Sucks, right? You’ll have relationships that are stronger, longer, more stable, etc but you’ll never feel that intense, chaotic feeling of young love ever again. Emotions just mellow out as you age.

I used to think 1:35 - 2:15 was way too needlessly long and repetitive, but it hit me why this is arguably the most meaningful part of the whole song. Eventually, YOU begin to zone out from the song and reminisce about your life. You get lost in your own daydream of heartache/what could have been. It suddenly becomes your story
are you kidding? do you even know anything about music man? you called a midwest emo part "the best riff"? every guitar in the block sharted thanks to you
I think what's sad about this song is that the relationship ended in the most natural way: The love just stopped. Not because of cliches like an affair or something like that. It ended because it just wasn't meant to be. "Never Meant". That makes it more heartbreaking and sad.
It's not really heartbreaking or depressing when it ends that way. It's just straight disappointing, knowing there wasn't really anything more you could do.
I had a difficult childhood and had to grow up sooner than most. I never got to experience things like young love or a group of friends, but this song makes me feel like I’m tapping into another timeline where I did have those things and for just a second I feel whole and for that I am grateful
That just means youre wiser sooner ❤ it may seem great but it's romanticized. Most of us wouldve been better off without the romanticized Disney pre written heart shatter. Stay strong fellow human
This is my first time ever listening to American Football and for some reason they give me the feel that I've listened to them my whole life. How does a song/band that you've never heard before give this much hard hitting nostalgia. It shouldn't be possible.
+Spencer L They've influenced a lot of bands, in particular in the emo scene. You can hear elements of them throughout modern rock which is part of why. Because even if you don't listen to bands like Brand New and Far you probably have heard people influenced by them hence why they have that familiarity.
The general vibe I get from this is “Don’t cry because it’s over, be happy that it happened.” Love is a gift, not an inherent privilege. The only way to come out alive is to appreciate it for what it is.
To me, this song represents the raw emotion of a relationship that was never meant to last. Two souls with pure intentions fall in love, but they are too young and naive to keep their promises, which leads to the relationship's demise. They say their goodbyes, embarking on separate life journeys never to meet again. I know we were never meant to be
I am 35 years old and I literally cannot listen to this song without crying. I just become overwhelmed with the memories of being young. Falling into feelings so hard that every little thing crushed me emotionally. But the emotional highs were also so much higher. Guitar music was loved by most. While I don't want to be a slave to nostalgia, something tells me I'll never feel anything like this for any other genre of music ever again.
This makes me happy. I did experience it the first time around (was going into my 3rd year of college in '99), and if there was something that these bands were working hard to convey, it was just that -- a projected sense of emotion, nostalgic or otherwise. Glad to have another generation enjoying it.
a few weeks ago, me and my friends went down to the American Football House for our friends birthday, since it was only about an hour away from where we were staying, we listened to this album completely on the drive there, and it ended as we pulled up in front of the house. it was honestly really cool.
this hit me hard. I was with her for seven years. the words "never meant" being repeated kinda stings but also confirms that we can't keep lying to each other. Now I'm looking for a new place to stay, a new job, a new life. I'm losing my best friend. I cherished every moment and wouldn't change it. I will always see her as the most special person in the world. We traveled up and down California, Florida, Japan. We played in the same band. she was there after my suicide attempt. I was there for hers. We worked on our cars together. we sat on the carpet and played video games until it was time to see the sun setting. We cooked together. We had a love that means more than two people "in love", we just innately had love. And that will never fade. This week has been rough, and all our friends are here for us. she stopped by last night to pick up some of her things. if feels like she never left. We both feel like that. I instinctively held her hands in front of me, pulled her in, and put my chin on her head. But I wasn't happy. for years. We tried so hard, constantly patching holes in this half- sunken ship. it was never meant.
