Hello, Steve here, hope you're doing well. A question I get asked quite often is what is the best way to learn how to play in other tunings. I think a great way to start is to learn other songs or parts of songs in different tunings, this way you will get some insight into how to possibly play, techniques you can use, where chords are, nice-sounding notes, and so on. Therefore, in this video, I'll show you 4 DAEAC#E riffs for you to get started with!

Never seen someone perfect Sleepy Dog's riffs before
Two Snaps they’re actually not very hard. I’m sure you and tons of other people could get a hang of it! It’s not as complicated as it looks!
@@garrettfiles9992 I've seen some riffs slowed down and noticed how it's not as complex as it seems but most people dont do it just right ya know?

Sleepy Dogs music is so good and hes a really cool dude in general.
The sleepy dog riff sounds so much better without a billion pounds of compression...
I think he or whoever compressed those recordings to the level they were was to get the volume much louder but It's a trade off making everything sound more squashed and less pleasant to listen to.

Cool video as usual. Have always been of the opinion, that the fastest way to get into the head of a musician, is by studying his songs.
Or if you're lucky enough personal lessons but that limits the options.

So amazing! Honestly I'd love to see a full video about Algernon. Their guitar parts always left me absolutely floored, sounds like he's constantly shredding two different riffs entire albums. I was always like "how the heck does someone even write something like this?"

They have some really interesting ideas. The ideas are really different from one another but both parts work so well together! I did do a video on writing ideas like algernon cadwallader sometime last year. Thanks for your kind words. I'm practicing everyday atm. I think that really helps. Being getting up half an hour earlier to get in some practice time.

It sounds like 2 different riffs because it is. There were 2 guitarists on this album. Joe and colin.
btw this tuning is pretty decent for arrangements. Have tried out it's CGDgbd verision today.

Steve, i've only gotten into playing tappy mathrock stuff in the past year. Your vids have been very helpful! Now able to implement tapping in most styles i play.. Thank you!! From the bottom of my heart man. So, heres my quick question to you, please be honest here!! :) Do you think it would be silly to write mathy inspired things in A#FCFAC tuning? So basically id need to capo 4 frets higher to get the same pitches. Be honest, trying to figure out if i should really get a seperate guitar to tune higher - i always tune D standard with pretty thick strings, going on 8 years now..and i already have used that low A# alt tuning (on the same guitar(s)) for years for heavy stuff(which is the same as CGDGBD/DAEAC#E but lower)
I wont be able to learn peoples songs that use the higher frets - thats okay cause i never learn songs anyways - but for my own writing - shooting myself in the foot or maybe a cool thing to do?
Hello. Thanks for the love, and I'm super happy you have been learning from my videos.
I haven't had much experience of lower tunings (I did drop B when learning some slipknot, haha). Of the top of my head if you have thicker gauge of strings then thag should be fine, use your ear as the ultimate judge, do they sound too loose, etc.
I don't mind tuning up, I use 10s but I'm doing it to another guitar and not my main guitar becuase I don't want to mess with the neck (I keep my main guitar in standard). The guitar in this video is a cheap Peavy that I don't mind messing around with it.

@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock Thanks for taking the time to respond. I mostly was curious if you think having to play everything 4 frets higher would limit the writing process, especially when trying to achieve sounds of an already high capo in these higher tunings.
I suppose, i could keep the things i write and play simple(since its all cramped up there with fenders and gibson style hollowbodies), whence being capo'd at fret 14 to get a sound similar to being at fret 10 in a traditional pitch. And maybe when i get some kind of guitar with an easy cutaway, shallow neck pocket, and 24 frets someday, it might be a non-issue entirely..
Thoughts? P.S. i use the same tuning(s) on all guitars (found a setup sweetspot and the D, G, B, and almost always the high E, remain static thru the various tunings) and use the different guitars to inspire different writing styles and sounds. from twangy, to tight sleek and modern, to hollowbody HB's, to quirky cheap vintage and imperfect with that garagey postpunk mojo.
Hi Steve, have you tried using spider capos before? I just got some and use standard tuning. It’s great to have an interesting chord held down as a foundation for a song but with the familiarity of standard tuning and the ability to still do power chords. I think TTNG use spider capos on a couple of tracks.

Yup, it can be either A/D or Asus4 depending on how you would personally classify it. I'd say open A with a D in the root position.

Space Cadet by Sleepy Dog isn’t necessarily math heavy, but it’s not too hard to figure out. Basically just Bmaj7, Emaj7, Amaj9.

What are the ideal string gauges for this tuning?
Lighter would be better because you will be tuning up three of the strings. An alternative is to tune to CGDGBD with regular gauge stings ( I'm thinking 10s or 11s) . It is the same tuning but a whole step down.

Honestly i'm afraid to tune up my guitar so much
honestly all you should be afraid of is tuning up the b up to c# make sure your strings are semi "warn in" and you will be find tuning up, if you really dont want to risk snapping a string tune up slow over 5-10 minutes. Tuned my guitar from standard to daeac#e like 50 times so far and havent broken a string ever. the only time ive snapped any strings was three times tuning up to standard from a super low down-tuning too fast.
