The shovel and rope idea... so simple but genius. Thank you! I have 6 fruit trees I'm wanting to do this to
make a video
This guy does a better job than most landscaping youtubers!
Extremely informative video, I always had a feeling that there was an easier way to get the crisp edges on the circles, thank you so much 😊
My husband just did our tree rings; I wish I had watched this first because it would have saved him the headache of making the circle perfect by using the rope trick! It will be a next years trick for sure!
Your method of edging tree circle was so easy! I saw other ones that used rope and spray paint and I was actually going to do that till I saw your video. Thank you!
That rope trick is great. I have two trees crying out for this treatment. Thanks.
Hi guy I really learned so much from you showing me how to do a tree ring I am a female I never knew how to do a tree ring I searched it and I came up with your video it has taught me so much I am proud to say that I am glad that I have someone out there a mentor to show me how he does his tree ring I will be looking for more active activities that you do with your lawn by using a saw would cut off my weeds but not the way you're doing it the very classy healthy way thank you
The yard looks fantastic! I agree- my fav tool is always a pitch fork. ❤️
I have an old sugar maple in my front yard. I did a tree ring on mine. Cats love pooping in the mulch. I changed it up and planted ground covers in the mulch. I have 3 types of sedum, superbells, and Irish moss growing around it now. I still have that 4" of mulch to the outside to prevent weedeater damage. I have to water the area occasionally. The thick side limbs block the rain off near the trunk. 🌾🌿🍀
That is a great tip about the rope. Thank you, sir ♥ I always struggle with rope not turning properly :) To deal with the weeds, I measure inside the ring, put together cardboards, staple them together, cut this circle out of cardboards, cut tree diameter out of center of circle, wrap circle in landscape fabric, lay circle around the tree, pin down with very few small landscape staples. The more and thicker the staples, the more and thicker the weeds growing through their holes. Then cover top with mulch. In 2-3 years even with this setup most aggressive weeds will come back, but at least I only have to do it every few years :) I found that the more reliable and long lasting way is to plant dense decorative ground cover inside the circle, which will smother the weeds. How do you treat your trees against fungus, sir? These things underneath there sure looked interesting :)
Great video! I stopped it twice to make comm! Lol. Finally got to the end. The wide shot at the end was great. I see a lot of back yards that are either totally bare, or so junked up with plants that there is no room for non gardening hobbies or family members. Yours is very happy medium, and it looks great! When my daughter was in elementary school she knew all the plants and how to tell what was ripe and what wasn't. She take her friends on a back yard tour and they'd graze on cherry tomatoes and any berries that were ripe. Her friends were always amazed that we had "food growing in our backyard, not at the food factory". One kid actually said that. At the time, We didn't spray any plants with anything but water or soapy water. So the kids could just eat fruit as they picked it.
If you have young kids, consider planting a cherry tomato. Most kids love them and will eat them. And they produce in the heat longer than larger tomatoes. Encourage them to pick and eat the ripe fruit off the vine. We know that's the best way! Teach 'em young!
Thank you! I looked at so many videos to get those results. I was having difficulty trying to find a way to make the perfect circle. Yours was the perfect one.
I was genuinely interested in the topic. Boy, I sure was happily surprised to see it was none other than Joel Hollein. You can trust anything this man says or does!
I normally watch your wife’s channel and never knew you had one. I’m glad this popped up.👍🏼
This is great for my OCD...I can't wait to get to the forrest!
Seriously, I compete with Disneyland gardeners and now I'm #1 in my neighborhood.
Thank you for the description of how to do a perfect circle around my old tree. I plan to add mulching around the tree to hind the exposed roots and make it look prettier.
I love gardening and backyard stuff ……give me the peace of mind.
Today"s TASK: PAINT THE FRIGGIN' FENCE!
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
The funniest people are in the RUclips Comments Section. LOL😂
😅
Powerwash and stain (Y)
I never thought of using the pitchfork for taking out weeds. I used it for just grabbing and laying mulch. Great idea. And the circle looks perfect!
Great tip. Last week I distributed 10 yards of dirt by wheelbarrow in my yard. It went better when I filled 2 wheelbarrows at a time. Total drudgery but the yard looks great.
That "CUTTER THING" is called a HULA HOE! It's my favorite yard tool ever! Every gardener should have one
Is there a difference between a stirrup hoe and a hula hoe?
I've got them! One for the stand up task, and another hand held!
Great Video, and I Loved the tip about using the rope/strap to cut the perfect ring! The only thing I do that is different, I add Tree Bark Mulch on top of the dirt. I just like that look, so it's totally up to you if you want to add to it.
Beautiful yard! Let's see that fence get painted!
Some good ideas. Thanks. FWIW, I made a screed out of 1/2" metal fabric and 2 x 4s to remove dirt from dug-up grass.
Omg, your backyard is beautiful. Keep being great!