Bro, had a similar ride with my ex. We were together for six years and midway through it we always had some conversations about "how long it will go? and why do we have this kind of doubt", in the end the finish was the best for both sides. We kept in touch and we're clearly better now. Not gonna lie, the friendship we had does not exist anymore, but we care about each other and there's no hard feelings between the two of us. Just like the song states, some things were never meant and I guess we were never meant (even though we tried hard to make it happen).
Hey man, I'm sure you are a lot better off now as some time has passed. I just wanted to say I've been in two LTRs similarly, first one we got together freshman year and ended about 5 years later, second one was about a year after that and it lasted about 6 years. I'm 27 now and trust me man, you'll get through it, just love yourself and keep growing.
Same brother but 7 years and i'm 27 now. I don't want to start a new life without her but she's not in love with me anymore ... we have to keep moving forward. We will be alright.
2:10 First date, at a party. She's talking to another guy, protagonist appears dejected. He walks outside, she chases him down and kisses him -- "don't worry, I'm all yours". Watched this video a million times and never noticed these few seconds, how they tie together. So interesting how this video shows the rise and eventual fall of this new relationship, but in just one very brief moment in the story of this otherwise-blissful meeting, still manages to nail something like this.
I’m going to be turning 52 in a few weeks. How is it I’ve never heard this before now? I’m an old soul now, but can still feel the pangs of loss of a first love. The heartbreak was unbearable at the time, but now I look back with fondness and wonder. There’s nothing’s comparable of being young and in love.
I only heard this song for the first time yesterday. Yet it feels like it's been with me my whole life. It reminds me of every moment.. Every love lost, every friend I'll never see again, every year that passes away..
This song is timeless. It's relatable but not because of being cliche. It's sincerity is evident. It makes me nostalgic for a depressing time (which is kind of the opposite of what nostalgia is). I always think of the moments right before I met the person I dated. I think of my life and how I was. Then the first moments of meeting and getting to know them. (All portrayed here). I barely knew anything about them. But there was this unwavering hope. That person becomes why you get up in the morning. And then I think about whatever that person is to me now. However we ended up. If we're still friends, occasional acquaintances, or total strangers again. It's odd, to see how things end up. Where you start and ultimately finish. And although it conjures up all these thoughts, I still find solace in this song. Keep moving forward, friends...
Totally on point!! This song means so much to me. It's helped me get through decades of relationship issues and hardships. Good music should always make you feel like this..music is def the universe's soul, felt ❤☮♾
I always found the instrumental on this oddly hypnotizing, maybe it’s the swinging between time or the way the strumming and the drumming kinda combat each other. But I think that’s one of the key factors that make this band so good
lyrics: Let's just forget Everything said And everything we did Best friends and better halves Goodbyes And the autumn night When we realized We were falling out of love There were some things That were said That weren't meant But were said Like we never did Not to be Overly Dramatic I just think it's best 'Cause you can't miss what you forget So let's just pretend Everything and anything Between you and me Was never meant
I find interesting to compare the thoughts people have about youth and teenagers nowadays to this. For me, being young isn't about living fast, being drunk every weekend and having sex with everything that moves. For me being young is about falling in love, being heartbroken, living adventures with your friends, thinking your life choices, having a shitty job so you can afford a t-shirt from your favorite band. Being young is like suffering with your friends and enjoying every second of it, because at the end of the day you realize that you can only be young once
I agree man. I may have gotten drunk most weekends, among other things, but i never felt thats what it was all about. I hiked and did all kinds of shit too, this song kinda grounds you in that way. I can listen to it in almost any circumstance. it makes me remember what living is about while not worrying about being a dumbass when the occasion calls. best way i can put it.
I don't know how I've never heard this song, but good lord... This just perfectly encapsulates a love that burned hotter and brighter than it ever had any right to. Recognizing it's time for both of you to move on, and wishing you could take it all back because it's easier to act like you never cared at all than to realize it'll never be the same between you.
