Thank you so very much for this video! Most of the video I have found were based on you having mulch already! You video gives me the guidelines to mulch a tree that has never been mulched. Thank you!
@@Evenvesper You're welcome Evenvesper. That was my main goal to teach how to mulch a tree from scratch 👍🏾
Just a followup to my comment of 5 days ago! This method worked so well today when I finally got started on it. Cutting the sod , both the vertical cut and the 45 degree angle cut with your method worked great. I’m so glad I found your videos…..thanks again.
Thank you rcague for following back up with me. I'm glad that everything worked out great for you, and I know it looks fantastic. Thank you for your support 🙏🏾
Oh my goodness! This is how to get this look! Thank you. I learned so much. The teaching on the V shape and what to do and what not to do was amazing; along with flipping over the rake!

This is a work-saver! I was removing ALL the sod right up to the tree before I saw your video! My BACK!!! Thank you!
All I heard was Tylenol extra strength, lol. I'm glad this helped you, my friend.

Didn't know Chingy was so good with landscaping!! JK 😂 but I bet you're from STL !! I love the idea of the V barrier and creating the live edge , also not removing the remaining grass going toward the tree. I plan to do this exact thing this weekend. Thanks !!
No problem, Brandon. I'm from Louisville. Not too far from St Louis. Let me know how it goes when you create your tree ring. I'm gonna be famous soon. People have called me Chingy, Young Joc, etc 😆😆😆
I just hope my career last longer than theirs 🙏🏾
@@PoloFieldsLawnService I wish you the best of luck !! It went great !! I opted to do the live edge and disregarded the plastic outliner. Now I am going to do the house the same way !!

@brandonplank4233 I haven't used a plastic outliner in years. The edge looks awesome, in my opinion
Mmm, that music. Aaah yeah

Mulch shouldn’t touch the trunk. You can also attach a string to the shovel and skip the spray paint. Happy mulching!
Hello B Ham, I did take the mulch all the way to the tree, but where the root flares out, I laid a very thin layer over it so that the tree could still breathe. I know i didn't discuss that part in the video, but trust me, it's a very thin layer 😄 Also, I've found out that using spray paint works best for me when making a complete circle. Appreciate your comment 👍🏾
Great job of explaining!!

If i have grass in my mulch ring already how do i kill my grass without hurting my tree roots and tree? Which product do you suggest?
@@Garo.11 You can either pull it up or use round up. If you use round up, SPRAY THE GRASS ONLY AND NOT THE TREE AND NOT THE ROOTS.
@PoloFieldsLawnService Ty for the reply. I pulled up most of the grass but there's still alot of lingering grass roots in and around by my trees roots. I can't possibly pull all of the grass out as it kind of took over. Do I have to get everything before redoing my mulch?
@Garo.11 If you can't get all of it, it will be fine.
Thanks for the tips on the tree mulching. What State/area do you provide landscaping services. Could you post it in your channel's About section?
Thank you, I Service the Louisville KY area
Ok. I was hoping Georgia. I need to find a quality landscaper, that actually know what they are doing. @@PoloFieldsLawnService

@@maplewheat2010 OK, let me check real quick
Thank you! 🙏🏾 So I don’t have to apply the black plastic before putting the mulch first?!
You don't have to supply the plastic at all, but that's your choice. I didn't apply any to this tree, and a year later, it still looks the same.
@@PoloFieldsLawnService Thank you! 🙏🏾
@@AMCares You're welcome
Nice video. I guess I'm wondering why you didn't remove the grass after you cut the ring. I would think that if you put grass killer down there, it'd not be great, or even kill the tree, no?
As long as the non-selective herbicide gets on the grass blades and not the tree, everything will be fine. My intention was to spray the grass around the tree and nit spray the tree. This will eliminate the grass all the way down to the root, and the mulch will keep it from getting sunlight so that no grass will grow in the future.
Hi Polo, nice job! Do you have any thoughts on using black rubber mulch? Thanks!
Hello Johnny, I've never used it before. Most people around my area just use regular mulch. Rubber mulch will last longer, but it won't provide the nutrient quality of organic mulch.
Thank you.
@@johnnylinoleum you're welcome
use a soil prep from a local nursery that will provide nutrients to the soil for the tree.
@@amigo4909 Most definitely
thanks for giving the depth dimensions- and it appears that the shovel into the V is like 3 to 4 inches from your paint line...?
No problem, the reason why it's a few inches away from the paint line is because that's where the mulch will rest. All that I was doing was creating a little slope into the V 👍🏾
Good video. Thanks!
😎😎😎
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the tutorial. Exactly what I need to know, but at the risk of sounding stupid, what is in the holy water? I’m concerned that mulch alone won’t kill the sad little grass around my tree. I’m guessing it’s something like Round Up, but I would love an alternative
Holy water is Glyphosate , or you can use round up. I just give it a nick name 🙂 When you spray it, spray the grass, NOT THE TREE.
I would try and do this without any chemicals-I would also note the tree around the trunk should be free of mulch at least three or four inches, if the trunk cant breath it will slowly start to decompose and will likely give a place for bugs to thrive
@amigo4909 Hello, the chemical was just to take care of the existing grass that was around the tree. Also, I did remove some of the mulch that was at the base of the tree so that it could breath 👌🏾
Hi, what did you use to kill the grass before putting on the mulch?
Glyphosate
@@PoloFieldsLawnService is there any brand you recommend? Must I leave the Glyphosate on for a few days before applying mulch?
@austinitel.2972 You can use round up that you get from the store. Once you've created your edge, right before you apply the mulch, spray the grass around the tree where the mulch is going. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SPRAY THE TREE. The glyphosate will work its way into the grass blades and eventually wilt away. You don't have to wait a couple of days. You can do it all in the same day, just like how I did in this video
Fantastic! Do I need a Catholic Priest to make Holy water or will a Lutheran one do in a pinch? All kidding aside, you do beautiful work!
😆😆😆 Thank you, guitarhack, and may Gid bless you 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Question? Does the tree need to breathe? Like the base of the tree?
@davidsaunders7118 Yes, I have mulch a couple of inches away from the base. I know it doesn't look like it from the video, but trust me, it's NOT all the way up to the base of it

