I was stationed in HHT from 90-92. Great to see what my first duty station was like. Met a lot of great friends there too. A flood of memories just surged into my memory and I sure did love it there. Hooah!
I was there between 90, and 92 K Troop deployed to the Gulf War. I will always remember Sgt Major Nestor and the Blotter reports. Lol 😆 this brought back a flood of memories. Thanks for sharing!
CSM Nestor is on Facebook. There is a page for Pond Barracks. I only knew two guys from K Troop, and they were the two guys that played in a band. Mike and Sam?
Thanks for the tour, I was stationed there from 1984-1986 in K-troop. Many nights i remember coming back thru the main gate from a long night at the Melody ... Speedy would drop us off or we would stumble back on foot . Hans got us back one night in his Chevrolet.. I do miss that place!!
Wow, what else can I say. Took my family back in the summer of 2022. The changes were even more profound. L Troop Barracks still stood proudly . Toujours Pret
It was worthwhile, and I appreciated the opportunity to go back. It was a little sad to see HQ gone and HWB gone. Time rolls on I guess. I was also there during Desert Storm in HWB.
like many others, ton of memories. I was there in 2000 and it looked much the same then also, my old "I Troop" bldg was a kindergarten when I visited. Worked in the S-1 starting APR 83, then my last 6-8 months with I Troop, 2nd Platoon Scouts. TY for the vid!
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!HHT Squadron Maintenance 84-88, lived in Gailoh. I was TDY in Graf January 2016 and went back to Amberg. As you showed, it was difficult to visualize where everything USED to be. My dad was stationed in Augsburg 76-79, I was stationed in Amberg 84-88 and Friedberg 98-2001. Amberg is still one of the most beautiful places ever.
Thanks for the wonderful video of Pond Barracks. I was stationed there from Aug. 1968 until the end of Jan. 1970 with the Hawk Missile Unit. It brought back many memories and I envy you that you got to go back and visit. Maybe someday I will be able to travel there myself and enjoy the beauty of Amberg again.
My husband was stationed in Pond Barracks from the summer of '91 until it closed in '92. We lived in the housing just past the side gate. My husband, Rich, has since passed away. Thanks for sharing this video. Brought back so many fond memories.
Thanks so much for the tour! Lived in the military housing with my family while my dad did 2 tours in Amberg. I started elementary school on the base and junior high school in Vilseck. Moved to Fort Hood, Texas for a few years and then back to Amberg. Attended high school in Nurenberg. Can't wait to show this video to my brothers. Thanks again.
Thanks for posting this...I know I'm late to the party, but this is great. My Dad was stationed here 1974-1976 and I attended Amberg elementary school 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Love every minute of this beautiful place. My fondest childhood memories are here. Dad was in the motor pool and I remember Reforger and him going to Graf all the time "out in the field". I often walked from our apartment building to the movie theater on Saturdays and ran to the PX for my mother all the time for this and that. Love it!
We were stationed there from 1960 to 65. If you are standing on the parade ground facing the Mess Hall 1st building on the right was K Troop! Where dad was.
Nick name Kirby, I troop tanker Sheridan, 71/72. I fell in love with Europe . Camp Rotz was a great " resting place" once every 3 months. Fond memories
Nice video. Sure has changed. We left there in 1965, I was 15 yrs old and lived in the housing area outside side gate. Went to elementary school on base there. From there we transfered to Ft Riley. Brings back lots of memories.
K Troop 3rd Platoon. 73-74 .K32 and K36 Sheridans lots of memories want to go back in a few years Was in a M114 in 2nd platoon in 72, then they went to all M551's
nice video,i was with i troop from 87 to 90 then went to desert storm with the big red one out of fort reiley ks.wish i could have gone with the cav from the 3/2,hope ecvey one is well, alaways ready
Wow...what a flood of memories for me. I was with the 4/2 ACR at Feucht Army Airfield from 1987-1991, but was assigned to 3/2 at Pond for a year as the Squadron CDR's helicopter crewchief. I met a lot of great people there.
Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was stationed there from 1971 to 1974 and was in "L" Barracks. How things have changed. Mess hall looks the same.
I was in how battery from jan 77 to june 79, mud diver for life. I loved listening to the german people speak the language, and they made the greatest beer I've ever tasted. I spent many a morning running to the ammo dump and watching my motor sargent spitting up and smoking a pall mall red right after. I really enjoyed being with all the girls that would have me. My friend Bill Spears took my girl gerlinda from me but it was good for him, we played some good basketball together.
I was there from 84 until 93. I Troop, HHT and K Troop. did the Gulf War with K Troop. We kicked ass. And all three of our combat arms were Top Guns in Europe in 91. Tankers, Scouts and Mortars. I guess HOW Bat didnt have that competition. I still live in the Area. June will be forty years. I was the longest serving 3rd Squadron Trooper on the border (Camps May and Reed), plus I was the last soldier to leave Amberg . A dozen of us NCO's who were ETS'ing and PCS'ing were tasked with taking down signs and removing leftover furniture. I had over 80 days leave and needed to use it or lose it. When I returned after a month of vacation, everyone else was gone. There was a letter for me at the main gate where the German Guards were, that told me to, "Officially", turn over the keys to them, even though they already had them. Afterwards I was ordered to report to the 100th ASG in Graf where I went to work for my old K Troop First Sergeant, CSM Anderson in PAC before I ETS'ed I could tell you guys some stories. Its been a helluva a ride
BTW, before all the renovation, Amberg wrestled with what to do with the kasserne. In the end, they paid the US Army somewhere in the neighborhood of 19 million d-marks. Due to all the stuff we left behind that still had value, Like the new Motor pool and Motor Bays with brand new overhead crane. Anyway, there was a time when the area was fenced in and served as a refugee asylum camp for Hutus and Tutsis , and at another time, Bosnians and Serbs. I remember reading about a knife attack sometime afterwards, don't remember who, and the post remained vacant until developers moved in and started turning everything into homes, townhomes and apartment buildings. I don't need to stroll down memory lane, I live there, albeit a few miles away, passing by the post and other stomping grounds nearly daily. Tojour Pret Fellow Border Rats
I really enjoyed the video. I was in How Battery from late 69 to may 71... My wife is from Amberg and we were there in august 2010... We were told that the apartments at Pond Barracks house refugees from Bosnia....
I was L troop 77-78. Sheridans and 60's. When i was there L troop was in fact next to headquarters, and the gym; just like chaiyz says. 'Throwing cruits out the window'. Later depicted in the movie Buffalo Soldiers with Wakeen Feenix and Ed Harris with the suggestion the soldier had fallen off the roof while fixing como equipment. Ed Harris of course negates that premise. L☺L My MOS was 11 Bravo so i was lucky enough to get reassigned in Wiesbaden and Mainz woo hooooo!
Sad to see Pond Barracks has gone the same way as 4/2's home at Feucht Army Airfield where I spent 1987-1991. I spent almost a year at Pond as the SQDN CDR's helicopter crewchief along with my pilot CW2 Toby Schlink. Had some good friends there.

