I would like to say I always enjoy your videos/reviews. The samples you provide are always appreciated as well. I noticed in the Canon ef 85mm f1.2 that the eyes were not in focus/focus missed. I don't know if that is an issue with the Eos R but on my Sony a7r3 it usually doesn't miss focus on the eyes when using an af adapter.
Thank you! No the adapter works fine with ef glass. My 35 1.4 if is perfect on there. It’s just the ef 85 1.2 is very slow motor wise and super soft wide open so those 2 things in conjunction are going to net a bunch of soft or slightly missed shots wide open.
Awesome video. I'm torn, I like sharpness of the RF and the character of the EF. It's a tough choice. Do you think putting something like a Cinebloom filter on the RF would mimic the character of the EF? That way you could have the best of both worlds and choose what you want for each situation? Thanks!
Hey! Well I’ve sold the Ef version, the rf is just too good, you do get used to the sharpness and yes I do use filters sometimes to mimic that look, but I don’t really miss the Ef anymore,
@@SNAPAVELI thanks man, i've been deciding between the two for that reason. A comment I found interesting was that with new high megapixel bodies(I have the R5) the CA on the EF becomes more pronounced and more of a pain to correct. Like you said in your video, you can't get back detail that's not there. Appreciate your hard work and taking the time to reply!
Yo Marcus you got the smooth commentary and love that light R&B bgm, your vids are always so professional and helpful. 100% agree with you, I got the 85 RF on release and it's been such a game changer. Also have the 50 RF and hope they remake the 35 L or 135 L in RF too so I can upgrade my EF staples. Stay safe and keep up the great work.
Thanks for the video. Trying to find some stuff to shoot while on lockdown in the house is frustrating lol. Are you switching over to Canon or just adding a new tool to the arsenal?
Ronin X70 LoL yes no shooting going on right now! Well I’m waiting on the r5 to see if it will handle my video needs, but no not switching over totally yet. Have to see what the stills look like from that body first
Both look really nice, RF clinically sharp, but I kinda like the dreaminess of the EF, seems like while it might be technically inferior, as it should be, it seems like it does have a little more character or uniqueness to it. hmmmm
That’s been my conclusion on both the 50 and 85 1.2 EF vs RF. EF more character RF more clinical (how I think of Sigma Art lenses). My style leans more filmic so the EFs suit me better
love your videos and content as always and you deserve much more subscribers, keep up the good work. As far as the differences between the two lenses in my opinion the RF "wins" by all the measurable metrics that will make a lens more appealing when it comes to marketing its performances and optical capabilities, but the EF is just simply making more "beautiful" images. RF appeals to the left brain which loves to measure things and the EF to the right brain which tends to feel things, the dreamy look. I have the OTUS 85 and i will say that the RF lenses are able to match them closely in terms of sharpness but they not on the same level when it comes to spatial rendering and lens transparency. Spatial rendering (or 3D pop) is not only a result of micro contrast but of inherent lens design, something that Zeiss does better than any other manufacturer.
Wilhelm Rosenthal Thank you so much!! Yes I agree with you! I don’t think the Ef 85 1.2l will ever be matched, if definitely has a look that’s hard to duplicate. I don’t thank no we will ever get another character lens like that since everyone is focusing on sharpness. Yes the zeiss pop is unmatched, I’ve even loved my zeiss glass for Sony in the Batis line. Unfortunately I cannot afford to own an otus , only rented!
J. Marcus Photography I got mine used for $1900 and it is in mint condition. Fortunately with the release of RF glass lots of canon Otus owners are letting them go and so prices are dropping considerably. I almost never buy glass brand new, and so my next one will be the Otus 55. The EOS has changed the game with the addition of their focus guide system for manual lenses. I did a photoshoot with the Otus 85 a few weeks ago before the lockdown and I had a 90% keeper rate handheld, the focus turn is buttery smooth and only requires a minute action of the thumb. With so many electronic aids available with modern mirrorless cameras it’s very rewarding to manual focus. It reintroduces the input of the photographer back into the process, sort of like driving a manual car and shifting your own gears through the lens :)
Wilhelm Rosenthal yes I totally agree! Eye af is awesome for fast pace work but it can also me you sloppy with framing. I’ve found myself getting lazy before using it. I was actually considering getting a Fuji gfx and adapting some great mf glass onto it this year.
I keep hearing that the RF 50 1.2 has better character than the RF 85 1.2. I have the Samyang 85mm 1.2 SP Manual Focus (easy to use with the EOS R) which has that dreamy look like the EF 85 1.2 but is much sharper. I may get the EOS R5 before buying another lens.
Bentley B Hey Bentley! Well I don’t think the ds is for me. I think the bokeh kind of looks a little fake like Gaussian blur almost. It lets it les light too. But it has a nice warm color cast to it.
Hi I have to say thank you very clearly. with the many raw files a nice comparison was possible. I like the Canon 85mm RF best from the bokeh and sharpness so far. you actually tested the Sigma 105mm and 135mm. Greetings from Germany. Mario
Moe Alyasini Thanks Moe!! Well if you like the 85 focal length best the 50 won’t satisfy you. I just think optically the 50 has a bit more character, but still super sharp. I think they left that blue refractive element out of the 50 so it still has a bit of its own thing to it. Just a hunch, but it’s more fun to use. I’m just waiting for the r5 to see how these rf lenses do in pro video work.
J. Marcus Photography same here man i sold my Z7 and still kept the Z6 and EOS R. The Z lenses are boring me and i wana move to Canon so hopefully like u said they bring the 120 fps in the R5 then i’ll be gone with them forever
Moe Alyasini yes! I think they really have to at this point, they would be the only brand without it in Mirrorless. Just hope there are no weird limitations. If they can do 4k 120 even better but I’m not holding my breath
Question M. I’m learning as I go. You’ve taken 925k shots and was wondering. What have you found to be the ideal distance to subject wide open for head shots, for full body, for quarter-body shots? With the ef 85 1.2
I think from what I’ve shot, leave a few inches above hair , and frame to mid biceps. Furthest arm and should angled back to create the effect of depth. Mid body is always a challenge, pose with arms so they are not hanging down , don’t want to cut off a hand
Yo Marcus Little help. I’m going this sat to get an ef 85 1.2 vii someone is selling at a crazy low price. Any advice you can give me on examining the lens. I’ve heard people say that some need to be recalibrated. How would i check for that? Anything would help please.
Awesome! What camera are you going to use it on? Calibration isn’t needed on Mirrorless bodies. I’ve never heard of the lens needing recalibrated, just check the focus motor, make sure it focuses, check the rear element for scratches.

