It was rather customary at the time. The band rehearsed all the songs in a garage, then rented a studio, and recorded all the tracks straight away. Then the sound engineer would mix it, and voila, a new album is released. That's why many of those old bands were very good live. There was no digital post-processing, none of that stuff. Studios were expensive, and the musicians at the start of their career were usually very poor. Only talent and hard work could save them.

Welcome to the Metal Family! I just turned 60, so I grew up listening to the bands and songs that you listened to in this video. Some info: Tony Iommi (guitarist for Black Sabbath) is known as the Metal Riff Master. Another Sabbath album to listen to is "Master of Reality". The song, "Children of the Grave", is one of my all-time favorites. "The Number of the Beast" was Iron Maiden's first album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals. Steve Harris (bassist for Iron Maiden) is their main song writer and known for his galloping bass lines. Another Maiden album to listen to is "Piece of Mind". "Flight of Icarus" is a favorite. "Master of Puppets" is widely regarded as Metallica's best album. Bassist, Cliff Burton, was a major influence on the early Metallica sound. He died in a bus crash and something has been missing from Metallica's sound ever since. Judas Priest is one of my favorites. Check out the album "Screaming for Vengeance". "You Got Another Thing Comin'" is a great song. Have a wonderful time exploring metal history!

Black Sabbath is the pioneer of heavy metal and they are largely considered to be the inventor of the genre.
Their music influenced all bands that came after them. They produced a lot of great music in their long career and gave us some very legendary musicians. Ozzy Osbourne, Toni Immoi, Ronnie James Dio (who was the singer after Ozzy left, check out his stuff too! You won't be disappointed!). Ozzy's solo career came right after he was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979. Ozzy's first solo album, Blizzard Of Ozz came out in 1980. You should give his solo albums a listen to. Start with every album from 1980 to 1991. Ozzy would later return to Black Sabbath many years later.
Judas Priest are also a major pioneer of the genre. They are the first to be a commercially successful metal band by stripping away all the blues sound from their music and just going pure metal sound. They featured the soaring operatic vocals of Rob Halford and the twin guitar attack of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. Their best album in my opinion is PainKiller from 1990. Every song on that album is a 5 out of 5! Also the albums, British Steel (1980), Screaming For Vengeance (1982), Defenders Of The Faith (1984), Turbo (1986), Ram It Down (1988), Firepower (2018), there are some other really great ones too, but I'll let you find those on your own! :D
Iron Maiden are one of the bands that REALLY got big in the genre of heavy metal, due to their sound (triple guitars - Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, Janick Gers), excellent vocals of Bruce Dickenson, great Bass lines from Steve Harris and awesome drums of Nicko McBrain.
They have numerous top hits from their first seven albums alone, it is all these hits that made them a house hold name in metal.
They are also an arena band. Their songs are legendary! They are so upbeat, melodic, fast and fun to listen to! They are the first band that was apart of the movement called "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" a movement which showed up in metal in the 1980's. The new generation of influential young metal bands from the U.K. back in the early to mid 1980's. Which really started something back then and it's effects are still being felt today by new listeners! Iron Maiden hold a special place in my heart! :)
Suggested Iron Maiden albums, Iron Maiden (1980) (their first album), Killers (1981), The Number Of The Beast (1982 - First album with new singer Bruce Dickenson, previous singer Paul Di'anno was good too), Piece Of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere In Time (1986), Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988), and Brave New World (2000).
Then we have Metallica, a band which is a thrash metal band. They are also legendary in their own right. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.
Metallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. The band's third album, Master of Puppets (1986), was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. Its eponymous fifth album, Metallica (1991), the band's first to root predominantly in heavy metal, appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, the band returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic (2008), which drew similar praise to that of the band's earlier albums.
Metallica are one of my top favorite bands as well. In fact all four of these bands I am a HUGE fan of!!!!!!!!
Suggested Metallica albums, Kill Em' All (1983), Ride The Lightning (1984), Master Of Puppets (1986), ...And Justice For All (1988), Metallica - a.k.a. The Black Album (1990). If you want to listen to Load (1996), Re-Load (1997) then ok, those two Metallica albums have a blues sound in them a lot, I like that a bit. Their sound changed from The Black Album to St. Anger (2003). St. Anger is widely considered to be the worst Metallica album, mainly because of the snare drum sound that Lars Ulrich used in the whole album.
After that their two most recent albums Death Magnetic (2008) and Hardwired... to Self Destruct (2016) returned to a heavy thrash metal sound, the same sound they used in their first four albums, but much harder than the first four.
Heavy Metal in of itself is a great music genre and the sub-genres under it are equally impressive. There's industrial metal, power metal, black metal, progressive metal, melodic death metal, gothic metal, folk / Viking metal, doom metal, epic metal, fantasy metal, glam or hair metal, groove metal, neo-classical metal, and others. I have heard every genre listed and all are great. My personal favorite is power metal.
I am a fan of lots and lots and lots of GREAT bands!
I know a lot about heavy metal, it's history, the people involved (singers, guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players), and many bands from many different sub-genres of metal I am aware of and have heard music from said band.
I suggest you turn your channel into a fully fledged metal reaction channel going through many songs from as many bands as possible under many different metal sub-genres. Fully explore Black Sabbath (and the different singers they have had), Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Metallica. But, don't stop at those four bands! Explore great bands like AC/DC, Alice In Chains, Annihilator, Anthrax, Boston, Def Leppard, Dio, Foreigner, Green Day, Guns N' Roses, Journey, Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Motorhead, Queen, Queensryche, Rainbow, Ramones, Rush, Saxon, Slayer, Testament, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen and ZZ Top.
These are a mix of rock bands, progressive bands, punk bands, hard rock bands and heavy metal bands. Give them all a listen! If you need more than I know of a lot MORE, way, way, WAYYYYYYYY more!!!!!! So much that you will become a full fledged metalhead, if you are not one already! LOL....Why don't we be friends and metalhead buddies? I need some new people to share heavy metal music with, I have already introduced heavy metal to my co-worker friend and he likes it a lot. :)
I got 1,000's of songs to share! :D
Well this seasoned veteran metalhead has talked enough!
    Cheers!
May the Metal be with you! \m/
    :)