The fact that this video answers questions that people have been asking for 14 years to themselves as they stared blankly through their squinted tears at the album art as they listened to this song over their soft whimpering exhales is just... I can't even explain it.
I've loved the album for a second now, and I like the fact that the video's concept is simple and understated. There are plenty of artsy-fartsy music videos out there to go around. To me, the beauty of American Football's music is its intrinsic adolescence; and I appreciate the fact that 20 years later, as grown men, they didn't try to turn it into something it wasn't.
+Franck Bender I like how it looks like the video takes place 20 years ago. It's not even a 2014 music video version of the song - the video is made to look like it's still 1999.
Franck Bender yeah I hear people say that a lot but there's honestly nothing adolescent about this song. I mean it was made when the band were in their 20s lol
Ulfric Stormcloak sorry man me and my guys had been scoping the house out since the first day of class at UIUC. Hahahaha feel free to come by and play Skyrim whenever tho ;-)
I discovered this band about 14 years ago, just when they breaked up. Now I got the opportunity to watch them live in Barcelona, in Primavera Sound Festival. After that, I will be able to die in peace.
Everyone's mentioning the house from the album art. Anyone else notice that the other pictures from the CD booklet are also incorporated in the video? The field & the trees with pink flowers.
Back in like 2005 my guitar player (who died years ago) made me a mix CD & this was the first song on it, followed by Minus the Bear, Red Shirt Brigade, The Farewell Bend, Hum, Chavez, etc. He showed me a lot of great bands. Thanks Cliff. ❤
Yeah this isnt actually when its happening, its a couple years later when you realize you still havent felt anything close to that. Maybe you never will, everything is so strange now
Yup, 3 years into university and I literally haven’t made a friend, honestly haven’t even tried, and I’m kinda Okay with that. Because life teaches you that not everything needs to be a movie, and not everything should be.
I used to play this song every morning at 5am on my walk to work in the quiet snow in Montana. About a quarter miles walk. It was always otherworldly. The song seemed to intensify the solitude and coldiness of the environment. The phrase "you can't miss what you forget" has always stung. The hardest part of moving on is reaching the precipice of heartache and hope. To make the decision that the best way forward is to forget, or at least forget enough to let what was be starkly separated from what is. That conclusion is a necessary one, yet harbors a tinge of heartbroken frustration. To forget is to minimize. And how can you minimize someone who was your everything. The meaning you prescribed wasn't as grand as you once thought, and to admit such a thing is truly a hard pill to swallow.
One of the best break-up songs to this day. The lyrics, the music, the video...if you've ever had your heart broken, I really feel like you can relate to this song.
I'm about to graduate high school, man. It doesn't feel real. This song relaxes me and takes me back to the beginning. That's why I'm here. I hope you all are well.
to the person who introduced me to this song, truly thank you. this song (and album) has helped me cope with loss, depression, heartbreak, anxiety, and just growing up in general.
When I think of the best songs ever made, this has to be on that list. The beauty in this track is the simple complexity. It's a simple song about the feelings of love, but complex in meanings. Love can come to us with different results. It can hit like a truck that leaves a nasty scar, or be just a passing glance. But no matter what, it's easy to think of that person for a long time. Even if we just see them for a moment or two, it's easy to see the time spent, and how it was never meant to be.
i just got out of a 2 1/2 year relationship. i was 17. now 20. this is in my top 10 songs of all time of any genre. thank you American Football for this.
The best break up song ever finally has a music video. They should make for the rest of the songs on the album as well, specially "Stay Home" and "For Sure"
This album was the soundtrack of my divorce. "Never Meant" is definitely their masterpiece and it's nice to see it get a video with the deluxe edition release. Though my favorite AF song is "The Summer Ends" and I would love to see that get a video!
Let's just forget Everything said and everything we did best friends, better halves, goodbyes And the autumn night when we realized we were falling out of love There were some things that were said that weren't meant like we never did Not to be overly dramatic I just think it's best cause you can't miss what you forget So let's just pretend everything and anything between you and me Was never meant