A spading fork. I know they are a traditional gardening tool but I was never sure how to apply it to my landscaping work. Thanks for the advice and I am buying one today.
Did you get a Kobalt?
I do the same. I use a 1 X 2 boaard or a shovel handle and every 6 inches I spray a dot of orange marker at the length I need then connect the dots. Then I use a pick ax and pick to the edge either into the edge or along the edge.It makes for a crisp edge. Sometimes I pick it deep along the edge for more mulch. Sometimes when I'm in a urry I just eyeball it and it comes out almost as perfect. You can aways go back and round out a flat spot. If it's 90% accurate, no one will ever notice from afar. THUMBS UP!!!
Thanks for sharing how to get the perfect circle around trees and the tool links. Nice yard!
You make it look so easy! I'm going to try the rope and shovel trick so I get a perfect circle around my tree! I also have one of those big fork shovels like you (I don't remember what it's called) that I inherited from my parents belongings. Now I know what it's purpose is. Thank you!
The rope works! I just put stones where the circle will be, but didn’t use the pitchfork (I think that’s what you mean.)
Saved this to show my husband so we can do this it looks so nice that way!!
Im looking at this video because if you ask me the ground around the trees im working with is probably 2 times harder but nonetheless seeing you so efortlessly dig up the soil gave me an idea, maybe I should pour some water on it beforehand, nonetheless cool video.
I inherited that same pitch fork looking tool was not sure what I would use it for but thought I would keep it, after seeing this video I now have a use for it. Thank you.
It is known as a Potato Fork for digging Potaotes in some areas.
I put lawn clippings in my perfect circle...its mulch, (less waste) turns into yellow carpet, great color contrast...and worm incubator, plus no weeds.
I have two rows of tart cherry and pawpaws trees in my backyard. All have five foot mulch circles around them, twelve in total. I make them exactly the same way and they are maintained with a gas driven power edger. They look outstanding with decorative cocoa bean husk mulch!
Good vid and tips. Your trees will LOVE you if you mulch that ring. Plus you'll have a lot less trouble with weeds invading it.
Joel, you make it look so easy!
I wish I watched this video a month ago, would have saved me so much time!
Looks great. I would add mulch to suppress weeds and grass from coming back. Also, it helps keep the tree hydrated. 🌳
Can you do an update on the lawn leveling? Was it worth the effort? How is it holding up? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge!🙌🏼 I appreciate you!
Great video. Thanks for sharing !
Great tips Joel and everything looks really nice!!!! 👍💞💖💞👍
I have learned so much from watching your channel!
i have a reason to get a pitchfork now. awesome video!
Amazing tips and tricks. Thanks for sharing 👍 Very much appreciated. 👍
Joel the garden looks fantastic will you ever re do your fence if you will sell it after the new house is built
@@AricBolf oh I didn’t realise that. When I see fences in American homes I always think of how pretty a white picket fence is. In the uk we tend to paint our fences yearly so they look nice all year round. I guess it’s individual preference I guess. Will use the tip for the flower beds thou.
I’ve always wondered why the fence looks so neglected, the house and garden are always on point, not trying to be negative I have the upmost respect for this wonderful family
@@omaopa6923 that was my thinking also. I just didn’t know how to say it politely
I believe in a vlog before they said that they like the fence the way it is… it gives the yard character and personality. Personally, even though I think it would increase the value of their home, I think they should leave it. I like the character too. Especially since the yard is SO beautiful. A little character never hurt 🥰🥰
Thank you for the tip on creating the circle around the tree. I wish it was that easy to get rid of the Bermuda grass that is common in my area. The roots can be as deep as 6-8 feet!
Good look gave me a idea what to do with my tree. Thanks
Thank you so much. Your rope and spade was great and worked perfectly
Boah. I like the lot of flowers in your garden!
Thank You! Great -How to... video! Exactly what I needed to know! Straight to the point!
Great idea on the circle. I can't help myself though, for all the time you say you spend in the yard, looks like you haven't painted that fence in 20 years. I'm going to send my kid over there to help you out!
I rigged up a stranded cable years ago to do the same thing. My neighbors must have thought I was wacko...but I have perfect circles. Because I have two trees in a row, it allowed me to lock the length in place so both matched.
I bet your neighbors love those perfect tree rings.
All that hard work on your yard and the fence looks like that
Straight edge equals shovel, pointed edge equals spade. A shovel is for moving þings & a spade is for digging. Good video þough.
liquid pottasium will help your trees as well:-) great video cant wait to try my lemon trees soon. Allison
I think your next task should be sanding and painting that fence in your back yard :)
We are waiting to change to fence to something our neighbors will agree on....
@@TodaysTask you have the "back" side of the fence and your neighbors have the "front" side of the fence. I am assuming you don't want that in your new fence. You can make one board your side and one board neighbors side and repeat. This way you will have uniform look on both sides. It also looks really good and unique.