Thank you so much Brian!! Yes I’m waiting for that new 35 too!! Hopefully it will be 1.2

Dan Asghar I agree! That’s why I haven’t sold the ef, might be last character lens made!
That’s been my conclusion on both the 50 and 85 1.2 EF vs RF. EF more character RF more clinical (how I think of Sigma Art lenses). My style leans more filmic so the EFs suit me better
Nice comparison brutha man! Looking forward to your 50 RF video.
C Rankin Thank you bro!! The 50 is actually my favorite!
Maaannnnnnnnn.......I can't wait for the EOS R5
Thanks for all you do
You're so inspiring for me
Keep you and your family safe .........best, Rick
Rick Vestuto Thank you so much Rick!! Yes I hope the eos r5 is a film makers dream....
love your videos and content as always and you deserve much more subscribers, keep up the good work.

Richard Collins Photography you and I are both waiting on that r5!
What are your thoughts on the rf 85 1.2 DS
Bentley B Hey Bentley! Well I don’t think the ds is for me. I think the bokeh kind of looks a little fake like Gaussian blur almost. It lets it les light too. But it has a nice warm color cast to it.
Is the difference massive between a 1.8 and a 1.2?
To me I don’t think so! Definitely a difference but not massive to me.
Hi
I have to say thank you very clearly.
with the many raw files a nice comparison was possible.

you actually tested the Sigma 105mm and 135mm.

Mario
Thank you so much!! Well only the 105, it’s really good, but it is just so heavy!
Great work man. Really the 50 is better ? I am shocked ! I def need an 85 but u make me feel i should try the 50 1.2 first ha!
Moe Alyasini Thanks Moe!! Well if you like the 85 focal length best the 50 won’t satisfy you. I just think optically the 50 has a bit more character, but still super sharp. If I could shoot with that model....I'd take my chances with my 85mm 1.2 EF!
i rarely comment, but yes, thanks for the vid. i like the ef 85 more from your pics, will be keeping it and not buying the rf version. thanks.
Raymond Setiadi Thank you Raymond!! Glad I could save you some money!!

J. Marcus Photography basic stuff. Cool bro. Canon R. What do you use to find models. Models mayhem or local Instagram?
ANGEL LONDIAN cool it should be money on the r! Well usually on Ig, or photo meetups
I think your next step is traveling us doing workshops
ANGEL LONDIAN I would love to! This covid has to get sorted out first, then I’d consider it!
What do I feel about the focus speed / accuracy on EF
On the rf it’s a lot faster and extremely accurate even at 1.2!