September 14 marks the 20th anniversary of LP1. In honor of this special occasion we're sharing a collection of previously unreleased and newly mastered instrumental demos. Year One Demos - 12” vinyl, one time pressing, limited to 2000 - is available for pre-order now in the Polyvinyl Store (out 12/13).The recordings are a glimpse back at that inauspicious time, and according to Steve Lamos who recently re-discovered the original tape (labeled with the date May 31, 1997), it's the first proper set of demos the band ever made: plyvnyl.co/af-20
You know, I honestly think this is the best song of all time. Most people would say Bohemian Rhapsody or A Day In The Life but I say it is this. This is music in its purest form, sending a message so deeply painful, with lyrics that perfectly capture the human nature, the love, and the eventual end of it. Not to mention, the instrumental is magnificent, exploding as Kinsella softly says "I just think it's best/'Cause you can't miss what you forget". It is so crushingly sincere, emotional and relatable, encapsulating in a little over 4 minutes the most important thing in this world: love. This song will always have a soft place in my heart and it stands as a timeless classic.
Figure I'd give an update to y'all: The house featured in this video and its LP1 cover went up for sale. Plans were to demolish and build apartments. However...the band American Football itself bought it as of May-ish 2023. No word on if they're going to rework and remodel this beautiful dilapidated house, but I imagine they'll do something amazing with it. They intend to keep the outside looking the same.
you dont want one try to marry the first girl you date or date girls that dont mean as much to you if you want to date around because losing someone you love is horrible
@@limesoda9167 after you're thirty im guessing you get financial indendance and stability, a bunch of life experience and insight, the ability to not be enslaved by your emotions and hormones like you are as a teenager but I am also 16 so idk
I got into American Football right before the start of my senior year of high school. I ended up listening to them during that whole year and throughout college; I even visited the house on the cover a few times since I attended UIUC. I know it's kind of dramatic to say, but I don't know what my life would have been like without these tracks. There's something about them that just clicked so well with that period in my life that it's now impossible for me to go back and separate the music from my memories and emotions of the time.
It’s crazy to believe this came in 1999. I wish I could send this song back to my teenage self it would have changed my life. Still a pretty awesome song as an adult too though. One of the best pieces of music I’ve heard in a very long term.
When the 90s renaissance happens, like what's happening now with the 80s, the entire production crew from this video should be on speed dial for any director looking to make a 90s TV series or movie. This captures 1999 PERFECTLY.
man i'll never forget when me and my ex girlfriend broke up while this song was playing. we had been in a relationship for about a year and a half, she was the only girl i had ever really felt comfortable with and i could say there was a time when i could've seen us being together for the long run. we had some issues months before the break up as in arguing and bickering over stuff that matters very little to me now that i think about it, and i could notice that those issues were taking a toll on her and myself. i realized all too late that this girl had mentally checked herself out of the relationship before i could do anything. now i've always been a fan of american football, i've heard this song more times than i could count, and i guess i never really understood or attempted to interpret the lyrics to this song i picked this girl up after i had just gotten off work one day because she said she wanted to talk. so, we talked. we talked about the good times we had, and the bad times, why those bad things happened, where we think we lost ourselves along the way. we cried and we held each other for two hours exchanging kisses and good memories we had with each other. then, like it was supposed to happen, this song came on and while i was holding her, it seemed like i was just listening to the song for the first time again. i suddenly just kinda understood everything kinsella was saying, and it made the tears flow even faster. i ended up driving her home, giving one last goodbye, and then i have not seen her since. so in conclusion, this song means a lot to me, and to jordan, i know you weren't much of a fan of american football or midwest emo, but if you ever happen to see this comment, i'm sorry i couldn't change for the better, i think of you often and i'm thankful for the memories we got to share together.
Because falling out of love is a horrifying potential and nothing seems to be able to stop it, the moment we notice it is the moment we can forsee the death of the whole relationship and all we want to do is turn the car around
I was living in a very small town in Ohio. All of the houses were old and from a time long gone. I had just graduated college when a friend and I started talking. We then began dating after a summer of texting and chatting back and forth. She was still going to school and I was living with a bunch of other guys in a pretty run down house that I tried my best to keep up on. She would come over and do her homework while I worked my job at a desk and then we would take a break and go get food. Sometimes I'd put this song on as we drove around. We both thought it was ironic. When the New Year came, I spent it with her up in a very northern region of the state. Then a few months into the New Year go by and suddenly...we broke up. No more late nights together. No more long drives. No more getting to hold hands. No more gifts or surprises from one another. For about a week, I played this song and the album constantly to cope. Now I knew what it was like to experience the feeling of "Never Meant." But if you've made it to the end of this, know that life keeps going. It doesn't stop. Good things come and go on their own whether we ask them to or not. That girl and I are still good friends and we both wish the best for one another. I hope you can get back up and continue living and appreciating all that you go through.