It's actually one of the most fascinating, varied, technical, catchy and quality music genres of all time.

I 100% second "The Sentinel", but I personally don't really like "Painkiller" that much, I've heard it so many times that I'm kinda tired of it, really. And also has a lot of screaming so if you don't like that kind of thing, I'd hold off with that tbh. I will, however, recommend "One Shot at Glory" (and "Battle Hymn", it's the intro) from the same album. Whole album rocks honestly. It's an interesting album in that it's sort of a turning point for Priest. "Ram it Down" was sort more rock-ish album, and had drum machines and stuff, so some people don't really like it, I do. Then came "Turbo," which sounded almost like disco music, it had synths, drum machines and generally a very disco sound. And then, completely out of nowhere comes "Painkiller," a full on heavy metal record with fast and tight guitar riffs, massive and hard hitting drums and great guitar solos. It was almost like they picked up where they left off with "Defenders of the Faith," and just made it more metal. And it's awesome.
Oh, and if you like Black Sabbath, my favorite albums are "Master of Reality" and "Heaven and Hell" (no Ozzy on "Heaven and Hell," but you couldn't ask for a better replacement for Ozzy than the man himself, Ronnie James Dio. He's probably the best meavy metal vocalist of all time, IMO). So those are my two cents.
EDIT: It didn't sit right with me, I had to say it. Rob Halford of Judas Priest is absolutely as good as Dio, in a different way. Dio's vocals are very clean and polished, while Rob's are very raw. I like to describe them as perfectly imperfect. He can sing great, but sometimes the imperfections are what gives a song it's spirit. My favorite Priest albums are, in order from best: "Sad Wings of Destiny," "Painkiller," "Screaming for Vengeance," "Defenders of the Faith," "Firepower" and "Ram it Down." So if you ever run out of stuff to listen to, here's some suggestions from a guy on the internet you've never met and don't know. I know you might not listen to most of these, I know I don't whenever someone recommends stuff to me, I once asked a friend to recommend me some black metal albums and of the ones he did I heard one from start to finish and two I've heard like 2 songs each, if I'm being generous lmao. But maybe not everyone's like that, what do I know.

    • @chrisd7047
      @chrisd7047 4 года назад +3

@@mach2223 Painkiller is more speed metal than heavy metal, really, but no one screams like Rob Halford. If you're going to listen to screaming headbanger music, it doesn't get much better than Painkiller.

