I don’t know why this was recommended to me when I don’t even listen to math rock, but I knew immediately that Never Meant would be on the top because it’s easily just one for he best intros ever written.

They were really excited to be there and we even got to talk to them for a few minutes since they were selling their own merch and walking around the bar afterward. We live in Oregon, so it was a huge treat to have them come to the west coast. We assumed we'd never get the opportunity to see them live which made the whole night even better.

Predictable list, but there is a reason these songs are so well known. They're probably the best place to start for a lot of people who aren't familiar with math rock, especially if they came here thinking of the brand of math rock that's basically just emo with clean tapping lines.
I don't really have a top 5 but the intro to When Worms Learn To Fly by Tera Melos is by far one of the most ear catching and interesting intro to any math/prog song I have ever had the pleasure of listening to

When I saw this I knew it’d be never meant, but I expected the bit before the song starts; the noodling, drumwork, count in, etc. That part always struck a chord with me.
After Dark, Sultans Of Ping, Spy Dolphin, Lake Sprinkle Sprankle, and Camp Adventure (both the Management and Twin Galaxies versions) literally like, any song
I'll do one better and give my list a week late with all my reasoning below Mountains - Restarts Specifically the prelude with the horns. Not just saying this because of the channel- the atmospheric moodiness of this intro really is one of the things that brings this song from good to great. Qomolangma Tomato - No Tokyo So whether this is actually math rock is extremely debatable, but what isn't is the result. Never before has such sparse, jerky instrumentation sounded so all-encompassing and menacing. LITE - Bond Probably one of the most perfect distillations of the genre. The rapid build from dense, wiry riffage to an interlocking wall-of-guitars is something so uniquely LITE, that it sounds tacky coming from anyone else. Slint - Washer This whole song is perfect and if you don't know why then you need to stop what you're doing and listen to Spiderland right now. toe - 反逆する風景 So I'm cheating here and including the entire song, but seeing as it's not even a minute long, I'm gonna say it counts. The acid jazz and hip-hop tinge to this track is the perfect introduction to the best math rock record of all time (imo). also i have two honorable mentions Maps & Atlases - Songs for Ghosts to Haunt To While the song itself is nowhere as good as the opener, the seasick intro to this song is probably the single most mathy riff Maps & Atlases ever wrote. Also probably the most mindlessly self-indulgent shred I've ever enjoyed. Polvo - Vibracobra I really like Polvo because they make me feel less bad about using really weird, fucked up tunings. Vibracobra's warped, sitar-like intro is like if Sonic Youth did LSD, and it's so, so good.
VERY cool video -- I love seeing some of these original math rock bands making the cut. My band (Drill For Absentee) played at least one show with Faraquet. It was this "Spring Fling" festival we all played in 1999 -- here is the flyer: ibb.co/GVZdtrv. I remember that Faraquet was kind of the "hot" math rock band in the northeast, since they were from DC and releasing music on Discord. This whole festival was kind of "mathy," and I would recommend checking out some of the other bands on the bill those days. Jazz June, Durian (kind of like Shudder To Think), etc. P.S. -- I've been putting up some unreleased material from Drill For Absentee on RUclips. Most of it is either 1) very bad copies of studio recordings or 2) demos we recorded on a 4-track cassette recorded in our basement . . . but they are the only recordings of stuff that we played through the last three years of the band.
