEARLY aware of why it was being done that way and THAT’S why we all rolled our eyes, sighed, and pretty much hated it. 🙄
      We enjoy original characters and don’t like it when you mess with them. Create new ones, be original, and if they’re good, we don’t care what gender they are. We’ll just fall in love with the characters, period.
      I find it hilarious that people get upset when you don’t let them push their agendas on you and then accuse you of being awful for not accepting the agenda they push. Just laughable. 😆

      @@nowthatisawesome5431 You literally have no example past 2003. Sit down. Audience misogyny is 100% a thing, and you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. All you have to do is look at female characters that do nearly identical things to male characters to see it. When a female character does it, "mary sue" but when a male character does it, he's a total badass that definitely earned the moment.

      Emily Blunt and Millicent Simmonds in A Quiet Place Parts I & II.
      Lupita Nyong’o in Us.
      Samara Weaving in Ready or Not.
      Toni Collette in Heredity.
      Sophie Thatcher in Prospect.
      Noomi Rapace in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series.
      The examples of compelling female movie characters are countless. The reason they are compelling is because they are engaging as individuals first and foremost. To place an overemphasis on lead roles being female and offering little to no characterization is doing a disservice. That’s not being inclusive or showing representation. It’s pandering for the wrong reasons.

    My favorite line: "Hey Vasquez. You ever been mistaken for a man?" "No. Have you?"
    In the director's cut (which is even better) you see that Ripley had a daughter about Newt's age, who died before she came back. It makes the connection with Newt even stronger. You see how the aliens infected the colony. You also see what happens to Burke. Always get the director's cut of a James Cameron movie. Always.

Hudson is panicky throughout most of the film, but at the end he stands his ground and goes out blazing. Bishop starts off looking sketchy, but he repeatedly saves the day. Lt Gorman starts off being too stuck up to eat with his subordinates, but he goes back to an injured Vasquez so that she won’t die alone.

      @@pamnicklas5536 In fact it depended on the shot and the distance of the camera. Most of the shots were as you say - but sometimes when they only were going to have one portion of the Queen in the shot - then only that portion was filmed - for example - her readying her tail for a strike - they only needed the tail - so they only filmed the tail. Similarly when the Queen is right up against the cage trying to bite Ripley - you don't need much more of the puppet than the head and forelimbs - so that's all they filmed and animated.
      For the bit where the Forklift is about to drop the Alien queen into the airlock and the Queen instead grabs the suit and drags it in with her - that tipping over shot was actually a pair of smaller models. I'm not sure how small. They weren't tiny. But they were made to a size that was easy to work with - they only had to use those miniatures for the ONE SHOT - they MIGHT have used them in a couple of the quick shots looking down into the pit as Ripley is climbing away. But I'm unsure.
      Actually - come to think of it - the smaller model of the forklift suit WAS seen earlier in the film - when Ripley is proving she can drive one to Apone and Hicks, look behind her - there's a "forced perspective" back projection shot of the model used later in the film with a different "doll" in the pilot's seat walking behind her in the "distant" part of the hanger.

    Lt. Gorman isn't a fool, he's just new and inexperienced. Every military officer starts out as a rookie. Normally, the lower-ranking but more experienced Sgt. Apone would have been giving him advice, but he was killed early on. Also, there's a high likelihood the Company picked a guy who'd basically do whatever Burke told him.
    When it comes down to it, Gorman ran back with only a pistol to try and save Vasquez. He also steps back and basically lets Hicks and Ripley take over. We're meant to think that he might have been a decent officer if he'd had the chance to live and learn.

It shows that all the people on the colony are just settlers, not scientists or soldiers or company people or anything like that. Kids are shown running around everywhere getting into trouble. When Ripley and the others track down the colonists, we don't see them but there are a bunch of kids in there somewhere. And it's all Burke's fault.

He turned Hudson into one of the most beloved characters of the Franchise!!!!!!!!!! He wasn't a coward. He did need a bit of leadership. Nothing wrong with that. It always amazes me when people state that the executives of the Weyland Company didn't believe Ripley because it was the same people who ordered Ash to bring back the specimen at the expense of the crew of the Nostromos. It was not the same people! These executives were not even born when the Nostromos incident happened. Now does the company, as a whole, have the same mindset? It's a very strong possibility but the current executives had no knowledge of what exactly happened 57 years ago. If they did then that would mean that there was a memo passed down from each executive to his or her successor about the order to have Ash bring back the alien at all cost. So over the last 57 years every CEO, CFO, Head Science Officer and etc. got a memo stating that the Ash, the artificial person, was ordered to sacrifice the crew of the Nostromos in order to secure the alien. Is that really believable? Again, Burke showed that there were people in the company that would sacrifice others for monetary gain but that does not mean that they knew of the previous order that was given to Ash 57 years before they were even born.
    This is how I see it. Whoever gave Ash his orders in Alien also was high enough in the Weyland/Yutani company to change the crew assignments because Dallas told Ripley that Ash was a last minute replacement. Now during the Nostromos incident Ash could have sent back preliminary reports about his progress in studying the alien but there was no reason to mention that he was preventing the crew from defending themselves because that could lead to a paper trail implicating the company in murder. Now Van Leuwen admitted that the life boat records showed that Ripley's crew landed on LV426 so Burke had access to the coordinates, within a mile, of the alien ship. The fact that the colony was so close to the alien ship leads me to believe that some data was sent back by Ash or it was the biggest coincident in thw world considering how massive a planet has to be to hold an atmosphere. Obviously Hadley's Hope was close enough that Newt's family was able to return to the colony before the creature exploded out of the father. But again, this is just a few W/Y execs who probably didn't know the extent of the creature's danger and figured that anything that happened could be dealt with by the colony. Side note: the time it took to travel to LV426 presently was shorter than for the Nostromos because the advances in space travel during those 57 years (10 months vs 17 days).

