  • Fly fishing New Zealand - 'CHASING RAINBOWS'
    An invitation to fish for Rainbows in a small North Island stream late season, provided myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) and good mate Anton Donaldson an opportunity we couldn't refuse. We winged our way up and were met by my friend Doug Stevens (owner of NZFISHING.COM).
    It was a unique, and at times, breathtaking rafting trip into some simply stunning country. We had the challenge of fishing to some good sized trout at times but were often frustrated by unseen smaller fish constantly hitting our flies intended for the larger ones. We began to refer to these young and incredibly hard fighting fish as 'blockers' as they seemed to run interference for their bigger cousins. It was just the best fun and we finally started to get into some very nice fish before having to head out.
    Music kindly supplied by Jay Kennedy of 'The River Project' from the album 'Solar Controller'
    Mike is available for guided fly fishing based in the south islands nelson district www.latitudeguiding.co.nz

    Wow!
    Amazingly beautiful terrain. ..
    Unbelievable fishing...
    Been a fan of New Zealand fly fishing since......as long as I can remember. ..
    Has only been a dream until my luck changed...
    I met a woman from Rotorua. ...and married her.
    We are moving back to N.Z., for her, and to N.Z. for me..
    Looks like Lumsden will be home for us.
    I look forward to meeting you...seriously. ..
    I have fished and guided locally for decades...but...I am waiting with "baited"breath to experience the same waters
    that I see in your videos..
    My home river is The Columbia. ..but we have many years worth of fishing right here in the Kootenays. ..
    Literally every stream has trout, of one species or another. ..
    Until I move to N.Z, I will continue to be an avid fan of your videos...
    Thanks so much for your work...and giving me hours of enjoyment.
    Priming me for my future. ..
    If you guys ever get a chance to get over here, I will be delighted to show you our version of this amazing sport...

      Thanks Damian. I'm near my mid fifties too, and have carried huge packs and walked huge miles over the years with the body starting to creak and groan a little so feel your pain. :-) That fly you refer to would be the Orange Tungsten Hare and Copper. • @michaelkilby1031
    @michaelkilby1031 7 лет назад

    you'll have better luck with keeping fish on if you keep your rod tip horizontal out to your side rather than vertical up above your head. Sure its necessary to raise the rod tip when passing obstacles but once youre on level ground keeping your rod horizontal will help to keep the hook lodged in the corner of the mouth. When your rod tip is high and the fish goes for a jump or turns aggressively thats when your hook pops out and youve lost the fish

    • @michaelkilby1031
      @michaelkilby1031 7 лет назад

      That being said though, great video and beautiful fish

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  7 лет назад +1

      Cheers for the advice but i've been doing this and teaching anglers a long time - we react to what the fish is doing and act accordingly. If you drop the rod tip for side-strain (that's what it's called) at the wrong moment these powerhouses will bolt and bust you in a second so generally rod up until clear of rocks then lower if needed when they get close... Guess it's hard to say if you aren't actually there...

  • @ningaloo67
    @ningaloo67 8 лет назад

    Thanks for sharing, would love to come to NZ one day, your clips are good, i see that you are in contact with troutboynz, you should ask him for a few tips, to take your clips to his level?

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  8 лет назад

      +ningaloo67 Cheers, i know Andrew and he'd probably have a chuckle over that comment. It's all about styles, and mine is more immersive doco/story than his, which are close up shorter choppy shots, DOF and angles to music. I like to communicate to viewers with dialogue and this suits 'real time' styling. I probably have more filming gear than Andrew as well, (having made 5 fly fishing DVD's) but still favor simplicity over impact. Some also love short clips while mine are long... I guess 1m views means plenty like them.
      Andrew is a bloody talented bugger though and does some great work for sure.

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  8 лет назад

      +Josh Tredinnick Indeed Josh, best way to go about it is to film/edit in the style you most like to watch yourself, and if people like that then all the better.

      +troutboynz Well who'd have thunk it?! Yeah, was low after a long hot summer there apparently... Maybe i'll have a look further up one day Andrew and the hot tub was a great finish, if it was my wife it may have been a different story! :-)

      Jesus!!! 80k views, I must have done something wrong with my clip! That's great work Mike. I see that clown we talked about today has ripped off every single video I ever made! Have reported him so will see, but doubt anything can be done. Cheers

    i understand that all new zealand rainbows are imported from russian river in norcal many years back

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  7 лет назад

      I thought at least some were from Sonoma Creek in the US

    • @bigsadie3405
      @bigsadie3405 7 лет назад

      sonoma creek is a tributary of the russian river which starts in mendocino county , but flows and fishes best threw sonoma county california where it meets the pacific ocean there is an awesome documentary about the glory days of russian river fishing called rivers of the lost coast , how amazing the fishing was , how they believed it would never stop what went wrong and how they have been restoring it , i understand the fish have been doing excellent in new zealand and was curious if they have sea run rainbows there or as we say steelhead

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  7 лет назад

      Oh ok cool - thanks for the heads up. Yeah they are doing well here with Lake Taupo (central North Island) holding a large population of Steelhead strain Bows that run most of the year around up the tributaries of the Lake such as the Tongariro and Tauranga Taupo river... They are only of modest size by world Steelhead standards maybe averaging maybe 5lb over the last decade but high numbers and good sport

      great thanks for the info , you are on my nucket list , i fished and caught every saltwater and freshwater fish you can name in the us. spending most my time summering in nj, tuna wahoo, white and blue marlin , two different types of sea trout and most noted for striped bass which came back from near extinction to unbelievable numbers today , i also wintered in the florida keys where i spent every day bonefishing tarpon permit,, just spent last eight years in nortgern california where i was over taken with steelhead and king salmon fever , i literally was never so wowwed by a fish especially the steelhead , and spent sisxty plus days fishing predawn to after sunset on coastal rivers where chrome bright fish could be caught the same few hours after entering the river , i also grew up flyfishing in pennsylvania tying my own flys by third grade , catching browns , rainbows and brooks , the mere fact that a steelhead may make four or five spawning runs in a lifetime blows my mind and the fact that nobody knows where they go between runs but a twelve or fifteen year old fish will be close to or well over 20 lbs is just magical,,, the brown trout size and beauty in new zealand as well as the magnificent natural beauty of the river and landscape make me hope to spend a week or two fishing there , argentina sea run brownies is my first wish list butt thanks for your correspondance and keep fishing
