- Fly fishing NZ - Late Season 'Southern Sojourn'.
An opportunity to head a long way south with mate and fellow guide Hans Kreuer, gave us the perfect chance to get a last shot at some sight fishing in the final few days before the end of the season. The weather was a little schizophrenic at times with threatening clouds approaching and receding, but enough fine spells endured for us to have some great fishing and even explore some new water to close out the open season in some style. Bring on next season!

Did I mention I can't get enough of your channel! Thanks mate. Missing that awesome country!!
One of my favorites by Mike. The springs at the end of the video make everything come together.
Spot on mate, that was the Tail Walk of the Century. Epic Brownie action in this video. I love Sight Fishing for Brownies.
vel done mate, super fishing, nice casting and beautiful nature :-)
Beautiful place.
Thanks and yes indeed!
Mike, I have been watching your videos for a couple years now and really enjoy the way you do them. The narration is well done and not more than needed, the fishing brilliant and the scenery you have always makes me envious. Cheers, Paul
+Paul Gibson (Arrowhead Equipment) Thanks for the kind words Paul. I simply make these clips as i like to watch them and glad some folk out there like you like them too! :-)
Beautiful scenery, great camera work, top notch fishing and stunning browns, another excellent video Mike, thank you!
+Mark Loch Garry Fishing Thanks for watching!
Absolutely amazing video! Great cut, marvelous scenery and splendid music choice! Keep it going Mike :D
Cheers Tom
+ExpediTom Thanks Tom, happy you enjoyed it!
Hi Mike, have watched a lot of your posts and all are top class, some stunning locations. This is my 1st season flyfishing and I'm learning a lot from watching them, especially around playing and bringing larger fish (by Australian standards !!) to the net. Thanks heaps for sharing, and now negotiating with my loved around some time in NZ. Thanks again.
Thanks for the kind words, glad you are not only enjoying these clips, but learning from them. Perfect.
Wow, what a video! I have learned numerous lessons and tips from your videos! Greetings from Wisconsin, USA!
Thanks - glad you like them
man you have inspired me to make new zealand a destination that is necessity to truly experience the best fly fishing in the world. I've been captivated by fly fishing since i started this year and your videos have made new zealand seem like a haven!
Cheers and good on ya. It's not as easy generally as it may seem but you can't catch them from the couch...
Great stuff! I really appreciate watching you struggling with the fickle browns in what is my favourite river. Often settle for about a 10% success ratio but see lots to keep the hopes up. Plenty more good water down there for your next trip too!
+Tim McGinn Thanks for that - it's a spot i've been away from a long time. I'll not leave it so long next time...
Epic guy's. Out there doing it 👌✌
Matthew Mckeown cheers!
Class as always Mike
+Gin-Clear Media Thanks Nick - appreciated as always :-)
When I realized that your off hand cast is better than my dominate one :)
Absolutely, some of the best video I have seen and definitely some gorgeous fish and countryside. Has caused me to sign up for my first fly fishing lesson here in the states on the Kern River. I have to make it down to NZ eventually.
Thanks for the very kind words and glad you enjoyed it. Be aware, once you dip your toes in the fly fishing pool - you'll be hooked! :-)
Speachless!
+Bart Koper Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike i always enjoy watching your fishing adventures, i will have to save my pennies and book a trip with you one day.... i fish mostly in and around the northern Wellington region (Rangitikei etc)we are so blessed in this country when it comes to so many angling opportunities.Anyways love ya work and really appreciate ya efforts ya put into bringing us such great footage from your adventures and trips take care and tight lines...Simon.
+Simon Doran Thanks a heap for the kind words and i'll save a space for ya - tight lines, Mike.
Awesome
Very nice Mike, interesting to see from another anglers perspective, a few of those fish were some of the ones we also landed in the same pools. Some great talk-walking action there - that fish went nutso! I swear that _ _ _ _ we talked about is about 3x the size it was when I last fished it and I didn't recognise that big backwater at all, but been a few years since did that section. Well put together one-handed I might ad and a great watch on a shit-house Wellington day in the office!
Andrew
+troutboynz Hi mate! Thanks for that, interesting some of those fish were the same from about a week earlier?... Anyway there had been a bit of water through so was up for sure. It was an up and down sorta two days fishing but worked out not too bad in the end. :-)
Good show Mike, well done, regards, Tony.
+waikarimoana Thanks Tony!
Great video Mike. Greetings from TN, USA.
+Matt Duncan Thanks, appreciate the kind words.
Ha, what you guys call a small fish is a trophy anywhere else.... Unreal
Haha - yeah i guess it's all relative!
I know right!? When I pull out a 12in brown I get stoked
Nice,you let it go
Good looking sunglasses! Smith Chief ChromaPop. I have the same ones. Like the drone footage to close out the video. Check out some of Todd Moen of Catch Magazine videos. He uses a lot of drone footage. Great work by you as usual. With all your time off this winter, no excuse not to release a two volume DVD...
+David G Cheers Dave - we'll see matey!
nice 👍
+Ben Koskela Thanks!
great video Mike as usual!! I am planning a trip to NZ next summer....do you work as guide there right? :) can you point me in the right direction for rivers/places/permits etc? :) thanks!!
You probably know this but in the words of Monty Python " you lucky lucky ........"
Cracking post. Regards Lewis.
+Lewis McGregor Cheers Lewis. I do know those immortal words and i indeed feel like a very lucky bastard...
wonderful, great job ... thanks
by I noticed you guys use rods and reels 5?
thank you
Paulo Cruz from Portugal
Thanks and 5wts yes
Nice, good fishing
Beautiful rivers and handsome trout. Long leaders seem to be the norm; 2 1/2 rod lengths?
+M00nsplitter Yeah they are, and yep about that.
What size tippet do you use for that size fish? Also, 2 1/2 times a 9" rod would be a 22 1/2' leader, is that what you use?
+Michael Moore 5 and 6x and up to 21ft long leader in the glassy waters of the spring creek
Just wondering what size rod
Great job, as ever, Mike. Quick question: All the trout in the rivers you fish seem to be above a certain size. Where are all the juvenile/small fish in the system?
+cb202cam hiding in the small water - ripples etc. and then heading down to the larger river estuaries etc.
Hi Mike, nice work on the video as always. The spring creek looked like interesting water, was there a difference in water temperature between it and the main river? Cheers, Craig
+Craig Mounsey Thanks mate. Didn't check as there were rising fish so no need to know anything else!
+mikefsher Good point :-) I guess it was kind of a redundant question at this time of year anyway. Loved the video. Cheers Craig
Nice that there is no music 👍
Love the videos mate. How many flies do you have on your cast normally?
Cheers! One or two although up to three is allowed
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at 18:19, it seems as if you're smashing the trout's fin. This also clearly seems evident with other fish as well.
Ok - you're wrong so i'm correcting you. That fish is being held with as much care as possible. I'm a guide and it's part of my job to know (and to care) how to handle fish.
you're wrong dude
Great video and scenery! Radian 5wt?
+Speycastingman Cheers! Yep, we used 3 rods over the two days which were all Scott Radians (4,5 and 6wts)
Nice Mike :-) Great rods indeed!
Hey - what AFTMA class did you guys use ?
Greetings from germany - great video !
Cheers - 5wts
Sander F.
I am a beginner and looking to buy a fly fishing rod but not sure what length to get?
Good on ya! It all depends on the water you are going to fish but you can seldom go wrong with a 9ft 5wt rod. Hope this helps
I see you wore waders this time, a little cooler weather?
Late season and a drive to river buddy.
"Not a bad one.." He says about a 24 inch Brown..... mehhh
Hehe - it's all relative...