Want nostalgia. Polyvinyl and American football just bought the house in this video

Man. This makes me nostalgic for something I never experienced. Perfect video for a great song.
Then I guess it's not nostalgia... it's regrets dude
This makes me happy. I did experience it the first time around (was going into my 3rd year of college in '99), and if there was something that these bands were working hard to convey, it was just that -- a projected sense of emotion, nostalgic or otherwise. Glad to have another generation enjoying it.

this hit me hard.
It's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all bud
I hope you’re doing better now, even just a bit. If not, I hope you find peace whenever your life is ready for it.

So interesting how this video shows the rise and eventual fall of this new relationship, but in just one very brief moment in the story of this otherwise-blissful meeting, still manages to nail something like this.

These boys walked so AN ENTIRE GENRE could run.
D C fully relatable to this man
Thanks for that thought; finds a bit of clarity in the immense, foggy, unwavering atmosphere and emotion that is this song.

This reply perfectly describes how my last relationship was and this song encapsulates that experience as well.
+Franck Bender
Can confirm, look what happened to Linkin Park.
+Franck Bender I like how it looks like the video takes place 20 years ago. It's not even a 2014 music video version of the song - the video is made to look like it's still 1999.

And I'm not scared to admit I thought it was.
Franck Bender yeah I hear people say that a lot but there's honestly nothing adolescent about this song. I mean it was made when the band were in their 20s lol

Iconic. Awesome re-use of the house from the album.
I CAN'T DEAL WITH THESE FEELS

When I think of the best songs ever made, this has to be on that list.
The beauty in this track is the simple complexity. It's a simple song about the feelings of love, but complex in meanings. Love can come to us with different results. It can hit like a truck that leaves a nasty scar, or be just a passing glance. But no matter what, it's easy to think of that person for a long time. Even if we just see them for a moment or two, it's easy to see the time spent, and how it was never meant to be.

This was perfect. I love how its not just a music video but a story.
When the 90s renaissance happens, like what's happening now with the 80s, the entire production crew from this video should be on speed dial for any director looking to make a 90s TV series or movie. This captures 1999 PERFECTLY.
That riff will forever be in my head
man i'll never forget when me and my ex girlfriend broke up while this song was playing. we had been in a relationship for about a year and a half, she was the only girl i had ever really felt comfortable with and i could say there was a time when i could've seen us being together for the long run. we had some issues months before the break up as in arguing and bickering over stuff that matters very little to me now that i think about it, and i could notice that those issues were taking a toll on her and myself. i realized all too late that this girl had mentally checked herself out of the relationship before i could do anything. now i've always been a fan of american football, i've heard this song more times than i could count, and i guess i never really understood or attempted to interpret the lyrics to this song i picked this girl up after i had just gotten off work one day because she said she wanted to talk. so, we talked. we talked about the good times we had, and the bad times, why those bad things happened, where we think we lost ourselves along the way. we cried and we held each other for two hours exchanging kisses and good memories we had with each other. then, like it was supposed to happen, this song came on and while i was holding her, it seemed like i was just listening to the song for the first time again. i suddenly just kinda understood everything kinsella was saying, and it made the tears flow even faster. i ended up driving her home, giving one last goodbye, and then i have not seen her since.
so in conclusion, this song means a lot to me, and to jordan, i know you weren't much of a fan of american football or midwest emo, but if you ever happen to see this comment, i'm sorry i couldn't change for the better, i think of you often and i'm thankful for the memories we got to share together.

My wife's boyfriend introduced me to this song
Now I knew what it was like to experience the feeling of "Never Meant."
But if you've made it to the end of this, know that life keeps going. It doesn't stop. Good things come and go on their own whether we ask them to or not.
