I think some of my favorite videos is when you cover men’s fashion and your “personal opinions.” I am fortunate to have a great seamstress 5 minutes from my home & I have taken quite a few pants to have them taken up and narrowed.
John, I still think you are the person men (at least I) would hire for a consultation & shopping expedition.

Love this video. I truly believe...cuffing is ones own style and how you feel when you look in the mirror. I am 47 years young and started cuffing my jeans this year (showing ankle...with a very low sock or a no-show sock) and it looks really good I think. I have gotten so many compliments this year on my "new" look (not just my pant cuffing), it's been so nice. I would like to thank you for some of this John, I watch your videos and after losing 80 pounds, my entire "look" (wardrobe) has obviously changed!!!👍

I know a few years back, pants (chino and jeans) everyone was letting them bunch up and that was the look. But now with pants slimming down, I think it doesn’t look good breaking/bunching up too much as before.
Yeah. I have some new pants and need to hem them bc I normally buy 32” lengths but on the slimmer chinos, they look not right. I think part of this is bc many are wearing slimmer chinos with no break or higher to show their ankles and shoes.
    Thanks for the video.

Cuffs to me are a bit too much of a 'just stepped off the yacht' nautical look, and best worn with a pair of deck shoes. You just can't beat good tailoring for a quality looking hem. Love the video's John, keep 'em coming.

I think it should be noted that if the length is just above the shoe or with minimal break than when sitting it will expose the leg and socks more than you might like. So I think just a tad bit of a break is just enough.

    Great info !
Formal attire should be worn with no cuff, and at least touching the top of the shoe or with a slight break in the front. While the over all "high water" look exposing the ankle , or contrasting length dropping below the heel in the back of the shoe are no go's.
    Thanks for sharing . . .

Agree on most of what you've said except for the 'excessive tapering' issue that seems to still be prevalent today. I really don't think it works well for classic style dress trousers especially if u have an athletic build (muscular thighs and calves) and start looking like u have legs like a string of sausages a la Daniel Craig! It also accentuates big feet which look like large rowboats, clownish! Middle of the road would be my recommendation .

Whether is it short, medium and long break all three choices are of individual preference. I prefer the old school style of dressing. I like to wear high waist pants, semi baggy cut with long droop break and one and a half inch cuff of course. Dressing is a very subjective preference. To each their best.

Jeans or pants too long are ugly.

I tried the cuffed jeans look for about five minutes but honestly, I just felt it made me look like I bought jeans too long and just said "F it". In the past (when I was in junior high and actually had pants that were too long) I just couldn't get them to stay cuffed/rolled up. At some point they just fall down and get stepped on, which is very annoying especially when raining or in the winter.
Personally, I feel properly hemmed jeans or any other type pants is the safest way to go. Pinrolling may be in right now but what about a year or two from now? I just can't be bothered to follow fashion that closely.

    • @jimmorgan6819
      @jimmorgan6819 4 года назад +1

cuffs have been around for years and add a touch of style and class to your slacks. Once you have started wearing cuffs that is all you will want to have. When you stand up and having to always pluck and push your pants legs down then do cuffs and that straightening of your pants legs goes away. If you are also always retucking in your shirt in your pants try shirts stays or some are called shirt tail garters such a great item for any mans wardrobe. keeps your shirt tucked in no mater how many times you bend stoop or sit your shirt stays tucked and your socks are always up and do not sag...

It's a thing I see a lot with kids at school. They grow like they are on steroids, and we moms just buy 10 cm too long pants so they can cuff them shorter during a whole year instead of needing new pants every month. After 18 I think cuffs are a no-go. Just get the right length, even if you want a bare ankle look. There are nice 28-29 inch inseam jeans for riding the bicycle in the summer. Hard to find though....

The comment in the clip that Ralph Lauren uses not just a cuff, but a wide cuff, is an odd one. Cuffs/turn-ups reduce your trouser length, so if you're a short dude they will make your legs look shorter. Obviously I don't presume to know better than Mr Lauren, but the choice of a wide turn-up does seem to go against perceived wisdom.
A tailor once told me that he reckons designers unconsciously design for their own body types, ie Armani suits are best on shorter, stockier chaps, Paul Smith looks better on taller, slimmer frames etc.

Thank you for that information. My problem is that I'm struggling to find a reliable tailor. So many in the past have ruined my clothes. Can you help?

That’s a tough call, sorry you’ve had that experience. My only advice would be to find an actual tailor, not a partial tailor in a dry cleaning business. Find someone that does military uniforms, and wedding dresses. They tend to have a higher skill set.

    Idk why I'm here..
    I'm a woman.
    I don't even have a partner.
Yet I'm enjoying every video and topic you making..
    Weird, right?

I agreed with everything but I don't like that extra wide cuff, at least not on someone my age (56). It would look fine on a guy in his 20s, 30s, and even 40s, but I feel like it would make me look like I'm trying too hard.

sorry to disagree; i'm 45 and i don't think it would look good on me; never tried though but i just don't like it

I have to disagree with you at least with slacks. Jeans I would agree with you but not slacks.

What's the difference between fashion and style?

Fashion is what you wear. Style is what you have.