Thanks so much for posting this. I was there from 90-91 and went to Desert Shield/Storm with 3/2 ACR. Of the two former barracks you mentioned as belonging to L and I Troops, the one closest to the old mess hall was L (my unit). I had always wanted to go back, but having seen your video now, I'm not altogether sure I'd want to. Was it a worthwhile experience for you, or did it make you a little sad? There was something about that old post that got into the blood of everyone who served there.
Do you remember a SGT. David Stewart from L Troop? He was there from 84 -92. We had a white Firebird. He is my ex-husband. My name is Ulli. I used to bartend at the Melody, my ex-husband also was a bouncer there. It made me sad to see this video. I have such fond memories of this post and all the people there.
Going back in a few days after leaving in 85. I was with D Btry when we deactivated in 85. We officially deactivated in April 85. Met my wife of 33 years there at the Sundown. She is actually from Munich and was visiting a friend at the time. My full tour was from January 83 to April 85. Then I was transferred to Wurzburg from April 85 to July 86.
No, I am from Fla. I only knew a few guys outside of HWB. Kenny Campbell was one of them, and he was from TN, but I mostly hung out with the guys from HWB.
Wow, that place has sure changed. BTW, in 89 L troop moved to the building closest to the mess hall and I troop was the one closer to the HQ building that is sadly missing now. Funny that H battery building is gone as it was the last building occupied before the post closed in 92. I was in I troop back then. Lots of memories, can't believe Roma's is gone. Wonder if the Happy Rock is still in Wieden? Still "always ready"!

Bingo! What's up Carpenter? What are you doing these days? I thought by now you would have rejoined the Navy and won the world championship of Tecmo Bowl!
I was born there in 78...Military but off base.
Wow, time does carry on. I was stationed at Amberg in 1974-75. How Btry. Our BC was Capt. Donald Davidson. We actually lived at Vilseck for seven months while How Btry barracks were remodeled for the first time since WWII. At the time, the How Btry barracks was at the far end of the parade ground, by the EM club. It would have been on the far left hand side, as you look into post from the main gate.
I remember Lt. Brehm, and Lt. Taylor (who was from San Francisco). Also Lt. Baddley (sp?). Sgt. Henry was my gun chief (M109A1), and Henry's Heroes was the name on the turret. Did REFORGER 74 on the gun crew; was later transferred to FO's section, and spent REFORGER 75 with Sgt. Herring in one of the FO jeeps.

When I arrived in 84. headstart was above HOW Battery, where he said it was. I guess they moved it before I arrived
When did they de-activate Pond Barracks??
In 1992 I believe. They were getting ready to close up when my ex-husband and I left there in 1992.
1993
Who could forget Speedy! I wonder whatever happened to him? Last I heard he went to jail.
1992 I believe.
