    I work in the computer security field so terms make sense but I was not familiar with Unifi’s environment. I bought a house that had a Unifi network already installed but it was very basic and un-configured for good security hygiene. I looked at a lot of Unifi config videos. This was by far the most comprehensive and easiest to follow. Thanks!! Props to your Apollo passion. My dad was an engineer on Apollo and designed some critical systems on the LEM and CSM

    So I know nothing about networking or switches or routers (I am a MD). I found this guy who would setup a whole Unifi system in my house consisting of 11 APs (all of the cabling is already done) and was going to charge me 5000 euro just for the installation.... which was around the same amount I already paid for my devices. I said I would do it myself. Thanks to you, I was able to install this system, setup different VLANs and help me understand how all of the basics work. Now my wife can spend 5K on something else ;)

    Great help! I just happened to have the exact same setup as you have here, but ran into one major issue.
    21:40 or so you change the network to all the ports to the staff network…. Well after looking at it you only change the unused ports. When I selected all (which is what the video sounds like you intended) it cut off the 24 port switch, and it was then basically DOA. ( I know I could SSH in, but I can’t yet for other reasons)… so I have just reset all my devices for the third time, and think I finally understand what I am doing (changing the network of the switch, so it can’t connect, and as I cut it off I can’t change it back. Judy want to let others know if they have the same issue as their switch suddenly is just offline, but working!
    Thanks for really great help in setting up my network!

    • @randyrandom51
      @randyrandom51 2 месяца назад

      This is exactly what happened to me as well. Everything was going well until that step, then boom...DOA. Had to reset everything and start over and now I've afraid to do this all over again. I'm not IT savvy, but your comment is helpful to avoid this happening again, so thanks.

    I was wondering, per your example setup. you mentioned that you dont want certain devices talking to the rest of the network so you would put them on the IoT network. so for a home network, if you have such things as alexas and appliances that can be controlled by your smart phone. how would you set that up? some of the appliances require your phone to be connected to the same network, but i would think you would want your phone to be connected to the "staff" network.
    sorry i may be over thinking this, but i am still learning.

    • @RayIT560
      @RayIT560 8 месяцев назад +2

      @BruceRichwineJr, unfortunately you will find this the case with some devices like Sonos, I have the same problems with Roku streamers. There applications are "hard coded" to look on the same network as your mobile device. You can try setting up mDNS and see if you can over come this and get it to work but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Good luck....

    • @whsftbldad
      @whsftbldad 7 месяцев назад

      Even without VLANs and VPNs, your device has to be on the same network as the Sonos. I have specific settings to put on my network devices to ensure the Sonos will work correctly, and I only use Ubiquiti products. I had this setup in 4 different office buildings we had.

      I had the same problem with my customer’s Sonos systems, we find it best to be on the same network as the WIFI network. When I had WIFI on one VLAN and the Sonos on another VLAN with no traffic rules, Sonos system gave us trouble.😊

    • @BruceRichwineJr
      @BruceRichwineJr 7 месяцев назад

      @@gregcandido2218 yeah, I’ve found the same issues you did. But originally I did have things working properly, but after and update to my UDM SE traffic stopped being passed between the two networks. It’s fine. I just created a new VLAN called media devices and separated it from my work and personal data devices. Only personal device that touches the media network is my phone.

What would be interesting to see how to setup for me would be how to setup two separate VPNs, one for P2P activity and one to connect to internal resources from outside, as well as how to apply those VPNs application or device based. Additionally would be interesting how to set routes for app with several requirements. Like how to route traffic via a Pi-Hole in the System, route individual wifi over VPN or also even only certain applications with defined ports. Thank you!

    You looked at a solution where most of the equipment is from UniFi.
    Could you make a video about a setup with mixed equipment?
    For example, in my case:
    A Microtik modem that assigns addresses and manages VLANs
    Cisco switches (two 2nd level and one 3rd level)
    43 UniFi access points providing internet and local network access to four groups: administrators, staff, students, and guests.
    How can we separate these users in this setup?

    Do you plan on making a more in depth video on firewall rules? Including VPN firewall rules?

    I didnt quite understand why you had to configure DNS separately for switch and access point ? Would they just inherit the one you already set in the gateway? Also, I guess it’s better to use static ip configuration on the client rather then reserved ip based on MAC address but in case you decide to change your main IP address have to reconfigure everything again. Anyway great video !
