Hey! I'm mike89 from this run, I would have replied sooner but I've been on a lengthy road trip with my wife and we've only just got home!
First, thanks everyone so much for the support, it was really incredible to see on the day and in the event.
The run was great, one of my favorites especially with all the on the fly thinking. Not quite as good as the Prince of Persia run by Henneko_ in 2015, because he pretty much on the fly'd everything, but still was a great run!
Couldn't you have gone under that descending block in the Carnival Night 1 Boss and re-spawned at the beginning of the act like that?
Great run that totally blew my mind, as I hadn't watched a single Sonic 3 speedrun before this one. Probably one of my favorite Sonic games, too. Run was entertaining from start to finish and you performed great regardless of the tough tricks! Epic all the way, man! Cheers from Argentina!
I remember many people complaining years ago that Sonic 3 and Knuckles wasn’t programmed for speed. I love seeing them proven wrong, even if these runs are so precise that they take months of preparation.
Looking back at this, I believe there is a way you still could have died on Carnival Night 1 after the boss. On the right side of the screen starting from around 10:07, there's a part of the elevator with an overhang. If I'm not mistaken, you could have squeezed Sonic into that gap and then gotten crushed between the overhang and the floor.
Oh well, something to keep in mind for anyone who runs this game in the future, I suppose (assuming my assessment is accurate).
Remember, these aren't glitches! These are traps set by Robotnick!

Great reference! I just had to pull out my Sonic 3 manual and post the actual text.
"Dr. Robotnik has created many diabolical traps which take advantage of Sonic's ultra-fast speed. Watch out for traps that Sonic cannot escape. If you fall into the wrong trap, you might have to reset the game (by pressing the RESET button) and start again at the beginning of the Zone you were last in. When Sonic is flashing (after being hit) don't let him travel too quickly."

@@dookie_12 And it’s THAT very explanation why SO many of us reset once we got to the barrel in CN Act 2.
He was one of the best and will forever BE one of the best speedrunners. Mike, i'll miss your wonderful runs.

The first speedrun I ever watched was your Pokemon Blue run at GDQ way back in the day. I was fascinated immediately and a new hobby was born that day. Thanks for being so awesome Mike.
It still gets me how egregiously broken Marble Garden is. For those other zones, he had to *try* at least.
Somehow, one of those times when he said Lightning Shield I heard Gluttony Shield. I briefly thought that it was a nickname those guys made up for how it can get you more rings than you could ever need.

Death Egg act 2 boss - YOU CAN SPIN DASH THE SPIKY THINGS???! That boss was way harder for me as a kid than it had to be.
Sonic doesn't need to accelerate for 12 hours to jump QPUs.
Chris Goh He just needs to crouch for 5 seconds and jump.

Oliver Marsh you can hang by the wall and hit him repeatedly, if I remember correctly. Dodging him is admittedly kind of a pain because you have to spin dash jump off a wall.
Feels bad he missed all of the sweet glitches during this run. I remember him succeeding so often when he played on his twitch streams. Gl outside of speed running mike.

You know now that I think about it, it always frustrates the hell out of me that it took till Sonic and Knuckles for Knuckles to realize that Robotnik was a bad person. When in the first 3 minutes of the game he burns down an entire forest.

That's what I was thinking too :D I guess these speed runners know what they know in terms of the game exploits but perhaps miss things outside of their speed run routine.
I think he had to die before the boss died.
They explained it in case some of you guys weren’t listening. Plus the above reason.
Yeah this was a total whiff on my part. There's actually two ways I could have died there, and I just didn't think of them quickly enough. I think I prefer what happened here though, keeping the run moving, even though Carnival Night 2 looks amazing in the new route (seriously, look it up!).

What happens if you do the launch base trick on regular Sonic 3?
You get stuck and you have to reset. Knuckles’ boss is not programmed in the game.

Because it's his last speed run.
goldskarr He has decided to quit speedrunning and focus his attention on other things. Mike89 has been around forever, I believe he did a sonic run at the very first GDQ 8 years ago, but as the years pass people change, their interests shift. So this run and the one before were kind of Mike’s encore, his last serious runs, no doubt GDQ organizers gave him two runs at this event as a way of saying proper goodbye to him and give him to respect he deserves.

Actually, my understanding is he was only signed up for the Sonic 2 Run, but then they had adding Sonic 3 as an incentive which is why he said "When I went to bed last night, this wasn't even on the board and you guys made it happen" because of how quickly the donations came in to add it to the playlist.

Like if you just fisnished the game with knuckles and not sonic because with sonic your gameplay was instantly stopped by the barrels in carnival night zone and with knuckles you just skipped it bcause knuckles couldn't jump as high

most people speed run sonic 3 and knuckles with tails or knuckles and its kind of annoying considering sonic is supposed to be the fastest character in the game, and the only one who can take advantage of the shields so this is a nice change
