It was a good morning trip out buddy. I have just moved house to pretty much a 5 minute drive from this beach so will fish it a lot more now! Thanks for watching!
Just moved to southern Ireland with all my fly gear from the states. Grew up fishing freshwater largemouth and smallmouth bass. Your video has me pumped to go out next week to the coast with my new saltwater setup to see if I can catch some sea bass.
Ahh, I feel your pain…. This has inspired me to get the fly rod out again, I have yet to hook a bass on the flyrod. Had some luck with bombarda but not the same though it can get a fly out a long way. I’m thinking I may set up a backpack to hold a rod so I can switch to fly, on the fly, if circumstances dictate. My back won’t let me use a fly rod for long so switching between lure and fly may be the answer. Small lures, including shrimp, are definitely favourite early in the season.
Fantastic…..nothing like catching fish in the surf with massive bonus points for the fly. Can recommend a floating landing net, so you don’t have to back off to the beach to land, although I still shake when when it’s safely landed. Well done sir!
yeah I think il be taking my floating net next time. I was only expecting schoolies for this trip out. I didn’t want to walk it back with as was only on a light tippet lol. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated.
Always be geared up to expect the unexpected that's my motto even if you don't catch at least you have all the gear if something like this was to happen 😁
Sam I've followed you various fishing adventures over the past year and live the variety of species and methods with which you fish for them. Here is another example. I've not finished watching it but you've just lost the big one and I feel your pain. Especially having it in for as long as you did!! I used to fly fish exclusively for bass years ago but lure fish now. However this is a great reminder to fish different methods and as someone below wrote fish to the conditions. I fished in Brittany a few years ago and having seen the bass in the day time I knew they'd be feeding somewhere at dusk. Essentially they and other species were rounding the the saradine balls up at duak and smashing them into the headland rocks literally at your feet! These were very big fish the shoal id seen though only 12-15 fish were likely high singles. Anyway I hooked a complete monster the biggest I've ever hooked alas instead of turning and running it came to the surface and shock its head ferociously not only for me to see its mass but also to shed the hook right in front of me!!! 😮😮 ill not forget it. Anyway long one great video I'll watch the rest tight lines jon
Hi Jon I’m chuffed you’re enjoying the videos. That sounds very similar to this video and such a shame you didn’t manage to land it. Brittany looks good for the fly fishing and funny enough iv just ordered a new fly line from over there. They fish a lot around oyster beds and mussle poles. That’s somthing il be looking to try here in the near future! Thanks again for watching it’s much appreciated!
Totally agree, the saying elephants eat peanuts is very apt, cannot beat the presentation and versatility of the fly rod. It's an educated and instinctive angler that uses the correct tool at the right time. 👍
There’s been too many times I’ve watched bass hitting tiny baitfish whilst I’m sat there just watching on with a box of big surface lures and soft baits.
Totally true@@FISHISLANDTV I've had this in North Devon on a few occasions. I've fully as when posting on bass forums generally the consensus is just throw a patch etc they'll have it. Alas they don't. They can become preoccupied on a small food source just like any fish can. Matching the hatch is the phrase. A teaser rig can work though fishing a smaller lure on the surface or just subsurface and then a fly 3ft away. At times literally just cast it out and leave it with no retrieve it can work great.
Excellent video your right the fly is a perfect size when I’ve gutted my bass in the past apart from the normal small crab lots of small bait fish a little smaller than your fly. Nice one 👍
Absolutely matey. Sometimes the traditional bass lure 100mm-140mm are way too big and they often aren’t interested. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Im definitely thinking of getting my fly rod out and giving it a go after watching that! Just waiting for the water clarity to improve here around the Norfolk Coast. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed this video mate and what a shame on the beast! Really like the angle you film at too and the whole talk through/emotion in it all! Looking forward to a session or two in Conwy on holiday this week. Won’t be as big as those though!
I can recommend drilling a few 8mm holes in the corner and centre of the gutter of the stripping basket to drain away any water. So sorry that the beast became unhooked! As good as those flies might be I always prefer to tie my own simply to control the quality of the hook. That goes for pike, saltwater and freshwater flies of every kind.
Great idea matey I was actually thinking of doing this a while back as it dosnt really drain very fast at al… Will definitely be doing it now though. I’d love to be able to tie flies I wouldn’t really know where to start though. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!

it’s a 9ft 8wt guideline fitted with a lamson legacy reel bud. The fly line is rio bonefish line in 9wt but iv got some new fly line on the way to use. I ordered some Rio floating striper line.
Omg what a beast of a fish, I screenshot the slow motion film, it was a monster…. Gutted for ye pal.. Quick question as want to try the fly, Floating line or sinking? Cheers
It was really big wasn’t it ! Il never forget that one that got away 😂 ok so I guess it depends with the line. you have floating, intermediate or sinking.. I mostly use floating but if I was in deeper water I’d go with intermediate mate. with the floating line your fly will still sink. I use a 10ft leader and a 2 ft tippet so if I just left it in deep water static the fly would have the option to slowly sink to 12ft.
Glad you enjoyed it mate. I believe it’s the lamson legacy. Not quite sure if there ment to be any good. the guy that was tutoring me a few years ago ordered it for me.
I don’t really eat that much fish mate. I do take the odd one or two for friends and family if it’s badly hooked though. If I’m honest I’m not too keen on bass either I’d much rather a nice Gilthead bream or red mullet for the table.
@@FISHISLANDTV I see, I have no idea what the bass taste like, im in Australia. I find fishing is double rewarding when its not only super fun but you also get fresh fish to eat.
A lot of people eat the bass here but they are one of the better sport fish we have here so I tend to just let them go to fight another day. I might have to try the next one myself that might be hooked deep. Tight lines buddy!

Il never forget that one that got away 😂
ok so I guess it depends with the line.
you have floating, intermediate or sinking.. I mostly use floating but if I was in deeper water I’d go with intermediate mate.
with the floating line your fly will still sink.
I use a 10ft leader and a 2 ft tippet so if I just left it in deep water static the fly would have the option to slowly sink to 12ft.
Cheers pal. Makes sense also as bass do generally hit high up in the water column also…. We all say pitty we didn’t hook a monster until he’s gone.. 🎣
Great video! Is that a lamson lite speed?
Glad you enjoyed it mate.
I believe it’s the lamson legacy.
Not quite sure if there ment to be any good. the guy that was tutoring me a few years ago ordered it for me.
@@FISHISLANDTV great channel . Keep uploading please
will be back out asap buddy.
I’m away next week but will resume with the videos when I’m back!
👍
Thanks for watching matey!
Mate that was a pig of a fish, unlucky, I think you did all you could.
Thanks for watching mate.. yeah it was quite a beast for sure!
That did look like a big fish you lost there. Big fat head. Feel your pain. Most anglers have been there 🫣
Yeah it was a really good one mate. absolutely gutted when I got home and rewatched the footage.
Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Gutted for you, looked like a chonk.
It was like a car dashboard mate.. felt sick that evening watching the footage back!
👏👏👍👍
🎣🐟🎣🐟😎
why not eat the fish
