For those wondering what happened to dragonfang's gamecube, the fan inside it broke so it overheated and crashed. Apparently the fan was completely in pieces after the tech team checked it out after the race. At the very least, Dragonfangs was happy with his performance before the crash, and he was happy to help commentate especially since he's the most knowledgeable in the room!
truly sad for dragonfangs, i was so hyped for him, but still, was great to see him commentate, and did until the crash a solid run, hope a future time he comes to a GDQ he gets more luck
Dragonfangs' tutorial helped me get into running this game. I love hearing all the great things he has to say about the game. So sad about what happened, but I'm glad he wasn't too beat up about it!
That is massively bad luck for Dragon. I’ve never even heard of a GC fan breaking like that, then again they are pretty old machines by now. Nice of him to take so well though.
I honestly was happy to watch this race live, I gotta feel for Dragonfangs, the man did a fantastic job before the crash, commentary it was great to have him doing it in replacement of his race hardware malfunction
PerlerNostalgia The people on the couch were KirbyMastah, Krunchylex, and Eagle. Kirby has done a ton of GDQ commentary in the past, and both Krunchy and Eagle have done a ton of commentary for GBAtroid tournaments. All are exceptional commentators and I'm super thankful we had them as our couch.
John_Unfil That was great!! I wouldn't have thought commentators would make a difference in a speedrun competition but what an awesome difference it makes. Almost felt like I was watching a heavyweight title fight, got me right into it, with that introduction
Yeah, having a good couch is always a great asset to the speed runs! In the exception of the multiplayer runs where sometimes the runners can bounce off of one another, having some veterans on the couch to keep the conversation flowing or explain the mechanics while the runners themselves focus on the run primarily makes the experience awesome.
RileySkye100 I heard that alongside the C&D that Nintendo sent the AM2R development team, they also outlawed any speedrunning events such as GDQ from having it :( not sure if that's 100% correct though
It's been two years. I haven't heard any recent reports of Nintendo taking down streams of the game. Plus, they released their remake, so why should they care at this point? Plus, as far as I know, Nintendo didn't sponsor this year's GDQ.
RileySkye100 we checked with staff before the run to be sure, and they told us to not mention Am2r in either the run or in the interview. It doesn’t sound like they want to risk it either way.
This might sound dumb, but I'd love to see a marriage between speedrunning and wrestling where systems regularly are sabotaged or runners have certain strengths or gimmicks. Not to replace speedrunning mind you, just a dumb kayfabe side thing for fun.
But speedrunning is not about beating your opponent. Friendly rivalries exist, that's true. But the whole community works together to keep getting better by finding and sharing new tricks/glitches/etc to go fast. Sabotage would remove the aspect of good-sportsmanship that runners have. And in case you didn't know, the rivalries in wrestling are scripted. Everyone is working together to entertain the crowd. Wrestlers don't stab each other in the back to be assholes. The fights are (mostly) planned in advanced.
I'm glad GDQ did more of a showcase of the different routes. races are fun when everyone's on the same track but its way more exciting to watch people take different turns to get to the finish.
freezing an enemy at the correct subpixel position on a rightside door will shove Samus through the door. The setup that sam used is to release a shot the very first frame after getting hit by the pirate. He pauses to advance the pirate one more frame. There are other places that this can be used, but most enemies never fall on the correct subpixel. The other enemy that I can think of that this works with is a metroid, but since their movement is hard to control and there's no good setup, it's essentially TAS only.
Runner introductions start at 00:29. Race starts at 3:13.
Came for the speed run, stayed for the player intros!

Kirby Mastah oh man, that sucks, I wish he could have finished the run as well.
truly sad for dragonfangs, i was so hyped for him, but still, was great to see him commentate, and did until the crash a solid run, hope a future time he comes to a GDQ he gets more luck
Sucks with hardware malfunction. He only travelled halfway round the world to participate