@@ukomdesign We call that a Good Neighbor fence. A Good neighbor will split the cost with you when it's time to repair it. If it alternates no one can say "That's not my fence and it's not my expense ". Assuming that it actuality is a shared fence.
Lol Melissa it is bad
Damn Melissalmao
The trick with the tree -shovel- radius - Brilliant! What if the roots of your trees are starting to come up in the inside of the circle that you are preparing?
Fill in the circle with some mulch.
Joel the yard looks amazing ,but the fence absolutely needs attention ! Just to fit in with all you have done to make the yard look so gorgeous!! ❤ your ch. !!! I had really nice nice time😉 !
That's the first thing I noticed too.
Perfect circle…..looks nice. And my husband just lays on the couch.
That's some nice soil. (Clay by me) I don't add mulch either, I do use preen to help keep the weeds down but mostly just try to keep up on it by walking around and checking daily or weekly.
OMG! What great tips and tricks! Thank you so much for sharing! Great video too!!
Looks nice! So I started doing this for my front tree, with a 6 feet ring radius and I had to stop because my husband almost had a heart attack and said I will kill the tree. I highly doubt it, it is a 20 year old tree It should be fine. I got a deep 10 inch grass barrier to dig around it, so I digged out about 4 inches deep, and yes I did cut some roots but I think it will be fine.
A 20 year old tree has roots that are way longer than a 12ft circle and deeper than 4 inches
Excellent video!
This is genius. Thanks! Liked and subscribed
great job on tree circles thank you. Now paint the fence.
great tip 👍👍👍👍 I have always just eye balled it , but I really like your way much better ,,,,, thanks
Joel, that looks great, just need to add a robotic mower to your lawn to give you a break.
That was the right TOOL to build a Perfect Circle
I used a garden hose to mark where I want to cut. Nice tips. For what it's worth, I'd consider replacing that Sycamore. They are really messy when they mature. The balls have a fuzz that's like mowing insulation that goes in your nose. I Chinese Lace-bark Elm might be a good fit - depending on your climate.
Great job! Thanks for the tips!
Shovel and rope ... great idea!
Looks so beautiful
Just a thought and correct me if it’s a terrible idea the grass cutting electric tool or petrol for straight edges if you tied this to the rope you would have the same job just 10x faster
JOEL!! Nicely done looks great.
On the humor side- you have to face that fence sometime. Just a thought not a sermon. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!
Probably when they are prepping the house to sell lol
Beautiful work!
Great tip, especially for how to dig a perfect circle !!!
Great video, thanks for the tips
Thank you for this! I appreciate it and have just the tree that needs this help. ❤
excellent ,thanks for the tip ,now you could paint your fence.
Love what you did. I use Texas blend rock in my landscaping.
This is a great video! Thank you!
Nice job Joel. Of course, all your videos end up being "Nice Jobs".
Great tip. Thanks for sharing
I learned something new today, thanks
I like your idea. What I would do differently is to zip tie a hook and or metal ring onto the Shovel handle also add a leveler onto the handle. Replace the cargo strap with some heavy duty twine or fishing line or Masonary line etc. Keep up the good job.
I've seen the marking spray paint method. That leaves a pink or yellow circle for awhile. My tree is almost triangular. Rope won't work. I used a yardstick and tried to round it the best I can.
Hello, great advice about not stepping on your edge.😊
Thank you for sharing! Awesome video.
Great information-! My Elm trees have huge exposed roots making it very difficult to mow. The roots have grown above the ground level and in some cases 3 to several inches above. I've thought about tree rings but not sure how to deal with the root situation? Thanks
Thank you... Why do you remove the grass around of tree? I've a few trees and covered by grass, I think it looks natural..
It doesn't serve any purpose other than a clean look and I don't have to hit the tree with the edger. My other trees have grass up against them.
Great job. You might paint that fence next.
Those perfect circles make all the difference aesthetically.
My 2¢, i try to go about 4” deep on edging.
What do you think of putting plastic down first in the circle and then some mulch over top ?
I am not a big fan of weed barriers. I haven’t had to much luck with them.
You make it look easy. Thank you
Thank you so much 💓for these tips!! We have so many trees that are young in our yard that we want to do this too!! Love the tool as well to help gets weed roots up as well. Need to get one of those and try it in our flowerbeds.
Hi Joel!! Thank you for the information!! I have clumping grass that grows around my patio. I didn't get it all out before they poured the patio. Any ideas to get it out? Thanks!!
Great tips! One question - I have some shallow roots that will interfere with cutting in that circle edge. Any remedy for that? The trees are medium sized oaks.
May give this a go, only downside is our tree is rather massive and is a bit close to the side walk.
excellent job my friend
It’s a great tutorial!
It’s true that the unpainted fence made me wonder …
