This was very helpful! I’ve been trying to find tips to help navigate editing in iMovie. I did exactly what you mentioned at the beginning, making cuts, and changing the speed. Can’t wait to check out more of your channel and learn some more editing techniques
You saved my life. btw how can i get rid of the audio part only in the part where i speed up the video? I searched and couldnt find..just weired sounds...
Hey thanks for watching. If you want to “duck” the audio out you can “option click” the areas you want to change and then pull that audio down to zero. Or you can “option-command-b” to detach the audio.
Thanks for this video. i watched a couple others, but didn't understand much.Your explanation was perfect!! Thanks again. Could speed up my video right away. Uploading now :-)
Hi thanks for watching. Glad you liked the video. As far as adding the whoosh effect this video is about adding background music: ruclips.net/video/MXMhjE6zDcU/видео.html. But I also show how to stack sound effects along with the music. Hope that helps.
Great tutorial, works great!. Only downside is you then can't edit the speed once done, found I had to delete clip and start again unless I cmd-B either side, since the speed ramp section isn't highlighted once done. Am I doing something wrong?
Sorry, found it, when you click in the clip it highlights the whole clip, but clicking right on the hare highlights the speed ramp section and allows further speed editing! Schoolboy error!
Thanks for watching. I'm glad the video helped. I don't have one on transitions. But I can add it to the list. However, I don't use many of the transistions in the software I rather cut or shoot in camera transitions that go together after.
I did that after exporting the original video in Final Cut Pro. However check this video on how to add and animate bars in iMovie. If you line them up right you could potentially do something similar. ruclips.net/video/kCzuiPejkkM/видео.html
Great stuff, thank you! What frame rate did you have the clip at? I'm trying to ramp up a segment of a 24fps clip in a 24fps timeline, but the result is a choppy motion at anything higher than 1000%. Does my frame rate have anything to do with it?
Thanks for watching. Framerate shouldn't matter as much when you're speeding things up. Like the first clip in the video was at 24fps, the drone is just moving slow. But if you need to do slow motion and then speed ramp, then you're going to need to shoot at higher framerates like 60 and 120p.
Questions, I have done this but theres not way to correct the timing once i make my selection, if I click on it only allows me to speed or slow the clip but not change where it is selecting. Its frustrating if i have to go back and change a mistake without re doing the whole thing
Is there a way to save one clip out of the entire video without deleting other parts? I always have to delete the other clips before I can export what I want.
@@CreativeTechLab thank you for your response. On the time line, when I have many split clips, and I want to export one at a time. Since the export will save the entire timeline, I would have to delete the other clips on the time line before saving the one I want.
Thanks for watching. There's a "smoothing" effect doing it this way rather than just cutting the clips, which is closer to how speed ramping works in a more robust software like Final Cut Pro
Thanks for watching. That was done in FCP just to open the video since that's what the talking head video was edited in. I'd have to research if you could to do it in iMovie. But just off the top of my head you would need to overlay a black image and then to get it to move you would have to use the Ken Burns effect. If I get a chance I'll look into it. If you're looking for a somewhat similar effect you can add black bars to the top and bottom. you can see this video here: ruclips.net/video/p6uSj2S-hkc/видео.html. The only thing you'd want to do is to play with the zoom so that they fade in and then add another overlay and keep that one static right after it. Hopefully that helps and all makes sense.
Thank you so much for this tutorial you did very good. Also I like what you did with your channel you have my subscription would love to have your support as well. ATB Joe 😎👊🏻
Gotcha! Yeah I was a little too focused on the tutorial itself, I will definitely look for stuff like that in future videos. Appreciate the feedback 🙏🏽
Creative Tech Lab I would like a mentor in video shooting and editing. Do you have any availability? One Jamaican helping another I’ve already started shooting with my Nikon D7000 and iphone. And editing with iMovie
Looks good but technically this is not a speed ramp...just a fast part of a video. The reason "ramp" is part of speed ramp is because the clip should "ramp" into the effect. In other words, slowly start to speed up or down. In this video it instantly speeds up and doesn't ramp.
Thanks for checking out the video. I see what you're saying. However using this method gives you more control over how you would want the clips to change speed, so you could have it change however you like using more selctions on the clip. Also when you use this method, iMovie defaults to selecting "smooth" which in essence accomplishes the effect most people are looking for.
Yeah, I was doing it wrong, so wrong. I watched so many videos finally to find what i was looking for. Thank you for the great video !!!
Glad I could help!
Thank you, I also didn't know I and O were shortcut keys, I just usually press R while dragging as the prompt in iMovie.

How do you do the intro scene? How it almost cuts the black in half to reveal the scene .. that’s awesome

Oh, just a quick question please - what sound effect did you use for the speed ramp?
I used whoosh sound effect from Epidemic Sound.

this is a great way thank you, but I'm still having issues as the video is extremely choppy what would resolve this
Not sure. It could be a lot of things from if the footage was shot correctly to the age of your computer.

Is there a way to save one clip out of the entire video without deleting other parts? I always have to delete the other clips before I can export what I want.
Not sure I understand your question. Your clips in the library bin will remain. But if you can only export whatever is on the timeline.
@@CreativeTechLab thank you for your response. On the time line, when I have many split clips, and I want to export one at a time. Since the export will save the entire timeline, I would have to delete the other clips on the time line before saving the one I want.
Can you see a difference if you just cut it and change the speed instead?
Thanks for watching. There's a "smoothing" effect doing it this way rather than just cutting the clips, which is closer to how speed ramping works in a more robust software like Final Cut Pro
The adjustments go away once I start editing, I can't get back to adjust it if I made a length error
Not exactly sure why
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
Great video
Thanks. Glad it you liked it!
I have little bit different question, how did you do the black bar opening scene? Is it made in imovie too?
Thanks for watching. That was done in FCP just to open the video since that's what the talking head video was edited in. I'd have to research if you could to do it in iMovie. But just off the top of my head you would need to overlay a black image and then to get it to move you would have to use the Ken Burns effect. If I get a chance I'll look into it. Hopefully that helps and all makes sense.
Oliver Kallion you can also use a green screen cinematic bar effect you find on youtube
How can I do this on the iPhone XR iMovie?
I'm entirely sure. I don't do much editing on the iPhone

Thanks!
anybody know how to turn the smooth on? it won't allow me to! if anybody knows please reply to this comment :))
Thanks for watching. The smooth option appears when you hit speed icon. But it only allows you to if you have multiple speed change on the one clip.
I liked the intro a lot but you should have clipped out right when it was going to look down.
Hey Anthony thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback! Are you talking about where the camera pans up to reveal?
@@CreativeTechLab The end of the shot, everything has to be smooth. This is what separates Professional and everyone else.
