      Yes, if you want to use the Orbi as an access point (AP mode), then you'll ideally want to connect the Orbi router directly to the primary router/modem via Cat 5e (or higher) cable to ensure max internet speed capability over your Orbi mesh wifi

  • @maximus3ae

    I have almost same setup. Fios router in far end of the house, I have a hardline cat5e cable from fios router to office computer in other end of house because wifi sucked up there. Anyway, my plan for orbi mesh is to install orbi router up in office on existing hard line which would be opposite side of house, setting it up as an access point, then put satellite somewhere else in middle of house somewhere between fios router and office. Hoping it works out and your video helped make me more confident in it and setting it up. Just waiting for delivery now. Thanks!

    Thanks for your informative video. I have a few questions. 1. Is there any problem if you set your Orbi (in AP mode) with the same SSID as the gateway (the modem/router combo)? It seems to me that this is a better choice. All the networks in the house will be merged into one. 2. To use Orbi in the AP mode, do you must turn off the wifi from the gateway? If you don't turn it off, what is the problem? I am interested to use wifi from all the units (gateway, orbi main and orib satellite) to get better accessibility. 3. To use Orbi in the AP mode, do you have to set the gateway in the bridge mode? If you don't set the gateway in the bridge mode, is there any problem? Thanks.

    • @carolyngibbs8447

      I also found a video for BRIDGE mode which I think would be BETTER. So you can unplug the secondary modem/router and place were you like! It's mode is Bridge instead of AP...access point.

    Really helpful video! Question -- I have an old house with plaster wall over steel mesh lath, so wifi signals don't travel too far. The Orbi RBR850 Router spec sheet says it "can support up to 3 Orbi Satellites." If I turn the Orbi Router into an Access Point, would that allow me to use more Orbi Satellites, or would I still be limited to 3 Satellites? Also, could I build a wifi network with multiple Orbi Access Points (using multiple RBR850 units)?

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      I think the router module can only support up to 3 satellite modules, regardless of whether its setup in AP mode or not. (Not 100% sure, but is very likely the case) And you certainly could have multiple APs, but keep in mind that they necessarily will have their own SSIDs.

      @@HJDV I don't think so, based on what I think you're saying. All AP mode will do is allow you to do is create a mesh WiFi connection to a network maintained by a separate main router - disabling the router functions on the Orbi. Where my internet cable is in, I don't need internet. So I placed a switch at the router and pulled a cable from here to the orbi router and satellite.
    If I connect the orbi router to the WAN port, the backhaul with the satellite does not work.
    If I connect the orbi router and the satellite to the switch with a LAN port, the backhault will work. And the internet is good. But firmware update via the gui no longer works.
    Can you explain that?

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors

      When I had mine setup in AP Mode (I've since removed my original Arris router and now use the Orbi as the main router), I only set the Orbi router module to AP mode, and I only had the Orbi router hard-cabled back to the Router/modem via Gb switch. I've not tried setting up a hard-wired backhaul connection between the main and the satellite(s). The manual seems to show it SHOULD be a viable configuration, with or without a switch between the main and the satellite. I wonder if there's a caveat about that configuration when using AP mode. You may have to get Netgear Support to weigh-in on that.

      If you're using the Spectrum provided modem/router combo, you'll likely have to put the Orbi main module in Access Point mode so it doesn't conflict with the Spectrum router, since in their default configurations, both will be trying to act as the main router which is definitely a problem.

    Man i really wished you would have shown how you hooked everything up. I'm really curious to see if AP Mode is good for me but i'm not quite sure how to physically set it up from ISP provided modem/router combo to Orbi router/sat.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 года назад

      If the ISP device is a Modem/Router combo (ie you can't separate them), then you're kind of stuck using the ISP's device and putting the Orbi in AP mode as I originally did. Regardless of whether you're using AP mode or not, a cabled connection (Cat 5e or better) from the main Orbi back to the Router/Modem combo is what you want. You don't needed a cabled connection between the Orbi modules. If you're NOT using AP mode and want to use the Orbi as your Router...AND you can get your ISP to JUST provide the modem, you will HAVE to hard cable directly back to the modem (you can't go through a switch to get to the modem). I ended up doing exactly that last month because I recently had an issue with my Arris router/modem combo and ended up pulling it out and putting in an ISP-provided modem (not a combo device). So I'm no longer using AP mode since my main Orbi is now my Router and not just an access point. But it worked great in either configuration.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 года назад +3

      You still have the benefit of mesh tech when using them in AP mode. AP mode basically just disables the Router and related functions (like DHCP) on the main Orbi module, allowing you to utilize an existing (or higher end) router. But it still acts as the primary for its wifi mesh network. So while roaming the house, you can seamlessly be connected thru a satellite module, and that satellite will route your data back thru the main Orbi, where it is then sent to the designated router (assuming you're not just exchanging data with another wireless host on your network).

      hmmm I wonder if we're connecting back to the main router differently (I'm doing it via hardwire) and maybe that's the difference in behavior? I had no trouble at all with it.

      @@ReeWrayOutdoors Wired connection here two, after about 24 hours I figured it out. It seems that my ISP's modem/router has one of it's 4 ports setup to detect another router and then screw things up. The port works normally for any other device, but when the Orbi was installed on that port it wouldn't connect correctly. After 24 hours, all I needed to do was to move to another port. Then, after I setup AP mode, I moved it right back to the original port as if it's setup as an AP it doesn't do whatever funny business it was doing. Unfortunately, I needed to try every combination of setting and option with a long factory reset/router setup between each test.

    any router made of Netgear is waste of money, the software is extremely laggy, anytime you do a very simple change you disconnect everybody for 5 minutes
