Ran an FMU with my stock bottom end 92 back in the day. Had 42s, a custom cam, intake, Canfield heads, and a Vortech . Made 475 at the tires through a Lentech AOD and ran bottom 11s @125 all day long. Probably had the pin pulled on the proverbial grenade at that level but I ran that setup at the track frequently and hammered it often on the street as well for over 50,000 miles before selling the car due to divorce among other domestic issues. I had NO idea folks were even thinking about FMUs anymore, thanks for the reminder !!!
Love this stuff, just goes to show you dont need to spend an arm and a leg to make a fun car. Im 24 and don't have a big budget for my fox, and this really helps me push the limits of what I can do, with what I can afford with mine. Thank you Dan!
Awesome video! Love the low buck experimental/education content! I've noticed back in the day that the speed density cars seen to run harder stock for stock compared to the mass air counterparts.
Man I really need to find me an old foxbody forgot how easy everything used to be. My very first car was a 90gt. And I’ve always had a foxbody with the old pushrod 5.0 but about 10 years ago I sold the fox I had and I’ve gotten into the mod motors since then. My old 2v isn’t as sensitive to absolutely needing tuning for every little mod but my 3v literally needs a retune every time I bolt something new on lol. I still watch all my favorite foxbody RUclips channels even though I haven’t had one for a long time. Really was planning on getting a coyote powered next but there’s plenty of those out there to get later think I should probably go ahead and find me a fox before it’s too late. Just bought a Kenne bell 2.1 for my 2v i was planning on getting the supercharger, longtubes stall and coil overs I have for it put on then selling it to buy the coyote mustang but I’m thinking about a fox now. I miss the simplicity. Plus the fact you don’t need major hp to get it running a decent et.
I had a Vortech HO A Trim kit with FMU back in the 90’s. Bought it when I got into college. Loved that setup on my ‘87 which I converted to MAF. Later upgraded to an S Trim and T Trim. Remember the B trim and R Trim?!! Man time flies.
Back in 2006 when I installed my S trim kit my car was stock 87 bottom end, afr 165s, mighty Ecam, and trick flow track heat Intake. I put in fms 30 pound injectors and matched it up with the disc in the fmu and the car ran and drove great for years untuned on the factory A9L. Man those were much easier days. 😆
Such great information Dan. You bring to light options I didn't even know existed. You have a great wealth of knowledge on these cars. I enjoy watching your videos and learning more about foxbodys. I hope to buy one and build it someday.
Love this build!! I was on the fence between a turbo and the S/C route with my 86 GT....your videos have made me go this turbo budget route for sure!! Love your old school builds like this!! Keep up the great content my man!
This build n car is sweet Dan. Love the channel, old school all the way for me. Got my 17 year old son watching all ur videos 👍🏼 keep it up. Oh I bought a 96 explore with powerdyne charger on a few years back, definitely was am old build 😈 it had fmu. My brother watches u too he has 91 fox it had old vortech fmu 👍🏼 we are very familiar with them
Nice. I remember those old days. Another old school method was the extra injector in the intake pipe. A lot of GN guys did that and I saw some boosted fords with EFI and with carbs and an extra injector. Funny thing is, when the direct injection stuff was coming out sometimes there was no high flow pump and injectors or they were too expensive so people started doing it again to get extra fuel. Would be cool if you did that when the FMU reaches its limits.
@@Neomustangs No problem. If you aren't familiar with how it works you can google 7th injector and such terms. The extra injector is triggered by a positive pressure switch set around 3lbs manifold pressure then sprays full duty cycle. It also needs a rising rate fuel regulator but since you already have the FMU that would probably work. A bit foggy but I think that's how it works.
I had an extra injector spraying my supercharged Jeep XJ, 4.0L. The extra injector, in addition to adding the extra fuel, works like an intercooler, spraying fuel directly before it blows in to the engine. Cools the charge up to 50 degrees.
Dan Gafternoon to you...T.I.P posted a personal question to you about an hr ago... What is a throttle position sensor "enhancer" N have you ever used one with a fuel management unit in any of your builds?.....can you please answer/chime in on T.I.P's newly upload today.thx Dan
@@Neomustangs so a check valve to the MAP and FMU to the vacuum tree? Besides the installation, that's all I've caught so far. You also mentioned a tune won't be necessary?
I just bought my 1st 88 notch. It's a 306, milled heads, E-cam, Paxton Super Charger, Paxton FMU, Injectors, Mass air, ported typhoon intake, MSD ignition , BBK shorties, Catless H-pipe. I'm an LS hptuners guy so this is all new to me. I noticed when I cold start the car it surges really bad for maybe 3 minutes or so and then the idle straightens out. Someone told me last night the car has probably never been tuned and I shouldn't beat on it until then. It only makes about 5 psi and I plan to do a Holley system on it but for now is it okay or should I change to a different FMU? If I blow this bitch up it's getting a 5.3 LS with a big turbo!!!🤣🤣
Hey neo, I have a 3.8 new edge v6 and I’m replacing my fuel pump with an aeromotive 340 to bypass my pats system. What I’d like to ask you is will boost referencing my aeromotive regulator cause me fueling issues if I have stock 19# injectors? I’m going to try a ram air intake, no turbos, superchargers, or nitrous. Will I have any headache from my maf or should it be as simple as putting everything together? (Everything is solid the way it’s currently sitting, no issues)
I commented awhile back we have a 99 ford explorer 5.0 awd, and it recently started sputtering and misfiring on idle. Then last week itd barely go down the road so we been driving our civic. We bought the damn thing for 400 bucks and its a beast, u think the injectors are plugged/stuck open? Fuel pump going bad? Has fresh oil and plugs
A sloppy, cheap, homemade hotside turbo, on a clapped out 4.8, is easily capable of 550-600 whp and 9 second time slips. If this low buck turbo Windsor puts out reliable power thru a t5 and 11 second times, it may keep my foxbody from being ls swapped!
LS’ are capable, and I’ve seen them built to run incredible power for what they are. I’d have no problem at all running one in any GM product if I owned one. That said though, I’d rather have an 88hp 2.3 in a Fox than to LS swap it. If you want more power then go 351 or swap in a Coyote or Godzilla. Your choice obviously, it’s your car after all, but I couldn’t avoid the attempt at positive reinforcement. Good luck on your project whatever you decide !
That ls swap isn't as great as chevy guys want you to believe. I've doing LS in my Chevelle and its still expensive, even more for a mustang. And I've been researching the LS and theres problems you can run into like oil pump issues and lifters ,low oil pressure and the bottom end might be stout as far as crank but you can still break a rod.
