Fly Fishing New Zealand - OPENING DAY 'SEEKING SOLITUDE'

  • The most anticipated day of the year for most fly anglers has rolled around again - Opening Day.
    Anton and myself have chosen to base ourselves just off the road, instead of the usual hike in as opening falls on a weekend and we expect it to be busy. This camping next to the car has it's benefits as we can fish for the day uninterrupted and fish for the next two days at a different locale...
    We found the first day a very relaxing one with good conditions but the second and third a little more challenging...

    Being from Santa Barbara Calif, Its like a dream that your waters are so clear, and fish big brownies.
    New to the fly fishing, I have much to learn. but watching great anglers like you and friends I've learned a lot. Catch and Release people.
    keep em coming. Awesome Mike.
    Thanks P.j.

Steak and mushroom sauce for dinner, I must be doing something wrong on my trips haha! Nearly bought the Flex but the Sage Pulse won out for me, horses for courses.

    Mike, I've been following your RUclips channel for a while now. There is no other channel on RUclips that puts up better fly fishing videos than you. I have watched this particular video four times since you uploaded it. I am commenting because I just saw you in a video on the Orvis website (Backcountry: South Island, or something like that). I hope spots like that bring you the notoriety and the business you deserve.
    Anyway, I love and envy your work. Getting to NZ is a dream of mine. If I ever get to come, I will surely seek your services.

    One of your best videos yet Mike! Scenery looks somewhat familiar... The one thing you taught me about battling NZ browns is the use of side pressure. I think in the past I played fish a little too soft in fear of breaking them off but this video shows just how much pressure you really can put on fish (using 5x tippet?). Anton did really well to get that one out of the blackberry bush!

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  7 лет назад

      Glad you liked it Dave, if you want to know how little pressure you are really putting on them try lifting a 1 pound block of butter with a 5wt rod and 5x tippet. Feels like you're gonna break the rod. That's 1 pound of pressure!!

    As I watch more of these channels, and keep coming back to yours, I am thinking of your videos as those done by the zen master. You really tell the story with a few words and a little background music. I am amazed at how you often call the shot of what a fish is gonna do. Great stuff... Does Anton also have a channel?

    hey mikefisher, I'm an interest lad in fly fishing and have been casting and learning the basics for a while now. if you wouldn't mind at around 18:00 u changed your added a nymph to your lure when the fish rejected it. Just wondering why u did this instead of seeing if he'd have bit second time round?

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  6 лет назад

      Simply that the fish refused and if a fish has the chance to take and doesn't, there's a reason so you change...

    absolute how to clinic boys , awesome fish , awesome fishing nice to see people who know the value of anational treasure and handle them that way , i do have a question that might be dumb butt like my dad always told me there are no dumb questions just dumb people , some of those browns looked kinda almost sea run lots more chrome colored than the other beauties , but that is not true , how are my rainbows holding up over there from sonoma creek , thats what ive been fishing the last ten years , ocean run chome steelhead that enter the river to meet a thousand seals otters sea lions eagles ospreys , and the 1% of the fish that survive their first twenty four hours are for the people . iwas thinking maybe we could back half a million sea lions seals and otters to give you the real expierience we enjoy ,,,,, nothing like being unable to sleep the night the conditions are going to be prime to drive in the dark sixty miles to the river another fifteen to avoid people layer up for the icy cold morning quietly wade as dawn breaks into position strip afew feet of line off your hook and just as you start your backcast two seals rocket into your tailout sending pairs of third run three ft plus chrome pairs of steel heads into the air as the seal s breach swat stab and shut down the stretch for the day , im sending the a petition to our new humble , sophisticated , admirable president the trumper if he will allow us to bag six seals a day we could heat our houses feed and clothe the homeless and ferstilize our gardens, others will work all day swinging spey rods to have a seal sleeping on a log wait for someone to hook up before he will enter the water , ,only thing you can do for the sake of the fish is come tight and pop him off before the seal gets them , i wish the white sharke knew how many seas were inthe first few miles of the river that would be nature keeping it fair , anyhow i can ramble way to much ..... loved your expert level display and the pristine look of your landscape