Hi, Im going to try and explain the absolute mess that is the subgenres of metal, which nobody can totally agree on, but heres my take:
    Old school heavy metal:
Started in early 70s with sabbath, heavy zeppelin influence, just a bit darker
New wave of brittish heavy metal:
Started in the mid-70s, old school but faster with a bit of brittish punk involved (iron maiden is textbook NWOBHM). Considered part of old school.
Doom metal: slow atmospheric stuff inspired by sabbath. Most of the songs on 13 by sabbath can be considered doom metal. Start date is arguable.
Speed metal: stepping stone between old school, and thrash and death. Very similar to nwobhm, but with much faster drums (listen to motorhead). Started in very late 70s.
Black metal: Started in the early 80s. Very atmospheric and super over the top extra satanic with a side of church burnings and murders on top. Generally very evil and depressing sounding, with terrible production quality (which is on purpose). I cant give you a good example of who to listen to because you shouldnt. Plus if you didnt like deafheaven youre gonna hate regular black metal.
Glam metal: 80s pop metal aka hair metal. Very basic and poppy take on old school. Motley crue is a good example.
Thrash metal: underground response to glam metal. Very angry, very fast, and very unforgiving. Metallica is the most famous, but megadeth and slayer are probably better examples. Inspired by speed metal. Started in the early 80s.
Death metal: started in the mid 80s in the underground after thrash started to get big. Takes some tropes from thrash and gets even faster and more technical, and makes the vocals much more aggressive and heavy almost until they cease to sound human. (See cannibal corpse for an extreme example, or Death for a more typical one)
Power metal: started in the mid 80s and takes inspiration from old school heavy metal. Has soaring clean vocals, super technical guitar solos, high speed drums, and sword and sorcery style folk lyrics. The songs often sound like they belong in super epic action fantasy movies. Try Blind Guardian for a sample of power metal.
Groove metal: similar to thrash but slowed down a bit to make it easier to move to. Started in the early 90s with Pantera, as well as Metallica and Megadeth changing their sounds. All 3 are good examples.
Industrial metal: similar to groove, but uses electronic elements to make it seem more machine like. Mostly started in the mid 90s, though Nine Inch Nails can sometimes be considered industrial metal (as opposed to industrial rock) and theyve been around since the mid 80s. For good examples, look at fear factory and rob zombie (or the doom soundtracks).
    Nu metal:
Basically groove metal, but simplified down into a more comercialized version. Started in the late 90s with bands like korn, linkin park, and limp bizkit. Often incorporates elements of hiphop or rap into its music, and is usually very simple, often just about being angry or wanting to break stuff. Slipknot are also a good example.
Metalcore: Started in the late 90s as an underground combination of metal and hardcore punk, but in the mid 2000s transitioned into a combination of metal and emo music. Contains a combination of clean singing (almost extremely poppy sometimes) and screams. Converge is a good example of the earlier type, and Killswitch Engage for the latter.
Progressive metal: can be used to describe any music that gets experimental and doesnt totally cohere with its genre's tropes. Deafheaven is whats called blackgaze, which is a progressive form of black metal. Prog stuff tends to be very long in length and have a lot of weird time signiature changes, and it likes to take you on a journey. I recommend listening to Dream Theatre (all around prog), Mastodon (progressive sludge metal, sludge is a slightly sped up more punky version of doom), Gojira (progressive death metal, they have super melodic screams, listen to stranded), and Tool (progressive Groove metal, also sometimes considered hipster music, listen to Vicarious)
I think thats all the big ones, I left out all the tiny variations (which is why there wasnt a sludge metal section), and yeah this is a big complicated mess. Let me know if you have any questions. And everyone else who thinks they know more than me, feel free to correct anything I got wrong thats an indisputable fact (like a date), otherwise keep in mind everything else is just my opinion. Thanks.

I thought about rock and metal and jazz and blues this way, but grew out of it. I learned that I can't just say I'm not into a whole genre, just because I didn't like a part of it. I agree that once you try it and don't like it, exploring it further immediately slides down in your priority list, but I'm glad I moved past that. Not all metal is growling death, same as not all country is about cowboys or all rap is about drugs and bitches. It's art and people make art about what they're passionate about. The variety in each of these genres is endless.

This genre of music goes back 50+ years. To cover it all is difficult. The first wave would be Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc. followed in 1978/1979 by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) which includes bands such as Iron Maiden (1st two albums are different to subsequent albums i.e. more punky and in my opinion better), Diamond Head, Motorhead (although they started in 1976ish), Girlschool (All female band) etc. You get the americans joining in during the 80s with Hair metal (Van Halen etc.) but they were wiped out overnight when Grunge came in (result). Modern Metal 1990s onwards has many offshoots Black & Death Metal; Folk Metal (Skyclad); Prog or progressive metal (Opeth); Math Metal (Meshuggah). The list goes on ad infinitum. Albums to listen to: Ace of Spades (Motorhead); Blackwater Park (Opeth); The Answer Machine (Skyclad); Destroy Erase Improve (Meshuggah). Some bands to listen to who are not really metal bands but are good Heavy Rock/Prog Rock: Rush (Permanent Waves, 2112, Moving Pictures good albums) and Marillion (the version with the singer Fish) (Script for a Jesters Tear, Fugazi and B'Sides themselves). Sorry for the long post but it is a big genre you're getting yourself into and good luck.