18:35 Samus travels the elevator up from John's screen to Dragonfangs'
Woah
WHAT A COINCIDENCE
That’s awesome.
Shoutouts to the whole Zero Mission community! Without them none of this would be possible. You guys are awesome!
Scotty you are a freaking Beast dude!
Wow, he was only 43 seconds off of WR. That's super fast for a race.
theacp127 And he wasted time on that last item.
Dragonfangs: The secret fourth member of the couch.
but destroyed by controller overheat attacked
Only selectable by the Akuma code
that opening announcer is probably one of the most into it out of any GDQ announcer ive ever heard
I honestly was happy to watch this race live, I gotta feel for Dragonfangs, the man did a fantastic job before the crash, commentary it was great to have him doing it in replacement of his race hardware malfunction
Seeing these guys pull off shinespark techniques that took me using multiple savestates to pull off just right is just absolutely incredible
Poor dragonfangs
The guy narrating is very good, funny and keeps the flow going
i recognize his voice from somewhere...
PerlerNostalgia I know one the voices is Kirby Mastah. Dudes a speedrunner and pretty good. He has great insight

I feel really bad for Dragonfangs luck with the bad gamecube. But he did amazingly well, and love this whole race.
T'es une légende Sam je ne te connaissais pas mais tu as mon respect.
best intro hype like ever
ikr, I need that guy to introduce me like always
Man, poor dragon :/
I love how confused looks the space pirates with that amazing movement xD i love Metroid so much!, wonderful run.
wow I wasn't aware that GDQ had an amazing Hype Man on staff.
After they all get the fully powered suit, they start to break the games puzzles, simply amazing.
Holy shit those introductions are on point, dude is killing it. He'd give Michael Buffer a run for his money.
33:36 - best fist bump
Kirby Mastah 33:36*
ty
That was so fast it felt like the self destruct sequence was playing the whole time
Scotty truly is my idol. Keep up the amazing work bro :)
Mad respect to dragon I'd have been mentally in pieces
20:48 OH MY! Too much skill
The race is good, but the music and sound design is so good in this game
Best introductions ever.
I was half expecting the announcer to just say "oh yeah and here's sam" after hyping up all the other runners
I can't believe I actually sat down and watched this whole thing. That was intense.
Such a shit state of affairs for Dragonfangs. Shame there's not much that could be done for him or his GC.
BEST
INTRODUCTION
EVER
Metroid: Operation Shinespark
1:14:32 The daring young man on the flying trapeze?
I'm so glad somebody caught that! :D
The music between this and Metroid Zero was awesome
Holy crap, the announcers are on speed. Kudos to them, but damn, their enthusiasm
Finally, my state does have speedrunners after all!
I love the runner intros
the guy introducing was awesome
38:06 -- "Scotty is clearly in the lead"
Yes...he's been in the lead the entire time
what an energetic commentator!
bush did dragonfang's gamecube
33:36 bro love
best intro ever
The couch is killing it!!!!!!!
I would really love to see a AM2R 4-way race at GDQ someday.
RileySkye100 I heard that alongside the C&D that Nintendo sent the AM2R development team, they also outlawed any speedrunning events such as GDQ from having it :( not sure if that's 100% correct though
Luke Iannello That is correct. Nintendo sponsors gdq, so they would not be happy if they had Am2r there

I thought I had the video at 1.5 or 2x speed.. but no.. I guess the game music got speed up near the end?
Dang it... Missed another sgdq
1:16:10 Mission Réussie!
Man between this and Mario 3, a lot of race technical issues. Such a shame. Glad they let him commentate. Must be so disappointing.
The fan died, making it overheat :c
I can barely keep track of things
I feel bad for Dragonfangs
this intro is incredible
This might sound dumb, but I'd love to see a marriage between speedrunning and wrestling where systems regularly are sabotaged or runners have certain strengths or gimmicks.
Not to replace speedrunning mind you, just a dumb kayfabe side thing for fun.
that could be an anime plot

DRAGONFANGS AT A GDQ!!!!
I'm glad GDQ did more of a showcase of the different routes. races are fun when everyone's on the same track but its way more exciting to watch people take different turns to get to the finish.
I think Dragon could do it to!
So how does Sam's door clip work? Can it be utilized in other parts of the game?
freezing an enemy at the correct subpixel position on a rightside door will shove Samus through the door. The setup that sam used is to release a shot the very first frame after getting hit by the pirate. He pauses to advance the pirate one more frame. CScottyW Darn, I was thinking it might be used to clip through a power bomb door and obtain them early. Thank you for the response!