    The colonists were scientists, but they were set down there without knowledge of the xenomorphs. The ones they had in jars were presumably ones they had managed to capture or extract (after having suffered untold losses) likely in an attempt to figure out as much as they could about what they were up against before it was Too Late. By the time Ripley and the space marines arrive, it was Too Late.

    please, don't spoil the good memories and good feelings that these two movies gave you by watching the other movies after these, if you want just watch the 2004 movie "alien vs predator", which is not bad at all, the other movies either are garbage (in part or in whole), or simply ruin what was done with the first 2.

    • @wolfgar271
      @wolfgar271 3 года назад

      Actually there was a deleted scene where Burke was found cocooned to a wall later on and begged Ripley for help. She hands him a grenade and walks off. But it was removed mostly for continuity reasons. A face hugger would have still been attached within the timespan between Burke getting captured and Ripley coming across him so it was cut. I also think it was cut because Vasquez and Gorman did the suicide by grenade thing already and it would have been repetitive within the film.

    In the director's cut there is scene where we discover Ripley had a daughter who grew old and died while she was drifting through space. It adds an additional dimension to her relationship with Newt because its a second chance for her to be a mother.

    Some of the most despised film villains you desperately want to die: Burke in Aliens, Percy in Green Mile, Bricktop in Snatch, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Dune, Calvin Candie in Django, most of the town in High Plains Drifter, Buck in Kill Bill, Nurse Ratchett in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the killer in Citizen X. There’s a lot more but those first came to mind.

      @@trhansen3244 I don't think that Alien3 is a waste of time at all, I like the longer cut (The Assembly) and I find it underrated. It's truly interesting as a hard horror drama and deals with very mature and transcendental issues. It's the final chapter in Ripley's story with the alien, Sigourney is amazing again and Charles S Dutton, Charles Dance and Ralph Brown are also great in their respective roles. Elliot Goldenthal music is unbelievable moving (and creepy) as well, so yeah, I recommend it. Call me crazy 😅

      @@carlosvega5699 The thing is - absent the OTHER two films - Alien3 would've been a good film. It succeeds as a film in fact - but it FAILS as a sequel.
      Basically it's "The Last Jedi" of it's time. The director was just like Ruin Johnson in his arrogance and dismissiveness of continuity of the other two films. As Ruin "did his own thing" for The Last Jedi - so too did David Fincher decide he was going to go off in a different direction for Alien3 because HE'S SPECIAL.
      *Sigh*
      Thing is - Ruin Johnson and Davey Fincher actually reportedly did and do make good films on their own. They are just THE WRONG people to bring into an existing continuity of films.

    • @carlosvega5699
      @carlosvega5699 3 года назад

      @@logandarklighter I don't think that Alien3 fails as a sequel. I understand why you and a lot of people can't accept what happen to the characters in the movie (I don't want to put spoilers) but those choices don't make the movie necessarily bad. And Fincher didn't ruin anything, his filmmaking is outstanding and not all of what you see in the movie in terms of story was his decision. Alien3 had a very troubled production and the script was constantly changing. Making that movie was a miserable experience for Fincher and for a lot of people, but the movie ended up being great, unique and coherent with itself. Then the studio butchered the movie again and what they released in cinemas back then was a shorter cut that ruined the pacing, the characters and all the meaning behind the words and actions of those characters. Luckily enough, The Assembly Cut exists and it serves as a proof of the talent of Fincher and the cast and crew. It's a flawed movie, but not a bad one.

    If you like the design of the Engineer's vessel and the Xenomorph hive, check out H.R. Giger's "Biomechanics" series; it served as the inspiration for much of the design of the Alien universe. Warning; it gets weird real fast.
    Also, the reason Hicks' shotgun isn't an issue when the other weapons are is that the smart-guns and rifles fire armor-piercing rounds, which would destroy the nuke plant's heat exchangers. A shotgun doesn't have that kind of armor penetration.
    Final note: "Get away from her" gets all the attention, but I think the emotional crux of the scene is Ripley's repeated taunts of "Come on!" to the Queen. She's done, and almost angry that the creature that has dominated so much of her life through fear isn't giving a better account of itself. The only thing worse than encountering something you fear is realizing you never needed to fear it at all. In any case, Ripley has decided that someone's dying today, and invited the Queen to come find out who.

    The colonists were actually colonists, not scientists experimenting on the Aliens. The colony had been there for 20 years before Ripley's escape pod was found and because Ripley blew the Nostromo up, the company didn't know about the ship with the Alien eggs. After Ripley tells the company about the Aliens, Burke sends the colonists a message requesting they investigate the position where the crashed ship is. A colonist family drives there and the father gets face-hugged (this is in the director's cut). The colonists try to remove the facehugger and in doing so accidentally kill the father (this is not seen but explained in dialogue) They presumably also try to find out what's going on and bring back more eggs. That's why there are both dead and living facehuggers in those containers in the med-lab. Overall the Director's Cut does a much better job explaining what happened on the planet and there are also important scenes for character development and a cool extra scene with the sentry guns. I'll never understand why people recommend the Theatrical Cut, the pacing isn't really better and certainly not worth losing the extra content.