Good video! Appreciate the info. One quick question, can I still do this on a mature tree that has no mulch but has exposed roots? Thanks.
Yes, just don't cut the roots. Go around them and don't bring the mulch all the way up to the base of the tree
Thanks for the video! What’s holy water?
Holy water it's just a nickname that I gave glyphosate aka "round up "
I had no idea what holy water was lmao. Thanks for the clarification.

“#BED LOVE” 🖖🏾🌴
You know it 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
holy water
Glyphosate
Can you explain in a little more detail how to apply holy water? It was the only thing I was a little confused about. Exceptional video by the way.
@martinf.2705 When I say holy water, I mean round up. You can purchase that at lowes, Home Depot, etc. When you spray it, spray the area that I was talking about in this video. DO NOT SPRAY THE TREE OR THE GRASS OUTSIDE OF THE TREE RING AND DONT WALK IN IT AFTER YOU HAVE SPRAYED. If you get it on the bottom of your shoes and you walk in the grass, everywhere that you step, it will leave dead footprints
The grass isn't going to just grow through that mulch?
A weed may try to squeeze through, but if you do it right, grass won't grow back through this
Not trying to be negative but your edge could be a lot crisper then that and you used the wrong type of shovel
I know, that's the only shovel that I had at the time. Once the grass turned green, I fixed the edge
Holy water? The kind that the preacher blesses?
Holy Water, the kind that the grass blesses
What is holy water? I just cut my circle and came to see what to do with this grass inside the circle… but not sure what you mean by holy water.
Hello Deborah, Holy Water is just glyphosate or round up. I just give it a name to put some humor in it 🙂
@@PoloFieldsLawnService
😂🤣😂
wait what holy water?
😆😆 It's really glyphosate. I just have made a dide name for it over the years 😆
Ok my hearing isn’t so great and i thought u were saying “holy water” - which surely isn’t what u were saying. But the closed caption said holy water too! LOL! Can someone tell me what kind of water he was talking about? Thanks!
Hello Kpage, Yes, I did say Holy water. I made a joke about this a long time ago. This was around the time people were bad about Round up, so instead of saying Round up, I started saying Holy water, and it just stuck. NO, you can't go buy it anywhere 🙂
Oh ok. So do u spray the area with roundup before u lay the mulch or after? And what about the pre-emergent - is that applied after the mulch? Thank you. This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched so I didn’t know the holy water joke! 😂
@kpage592 Apply in this order. Round up, Preen, and then your mulch. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I explained that around the 6:40 mark of the video. You're fine about the joke. I see it for your attention, though, lol

That’s a lot less work than I was expecting though I gave some free ranging chickens that would tear the mulch bed up. I would probably have to use some crushed rock or gravel

That's done well but way too big.
Nice size to me
Mulch up against touching the trunk is a no no.... and you didn't expose any of the root flare....... trees are gonna suffer in a few years.
I swear companies that do "lawn services" have absolutely no business pretending to be arborists.
If you're going to provide a service, at least learn how to do it correctly.
Correction, the mulch is NOT all the way up to the tree, nor is it touching the trunk. If you watched the video, the base of the trunk is level with the grass. I've seen trees that you are referring to COVERED in mulch at the base of it. I'm not saying that it won't happen, but I haven't seen one tree die yet. Lastly, Sir or Ma'am, I'm not pretending to be ANYTHING. I believe that I always give out great information to help bless others. If I'm wrong, I'll admit for sure. Thanks for your comment, and have a blessed day 🙏🏾
